FLEET - Garuda Indonesia adds damp-leased widebodies for Hajj ops

Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has commenced its 2026 Hajj operations with a mix of in-house and damp-leased widebody aircraft, including A330-300s operated by Thai AirAsia X, World2Fly (Portugal), and World2Fly (Spain), and an A330-900N operated by Lion Air.

Chief executive Glenny Kairupan, as quoted by Antara news agency, said the airline requires 15 widebodies for the religious charter programme: eight in-house aircraft and seven leased jets. Garuda Indonesia will transport 102,502 pilgrims from 10 embarkation points across Indonesia, using six B777-300ERs, six A330-300s, and three A330-900Ns.

ADS-B data from the initial wave of departures shows four leased aircraft in active service: A330-300s HS-XTI (msn 978) from Thai AirAsia X, CS-WFP (msn 1097) from World2Fly (Portugal), and EC-KCP (msn 833) from World2Fly (Spain), as well as A330-900N PK-LET (msn 1939) from Lion Air.

Garuda Indonesia has not publicly disclosed the leasing arrangements for these aircraft; however, previous tenders for its 2026 Hajj operations indicated a preference for damp lease-style contracts.

The initial outbound flights, serving embarkation points Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, Banda Aceh, Medan Kuala Namu, Padang, Solo City, Yogyakarta International, Balikpapan, Banjarmasin, Makassar, and Praya Lombok International, also used at least seven in-house aircraft, specifically five B777-300ERs and two A330-900Ns, as of April 24, 2026.

Garuda Indonesia, one of two designated carriers authorised to operate Indonesia's Hajj flights alongside Saudia, said its outbound services to Jeddah International and Madinah will run from April 22 until May 21, 2026. Return flights are scheduled between June 1 and June 30, 2026.

FLEET -. Indonesia to buy 50 Boeing aircraft amid US trade deal

Indonesia will purchase fifty Boeing aircraft from the United States as part of a new trade deal, which sets a 19% tariff on Indonesian products entering the North American country, down from 32%, the administration of US President Donald Trump announced on July 15.

The White House said that most of Indonesia’s acquisitions would be for B777s, without providing more details on the potential order. His counterpart, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, confirmed the government's commitment to purchasing Boeing aircraft as part of its efforts to strengthen Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta).

“We do need Boeing aircraft to expand Garuda. Garuda is our pride,” he declared during a press conference, as quoted by the Indonesian news agency Antara. The company will continue to acquire aircraft from Airbus as well, he added.

Jakarta-based news outlet Bloomberg Technoz reported on July 9 that Garuda Indonesia was considering adding 79 Boeing aircraft. Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir said that a previous fleet expansion plan had been "dismissed" by the country's Business Competition Supervisory Commission, although he did not clarify exactly which fleet proposal the agency had rejected.

ch-aviation data shows the state-owned carrier operates a fleet of 79 aircraft: five A330-200s, sixteen A330-300s, five A330-900Ns, forty-five B737-800s, and eight B777-300ERs. It has orders for forty-nine B737-9s, four A330-800Ns and nine A330-900Ns. However, the company has said in the past that it will not take the B737 MAX or the A330-800s. Subsidiary Citilink operates a further thirty-nine A320-200s, eight A320-200Ns, one A330-300, and seven ATR72-600s.

Earlier this month, the shareholders of Garuda Indonesia Group approved a restructuring plan that foresees the group’s fleet growing to 120 aircraft and adding up to 100 new routes to Garuda’s and Citilink’ combined network by 2029. Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara recently injected USD405 million into the group.

ch-aviation reached out to Boeing and Garuda Indonesia for comment but neither was immediately available.

FLEET - Garuda Indonesia mulls B737 MAX lease Support

Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) is in talks with BOC Aviation about a lease of one B737-8, Bloomberg reported. If confirmed, the transaction would mark an about-face for the airline, which, on paper, retains an order for forty-nine B737-8s but has long wanted to nix it.
The lessor confirmed it was in talks with the carrier, but Garuda did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment.
The Indonesian carrier is currently struggling with capacity shortages caused by a double-digit number of its aircraft stuck in maintenance. Garuda reportedly had troubles paying for some of the maintenance, although the carrier denied the claims and attributed the groundings to global, industry-wide supply chain issues.
In June, Garuda secured a USD405 million shareholder loan from Indonesia's recently formed sovereign wealth fund, Danantara (Daya Anagata Nusantara), which holds a 64.5% stake in the airline. The bulk of the loan is earmarked for fleet growth, although primarily targeted at low-cost carrier unit Citilink. Garuda Indonesia Group confirmed in a June 24 stock market filing that up to IDR4.8 trillion Indonesian rupiahs (USD297 million), or over 72%, of the loan will go to the LCC, with the remaining allocated to Garuda Indonesia.
The carrier took delivery of a single B737-8 of its order for 50 units in December 2017, but grounded it after the October 2018 crash of the same aircraft type operated by Lion Air. It never resumed operations with the aircraft and returned it in 2022. The remainder of the order is still on Boeing's books, but Garuda has been vocal about its intention to cancel the deal. Its narrowbody fleet currently comprises forty-five B737-800s.

Garuda Indonesia takes delivery of its first A330neo

Garuda Indonesia has received its first A330-900. This new generation widebody aircraft is the first of 14 A330-900s ordered by the airline.

The airline currently operates 24 A330 Family aircraft on regional and long-haul routes. The A330-900’s increased range and enhanced economics will contribute to Garuda Indonesia’s fleet modernisation and growth plans, allowing the airline to launch non-stop services from Jakarta to key destinations in Europe.

Garuda Indonesia’s A330-900 is configured for 301 passengers in a comfortable two class lay-out with 24 Business class seats and 277 in Economy.

The A330neo Family is the new generation A330, comprising two versions: the A330-800 and A330-900. The A330neo Family aircraft shares 95 percent commonality with the previous A330.

It builds on the proven economics, versatility and reliability of the A330 Family, while reducing fuel consumption by 25% per seat versus previous generation competitors and increasing range by up to 1,500nm compared to the majority of A330s in operation.

The A330neo is powered by Rolls-Royce’s latest-generation Trent 7000 engines and features a new wing with increased span and new A350 XWB-inspired Sharklets. The cabin provides the comfort of the new Airspace amenities including state-of-the-art passenger inflight entertainment and Wifi connectivity systems.
