FLEET - Lufthansa City Airlines takes delivery of its first all-new Airbus A320neo

Lufthansa City Airlines takes delivery of its first brand-new Airbus A320neo, named “Ingelheim am Rhein”

With its modern and efficient Airbus fleet, Lufthansa City Airlines strengthens the competitiveness of the Lufthansa Group's short-haul network

Seven new destinations expand the route network of Lufthansa City Airlines to a total of 17

Opening of the additional station in Frankfurt planned for 2026

Lufthansa City Airlines took delivery of its first brand-new Airbus A320neo at the Airbus factory in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. The aircraft, registration D-AIJP, was named “Ingelheim am Rhein”. This first brand-new Airbus symbolizes the key role that Lufthansa City Airlines plays within the Lufthansa Group in redefining continental traffic to and from Munich and, from 2026, Frankfurt hubs. The airline is thus making an important contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of the short-haul network, consolidating the market position of the Lufthansa Group and supporting the planned growth on long-haul routes.

“Our new aircraft is a further motivation and incentive for the commitment and excellent work of all our employees, who contribute to the success and growth of our airline every day,” said Peter Albers, Managing Director of Lufthansa City Airlines, after the official handover.

From May onwards, the “Juliett Papa” will offer space for 180 passengers. Like all Lufthansa City Airlines aircraft, the new Airbus A320neo is equipped with the new Airspace cabin and offers passengers significantly larger overhead bins, a modern lighting system and improved seating comfort in proven Lufthansa quality.

With this new addition, the Lufthansa City Airlines fleet now comprises eight aircraft (four Airbus A319s and four Airbus A320neos). In the course of 2025, five more brand-new Airbus A320neos and two additional Airbus A320neos will be added, expanding the fleet to 15 aircraft by the end of 2025. From the end of 2026, Lufthansa City Airlines expects to take delivery of the first of 40 Airbus A220-300s on order.

Route network

In line with the significant growth of its fleet, the youngest airline in the Lufthansa Group is also expanding its route network in Europe. Lufthansa City Airlines is adding seven new destinations to its route network for the summer flight schedule 2025: Barcelona, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville and Bordeaux. The Lufthansa City Airlines network now comprises 17 destinations that can be booked directly at www.lufthansa.com.

FLLET - First Airbus A330 MRTT for the Spanish Air and Space Force enters into service

Getafe, Spain, 11 April 2025 – The first Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) for the Spanish Air and Space Force has entered into service with the 45th Wing. This is the first of three multi-mission tanker and transport aircraft acquired by the Spanish Ministry of Defence in November 2021.

The aircraft, which will operate from Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base, Madrid (Spain), has been delivered from the Airbus facilities in Getafe (Madrid), where the A330 MRTT aircraft conversion center is based.

"With the entry into service of this first A330 MRTT, the Spanish Air and Space Force now has the world's best tanker aircraft in its fleet,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “The MRTT will not only provide interoperability with allied nations and strategic autonomy, but will also significantly increase projection, aerial evacuation and in-flight refuelling capabilities."
The Airbus A330 MRTT for Air and Space is equipped with a state-of-the-art, hose-and-basket refuelling system and has an endurance of more than 18 flight hours and a range of 16,000 kilometers.

The A330 MRTT is the only new-generation tanker and strategic airlifter currently available and operational. Its large basic fuel load capacity of 111 tonnes allows it, among other functions, to successfully perform aerial refuelling missions without the need for additional fuel tanks.

Thanks to its wide-body fuselage, the A330 MRTT can be used as a transport aircraft capable of carrying up to 300 troops or a payload of up to 45 tonnes (99,000 lb). In addition, this aircraft can be configured with a dedicated Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) kit, allowing the installation of different stretcher modules and intensive-care stations.

The second and third Airbus A330 MRTTs for Spain are currently undergoing conversion at Getafe, Madrid. The 45th Wing of the Spanish Air and Space Force has so far used these unconverted A330s to transport military personnel and equipment, for example, in the Pacific Skies exercise in 2024 or the evacuation of Spanish nationals from Niger or Sudan.

Air India Express to become all-economy airline by 2Q26

Air India Express (IX, Delhi International) is set to reconfigure the cabin of its two- and three-class aircraft to an all-economy layout by April 2026, managing director Aloke Singh said during a media briefing at the company's headquarters.

"Certain B737-8 aircraft will be reconfigured and converted into all economy," the news outlet Mint reported Singh as saying.

The aircraft in question were delivered as white tails originally earmarked for various Chinese airlines. Air India Express picked them up when they already had the cabins installed.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, thirty-six out of forty-one B737-8s operated by Air India Express feature eight business class seats, and a further two aircraft of the type are outfitted with four such seats. The aircraft also have varying economy class configurations, ranging from 150 to 186 seats. Thirteen of the aircraft also have 18 economy plus seats each.

Air India Express also operates two A320-200Ns with 12 business class seats each.

The airline expects to grow its passenger numbers by 50% in the 2026 fiscal year (to March 31, 2026), jumping from 20 million to 30 million.

The low-cost carrier plans to take delivery of 15 aircraft in FY2026, including 11 factory-new jets and four airframes previously used by parent company Air India. In total, the airline is expecting to add 149 aircraft in the coming years, fifty B737-10s and ninety-nine B737-8s, ch-aviation data reveals.

Air India Express currently operates 104 aircraft: twenty-four A320-200s, twelve A320-200Ns, twenty-six B737-800s, and forty-two B737-8s. The airline is set to introduce A321-200Ns to its fleet starting April 15, on the route between Delhi International-Goa Mopa.

ITA Airways Set to Start Integration into Star Alliance

Photo: Ton Jochems

ITA Airways has officially received approval to start the integration process into Star Alliance following a verdict by the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board (CEB). Building on its induction into the Lufthansa Group earlier this year, this decision paves the way for its much anticipated entry into the world's largest airline alliance. The onboarding process will now move at full throttle.
Celebrating the milestone, Star Alliance Chief Executive Officer Theo Panagiotoulias stated: "In early 2026, ITA Airways is expected to officially join the Star Alliance network as a full member. The decision by our Chief Executive Board underscores the strong confidence our members have in ITA Airways. As a gateway for Italy, its addition strengthens our global network, offering seamless and connected journeys to more travellers worldwide."
Joerg Eberhart, CEO and General Manager of ITA Airways, said: "We are excited to join the Star Alliance network and to bring the excellence of Made in Italy into the alliance, further enhancing its global reach. This is a significant milestone in ITA Airways' growth, and we look forward to offering our customers the future privileges of the world's largest airline network."
ITA Airways will add 360 daily flights to the Alliance network, further strengthening the Alliance's footprint in the European region. The biggest growth will come from its home cities, especially Rome and Milan, which are currently served by 16 Star Alliance members collectively.
Leveraging their legacy within the Alliance, Lufthansa Group is mentoring ITA Airways through its integration journey into Star Alliance.
"I am proud that ITA Airways will become the fifth hub airline of the Lufthansa Group to join Star Alliance. As the mentor of the membership process, we will do our utmost to ensure a smooth and swift integration. ITA Airways' future membership will provide Star Alliance customers with many new opportunities for personalised travel planning. I am confident that ITA Airways will be an excellent addition to the Star Alliance portfolio," said Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group.
Upon completing induction, the Star Alliance network will grow to 26 member airlines, offering over 18,000 daily flights connecting 192 countries.
