SPECIAL LIVERY - Eurowings Holidays flies the “world’s fastest glasses”

Airbus A321neo now flying in special livery for tour operator

Flying ambassador promotes flexible holiday packages from a single source
Mallorca still the number one vacation destination in summer 2025
‘Mallorca shuttle’: 400 flights per week to PMI from 26 airports in Europe
Palma is Eurowings' largest base outside Germany with eight aircraft stationed there

Eurowings Holidays, the growing tour operator of Germany's largest leisure airline, has a new flying ambassador: an Airbus A321neo is now flying with XXL sunglasses perched oversized on the nose of the aircraft's cockpit. The ‘world's fastest sunglasses’ advertise Eurowings Holidays' attractive vacation packages on flights and at airports throughout Europe. The tour operator, which Eurowings spun off as a separate company in spring 2025, is set to undergo significant expansion and is expected to become one of the industry's ‘top 10’ players.

It is no coincidence that an Airbus A321neo was chosen for the special livery. With more than 230 seats, the aircraft with the registration number ‘D-AEEA’ is the perfect choice for Eurowings' ‘Mallorca shuttle’. It is primarily used for flights to the Balearic Islands to meet the high demand for non-stop flights to Europe's most popular vacation destination. The Airbus A321neo is one of the most efficient and quiet jets in the world. During the 2025 summer holidays, the longest and largest medium-range Airbus once again flew many thousands of travel-loving passengers on holiday. Eurowings connects the island's capital, Palma, with 26 airports across Europe up to 400 times a week.

‘We fly over 20 million people on holiday every year. As Germany's largest leisure airline, we felt it was only logical to give one of our aircraft a suitable vacation-ready look,’ says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. "From now on, our A321neo will fly with XXL sunglasses – so that our guests not only reach their destination quickly, but also look really cool while doing so. Going forward, the motto at Eurowings Holidays will be: put on your sunglasses, fasten your seatbelts and off you go on your dream vacation!"

ORDER - Eurowings sets sights on the largest fleet modernization in its history

Germany's second-largest airline receives green light for 40 new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft

Billion-euro investment brings significant CO2 reduction and improved environmental footprint
Delivery of the first brand-new Boeing jet in 2027 Carsten Spohr, CEO Lufthansa Group: “Welldeserved
and strong signal for a successful future of Eurowings”
Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof: “We have the responsibility to reconcile economic and ecological topics”

The go-ahead has been given for one of the largest fleet modernizations in European aviation: Lufthansa Group has decided to allocate 40 brand-new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft that have been ordered to Eurowings. The gradual integration of new short and medium-haul jets will pave the way for Eurowings to operate one of the youngest fleets in European air traffic in the future.

The approval does not just provide Lufthansa Group's value airline with state-of-the-art jets and engines that have particularly low fuel consumption and noise emissions thanks to their efficiency: Eurowings is also making significant progress towards more sustainable flying, as the latest generation of jets consumes up to 30 percent less kerosene and emits correspondingly less CO2. The order for 40 brand-new 737 aircraft is equivalent to an investment of around five billion dollars at list price. This makes it by far the largest and most expensive sustainability project in the more than 30-year history of Eurowings.

Modern travel experience, more range, more seats
The Cologne-based airline has grown dynamically since the end of the pandemic and has established a strong position among the most popular airlines in Europe in what is known as “point-to-point traffic”. The British rating agency Skytrax named the company a four-star airline last year. Eurowings is now Germany's largest leisure airline and is the market leader at airports such as Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn.

Delivery of the first Boeing 737-8 MAX to Eurowings is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will be completed with a total of 40 jets by 2032. The new aircraft will gradually replace the Airbus A319 fleet as well as older Airbus A320 models. With its capacity for 189 passengers, the Boeing 737-8 MAX offers 39 additional seats compared to the A319. Its significantly longer range also makes it the perfect choice for longer medium-haul destinations, which Eurowings is increasingly offering in its portfolio. Eurowings guests can look forward to a redesigned cabin with more comfort on board and a travel experience that meets the latest airline standards.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of the Lufthansa Group:

“Eurowings has established itself as the European point-to-point airline of the Lufthansa Group with a convincing strategy and thanks to its outstanding employees in an extremely competitive market. The company’s strategic focus on expanding its tourism business and its consistent expansion in Europe is paying off for the entire Lufthansa Group. Our decision today is a well-deserved and strong signal for a successful future of Eurowings.”

Jens Bischof, CEO Eurowings:
“Economic success makes Eurowings attractive for investment. At the same time, we have a responsibility to reconcile economic and ecological topics. With 40 state-of-the-art aircraft, we are laying the foundations for a successful Eurowings future that is geared towards ambitious sustainability goals. The largest investment in our company's history shows that we are making rapid progress towards low-emission flying – through significantly lower fuel consumption, lower emissions and significantly less noise. The high cost efficiency of the new jets also enables us to continue to offer Eurowings customers fair and attractive fares. Without such a technological leap, an airline will hardly be able to operate successfully on the market in the 2030s.”

ORDER - Lufthansa Group sells, leases back nine Eurowings A320/1neo

Lufthansa Group has sold five A320-200Ns and three A321-200NX operated by Eurowings (EW, Düsseldorf) to an undisclosed lessor and will lease them back for six years.

Global law firm Freshfields, which advised the German holding on the transaction, said the move had generated proceeds of over USD400 million for the group. Deals were closed between July and November 2024, and the proceeds will be used to finance Lufthansa Group's ongoing fleet renewal programme.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that Eurowings operates seven A320-200Ns and five A321-200NX. The carrier's fleet also includes twenty-eight A319-100s, thirty-one A320-200s, and six A321-200s. Eurowings Europe (Malta) operates a further four A319s, nineteen A320-200s, and one A320-200N.

Premiere on the route from Düsseldorf to Mallorca

First scheduled Eurowings flight with the new Airbus A320neo

• Eurowings takes first A320neo into service, with six more to follow in 2022

• First flight from Düsseldorf to Mallorca fully booked

• Barcelona, Lisbon, Milan and Vienna added to route network

• 50% less noise, 20% lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions

• A320neo as sustainability ambassador for Lufthansa Group initiative #makechangefly

• Newly designed Airspace Cabin for even more passenger comfort

Eurowings officially put its first Airbus A320neo into scheduled service. At 6:35 a.m. local time, the aircraft with the registration D-AENA took off for its first commercial flight under flight number EW9584, carrying 180 passengers from Düsseldorf to Palma de Mallorca.

The A320neo aircraft will initially fly from Düsseldorf to Málaga, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Dresden, Geneva, Hamburg, Lisbon, Lyon, Munich, Milan, Palma de Mallorca, Prague, Vienna and Zurich. After an introductory phase, the A320neo will then also take off from Hamburg Airport.

The A320neo as sustainability ambassador for #makechangefly

The Airbus A320neo is by far the most efficient and quiet short- and medium-haul jet in the world and the most visible sign yet of a series of more than 50 sustainability initiatives at Eurowings. With leading technology from Airbus and CFM LEAP, the aircraft has a significantly improved environmental performance compared to previous generations: with a 50 percent reduction in noise emissions, an up to 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and a total investment of more than USD 1.5 billion, the new fleet addition is the most expensive investment project in Eurowings' nearly 30-year corporate history.

"Together with the Lufthansa Group, we want to fly at the top of the competition in all areas, also and especially when it comes to sustainability," said Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. The brand-new Eurowings aircraft, which is equipped with a special logo, is one of the first ambassadors for the recently launched, broad-based sustainability initiative of the Lufthansa Group, #makechangefly. It bundles the most important projects for achieving the climate goals that the Lufthansa Group has set for itself: carbon-neutral by 2050.

More to come in 2022: addition of six additional A320neo aircraft

Eurowings will receive a total of 13 aircraft with the new engine model: eight A320neo aircraft with 180 seats each and five A321neo aircraft with 232 seats each. Following the entry into service of the first A320neo, six more aircraft will be put into service in 2022 and one more in 2024. Five Airbus A321neo will be delivered to Eurowings in the course of 2023. The introduction of the aircraft into service is part of Eurowings' wide-ranging activities and measures to significantly reduce aircraft noise and carbon emissions.

Redesigned Airspace Cabin for even more passenger comfort

The baggage compartments in the new Airspace Cabin have a 40 percent larger volume and can even hold 60 percent more suitcases, as these can be stowed in the compartments vertically. Another highlight is the new flexible lighting system, which adjusts itself based on the passengers' biorhythms depending on the phase of the flight and time of day and illuminates the cabin in either warm orange or cooler blue tones.
