FLEET / ORDER - AirAsia converts A321neo to LRs; to resume deliveries

AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International) has converted 36 orders for A321-200NX to the A321-200NX(LR) variant as it prepares its narrowbody fleet for a planned merger with the long-haul unit AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International), the CEO of parent holding Capital A Tony Fernandes told reporters during a briefing.

"It's traditionally never been done by low-cost carriers, but we believe now that with the aircraft that Airbus has given us, the A321-200NX, A321-200NX(LR), A330-900, and soon to come the A321-200NY(XLR), we can build the first global network carrier and connect the world with low fares through our hubs in Kuala Lumpur International, Bangkok Don Mueang, and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta," he declared.

The A321-200NX(LR)s are scheduled to start delivering in 2025. AirAsia currently has a firm order for 362 A321-200NX powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, and the bulk of the commitment will remain in the non-(LR) variant for now. While AirAsia has not taken any new aircraft since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, as it was heavily affected by restrictions on travel across Southeast Asia, it is now picking up the pace.

The ch-aviation fleets history module shows the last new aircraft to deliver to the group were three A321-200NX to AirAsia and Thai AirAsia (FD, Bangkok Don Mueang) inducted on December 31, 2019. Since then, the group has added a limited number of second-hand aircraft, but Fernandes expects deliveries direct from Airbus to resume in June 2024. A total of 24 new aircraft are expected by the end of this year.

In terms of the A320neo Family, the Malaysian carrier also operates twenty-nine A320-200Ns and two A321-200NX, while Thai AirAsia operates eleven A320neo and two A321neo. Both airlines, as well as Philippines AirAsia (Z2, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) and Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), also operate A320-200s.

The aircraft will complement the twenty A321-200NY(XLR)s on order by AirAsiaX. The long-haul unit currently operates eighteen A330-300s and has fifteen -900s on order.

Fernandes emphasised that the LRs would increase the carrier's flexibility in serving destinations in North Asia, Australia, and Central Asia. On an unrelated point, he pledged to launch services to Kenya - the group's first African destination - by the end of 2024. Going forward, the carrier plans to use the A330neo for a much broader intercontinental expansion, including through a host of fifth-freedom routes. Currently, the group's only intercontinental routes are to Australia.

"The network expansion is to cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam Schiphol, Bratislava, Barcelona El Prat, Copenhagen Kastrup, Cairo International, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, and Cape Town International. East Coast in North America - New York, Miami International, Toronto Pearson - will be via Europe, and West Coast - San Francisco, Los Angeles International, Vancouver International - via Japan," he said.

Fernandes added that the proposed sale of AirAsia and AirAsia Aviation Group, the investment vehicle for AirAsia-branded carriers outside Malaysia, to AirAsia X was progressing.

"It's moving. It's off the airbridge. It's moving towards the runway," he said. "The stages would be approval from the stock exchange, sale and purchase agreement signed, shareholders' approval, court and raising capital. To do this plan, we also need to raise capital”.

Canada's Lynx Air to suspend flight operations

Lynx Air (Y9, Calgary) has announced it will cease flight operations as of 0001L (0701Z) on Monday, February 26, 2024, due to “compounding financial pressures associated with inflation, fuel costs, exchange rates, cost of capital, regulatory costs, and competitive tension in the Canadian market,” the airline said in a statement.

Additionally, it obtained an initial order for creditor protection from the Court of King's Bench of Alberta under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). FTI Consulting Canada Inc. was appointed to monitor Lynx Air Holding Corporation's bankruptcy process.

In its motion materials, Lynx Air reported it is currently insolvent and has insufficient cash reserves to allow it to continue to fund its current ongoing operations.

The company was founded in 2021 after being rebranded from Enerjet (Calgary). It was backed by Indigo Partners, which provided debt financing of CAD113.6 million Canadian dollars (USD84.2 million) in three separate instalments. The compounding factors were too steep a mountain for the organisation to overcome, Lynx said in a statement available on its website. As of December 31, 2023, Lynx Air's debt to trade creditors was CAD46.7 million (USD34.7 million), and indebtedness to Indigo in the amount of CAD100.2 million (USD74.3 million) in principal and CAD24.08 million in interest (USD17.8 million).

Earlier this month, Canadian media outlets reported that Flair Airlines (F8, Kelowna) and Lynx Air were eyeing the possibility of a merger, with conversations said to be in advanced stages. Lynx Air served 18 destinations, including 11 in Canada, six in the United States, and one in Mexico.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that the Lynx Air fleet comprises nine B737-8s. The company also has orders for 29 additional units, including eight B737-8s and twenty-one B737-8-200s. It leased all of its active aircraft from five companies: AerDragon Aviation Partners, Aergo Capital, BOC Aviation, High Ridge Aviation, and SMBC Aviation Capital.

The Canadian market has recently been in a consolidation process following WestJet's acquisition of Sunwing Airlines and the discontinuing of its own LCC brand, Swoop.

Airbus A380 9H-GLOBL first Check Flight

Hi Fly has performed the first check flight of A380-841, 9H-GLOBL at Mojave Air and Space Port, California, United States. The first sortie revealed an excellent aircraft, and more flights will follow.

“The A380 is a very complex machine, and the wake-up of the giant is a step-by-step process. The aircraft performed beautifully; its flight characteristics are second to no other airliner, and I was delighted to take her up for her first maintenance check flight,” said Commander Carlos Mirpuri.

Hi Fly operated the only A380 ever to be deployed on the ACMI business, and its technical expertise and operational excellence was the reason behind Global Airlines choosing its services for the reactivation of pre-owned A380s that were parked in Mojave Desert Airport, preserved.

FLEET / ORDER - Royal Brunei Airlines Orders Four Boeing 787 Dreamliners

- National flag carrier to add 787-9s to its fleet as regional travel demand grows

- Southeast Asia's first 787 operator continues commitment to world-class travel experience

SINGAPORE, Feb. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Royal Brunei Airlines today announced the airline's purchase of four 787 Dreamliners to renew its widebody fleet. Royal Brunei Airlines' selection of the 787-9 supports the airline's long-term growth strategy, sustainability goals and focus on passenger comfort.

"The forthcoming arrival of the 787-9 Dreamliner symbolizes a bold step forward in our ongoing journey toward innovation and excellence," said Sabirin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines. "Royal Brunei Airlines has been operating the 787-8 for the last 10 years and this order will ensure we continue with a product that our customers have come to enjoy. In our constant effort to offer unparalleled service matched with the highest safety standards to our guests, the new fleet will allow us the potential to tap into new growth areas, strengthening our market appeal and enabling us to provide a superior travel experience to our guests."

Royal Brunei Airlines was the first Southeast Asian carrier to fly the 787 Dreamliner over a decade ago. With this 787-9 order, which was finalized in February and will be posted on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries, the airline can fly more passengers and cargo farther while operating more efficiently.

"By renewing its investment in the 787 Dreamliner, Royal Brunei Airlines will continue to connect Brunei with the world while offering the carrier's signature service and comfort to passengers," said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. "The 787-9 will deliver the versatility, efficiency and range that Royal Brunei Airlines desires to pursue increasing air travel and tourism opportunities."

Royal Brunei Airlines currently operates five 787-8s, serving destinations in Asia, Australia, the Middle East and the United Kingdom. The 787-9, which can carry nearly 20% more passengers than the 787-8 and fly 14,010 km (7,565 nautical miles), will support the carrier's growing capacity needs on these medium- and long-haul routes.

Boeing's 2023 Commercial Market Outlook forecasts 6.9% annual fleet growth and nearly 4,300 airplanes will be delivered in Southeast Asia over the next 20 years. Royal Brunei Airlines' latest 787 order highlights growing widebody demand in Southeast Asia.

Enhanced comfort features of the 787 family include air that is more humid and pressurized at a lower cabin altitude, as well as technology that counters turbulence. The 787 Dreamliner family also reduces fuel use and emissions by up to 25% compared to the airplanes it replaces.

FLEET / ORDER - Boeing, Thai Airways Announce Order for 45 787 Dreamliners to Grow Fleet and Network

- Thai Airways more than doubles its Boeing widebody fleet with 45 787-9 jets

- Modernized fleet taps into Southeast Asia's long-term demand for air travel

SINGAPORE, Feb. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Thai Airways announced today the flagship carrier placed an order for 45 787 Dreamliners as the airline looks to modernize and grow its widebody fleet and international network. Thai Airways selected the 787-9 to support its long-term strategy to renew and expand its fleet with more efficient jets, as well as open new routes to support high demand for air travel across Southeast Asia.

"To accomplish our company's and the national carbon neutral goals by 2050, the 45 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be equipped with GEnx engines, which are known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact," said Chai Eamsiri, Thai Airways CEO. "Furthermore, we are confident that the acquisition of the 787 Dreamliners will ultimately benefit our customers and support the growth of our country's economy."

Thai Airways flies widebody jets ─ including 777s and 787s ─ to nearly 60 domestic and international destinations, including the Middle East, Asia and Europe. With more 787-9s in their fleet, the airline will operate more efficiently, as the Dreamliner family reduces fuel use and emissions by up to 25% compared to the airplanes it replaces.

"Thai Airways' strategic investment in the 787 Dreamliner builds on our long-standing partnership and signifies the airline's commitment to operate a modern, efficient and flexible fleet," said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. "This order will support Thai Airways' ability to meet demand, foster tourism and trade, and create further opportunities for this carrier."

The order, which was finalized in December 2023, was listed as unidentified on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website. Boeing's 2023 Commercial Market Outlook for Southeast Asia projects that the region's widebody fleet will see a three-fold increase over 20 years, with growing demand for nearly 800 airplanes including passenger jets such as Boeing's 787 Dreamliner family and 777X, as well as freighter models.

At 20 feet (6 meters) longer than the 787-8, the 787-9 will enable Thai Airways to fly nearly 20% more passengers farther and build on routes first opened by the 787-8. Since revenue service began in 2011, the 787 family has launched more than 390 new nonstop routes around the world.

Boeing's partnership with Thai Airways and support of the country's aviation industry span more than 60 years.
