IAG signs firm order for eight wide-body Airbus A330-300s

IAG has today confirmed the firm order of eight of Airbus’ eco-efficient A330 Family aircraft for Iberia’s fleet following the preliminary Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year. The A330 will be Iberia’s only twin engine wide body aircraft, and will fit perfectly into its existing Airbus fleet, given the unique commonality between the Airbus’ short haul and long haul family of aircraft. General Electric (GE CF6-80E1) engines have been selected to power the A330
Willie Walsh, IAG chief executive, said: “The A330s will be more cost effective and fuel efficient than the aircraft that they replace with improved environmental performance. Another advantage is they can be easily assimilated into Iberia’s existing long haul fleet, reducing the need for additional crew training and maintenance costs”.
“This order for Iberia further consolidates the position of the A330 Family as the preferred choice for wide-body aircraft among airlines and grows to 118 the number of customers and operators worldwide”, said John Leahy, Airbus COO Customers. The A330-300 offers an extraordinarily comfortable cabin and provides operators with great flexibility and the lowest operating cost in its class”.
With a true wide-body fuselage allowing very high comfort standards, the A330-300 is able to accommodate seat and class configurations to suit diverse customer requirements. It has a range of up to 5,600 nm / 10,400 km with a typical 300 passenger load. Highly efficient and optimised for the medium – to long range market, the A330-300 offers the best balance between range and cost. The A330-300 remains the most economic means of flying 300 or so passengers on medium range routes in true long haul comfort. Orders for the aircraft stand at more than 480.
The A330 Family, which spans 200 to 400 seats for the passenger variants, also includes Freighter, VIP, and Military Transport/Tanker variants, has now attracted 1,140 orders.
IAG was created following the merger of Iberia and British Airways in January 2011. It is one of the world’s largest airline groups by revenue.

Boeing Delivers First 737 with Performance Improvement Engines

Performance and drag improvements provided at no additional cost to customers
SEATTLE, July 21, 2011 – The first Boeing [NYSE: BA] Next-Generation 737 with the certified performance improvement engines was delivered on a 737-800 to China Southern Airlines at Boeing Field in Seattle last week.

The new CFM56-7BE engine configuration, which is now standard on all delivered 737s, is an improved design that includes high and low pressure turbine modification. Coupled with drag reduction improvements that Boeing started phasing into 737 production earlier this year, it will result in lower fuel consumption and maintenance cost savings.

The new engine is part of the 737 performance improvement package that Boeing began testing in November 2010 with the goal of reducing fuel consumption by 2 percent. Other fuel performance incorporations will take place into 2012 and data analysis will continue to quantify the final benefit to customers.

“We continue to review performance flight test data and collect delivery data,” said John Hamilton, vice president and chief project engineer – 737 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The improved fuel savings is part of our commitment to deliver market-leading value to Next-Generation 737 customers.”

Boeing's continuous efforts to improve the Next-Generation 737 family have resulted in an accumulated 5 percent gain in fuel efficiency since the first airplane delivered in 1998. The new improvements will give operators an airplane that is up to 7 percent more efficient than the first Next-Generation 737s delivered.

Boeing and ANA Conclude 787 Service Ready Operational Validation

Boeing (NYSE: BA) and ANA completed the 787 service ready operational validation in Japan over the weekend. As part of the validation, ANA pilots, together with Boeing, flew the Dreamliner on routes from Seattle to Tokyo and Tokyo to four airports across Japan, including Osaka (Itami and Kansai), Okayama and Hiroshima. Maintenance and ground crews from ANA also gained experience with the airplane in the simulated operational environment.
"Giving our team a chance to work with the airplane prior to entry into service was very valuable," said Katsunori Shimazaki, ANA corporate planning senior manager and the airline's leader of the validation. "Our crews are excited to begin operating the first 787 revenue flights later this year."
Teams from ANA and Boeing validated more than a hundred procedures, including towing the airplane, conducting fit checks of ground support equipment, staging electronic flight bag data and completing maintenance actions, among other activities.
"The successful conclusion of this effort further validates our plans for entering the first all-new airplane of the 21st century into service with our launch customer ANA," said Mike Fleming, 787 services and support vice president. "Our teams worked well together and the airplane performed as we expected."
At each airport, hundreds of enthusiasts and reporters gathered to witness the 787's arrival from Tokyo. Combined, several thousand people celebrated the Dreamliner's presence in Japan.
"It has been incredible to see the enthusiasm for the 787 every place we've gone," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "With its improvements in comfort and environmental performance, passengers are clearly eager to experience the 787 for themselves."
ANA's first scheduled service with the 787 will be either the Tokyo Haneda-Okayama or Tokyo Haneda-Hiroshima route when deliveries begin later this year.
ANA has 55 Dreamliners on order. ANA will deploy the 787 across its route network as an integral part of its strategy to strengthen its position and support its growth and expansion plans.
