A strategic A350 XWB order from Japan Airlines expands Airbus’ presence in the Japanese market

Japan Airlines’ order for 31 A350 XWBs brings the first Japanese carrier into the customer list for this next-generation extra-widebody jetliner, and further expands Airbus’ market presence in the island nation for its jetliner product line.

Today’s announcement of this important booking – involving both the benchmark A350-900 and longer-fuselage A350-1000 versions – makes Japan Airlines the seventh currently-operating Japanese carrier to have chosen Airbus’ family of modern commercial aircraft, joining AirAsia Japan (soon to be re-designated as Vanilla Air), All Nippon Airways, Jetstar Japan, Peach Aviation, Skymark Airlines and Starflyer.

Airbus aircraft in the region will double during the next five years and the company’s Japanese delivery backlog percentage has tripled from two years ago – representing its growing commercial success in Japan.

Japanese operators have now selected every Airbus modern widebody jetliner type, with Skymark Airlines acquiring six A380s and arranging the lease of 10 A330s. The single-aisle A320 Family has become a cornerstone in fleets of the country’s low-cost carriers, as highlighted by this year’s 100th delivery of an Airbus aircraft to Japan: an A320 received by JetStar Japan.

Airbus has fostered strong industrial connections in the region, with Japanese companies such as Bridgestone, Panasonic, Yokogawa Electric and Minebea contributing to all of Airbus’ current production aircraft. In addition, Toray and Toho Tenax signed a long-term agreement in 2010 to supply carbon fibre for the company’s jetliners.

Japanese partnerships with Airbus range from 17 companies for the double-deck A380, to 12 each for the A320 and A330 families, as well as four for the A350 XWB.

Airbus also benefits from research and technology cooperation in Japan, including: composite research in partnership with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA); and Japan’s Research and Development Institute for Metal and Composites for Future Industries (RIMCOF) – in developing structural health monitoring technology.

Airbus delivered its first aircraft to the Japanese market some three decades ago – an A300 received by TOA Domestic Airlines – and the company established an in-country presence in 2001 with its Airbus

JAL Group Unveils New Set of Uniforms

TOKYO December 20, 2012: JAL Group (JAL) today unveiled the Group’s brand new set of uniforms for approximately 26,700 of its staff members, including flight crew, cabin attendants, various ground staff at the airport and city offices, as well as maintenance staff. The new uniforms will be adopted in the first half of fiscal year 2013 (between April 1 and September 30, 2013).

Created based on the concept of the new JAL Brand, the latest uniforms are sophisticated and coordinated with JAL’s current aircraft livery and airport signage to clearly project a distinguished JAL Group brand image. With the new attires, JAL aims to promote communication with its customers and provide them with a truly enjoyable journey and sense of security. Consolidating the designs across various sections within the JAL Group and conducting a thorough review of the selection and management of the materials used, have also helped realize significant cost savings.

A New Uniform Project Team was established and comprised of passionate employees from various sections to implement this change. Based on a deep sense of gratitude to all parties who had supported JAL, the Project Team worked on the selection of designs and fabric, and provided valuable feedback in the process of developing this new generation of uniforms. For cabin crew and passenger service staff who are always interacting with customers at the frontlines, JAL engaged the help of Japanese fashion designer Keita Maruyama, who conceptualized the design for these uniforms. Incorporating the essence of the employees’ mindsets and feelings for the revitalized JAL Group, Maruyama created a unique style to embody JAL’s spirit of hospitality, and provide aesthetically both beauty and comfort.

Employees in the new uniforms represent a cohesive JAL Group and will extend the most welcoming and assuring reception to all customers. JAL SIGNS AN AGREEMENT TO ADD A NEW EMBRAER 170 JET TO ITS FLEET

After delivering ten EMBRAER 170 jets to Japan Airlines (JAL), Embraer has signed an amendment to the original contract, signed in June 2007 with the Japanese airline, for a new E170 jet. The value of the deal, at list price, is USD 38 million.

As the previous ones, this E170, powered by GE CF34-8E engines, will be configured for 76 passengers, in a single class, and will be operated by J-AIR, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of JAL, serving the company’s regional network in Japan. Delivery is planned for the last quarter of 2012.

“JAL’s latest order is an important recognition of the E-Jets excellent performance in terms of schedule reliability, comfort and economics,” said Paulo Cesar Silva, Embraer President, Commercial Aviation. “We continue to build a solid relationship with JAL, which has been deploying our E-Jets to right-size some of its narrow-body markets and developing new routes across Japan.”

“With this additional EMBRAER 170 order, Japan Airlines continues the process of optimizing its domestic route network, begun in February 2009, when the first E-Jet started commercial service at J-Air. The E170 is extremely popular for a variety of reasons. First, with our business customers because it allows us to add flights as demand in key markets grows; second, our shareholders because of the fleet's economic contribution to our turn-around plan; and third, our Operations Department because it is among the most reliable airplanes we operate today," said Tsuyoshi Yamamura, J-AIR President and JAL Executive Officer.

With the current fleet of ten E170s, J-Air replaced old and inefficient aircraft on routes such as Tokyo-Haneda to Nanki-Shirahama and between Osaka-Itami to Aomori. The airline also re-launched some routes, including Osaka-Itami to Miyazaki, previously flown with old and bigger jets, adjusting capacity to demand.
