Emirates celebrates the 40th anniversary of the founding of the United Arab Emirates with a special A380 logo

Emirates Airline (Dubai) is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the formation of the United Arab Emirates by carrying a special anniversary logo, emblazoned on its Airbus A380 aircraft.

The UAE is a federation of seven emirates (equivalent to principalities), each governed by a hereditary emir, with a single national president. The constituent emirates are Abu Dhabi, Ajman,Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. The capital is Abu Dhabi, which is also the state’s center of political, industrial and cultural activities.

Prior to independence in 1971 from Britain, the UAE was known as the Trucial States or Trucial Oman, in reference to a 19th-century truce between the local sheikhs, hereditary rulers of the territories and the United Kingdom. The term Pirate Coast was also used by some to refer to the emirates from the 18th to the early 20th century, owing to the preponderance of pirates operating from emirati ports.

Boeing, Lion Air Announce Historic Commitment for up to 380 737s

Airline to order 201 737 MAXs and 29 Next-Generation 737-900ERs worth $21.7 billion

- When finalized, order will be the largest ever for Boeing

- Deal to include purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes

BALI, Indonesia, Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Jakarta-based Lion Air today announced a commitment for the airline to order 201 737 MAXs and 29 Next-Generation 737-900 ERs (extended range). The agreement also includes purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes.

"The 737 MAX will be the future of Lion Air," said Rusdi Kirana, Lion Air Founder and President Director. "The highly efficient, technologically advanced airplane will help Lion Air continue to bring low fares and allow us to open new destinations because of the longer range of the airplane."

With 230 airplanes at a list price of $21.7 billion, this deal when finalized will be the largest commercial airplane order ever in Boeing's history by both dollar volume and total number of airplanes. Boeing and Lion Air are working to finalize details of the agreement, at which time it will be a firm order posted on the Boeing Orders and Deliveries website. Lion Air will also acquire purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes valued at more than $14 billion if exercised at list prices.

U.S. President Barack Obama witnessed the announcement at a ceremony today at the East Asia Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

"We're proud that Lion Air picked the 737 once again, building on our successful partnership," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh. "Lion Air was a leader when it was the launch customer for the 737-900ER in 2005 and today it continues to be a leader as the first airline in Asia to commit to the 737 MAX."

The 737 MAX is a new engine variant of the world's best selling airplane and builds on the strengths of today's Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP 1-B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and appeal.

Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 10-12 percent fuel burn improvement over today's most fuel efficient single-aisle airplanes and a 7 percent operating cost advantage over tomorrow's competition.

"Our customers tell us they want more efficient airplanes," said Ray Conner, senior vice president of Sales and Customer Support, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 737 MAX will deliver fuel savings better than any competing single-aisle airplane on the market."

To date, the 737 MAX has commitments for more than 700 airplanes, while the Next-Generation 737 family has won orders for more than 6,000 airplanes and Boeing has delivered more than 3,800.

Lion Air, Indonesia's largest private airline, currently operates or has on order a total of 178 Next-Generation 737s.

Hawaiian Airlines signs firm order for five more A330s

Growth of Airbus widebody fleet points to success with new type

17 November 2011
Honolulu-based Hawaiian Airlines has grown its order for Airbus A330-200s – today signing for an additional five aircraft. Hawaiian became a new Airbus operator just last year and now has a commitment of 22 A330 aircraft – including four that are leased. The airline currently operates five A330-200s.
Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s president and CEO, said, “Adding these additional A330-200s to our fleet over the next four years will support the continued expansion of our network and replacement of our current 767-300s. Our guests have responded enthusiastically to the cabin comfort and amenities of the A330-200, which, together with the superior service of our front line employees, offer the best airline experience for travelers to Hawaii.”
"This has been our best week of the year in terms of sales, outside the Paris Airshow and it is very gratifying that Hawaiian tops it off with an order for five new A330 wide-bodies to fulfil their ambitious growth plans, "said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “Just a year-and-a-half ago, I said I hoped that Hawaiian‘s passengers and employees would come to love this aircraft, and that hope has proven to be a reality.”
Hawaiian’s new A330s, like their existing A330 fleet, will seat 294 passengers in a comfortable, two-class configuration and have a range of more than 6,000 nautical miles. The A330-200 has excellent operational flexibility, serving a wide range of route structures, and provides operators with very low operating costs per seat. Its proven record of efficiency and superior passenger comfort provides airlines with a significant competitive advantage in today’s market. As of the end of October, there were 433 A330-200s in operation worldwide, with a backlog of firm orders of 131.

Volaris signs MOU for 44 A320 Family aircraft, including 30A320neo

Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 44 eco-efficient Airbus A320 aircraft, comprising of 30 A320neo and 14 A320 Family aircraft. The order makes Volaris the first airline to order the A320neo in Mexico. Engine selection will be announced by the airline at a later date.
Since starting operations in 2006, Volaris has become one of the top three airlines in Mexico having quickly expanded their network throughout the country and into the United States. The new 44 A320 Family aircraft are expected to help Volaris continue their expansion and renew their fleet. The airline currently operates 33 Airbus aircraft and has a backlog of 15 more.
“Fuel efficiency and reliability are critical to keeping Volaris among the top low-cost carriers in Mexico,” said Enrique Beltranena, CEO of Volaris. “These new A320s will allow us to maintain the youngest fleet in the country, while further improving our environmental performance.”

“We are very proud to see Volaris, an all Airbus operator, grow into one of the leading airlines of Mexico,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “Volaris will now be among the first customers in Latin America to benefit from the A320neo’s increased capabilities, including a 15 percent reduction in fuel burn and emissions.”
Over 8,100 A320 Family aircraft have been ordered and nearly 5,000 delivered to some 340 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.
The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family entering into service from 2015 and incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings. The reduction in fuel burn is equivalent to 1.4 million litres of fuel - the consumption of 1,000 mid size cars, saving 3,600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year. The A320neo NOx emissions are 50% below CAEP/6, whilst also having a much smaller noise footprint.

Qatar Airways selects 50 Airbus A320neo and 5 additional A380s

The State of Qatar’s national airline, Qatar Airways, has selected the A320neo as the reference aircraft for expanding its short to medium haul fleet and has increased its order for the A380. The agreement signed at the 2011 Dubai Airshow, is a firm contract for 50 A320neo aircraft and five additional A380s.
The A320neo is an option for the A320 Family and incorporates new engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings, representing some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year.
“The A320neo promises to be a great aircraft which is why we have chosen it to form the backbone of our future single aisle expansion. Together with our increase in A380s and our orders for A350 XWB, we are continuing investing in an integrated Family of the world’s most modern and fuel efficient aircraft,” said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways CEO.
“Qatar Airways supported the development of the Airbus A320neo very early on. It is with great pride that we are announcing this large order today including an additional five A380s,” said John Leahy Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We appreciate having built a unique relationship with our friends at Qatar Airways over the years.”
Qatar Airways has ordered a total of 43 A320 Family aircraft directly from Airbus and, including leased aircraft has 38 in its fleet. The last four of the A320s on order will be provisioned for “Sharklets” following a recently signed agreement. Qatar Airways’ total A380 order increases to 10 aircraft following its initial order for two made in 2003, which was later raised to five in 2007. Qatar Airways’ current in-service fleet also includes the region’s largest number of A330s (29).
The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. The A320neo reduces fuel burn by 15%, which is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel – the consumption of 1000 mid size cars. This saves 3600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year, the amount of CO2 absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint. Sales of the neo have reached over 1,200 orders and commitments in under a year, making it the fastest selling aircraft ever.
Typically seating 525 passengers in a three class layout, the A380 is capable of flying 8,300 nautical miles / 15,300 kilometres non-stop, enabling direct service from Qatar to New York. As of today total firm orders for the aircraft stand at over 240 from 18 customers worldwide.

The new aircraft will be used on Spirit’s targeted growth markets in the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America. The A320neo will help build on the great economic success the airline has already enjoyed with their existing all-Airbus fleet of 35 A320 Family aircraft
“We are excited to expand our partnership with Airbus and grow our fleet into the next decade,” said Ben Baldanza, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines. “Spirit Airlines’ low fares require an efficient, reliable aircraft and the A320 Family, including the neo, fits that model well.”
“The A320 and A320neo continue to set the pace,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “The unrivalled economics of these aircraft convinced Spirit to go all-Airbus and that decision has clearly paid off since for the airline.”
This saves 3600 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft per year, the amount of CO2 absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint.

Russia’s NordStar Airlines adds up to 7 ATR 42-600s to its fleet

The carrier, which ordered 2 firm ATR 42-600s and 2 options earlier this year, places an additional order for 3 firm ATR 42-600s

The European turboprop manufacturer ATR and Russia’s NordStar Airlines today announced they have agreed the purchase of up to 7 ATR 42-600s (5 firm aircraft and 2 options). The total value of all these airplanes is estimated at some US$ 132 million.

ATR and NordStar had previously unveiled in September 2011 an order for 2 firm ATR 42-600s plus 2 options, which has now been increased with the 3 additional firm aircraft. This follows an order in 2010 for 4 firm 42-500s plus 3 options.

NordStar Airlines will become the very first operator of new ATR ‘-600 series’ aircraft in the Russian Federation. NordStar already operates 4 ATR 42-500. With the introduction of the 5 firm ATR 42-600s, NordStar will bring to 9 aircraft its brand new fleet of ATRs.

Commenting on the signature of the contract, Kirrill Buryy, General Director of NordStar Airlines, declared: “We have been operating 4 new ATR 42-500s since May 2011 and the aircraft have fully met our expectations in the difficult operating environment of Krasnoyarsk Region and Russia’s Far North. They have become very popular among our passengers. With the arrival of the new ATR 42-600s, we will further expand our travel offer, with new routes and additional frequencies within the Krasnoyarsk region. The new ATR -600s ‘Armonia’ cabin will also provide our passengers with even higher standards of comfort, including new slim seats, additional legroom and larger overhead bins”.
Filippo Bagnato, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, underlined “the renewal of the confidence of NordStar, one of the fastest growing airlines in Russia, after only a few months operating ATRs. We are pleased to introduce the new ATR -600s in Russia, which is a very dynamic market with a huge potential for the expansion of regional aviation with the most modern turboprops”.
The 3 additional firm orders of NordStar bring to 148 the total firm sales of ATR since the beginning of the year, further consolidating its commercial yearly record. ATR has also booked options for 72 aircraft since January 1st 2011.

"As we accelerate efforts to boost our global cargo network, we are expanding our fleet with airplanes like the Boeing 777 Freighter that allow us to deliver cargo further and more efficiently than ever before," said Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways. "The 777 Freighter has already proven itself with its impressive operating economics and is a critical component of our cargo fleet, enabling the launch of three new dedicated freighter services to Atlanta, Houston and Toronto, from our hubs in Doha and Luxembourg."

Qatar Airways currently operates 28 Boeing 777s of various types, including 16 777-300ERs (extended range), three 777 Freighters and nine 777-200LRs. It recently took delivery of its 100th airplane which was a Boeing 777-200LR (longer range). By 2013, the airline plans to serve more than 120 destinations worldwide with a fleet of over 120 aircraft. The airline currently has a fleet of 100 aircraft flying to over 100 destinations.

"Qatar Airways' decision to invest in expanding its 777 Freighter fleet is an important endorsement for the aircraft from one of the world's fastest growing airlines," said Marty Bentrott, vice president, Sales – Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Qatar Airways' expansion strategy is clearly built on the principle of delivering cargo efficiently from one point to another and its choice of the 777 Freighter, with its unparalleled capabilities, reflects that."

With high-cargo density and 10-foot (3.1-meter) interior height capability that complements the popular 747 freighter family, the 777 freighter can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload of 225,200 pounds (102 metric tons). The 777 freighter is powered by General Electric's GE90-110B1L and meets QC2 noise standards.

Boeing is the air cargo industry leader, using its expertise to support customers in their success and to promote the industry. The company also offers the most complete family of freighters, which provide superior efficiency and operational economics in support of airline profitability.

The 777 Freighter is the world's longest-range, twin-engine freighter and features the lowest trip cost of any large cargo aircraft. The airplane is based on the Boeing 777-200LR (Long Range), which Qatar Airways operates on ultra long-haul passenger routes to Houston, Melbourne, Montreal, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires.

Aviation Capital Group signs firm order for 30 A320neo

Aviation Capital Group (ACG), the United States based global aircraft leasing company, signed a purchase agreement with Airbus for 30 eco-efficient A320neo Family aircraft today at the 2011 Dubai Airshow.
This latest order from ACG for 30 A320neo’s brings the lessor’s total A320 Family order book to 98 aircraft. Engine selection on ACG’s A320neo fleet will be made at a later date.
“Faced with increasing fuel prices and tough competition, we are seeing a stronger than ever demand from our customers for modern fuel-efficient aircraft such as the A320neo,” said Stephen Hannahs, CEO and Group Managing Director, Aviation Capital Group. “With the neo, we are able to offer our customers a tool which cuts fuel burn by 15%. There’s no doubt that this aircraft will be snapped up by operators worldwide.”
“We may have taken more time that other Leasing Companies to make the neo selection, but we wanted to test customer reaction, financial community acceptance and the fit within the ACG long term fleet plan – it passed with flying colors on all counts,”said John Feren, EVP Global Marketing, Aviation Capital Group.
“It’s great to see ACG becoming the latest leasing company to order our new, fuel efficient A320neo,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer Customers. “This is a clear signal from the market that the A320neo is a great long term investment and will be the backbone of lessors’ portfolios for the years to come.”
Over 8,100 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,800 delivered to more than 340 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality with the current A320, making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.
The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family entering into service from 2015 and incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings. This reduction in fuel burn is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel – the consumption of 1,000 mid size cars. This saves 3,600 metric tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year, the amount absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo NOx emissions are 50% below CAEP/6 and this aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint.
