Zhytomyr airport in north-western Ukraine has been reopened to commercial traffic for the first time since 2011 when it was stripped of its certification by the State Aviation Service of Ukraine.
However, following a USD15 million upgrade of its runway and terminal, Zhytomyr was recently reinstated to the country's official register allowing YanAir (YE, Kiev Zhulyany) to develop the airfield into a base for its Saab 340A and A320-200 operations.
The city of Zhytomyr says it will encourage the development of flights to other Ukrainian cities while it pursues international status for the facility.
