DUBAI AIR SHOW - ORDER - Emirates Orders 65 More Boeing 777X Airplanes

  • Largest 777X customer grows 777X order book to 270 jets

  • Order for 65 777-9s supports the airline's expansion amid growing travel demand

DUBAI, UAE, Nov. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire(opens in a new tab)/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Emirates announced today the world's largest international airline has placed its third order for 777X airplanes to fuel future expansion and meet growing travel demand. The new order for 65 777-9 passenger jets was announced during a signing at the Dubai Airshow.

Emirates, which has grown its global network with the Boeing 777 as its flagship, is one of the launch customers for the new 777X family and placed two previous orders totaling 205 airplanes. The new purchase brings Emirates' 777X order – consisting of the 777-9 and 777-8 models – to 270 airplanes, further cementing its position as the largest 777X customer.

"Emirates is already the world's largest Boeing 777 operator, and we are expanding our commitment to the program today with additional orders for 65 Boeing 777-9s," said HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive, Emirates Airline and Group. "This is a long-term commitment to our partnership with Boeing and to U.S. aerospace."

"Each of our aircraft on order have been carefully factored into Emirates' growth plan, which is aligned to Dubai's growth plans," Al Maktoum continued.

Building on the success of the 777, the 777-9 will be the world's largest twin-engine jet and set new standards in efficiency and passenger experience. The 777-9 will reduce fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes it replaces. Passengers will travel comfortably with a wider, more spacious cabin, better humidity levels, a smoother ride and more natural light.

"We are deeply honored that Emirates has once again selected the Boeing 777X to power its future as the airline refreshes its world-class fleet and expands its vaunted global network," said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Boeing has been a proud supporter of Emirates over the past 40 years as the airline has grown into one of the world's leading carriers and developed a reputation for excellence and innovation. We look forward to growing our partnership and for Emirates to fly Boeing airplanes for decades to come."

Major carriers around the world have selected the 777X and its robust design to handle high-capacity, long-range routes, including flights through harsh operational environments.

Boeing's 2025 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO) projects sustained Middle East demand for widebody airplanes, with the region expected to need nearly 3,000 new widebody jets over the next 20 years.

FLEET - Etihad Airways Continues Fleet Expansion with Boeing Agreement

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is further expanding its fleet, confirming an order for 28 wide-body Boeing aircraft. Since 2023, the airline has steadily grown its fleet as part of a long-term strategy to double in size by 2030. This reflects Etihad’s ongoing approach to aligning its fleet with evolving network and operational needs.

The agreement includes a mix of Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft, powered by GE engines and supported by a services package. These aircraft are expected to join the fleet from 2028 onwards and will support Etihad’s existing plans for growth in connectivity, operational efficiency, and guest experience.

“This commitment reflects our approach of carefully managing our fleet and expanding in line with demand and our long-term network plans,” said Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Airways. “Since 2023, we’ve made consistent additions to our fleet, and this latest step ensures we continue to meet our future requirements.”

Etihad is currently finalising a detailed plan that will shape the airline’s strategy through to 2035. The additional Boeing aircraft will form part of that evolving roadmap, ensuring the airline is well positioned to deliver extraordinary customer experiences and to remain financially self sustainable.

“This addition reflects Abu Dhabi’s ongoing investment in aviation as a key enabler of connectivity, tourism, and trade,” said Neves. “Etihad’s continued growth supports broader economic opportunity in the UAE and beyond.”

"As a long-time operator of the 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, we are excited to welcome Boeing's newest 777X family into our world-class fleet," said Kao Shing-Hwang, chairman of China Airlines. "The advanced technology and features of the 777-9 will provide our customers with the best-in-class flying experience, while the 777-8 Freighter's range and fuel-efficiency will enable us to maintain a leadership position in air cargo. This is a significant investment toward our future, and we will rely on the new 777X family to help realize our long-term sustainability goals."

The world's largest twin-engine jet, the 777-9 will offer 20% lower fuel use and emissions than the airplanes it replaces, as well as the lowest operating cost per seat of any airplane as it connects far-flung destinations with a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km). The 777-9 will allow China Airlines to maximize capacity with 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration while offering exceptional comfort with a more spacious cabin environment.

"The 777X will enable us to deliver an enhanced travel experience and greater reliability for our customers," added Chen Han-Ming, president of China Airlines.

Given the interoperability of the 777X with its current Boeing twin-engine freighters, China Airlines plans to renew its fleet with the new 777-8 Freighter, which offers 747-sized payload capability along with a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions and up to a 60% smaller noise footprint.

"As we welcome China Airlines to the 777X customer family, we are pleased to build on our nearly 60-year partnership that traces back to the 707 and 727," said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. FLEET - Lufthansa to take first B777X delivery in 2026 - Boeing

Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International) will be the launch customer of the B777X family with the first delivery taking place in 2026, Boeing’s management said during the company’s 2024 fourth quarter investors call.

Kelly Ortberg, president and chief executive of Boeing, said that "the first 777X delivery is to Lufthansa", while also referring to the "seat challenges" that the German carrier has been facing.

Brian J West, executive vice president for finance and chief financial officer at Boeing, then elaborated: “Flight testing [for the 777X] recently resumed, and we still expect first delivery in 2026, and we will continue to follow the lead of the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] as we move through certification.”

Deliveries of the first B777X are now running over five years behind the original schedule. In August 2024, Boeing grounded its B777-9 test fleet over structural issues as the company detected thrust link failures. Addressing these problems, Ortberg said: “We have a good handle on fixing the thrust link issue we uncovered.”

The B777X family consists of the B777-8, B777-8F, and B777-9 types. Lufthansa has ordered twenty of the latter and seven of the freighter model for Lufthansa Cargo, as shown in the ch-aviation fleets module.

Overall, Boeing has received orders for 540 aircraft from the B777X family from 12 identified customers, with Emirates (EK, Dubai International) having the most significant order, expecting thirty-five B777-8s and 170 B777-9s.

Lufthansa was not immediately available for comment.

FLEET - Korean Air mulls B777X order

Korean Air (KE, Seoul Incheon) is reportedly in talks to acquire at least ten B777X, according to Reuters. Citing industry sources, the news agency said talks were ongoing but no firm decisions had been made.

The report comes after the Korean airline placed an order with Airbus for twenty-seven A350-1000s and six A350-900s earlier this month. Following the Airbus order, Korean Air CEO Walter Cho told CNBC that the airline intended to place more orders and was in talks with Boeing.

"We've been their customer, we've been their user for a long, long time, [and] a satisfied customer of their B777s," he said. "That's what I'm looking at right now, and hopefully soon we'll be announcing that as well."

A Korean Air spokesman told ch-aviation that the airline remained in active discussions with manufacturers. However, he declined to provide any further details.

Now eleven years in the planning and development, Boeing hopes to have the B777X certified and rolling off the assembly lines next year. Boeing delivery data shows customers have placed orders for 481 of the type, including 205 due to Emirates (EK, Dubai International). When in production, it will be the world's biggest twin-engine aircraft with the largest variant, the B777-9, able to carry over 420 passengers in a two-class configuration.

Korean Air is a traditional Boeing customer, with 107 of its current 163 aircraft supplied by the North American manufacturer. However, in recent years, the airline has placed several orders with Airbus. Korean Air's current Airbus-supplied aircraft include ten A220-300s, ten A321-200NX, five A330-200s, twenty-one A330-300s, and ten A380-800s, although not all are in service. Aside from the A350 order, the airline also has thirty-nine A321-200N and one A321-200NX on order. Its outstanding Boeing orders comprise twenty-two B737-8s, twenty B787-10s, and seven B787-9s.

FLEET / ORDER - Ethiopian Airlines to Expand Widebody Fleet with Up to 20 Boeing 777X Jets

- With commitment for eight 777-9s and up to 12 more, Ethiopian Airlines is first African customer for highly fuel-efficient 777X passenger jet

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Ethiopian Airlines announced today an agreement for the East African airline to purchase eight 777-9 passenger airplanes and the potential for up to 12 additional jets.

Ethiopian Airlines' selection of 777-9 jets positions the carrier as the first 777X customer in Africa and builds on its landmark 2023 order for 11 787 Dreamliner and 20 737 MAX airplanes to modernize and grow its fleet.

"We are pleased to continue setting the trend in African aviation by adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance our services and customer satisfaction. Improving our operational performance and commitment to environmental sustainability, the 777-9 offers more flexibility, reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions," said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew. "We are grateful to Boeing for their long-standing partnership and support, and we eagerly anticipate flying the 777-9 across the African skies and beyond."

Based on the 777 and with advanced technologies from the 787 Dreamliner family, the 777-9 features new carbon-fiber composite wings and engines that will enable the airplane to achieve 10% better fuel efficiency and operating costs than the competition. The 777-9 will support Ethiopian Airlines' plans to grow and renew its fleet in size, range and passenger and cargo capacity to reach high-demand markets in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.

"Ethiopian Airlines marks yet another first in our longstanding partnership by selecting the 777-9 to be the flagship of its growing fleet," said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. "Building on a relationship that goes back 75 years, we deeply value the unwavering trust and confidence Ethiopian Airlines puts in our airplanes."

Boeing airplanes make up more than half of Ethiopian Airlines' current fleet, including 29 787 Dreamliners, 20 777s, three 767s, 27 Next-Generation 737s and 15 737 MAX jets. Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing continue to explore opportunities to further develop the country's aerospace industry, including support for Ethiopian Airlines' MRO capabilities, industrial development, training capabilities at the Ethiopian Aviation University and STEM education, as well as equipping the Ethiopian Museum of Science with aerospace exhibits.

Boeing's Commercial Market Outlook forecasts Africa's annual air traffic growth at more than 7% through 2042 ─ the third-highest growth rate among global regions and above the global average of approximately 6%. Providing growth opportunities for airlines and offering enhanced features for passengers, with a range of 13,510 km (7,295 nautical miles), the 777-9 enables flights from Addis Ababa to as far as Seattle in the U.S.

Etihad Airways casts doubt on A320neo, B777X orders

Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi Int'l) is evaluating its options concerning the future of its A321-200N and B777X orders, and has yet to confirm that it will actually take the aircraft, Chief Executive Tony Douglas told Reuters.

"The manufactures can't confirm when they are going to be delivered and you have a market that you don't know when it's going to recover," he said, underlining that the Emirati flag carrier was now focused on "sustainable growth".

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Etihad Airways has outstanding orders for twenty-six A321-200Ns, eight B777-8s, and seventeen B777-9s, all dating back to a gigantic deal with both Airbus and Boeing announced during the 2013 Dubai Air Show by Etihad's previous management, led by James Hogan, which had sought to rapidly expand the airline, including through the acquisition of struggling carriers around the world.

Douglas said Etihad had around three years to decide on the future of the A321neo order and even more time to confirm the B777X order. The newest Boeing widebody type is not expected to certify before mid-2023.

While the order for twenty-six A321neo is a relatively minor position in Airbus's order book, a B777X cancellation would be a major blow to the American manufacturer as Etihad holds accounts for almost 10% of all orders for the type globally (25 out of 320 in total) and is just one of three customers of the B777-8 variant (alongside regional rivals Emirates with sixteen orders and Qatar Airways with ten).

The airline also has firm orders for fifteen A350-1000s, eleven B787-9s, and twenty-one B787-10s, which seem less in doubt.

Etihad Airways is already an operator of both the A320 and the B777 Families. Its fleet includes twenty A320-200s and ten A321-200s, as well as nineteen B777-300(ER)s and five B777-200Fs.

Lufthansa interested in B777XF

The CEO of the Lufthansa Group has said to Reuters that the airline is very interested in the freighter-version of the B777X and is currently negotiating with Boeing on a possible order.

Boeing and the airline held initial discussions when the B777-9 prototype N779XW (64240) visited Frankfurt between 18 and 21 November on its way back to Seattle (WA) from its participation in the Dubai Air Show. The CEO, however, also said that many more talks were needed before a final decision was to be made. It's also unclear if a possible order for the B777XF entails a conversion of B777-9s the airline has on order.

Lufthansa has a total of twenty B777-9s on order, which it ordered in November 2013. The first of these is set to arrive in 2023. The Group also operates a fleet of eleven B777Fs with Lufthansa Cargo and twenty at partially owned AeroLogic.

Boeing 777X Arrives in Dubai for 2021 Dubai Airshow - 777-9 flight test airplane makes its international debut, flying non-stop from Seattle to the United Arab Emirates - On display at the Dubai Airshow starting November 14

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, /PRNewswire/ -- The new Boeing [NYSE:BA] 777X arrived at Dubai World Central at 14:02 p.m. (GST) today, ahead of the upcoming Dubai Airshow. The airplane will be on static display and featured in the show's flying program starting November 14.

The 777-9 flight test airplane made a nearly 15-hour nonstop flight from Seattle's Boeing Field to Dubai, the first international flight and longest flight to date for the 777X as it continues to undergo a rigorous test program.

Building on the best of the industry-leading 777 and 787 Dreamliner families, the 777-9 will be the world's largest and most efficient twin-engine jet, delivering 10% better fuel use, emissions and operating costs than the competition and an exceptional passenger experience. The 777X family has a total of 351 orders and commitments from eight leading customers around the globe. First delivery of the airplane is expected in late 2023.

FAA slows Boeing 777X certification

The FAA has denied Boeing to move forward with an important step to certify its newest variant of the Triple Seven, the B777X. It informed the manufacturer in May and said that Boeing would probably need to increase the number of test flights and that the eventual certification is now realistically able in late 2023. This means entry into commercial service would be early 2024, four years later than the original planned 2020.

According to the letter sent to Boeing, the FAA has a long list of concerns which are especially focusing on an "uncommanded pitch event" during a test flight on 8 December 2020. After the event, Boeing planned a major software update but the FAA is not convinced and also states in the letter that "a critical avionics system proposed for the airplane does not meet requirements".

The slowdown of certification of the B777X is another blow to Boeing as it struggles to deliver on other programmes as well. Despite the recertification of the B737MAX after its 21 months of grounding, deliveries are not going as smoothly and were needed to be halted for a while which was also the case for the B787. The manufacturer is also struggling with the KC-46 tanker programme to meet the requirements and deliver on target.

Cathay Pacific in advanced talks over B777X deferrals

Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong Int'l) has confirmed that it is in advanced talks with Boeing regarding the deferral of its B777-9 orders beyond 2023.

"On January 27, 2021, Boeing announced a delay of the 777X programme with delivery of the first aircraft expected in late 2023. Cathay Pacific is in advanced negotiations with regard to the deferral of its B777-9 deliveries," the airline said in its annual financial report.

Cathay Pacific did not provide any further details regarding a revised delivery timeline. It has a total of twenty-one B777-9s on firm order from the manufacturer.

The airline also said that it increased the impairment charge related to aircraft unlikely to return to "meaningful economic activity" from HKD2.46 billion Hong Kong dollars (USD317 million) announced in mid-2020 to HKD2.87 billion (USD370 million).

"At half-year, we have impaired 16 aircraft. This has increased to 34 by the end of the year. We look at whether the aircraft are likely to re-enter meaningful economic service before they are retired, or their leases expire. As a result of this assessment, we have concluded we needed to impair a further 18 aircraft," Chief Financial Officer Rebecca Sharpe said during the investor briefing.

In the second half of the year, the airline formally returned three leased A320-200s, one leased A321-200, and three A330-300s, although the impairment also includes aircraft that remain in storage and have yet to be formally phased-out. Cathay Pacific said that as of December 31, 2020, it had 92 passenger aircraft operated by Cathay Pacific and low-cost carrier subsidiary HK Express in long-term storage at Alice Springs and Ciudad Real airports, where environmental conditions are more favourable for aircraft maintenance.

Despite the ongoing cuts, the airline took delivery of two A321-200Ns, three A350-900s, and one A350-1000 for the mainline, and four A320-200Ns for HK Express in the second half of 2020. The carrier agreed with Airbus to extend deliveries of the remaining three A350-900s and five -1000s, originally due to complete in 2021, through 2023. It also extended the delivery time frame of its thirty A321neo for Cathay Pacific and HK Express, which had been planned to complete in 2023, through 2025.

Sharpe added that the airline evaluated that the aircraft due to return to lessors or be phased-out in the first half of 2022 carry a residual value of HKD800 million (USD103 million). Consequently, should the market recovery slip by six months, the airline would impair these aircraft as they would no longer return to service.

"We are confident in the numbers we presented in our results, we are doing just for transparency and awareness in these very uncertain times," Sharpe underlined.

The airline, which saw passenger demand plummet to below 10% of its pre-pandemic levels, posted a record loss of HKD13.86 billion (USD1.8 billion) in 2020. Almost 60% of its revenues last year came from the cargo sector, which in 2019 contributed less than a quarter of the group's total revenues.

British Airways Says It Will Take Its First Boeing 777X In 2024

The Boeing 777X is set to be the next new aircraft to hit the US manufacturer’s product catalog.
However, its launch has been anything but smooth.
Boeing was due to deliver the first aircraft last year, but delays to the program have caused this to slip several times.
Now the first delivery is planned for late 2023.
IAG reconfirms Boeing 777X delivery timeline British Airways had been expecting its first 777X aircraft next year under the original delivery timeline. Despite several delays to the program, the airline refused to comment on any delay in the delivery of its Boeing jets. However, this all changed today.Buried deep in a 91 page PDF containing British Airways’ owner’s, IAG, financial results, the group outlined its new 777X delivery timeline.
As things stand, British Airways has 18 orders for the larger -9 variant of the aircraft.
While not elaborating on how many would be delivered each year, IAG confirmed that BA would take its 18 planes in the four years from and including 2024 to 2027.
While British Airways has 18 firm orders for the 777-9, it also has 24 options for the type.
This means that if all of the airline’s options are taken up, the airline would have a total of 42 Boeing 777X aircraft.

Second Boeing 777X Completes First Flight

Test fleet expands as robust test program progresses

- First test airplane has logged nearly 100 hours of testing

EVERETT, Wash., April 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today conducted a productive and successful first flight of the second 777X airplane. Capt. Ted Grady, 777X project pilot, and Capt. Van Chaney, 777/777X chief pilot, flew for 2 hours and 58 minutes over Washington state before landing at Seattle's Boeing Field at 2:02 p.m. Pacific.

Designated WH002, this airplane is the second of four in a dedicated flight test fleet and will test handling characteristics and other aspects of airplane performance. An array of equipment, sensors and monitoring devices throughout the cabin allows the onboard team to document and evaluate the airplane's response to test conditions in real time.

The 777X test plan lays out a comprehensive series of tests and conditions on the ground and in the air to demonstrate the safety and reliability of the design. Cathay Pacific extends B777-300(ER) leases, questions B777X

Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong Int'l) has extended the dry-leases of a number of B777-300(ER)s from BOC Aviation by ten years in March 2020 as it ponders whether to take ordered B777-9s once they are available, the Seattle Times has reported.

Citing an unnamed senior executive at a leasing firm, the report said that Cathay Pacific was in talks with another lessor concerning extending another ten leases of B777-300(ER) for a further ten years.

"Unofficially, Cathay is saying it won’t take the 777Xs," the source said.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Cathay Pacific currently operates fifty-one B777-300(ER)s, which are 8.1 years old on average. Thirty-one units are owned by the airline while the remainder is dry-leased from Nomura Babcock & Brown (nine units), BOC Aviation (four), Aviator Capital, Stratos (two each), Blackbird Capital, Doric Asset Finance, and ICBC Financial Leasing (one each). The airline has twenty-one B777-9s on firm order from Boeing.

The airline also operates seventeen owned B777-300s used on regional routes.

Cathay Pacific said it would not comment on speculation.

New Boeing 777X Completes Successful First Flight

Three hour, 51 minute flight marks new phase for rigorous test program

Largest and most fuel efficient twin-engine commercial jet expected to deliver in 2020

SEATTLE, Jan. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The new Boeing (NYSE: BA) 777X jetliner took to the skies today, entering the next phase of its rigorous test program. Based on the popular 777 and with proven technologies from the 787 Dreamliner, the 777X took off in front of thousands at Paine Field in Everett, Washington, at 10:09 a.m. local time for a three hour, 51 minute flight over Washington state before landing at Seattle's Boeing Field.

"The 777X flew beautifully, and today's testing was very productive," said Capt. Van Chaney, 777/777X chief pilot for Boeing Test & Evaluation. "Thank you to all the teams who made today possible. I can't wait to go fly your airplane again."

Capt. Chaney and Boeing Chief Pilot Craig Bomben worked through a detailed test plan to exercise the airplane's systems and structures while the test team in Seattle monitored the data in real time.

"Our Boeing team has taken the most successful twin-aisle jet of all time and made it even more efficient, more capable and more comfortable for all," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Today's safe first flight of the 777X is a tribute to the years of hard work and dedication from our teammates, our suppliers and our community partners in Washington state and across the globe."

The first of four dedicated 777-9 flight test airplanes, WH001 will now undergo checks before resuming testing in the coming days. The test fleet, which began ground testing in Everett last year, will endure a comprehensive series of tests and conditions on the ground and in the air over the coming months to demonstrate the safety and reliability of the design.

The newest member of Boeing's market-leading widebody family, the 777X will deliver 10 percent lower fuel use and emissions and 10 percent lower operating costs than the competition through advanced aerodynamics, the latest generation carbon-fiber composite wing and the most advanced commercial engine ever built, GE Aviation's GE9X.

The new 777X also combines the best of the passenger-preferred 777 and 787 Dreamliner cabins with new innovations to deliver the flight experience of the future. Passengers will enjoy a wide, spacious cabin, large overhead bins that close easily for convenient access to their belongings, larger windows for a view from every seat, better cabin altitude and humidity, less noise and a smoother ride.

Boeing expects to deliver the first 777X in 2021. The program has won 340 orders and commitments from leading carriers around the world, including ANA, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines. Since its launch in 2013, the 777X family has outsold the competition nearly 2 to 1.
