KLM Cityhopper Celebrates 60 Years: From Regional Airline to Driving Force of KLM’s European Network

KLM Cityhopper is celebrating its 60th anniversary today. What began in 1966 as Nederlandse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (NLM), with two leased Fokker aircraft and a handful of domestic routes, has grown into an indispensable part of KLM’s network. With 58 aircraft, more than 80 destinations, and over 350 daily flights, KLM Cityhopper connects Europe with the world through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

KLM Cityhopper plays a key role in Schiphol’s hub operations. Each year, it carries around 11 million passengers to destinations across the continent. Passengers from throughout Europe fly with KLM Cityhopper to Amsterdam to connect to KLM’s intercontinental flights. At the same time, travelers from around the world connect through Schiphol to more than 80 European destinations. In this way, KLM Cityhopper contributes to the Netherlands’ global connectivity and KLM’s extensive route network. Destinations added to the network in recent seasons include Biarritz, Exeter, Dubrovnik, Ljubljana, Cork, Jersey, Santiago de Compostela, and Oviedo.

“Sixty years ago, KLM Cityhopper began as a small regional airline. Today, we are an essential part of KLM’s network and play a key role in connecting Europe with the world. This growth is primarily due to the dedication and commitment of our employees. With that same entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, we will continue building the future of regional aviation,” said Maarten Koopmans, Managing Director of KLM Cityhopper.

History

KLM Cityhopper traces its roots to NLM, which was founded in 1966 to provide fast connections between different regions of the Netherlands. Over the following decades, its network steadily expanded to include destinations across Europe. The Cityhopper name was added in 1976, followed by a merger with NetherLines in 1991 and the integration of KLM UK, ultimately creating KLM Cityhopper.

A Testing Ground for Innovation

As a smaller, agile organization, KLM Cityhopper regularly tests innovations for the broader KLM organization. This enables it to play a pioneering role in operational optimization, sustainability, and new ways of working.

One example is the introduction of virtual reality training for KLM Cityhopper pilots—a valuable and sustainable training method that supplements conventional simulator and in-flight training. Another example is OptiClimb, an application that helps reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions during the climb phase of a flight. Based on flight data such as weight, weather conditions, aircraft type, and route, OptiClimb recommends a speed to the flight crew that allows the aircraft to reach cruising altitude as efficiently as possible.

KLM Cityhopper is also taking part in The Aviation Challenge for the fourth year. As part of the challenge, it is testing new solutions involving artificial intelligence, sustainable aviation fuels, weight reduction, reduced food waste, and the electrification of ground operations.

A Quiet, Fuel-Efficient, and Effective Fleet

KLM Cityhopper remains focused on advancing regional aviation. In the coming years, it will concentrate on further optimizing its network, adding new destinations, and maintaining a modern, efficient, and sustainable fleet.

After operating aircraft made by Dutch manufacturer Fokker for several decades, the airline opted for an Embraer fleet in 2008. Today, Embraer aircraft form the backbone of its operations. The latest-generation Embraer E195-E2 is one of today’s quietest, most fuel-efficient, and most effective passenger aircraft.

KLM Embraer 195 E2 back into service after a temporary grounding at Twente Airport

In 2024, KLM Cityhopper temporarily parked four Embraer 195 E2 aircraft at Twente Airport due to problems with engine availabillity. To provide optimal protection for the aircraft during this period, they were innovatively encased in a so-called “cocoon.” Engine availability has since returned to normal, and the aircraft can gradually return to service. This week, the second aircraft will be unpacked.

KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer 195 E2 aircraft are equipped with engines from the Pratt & Whitney GTF series. In 2024, this manufacturer faced issues regarding engine availability, temporarily rendering the aircraft unusable. Twente Airport, part of Technology Base, proved to be an extremely suitable location for temporary storage. In addition to operational capabilities, the airport also offers facilities for testing, training, and technical maintenance.

Careful preparation and innovative protection

Before the four Embraer 195 E2s were parked at Twente Airport in 2024, they were prepared for long-term storage in accordance with the instructions of aircraft manufacturer Embraer. Engines, auxiliary power units (APUs), and batteries were removed from the aircraft. The aircraft were then completely wrapped in special film—a “cocoon”—to protect both the exterior and interior from weather conditions and other external factors. The wrapping process took six weeks.

Return to Service

Now that availability from Pratt & Whitney has improved, KLM Cityhopper’s aircraft are being gradually prepared for return to service. This week, one of the aircraft is being unpacked: PH-NXA. The protective cover is being removed, the wheels are being installed, and the aircraft is being prepared for initial testing. The aircraft will then undergo a comprehensive check and an airworthiness inspection. Various modifications will also be implemented, such as the installation of Wi-Fi. This process takes approximately two months, after which the aircraft will be fully available again for KLM Cityhopper operations.

The last two Embraer 195 E2s currently still at Twente Airport are expected to return to service this fall.

SPECIAL COLOURS - KLM Cityhopper Welcomes 25th Embraer 195-E2

Arrival of our 25th Embraer 195-E2

Following a successful test flight and final inspection at aircraft manufacturer Embraer in Brazil, the 25th Embraer 195-E2 has arrived at Schiphol Airport. This marks a significant milestone in KLM Cityhopper’s ongoing renewal of its European fleet.

Maarten Koopmans, Managing Director of KLM Cityhopper: “This aircraft truly represents the flagship of our KLM Cityhopper fleet. It consumes less fuel and is considerably quieter than its predecessor. In addition, ergonomically designed seats, increased legroom, USB ports, and larger overhead bins offer our passengers enhanced comfort. Fleet renewal remains a key priority, and we’re already looking forward to the next steps.”

Quieter and More Efficient
The Embraer 195-E2 uses 15% less fuel per flight and emits 34% less CO₂ per passenger compared to its smaller predecessor, the Embraer 190. It is also 63% quieter, helping to reduce noise pollution around airports. With a capacity of 136 passengers, the 195-E2 is the largest aircraft in the KLM Cityhopper fleet. KLM Cityhopper now operates 61 aircraft, serving 80 European destinations. The newest addition will begin service at the end of September.

Fleet Renewal

KLM is investing seven billion euros in fleet renewal over the coming years. For European routes, this includes not only the Embraer 195-E2 operated by KLM Cityhopper, but also Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft, ten of which have already been delivered. For intercontinental flights, KLM has recently added new Boeing 787s to its fleet. The first Airbus A350 is expected in 2026, followed by the introduction of A350F freighters in 2027. These aircraft will also significantly contribute to reducing emissions and noise levels.

Takes First Embraer E195-E2

KLM Cityhopper, the regional subsidiary of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, received their first Embraer E195-E2 in a ceremony today at Embraer’s facility in Brazil. This first E2 delivery to KLM, and lessor ICBC Aviation Leasing, brings the total number of Embraer jets in the KLM Cityhopper fleet to 50. The total order for 35 jets, 25 firm orders with options for 10 more, will be leased to KLM from ICBC Aviation Leasing (10) and Aircastle (15). KLM recently exercised four options increasing the firm order from 21 to 25 jets, with the further four aircraft coming from Aircastle’s existing order-book. KLM is a global leader in airline sustainability and taking action to make operations more sustainable. KLM’s fleet renewal is a key strategy to reduce the airline’s environmental footprint. The E195-E2, Embraer’s new generation aircraft, is specifically designed to cut emissions and noise pollution. The E2’s environmental credentials are impressive; the E195-E2 delivers a 31% reduction in carbon emissions per seat over KLM Cityhopper’s first-generation E190s. Noise pollution is also dramatically reduced; the noise footprint is over 60% smaller – a critical measure at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport which has strict noise abatement rules. The E2’s low external noise level is already well below planned future ICAO limits. Carbon emissions are almost 10% lower per trip and 31% lower per seat. In a typical year, each E195-E2 will emit 1,500 fewer tons of carbon pollutants. “The new E2 is really going to make a difference,” said Warner Rootliep, Managing Director of KLM Cityhopper. “The addition of the E195-E2 to our fleet is a vital part of our plan to reduce our carbon footprint at least 50% per pax/km by 2030. The 195-E2 is not only an economically attractive aircraft, it also fits perfectly within our sustainability initiative – ‘Fly Responsibly’. We are now more than ever committed to reducing the impact of our environmental and ecological footprint. Fleet renewal is currently the largest contributor to CO2 reduction.” “This amazing aircraft dressed in the famous blue of KLM, delivers a new level of sustainability because of its low emissions and noise levels.” said Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “It’s the cleanest and quietest single aisle aircraft on the market today. KLM leads the airline industry in bold climate initiatives. KLM’s decision to choose the Embraer E2 is a powerful endorsement of the E2’s role in achieving those environmental goals.” The E195-E2 is the 50th E-Jet to join the KLM Cityhopper fleet of 17 first-generation E175s and 32 E190s. The new E195-E2 is configured with 132 seats - 20 in Business Class, eight in Economy Comfort, and 104 in Economy Class.

KLM Cityhopper Recebeu Primeiro Embraer E175 De Nova Geração
