ExpressJet launches aha!

ExpressJet has announced its return to the skies, which it will do with a new leisure brand: aha! The name is short for air, hotel and adventure and the airline is set to launch on 24 October 2021 from its Reno-Tahoe (CA) base. Initially, the airline will fly to Bakersfield (CA), Eugene-Springfield (OR), Eureka-Arkata (CA), Fresno-Yosemite (CA), Medford-Ashland (OR), Ontario (CA), Pascoe-Tri Cities (WA) and Redmond-Bend (OR). We already reported on a possible restart of the airline in January.

The airline's fleet currently consists of a single ERJ145, N844HK (14500838), which has been previously used by the airline to operate for United Express and has been at Macon (GA) for maintenance since 1 July 2021.

ExpressJet outlines Q3 restart

Final approval has been given for the resumption of the regional airline's commercial operations.

US regional carrier ExpressJet plans to resume service before the end of September, the Atlanta-based airline has announced.

The move follows the US Transportation Department’s (DOT) decision to issue a final order that permits the carrier to restart flights—almost a year after the former United Airlines affiliate was forced to wind down operations.

As previously reported by Routes, the DOT issued a show cause order in July, proposing that ExpressJet is “fit, willing, and able to conduct interstate air transportation” as a US-certificated air carrier. That tentative decision has now been made final.

ExpressJet has been a scheduled airline for 33 years and has operated as Delta Connection and American Eagle, as well as United Express. However, after United consolidated Embraer ERJ-145 flying with CommutAir, the airline halted commercial operations in September 2020.

Following the final DOT approval, a statement issued by the carrier said it expects to unveil its detailed flying plans “in the coming weeks.”

The airline added it intends to provide service in “small and abandoned markets with unmet customer needs.” It will also avoid “needless overlap” with the major airlines and ULCCs.

“Resumption of service will allow ExpressJet to begin recalling and reinstating furloughed employees,” the airline said.

“A majority will be covered by collective bargaining agreements with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT).”

Before the COVID-19 crisis, ExpressJet conducted 3,300 weekly flights for United from bases in Chicago (ORD), Cleveland (CLE), Houston (IAH), Knoxville (TYS) and Newark (EWR). The airline, majority owned by ManaAir, employed 2,800 staff and served more than 100 airports across North America.

United Airlines to drop either ExpressJet or CommutAir

United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) has told two of its regional capacity providers, ExpressJet Airlines (EV, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) and CommutAir (C5, Cleveland Hopkins), that it will end its capacity purchase agreement with one of them going forward, Reuters has reported citing union letters.

United Airlines holds minority stakes in both airlines (directly in CommutAir and through ManaAir, a joint venture with KAir Enterprises, in ExpressJet), which, in turn, operate exclusively on behalf of United under the United Express brand. As such, the loss of the CPA with United could herald major problems for the carrier in question.

United admitted that as a result of COVID-19, it has had to cut its schedules and costs across the board and anticipates the pandemic will continue to impact its relationships with its regional partners.

CommutAir and ExpressJet cover the same market segment as they both operate E145 regional jets on behalf of United Airlines. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, CommutAir currently operates thirty-eight EMB-145XRs, while ExpressJet Airlines operates fifty EMB-145LRs, fifty-eight XRs, as well as thirteen ERJ 170-200LLs.

According to the union letter, United pointed out that ExpressJet Airlines' costs are currently higher than CommutAir's.

Besides the two E145 specialists, United Express flights are also operated by Air Wisconsin, GoJet Airlines, Mesa Airlines, Republic Airways, and SkyWest Airlines (United States of America). However, none of the other capacity providers operates E145s and none is part-owned by United Airlines.

ExpressJet opens LaGuardia crew base

ExpressJet Airlines (EV, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) has announced that as of May 1, 2017, it has reestablished a crew base at New York La Guardia. The carrier said in a statement issued via social media the New York hub will cater to its Bombardier CRJ fleet operations.

According to the ch-aviation route database, ExpressJet's LaGuardia operations cater exclusively to Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson).

As it stands, the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson-based capacity supply specialist also operates crew bases at Newark, Houston Intc'l, Chicago O'Hare, Cleveland Hopkins, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Detroit Metropolitan.
