Boeing, MG Aviation, Norwegian Celebrate Delivery of Airline's First 787-9 Dreamliner

Carrier to use 787-9 to expand network across North America, South America, Southeast Asia and beyond

EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA], MG Aviation Ltd and Norwegian today celebrated the delivery of the Scandinavian low-cost carrier's first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Norwegian leased the airplane through an agreement with MG Aviation. The delivery is also the first Dreamliner to MG Aviation, the aviation leasing arm of Jordache Enterprises which has three additional 787s on order.

"The 787-9 Dreamliner will provide Norwegian with unrivalled operational advantages, large improvements in fuel efficiency and much lower costs," said Norwegian's CEO Bjørn Kjos. "In addition, it is an airplane that offers an exceptional in-flight experience."

Norwegian already operates eight 787-8s and will use its 787-9s to open up new routes across North America, South America and Southeast Asia with its increased range and capacity.

"The Dreamliner is an excellent addition to our leasing portfolio that sets customers like Norwegian apart from the competition," said Nir Dagan, speaking for MG Aviation. "We are proud to place our 787-9s with Norwegian. We believe this airplane is a perfect fit and will deliver the airline with significant operational benefits and customer value."

The 787-9 complements and extends the super-efficient 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 will fly more passengers and more cargo farther with the same exceptional environmental performance — 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes.

"We are honored to deliver the first 787-9 to our partners at Norwegian and MG Aviation - two companies that clearly understand the value proposition of the 787," said Monty Oliver, vice president, European Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "This airplane is a great addition to any carrier's fleet, offering superior passenger comfort, increased cargo capacity and lower operating costs."

Norwegian serves more than 130 destinations across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, the USA and Southeast Asia, with a fleet that includes 90 Next-Generation 737-800s and eight 787-8s. In October 2015 the airline placed the largest single order for 787-9s from a European carrier, ordering 19 airplanes valued at more than $5 billion at list prices.

MG Aviation is part of Jordache Enterprises, the Nakash family's global conglomerate that also operates Arkia Israeli Airlines.

Boeing Launches Next-Generation 737 Boeing Converted Freighter

SHANGHAI, Feb. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today launched the Next-Generation 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) with orders and commitments for up to 55 conversions from seven customers.
"The Next-Generation 737 provides exceptional value to express freight carriers through its superior payload, range, reliability and efficiency," said Stan Deal, senior vice president, Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

"While the recovery of the global cargo market has been slow, we see demand for freighters, such as the 737-800BCF, that will carry express cargo on domestic routes," Deal said. "Over the next 20 years, Boeing forecasts customers will need more than 1,000 converted freighters the size of the 737, with China's domestic air freight carriers accounting for nearly one-third of the total market."

Through its freighter conversion program, Boeing transitions passenger airplanes into freighters, extending the economic life of the airplane. The 737-800 is the first Next-Generation 737 that Boeing has offered for conversion. While large freighters carry high-density cargo on long-range routes, the 737-800BCF will primarily be used to carry express cargo on domestic routes.

The 737-800BCF carries up to 52,800 pounds (23.9 metric tons) of cargo, flying routes of nearly 2,000 nautical miles (3,690 kilometers).

Twelve pallet positions – 11 standard pallets and one half-pallet – provide 5,000 cubic feet (141.5 cubic meters) of cargo space on the main deck. This will be supplemented by two lower-lobe compartments, combined providing more than 1,540 cubic feet (43.7 cubic meters) of space for revenue-generating cargo.

Pakistan’s Shaheen Air to launch European services

Laura Hamill
Pakistan’s biggest private airline will begin with a new service between Manchester Airport and Islamabad, launching in March.
Article Start

Independent Pakistani carrier Shaheen Air will launch European services from March 2016. A new service from Islamabad to Manchester will begin on March 15, 2016, operating three times a week.

The service to Benazir Bhutto International Airport will be serviced by an Airbus A330; an aircraft which will have 326 seats. The airline is one of the fastest growing in Pakistan, and plans to also operate flights to Copenhagen, Oslo and Milan within Europe - outside of the continent they will serve Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Currently, Shaheen serves 13 international and seven domestic destinations.

The new route is a logical growth for the carrier considering the increased international passengers travelling between the Indian subcontinent and the UK. Despite a dip in numbers during the economic downturn, figures have grown, reaching a high in 2014.

Manchester Airport is the third largest in the UK, serving 22.32 million passengers last year. International passenger numbers at Manchester Airport grew by more than 17 percent for January 2016 in comparison to 2015. Figures surpassed the one million mark – a considerable growth from 2015, where the year on year increase had been just six percent.

With numbers increasing rapidly, it is clear to see why £1 billion has been invested in Manchester Airport. This will be used for a complete transformation of the airport, as part of a ten year scheme which will see Terminal One demolished, Terminal Two double in size and linked to an improved Terminal Three. It is believed that plans are in the final stages, with work due to start in April this year, with a goal of completing Terminal Two by 2023.

Work is underway to construct Pakistan’s first Greenfield airport in Islamabad. Construction began in 2007, having acquired funding after delays. The new airport will eventually replace the current Islamabad International Airport which has become capacity constrained.

Initially, the New Benazir Bhutto International Airport will be able to handle nine million passengers, with numbers expected to rise to 15 million by 2019, and 25 million by 2024. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the calendar year, and to be operational by January/February 2017.

Stephen Turner, Commercial Director for Manchester Airport, said: “I’m delighted that Manchester Airport has been chosen by Shaheen Air as they resume flights into the UK. Islamabad continues to be a popular destination with the 22 million people across our catchment area and this new service will provide them with additional choice for reaching the city, and also connecting around Pakistan, with Shaheen’s extensive network.”

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) has announced its fleet plans for the new Airbus A350-900:

he first ten aircraft of the type Airbus A350-900 will be based in Munich from January 2017.

This will equip Lufthansa’s second-largest hub with the world’s most modern long-haul passenger aircraft. The A350-900 is also one of the most environmentally friendly aircraft.

Delhi and Boston are expected to be the first destinations of the A350.

The aircraft will accommodate 293 passengers: 48 guests in Business Class, 21 in Premium Economy and 224 in Economy Class.

The A350-900 will gradually replace the A340-600.

Lufthansa has ordered a total of 25 Airbus A350-900 aircraft with a list price of around 310 million US dollars each.

The deployment of the remaining 15 aircraft has yet to be decided.

Next summer the fleet in Munich will consist of 26 long-haul aircraft, 19 of which type A340-600, and 7 aircraft of the type A330-300.

The A350-900 marks the entry into the 2-litre class: it is more economical to fly than any other type of aircraft. On average, the new aircraft will consume only 2.9 litres of kerosene per passenger and 100 kilometres flown. That is around 25 percent less than the models currently used. The latest Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines and an aerodynamic design reduce noise emissions to levels well below the currently prescribed limits. As a result, the noise footprint generated by the aircraft is up to 50 percent smaller than that of comparable aircraft. Furthermore, new insulation methods and sound-absorbing materials make the aircraft cabin particularly quiet.

United considers accelerating B747 fleet retirement

United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) is planning to complete the phase out of its fleet of B747-400s a full two years ahead of schedule Howard Attarian, United's senior vice president for flight operations, has disclosed.

n a letter to United's pilot corps, Attarian said the carrier now planned to end B747-400 operations in 2018 as opposed to the originally prescribed deadline of 2020. United justifies the move on the grounds that their 747 fleet's age (which averages 20.3 years) coupled with dwindling numbers of remaining commercial operators of the type, have rendered support for the type increasingly difficult and expensive.
United's twenty-two B747s are based out of Chicago O'Hare and San Francisco, CA though effective February of next year, those based out of Chicago will be removed leaving the US West Coast as the type's sole remaining base.

The aircraft are used on scheduled passenger flights to Beijing Capital, Frankfurt Int'l, Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok, London Heathrow, Seoul Incheon, Shanghai Pudong, and Tokyo Narita. The carrier also uses the B747s on US military charter flights.
in terms of replacement aircraft, United has thirty-five A350-1000s on order from Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) alongside ten B777-300(ER)s and twenty-five B787-10s due from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare)

Azerbaijan's AZAL to roll out budget operations next month

AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines (J2, Baku) says its recently unveiled AZALJET (Baku) budget operation will make its full commercial debut on March 28, 2016. The Azerbaijani carrier says it has been trialling the product since August of last year with baggage and on-board meals being offered as a separate cost on select AZAL flights.

AZAL president, Jahangir Asgarov, says AZALJET will allow the airline to better compete with foreign rivals - both full-service airlines and LCCs - that have expressed an interest in serving the Central Asian republic.

AZALJET's sphere of operations will reportedly encompass existing AZAL destinations that are within a 3.5hour flying time (excluding Tel Aviv Ben Gurion).

It is currently uncertain whether AZALJET will indeed operate as a distinct entity with its own AOC or will remain a simple commercial brand in use with AZAL.

2016:NEW AIRLINES-Canadian ULCC start-up Jetlines revives IPO plans

Jetlines (Vancouver Int'l) has revived plans to list on the TSX Venture Exchange after it announced a reverse takeover of already-listed firm Jet Metal Corp., a junior uranium explorer which owns mineral claims in Newfoundland and Wyoming.

Announcing the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) between the two companies, Jetlines said it expected to hold an IPO sometime in May.

According to terms of the arrangement, each 1.5 share of Jet Metal will convert to one share of the new company, which will list under Jet Metal's existing market ticker symbol, JET. Each Jetlines share will be treated as equal to 1.5 shares of the new entity. The transaction is subject to TSX approval.

“With this transaction Jetlines will have the working capital to move forward in earnest and we expect to be announcing a number of major developments in a timely manner,” Jim Scott, President and CEO of Canada Jetlines, said.

The ULCC start-up had previously pursued a similar plan albeit with Inovent Capital Inc. However, the marriage turned sour with the Vancouver-based capital-pool company accusing Jetlines of breach of contract. The two eventually reached a settlement in September last year.

Thailand's Nok Air postpones JV with Euro carrier to 2017

Nok Air (DD, Bangkok Don Mueang) has postponed plans to partner an undisclosed European carrier in the wake of a pilot strike that paralysed operations this past weekend.

According to Reuters, CEO Patee Sarasin told a news conference that the agreement would have involved the leasing of aircraft and would have allowed the Thai carrier to deploy capacity to Europe during the high season there while its partner would have deployed its surplus capacity to Asia during Europe's traditional low winter season.

However, in order to secure the contract, Nok Air would have to restructure its operations in line with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards, a move that its pilots resisted thus leading to Sunday's industrial action.

As such, Nok Air has now postponed the planned partnership until 2017 Sarasin added.

Asia-Pacific is a key A380 market today, and for the future

The A380 has literally changed the shape of air transportation in Asia-Pacific, and will continue to play an important role as this region’s dynamic passenger traffic develops during the years to come.

Asia-Pacific is a major “home” for the A380: almost half of the global customer base for Airbus’ 21st century flagship jetliner is located there, while all of the other world’s operators utilise A380s on routes to destinations in the area.

Singapore Airlines introduced the first A380 commercial service in 2007, and is now flying an expanding fleet of the airliners from its base at Changi Airport – located next to the Changi Exhibition Centre, where this week’s Singapore Airshow is being held.

The other Asia-Pacific A380 operators are South Korea’s Asiana Airlines, China Southern, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways in Australia and Thai Airways International (THAI). The list of Asian customers will expand following the recent announcement of an order for the aircraft by Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA).

Meeting the market’s growth with A380s

“While airline passenger traffic doubles worldwide every 15 years, such a doubling occurs each 10 years in Asia – so A380’s market importance will continue as airlines respond to the growing demand,” explained David Dufrenois, head of Airbus’ A380 Market Development Platform.

Routes flown by A380 have clearly demonstrated the jetliner’s capability to meet a full range of operational needs. In addition to connecting the world’s major airport hubs on long-range flights, the A380 is increasingly used for more regional routes, such as between Singapore and Hong Kong; Singapore and New Delhi; Singapore and Mumbai; Singapore and Tokyo; Seoul to Hong Kong; and Seoul to Bangkok.

Another example of the A380’s adaptability is Malaysia Airlines’ deployment of the aircraft for Hajj pilgrimage trips to Saudi Arabia – a type of operation that could open wider opportunities for the A380 in the future, according to Dufrenois.

The “A380 effect” also has been seen in markets where one carrier’s presence lead to other services in a region. This occurred after the 2014 approval of A380 flights to India, where Singapore Airlines began routes into the country, followed by Emirates, Etihad and Lufthansa opening their own A380 service to Indian destinations. “Similarly, we expect to see more and more A380 flights for China, both into the country and within its borders, driven by air traffic growth,” he added.

A passenger-pleasing aircraft, and a great enabler for airlines

Passengers continue to show their preference for the A380, often paying a premium when they can choose from aircraft types on a specific route, Dufrenois said. He also noted that the jetliner is becoming an even greater enabler for airlines with today’s lower fuel costs.

Airbus has delivered some 180 A380s to 13 airlines so far, with these aircraft carrying a combined total of approximately 120 million passengers to date. An A380 takes off or lands somewhere in the world every three minutes.

The number of A380-compatible airports today now stands at 120 globally, including major destinations throughout Asia-Pacific – ensuring this jetliner’s distinctive shape will be an increasingly familiar sight in the region
