FLEET - RAM to place large order before the end of 2024

Moroccan newoutlet Al-Sharq is reporting that Royal Air Maroc is set to place a large order before the end of this year. Quoting the CEO of the airline, the airline is planning to order up to 188 new aircraft to renew and expand its fleet.
According to IATA, passenger-numbers to and from Morocco are set to grow with 50% by 2043 compared to 2024. The country is also organizing various large sporting events like the Africa Cup in 2025 and the UEFA World Championship (with Spain and Portugal) in 2030.

Royal Air Maroc envisions a fleet of around 200 aircraft in the future, which will be four times the fleet it has today. The airline has issued Requests for Proposals (RfP) to Airbus, Boeing and Embraer. Although, historically, RAM has been a loyal Boeing-customer, the CEO has explicitly stated its open to all manufacturers. It's expected that Airbus-aircraft will be heavily pitched by the French President while conducting a state visit to Moroccoat the end of October.
The fleet of the airline is today made-up of six ATR72-600s, 28 Boeing B737-800s, two B737-8s, a single B767-300ERBCF, five B787-8s, four B787-9s, and four Embraer ERJ190s.

Royal Air Maroc outlines staff, fleet cuts as state steps in

Royal Air Maroc (AT, Casablanca Int'l) has reached an agreement with its sole shareholder, the Moroccan government, over a financial support package which will require the airline to implement drastic fleet and personnel cuts.

According to Morocco's Medias24 portal, the government and the Hassan II Fund should provide support in a variety of forms (i.e. guarantees, debt, and equity purchases) to the airline which has been losing MAD50 million Moroccan dirhams (USD5.16 million) per day as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Although an exact figure was not specified, previous media reports have pointed to RAM being granted a package valued at more than MAD16 billion dirhams (USD1.65 billion).

In return, RAM's chief executive Abdelhamid Addou told a workers council meeting on July 2 that the airline would implement the following cuts:
858 staff will be retrenched, including 180 pilots and 500 cabin crew. Around 13% of ground staff, not counting those employed at subsidiaries such as RAM Handling, will also be let go with recent recruits and those who have been with the airline for less than three years affected. Staff aged 57 and over and who have been at the airline for at least 15 years will also be offered voluntary redundancy packages, subject to board approval.
Against the backdrop of anticipated weak demand expected to run through to 2023, 20 aircraft will be decommissioned and possibly disposed of including four B787s (variant unspecified), four ERJ 190-100ARs (all leased from Nordic Aviation Capital), and twelve B737s. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, RAM's fleet includes six ATR72-600s, six B737-700s, two B737-8s, thirty-one B737-800s, five B787-8s, four B787-9s, and one B767-300(ERBCF). The report did not specify whether sale/lease-back agreements would be pursed as opposed to outright aircraft sales, given the bulk of RAM's fleet is wholly-owned with just 14 aircraft - ten B737-800s and the Embraers - leased from third parties.

A formal statement by RAM's line ministry, the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, and Logistics, is expected later this week.

RAM hints at fleet expansion involving over 50 aircraft

Royal Air Maroc has signalled that it is preparing for an extensive fleet expansion possibly involving upwards of 50 aircraft.

The airline’s chief executive, Abdelhamid Addou, told FlightGlobal during a Oneworld alliance event in London that a formal request could be issued by June.

While he would not specify the precise number of aircraft involved, Addou said the carrier was seeking “many” – both long- and short-haul types – and signalled that the figure could be more than 50.

He says a “small number” would be taken for replacement, but that RAM was concentrating on expansion.

Casablanca-based RAM joined Oneworld towards the end of last year, becoming the alliance’s first African member.

It has been modernising with Boeing 787s – the carrier has five -8s and a single -9, and is taking three more -9s by the end of June, says Addou.

RAM is also introducing Boeing 737 Max 8s. The airline has a fleet of nearly 40 737s, primarily -800s, and also uses a handful of Embraer 190s. The regional subsidiary, RAM Express, operates a small fleet of ATR turboprops

RAM shows off colours for first Max and 787-9

Moroccan flag-carrier Royal Air Maroc has shown off a special livery which will adorn its initial Boeing 737 Max and 787-9.
The airline is already a 787-8 and 737-800 operator, but has four 787-9s on order with Boeing.
RAM has previously signalled that it is likely to take the 737 Max, although Boeing does not list any order for the re-engined type from the carrier.
ts revised livery heavily features the green and red colours of the Moroccan flag on the aft fuselage.

RAM says the colour scheme “combines aerodynamics and modernity” and “reflects contemporary Moroccan culture”.:
