· Combined order is for four E190-E2 and four E195-E2
· Six aircraft – four E190-E2, two E195-E2 from Azorra
· Two E195-E2 are new firm Royal Jordanian orders direct with Embraer
São José dos Campos, Brazil, May 18, 2023 – Embraer (NYSE: ERJ; B3: EMBR3) and commercial aviation lessor Azorra today announced a new eight aircraft deal with Royal Jordanian Airlines, Jordan’s flag carrier. The agreement will see the introduction of both the E190-E2 and E195-E2 to the airline’s fleet. Aircraft deliveries are expected to begin in Q4 2023.
The agreement covers eight commercial aircraft, four E190-E2 and four E195-E2, with a list price value of $635M. Six aircraft, four E190-E2 and two E195-E2 come from Azorra’s existing backlog with Embraer. Two further E195-E2s are firm orders with Embraer directly from the airline, which were added to Embraer’s Q4 2022 backlog as ‘undisclosed’.
Building on the announcement made by Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) in October last year, in which the airline revealed its plans to expand its fleet with new generation aircraft, E2 was specifically chosen for its superior performance and operational efficiency. The aircraft is aligned with RJ's strategic goals to renew and grow the fleet that is deployed to destinations within the Levant. The airline’s strategic plan is to further boost RJ’s position as the preferred airline in the region by offering improved connectivity to a wider network, positioning Amman as the leading gateway to the Levant.
Samer Majali, Vice Chairman and CEO of Royal Jordanian Airlines, said: "Following extensive feasibility studies, RJ selected Embraer’s E2 as the best fit for its financial objectives and network strategy. RJ has been operating Embraer aircraft for 15 years, and the E2 reduces the investment cost of pilot training and spare parts provisioning significantly, whilst also lowering crew scheduling and maintenance costs. The aircraft also provides 25% fuel savings compared to current aircraft, resulting in operating cost savings as well as significant carbon emissions reductions supporting the airline’s environmental strategy and targets. We are also pleased to, once again, work with the Azorra team. We appreciate their confidence in RJ and the E2".
“We are delighted to welcome Royal Jordanian as Azorra’s newest E2 customer, continuing our team’s longstanding relationship with the airline that began with a single Embraer E175 well over a decade ago. Royal Jordanian’s selection of the E2 underscores our belief that it is a natural next step for existing E1 operators, providing next generation economic and
environmental efficiencies, while maintaining the familiarity and dependability offered by Embraer,” said Azorra’s Chief Executive Officer, John Evans.
Arjan Meijer, CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “We are honored to be selected by Royal Jordanian Airlines to provide the next generation of regional aircraft, a central part of the airline’s major fleet modernization plan. The E2 family of advanced-generation jets offer the quietest, lowest polluting, and most fuel-efficient aircraft in the under 150-seat market. E195-E2 completes 100% SAF flight testing
Embraer and Pratt & Whitney have successfully tested a GTF-powered E195-E2 aircraft on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The test, with one engine running on 100% SAF, validated that GTF engines and the E-Jets E2 family can fly on both engines with blends of up 100% SAF without any compromise to safety or performance. The aircraft completed two days of ground tests at Fort Lauderdale International Airport, culminating in a 70-minute flight test at Vero Beach Regional Airport in Florida.
“The E2 is already the most efficient single aisle aircraft flying today, saving up to 25% CO2 emissions compared to previous generation aircraft. This reduction in emissions can be increased up to an impressive 85% with 100% SAF. Replacement of older aircraft by new generation products and scaling up SAF production are the two most effective actions commercial aviation can take now to achieve a significant reduction in emissions,” said Rodrigo Silva e Souza, vice president strategy and sustainability, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Embraer and Pratt & Whitney are leading the industry with products that are more efficient for our customers and more sustainable for our society. This test demonstrates that the E2 is ready for 100% SAF certification and operation once the industry finalizes standards.”
All Pratt & Whitney engines and Embraer aircraft are currently certified to operate with SAF blended up to 50% with standard Jet A/A1 kerosene, according to ASTM International specifications. Future specifications will enable blends of up to 100% SAF to maximize the emissions reduction potential of using fuel derived from sustainable, non-fossil-based feedstocks.
“SAF is a core part of our sustainability road map, and we continue to work with industry partners and regulators to support the development of a drop-in standard for 100% SAF,” said Graham Webb, chief sustainability officer at Pratt & Whitney. “This test proves that GTF engines can operate on any fuel, and that the E-Jets E2 family is ready for 100% SAF certification once the industry finalizes the standard for unblended SAF.”
The SAF used by Embraer and Pratt & Whitney was 100% Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosine (HEFA-SPK) acquired from World Energy. HEFA-SPK is a specific type of hydrotreated renewable feedstock fuel used in aviation and is considered a leading alternative replacement for conventional jet fuel by the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI), due to the sustainability of its feedstock.
The Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine is the only geared propulsion system delivering industry-leading sustainability benefits and world-class operating costs. The Embraer E195-E2 powered by GTF engines represent the most environmentally friendly combination of airframe and engine delivering the lowest level of noise and emissions.

E195-E2 Readies for Porter Airlines Delivery with Cold Soak Test
What happens to an airplane when it sits for 10 hours at -35C or less? That’s what a cold soak test determines.
We just completed that test for the E195-E2 last week in Yellowknife and Iqaluit, Canada. The environment was ideal for measuring the effect of prolonged cold on the aircraft’s operations and systems. The test measures the impact on more than 200 items. After the “soak,” Embraer’s flight team flew the aircraft to check its flying behavior. There was another round of checks by the ground crew after the E195-E2 landed.
The E195-E2 already passed the cold soak test during its original certification years ago with EASA and other regulators. That test was conducted inside a hangar which simulated ultra-low outdoor temperature conditions. Transport Canada, however, requires the E195-E2 to be tested in a natural environment, and not in a lab resembling a huge refrigerator, before the first aircraft can be delivered to Porter Airlines later this year.
The E2s are no strangers to cold weather. Embraer established Pioneer Airlines in 2017 to accelerate certification of the new E-Jet family. The in-house airline used several E2s that flew in simulated airline operations, including high frequency, high-cycle schedules, and cold weather flying in North America. The results helped advance the maturity of the aircraft to ensure high reliability at service entry.
