Royal Air Maroc mulls placing order for "12-15" 100-seater jets

Royal Air Maroc  says it will tender for between 12 and 15 new 100-seater aircraft should trials with two EMB-190s, currently on wet-lease from Dutch ACMI specialist Denim Air ACMI , prove to be successful. Among the contenders mentioned are the Bombardier  CS100, the EmbraerEMB-190 and surprisingly, the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft  SSJ 100-95. Studies undertaken by the company, with the assistance of specialized international firms, have recommended the introduction of 15 units of the 100-seater type for use in the medium term. According to airline CEO, Mr Driss Benhima, once the 8-12 month trials are complete, should a decision be taken to order aircraft of that size, the acquisition would be tendered for as part of the airline's attempts at better matching supply with demand while optimizing its operating costs. The Moroccan national carrier is also planning to acquire between "20 and 30 NextGen aircraft, including 15 medium-haul and 5 long-haul jets" as part of its long-haul fleet renewal plan.

Aviation Partners Boeing Signs 737-800 Split Scimitar Winglets Order with TUI Travel PLC

SEATTLE, July 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) announced it has formally received an order from TUI Travel PLC ("TUI Travel") for 737-800 Split Scimitar Winglets. This program is the culmination of a five year design effort using the latest computational fluid dynamic technology to redefine the aerodynamics of the Blended Winglet into an all new Split Scimitar Winglet. The unique feature of the Split Scimitar Winglet is that it uses the existing Blended Winglet structure, but adds new strengthened spars, aerodynamic scimitar tips, and a large ventral fin. This advanced technology winglet is the ultimate winglet in terms of performance, without increasing the existing wing span.

Earlier this year, APB launched the Split Scimitar Winglet program for the provisioned wing 737-800 (line number 778 and on) and 737-900ER with an order from United Airlines. FAA supplemental type certification for the Boeing 737-800 is targeted for October 2013 and EASA certification planned for December 2013. Certification flight testing of Split Scimitar Winglets is currently underway.

''TUI Travel is continually seeking ways to improve the efficiency of its aircraft and the Split Scimitar Winglets easily achieves this through the reduction in fuel burn and emissions,'' said Jane Ashton, Group Director of Sustainable Development at TUI Travel PLC. "We have adopted APB's products on all applicable aircraft types operated by our airlines and are happy with the results, hence when the opportunity presented itself to be European launch customer for the Split Scimitar Winglet we saw it as a natural step in continuing our efforts to become even more fuel and carbon efficient."

"TUI Travel is committed to being a leader in sustainability. As the first to commercially fly Blended Winglets on its Boeing Next Generation 737 fleet, this order confirms their firm commitment to saving fuel and lowering greenhouse gases," said Aviation Partners Boeing director of sales and marketing Troy Brekken. "We are very excited to partner with TUI Travel for the Split Scimitar Winglet program."

APB estimates Split Scimitar Winglet Systems installed on a Boeing 737-800 will save TUI Travel up to 200 metric tons (65,000 gallons) of jet fuel per aircraft, per year resulting in a corresponding carbon dioxide emissions reduction up to 630 metric tons per aircraft, per year. The fuel savings can enable a 737-800 to increase its payload up to 3,300 pounds or increase its range up to 60 nautical miles. APB also expects to certify an improvement in low speed performance that will generate take-off benefits at high/hot or obstacle limited runways.

APB will also certify 6 additional Boeing Next-Generation 737 configurations. These include: structurally provisioned (line number 1545 and on) and non-provisioned (pre-line number 1545) 737-700 and BBJ1, non-provisioned (pre-line number 778) 737-800, and structurally provisioned (line number 778 and on) 737-900.

Nearly 5,000 Blended Winglet Systems are now in service with over 200 airlines in more than 100 countries. APB estimates that Blended Winglets have saved airlines worldwide more than 3.8 billion gallons of jet fuel to-date.

First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Features New Boeing Livery

EVERETT, Wash., July 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] continues to make progress on the first 787-9 Dreamliner, which also has become the first 787 to don the new Boeing Commercial Airplanes livery. The airplane has just rolled out of the paint hangar.

This refreshed look for the Boeing family began with the 747-8 and evolved with the 737 MAX. The new livery retains many of the features of the original 787-8 livery, adding a prominent number on the tail to help distinguish among models within the same product family.

The 787-9 will complement and extend the 787 family, offering airlines the ability to grow routes opened with the 787-8. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters), the 787-9 will carry 40 more passengers an additional 300 nautical miles (555 kilometers), with 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than similarly sized airplanes. The 787-9 leverages the visionary design of the 787-8, offering the features passengers prefer such as large, dimmable windows, large stow bins, modern LED lighting, higher humidity, a lower cabin altitude, cleaner air and a smoother ride.

Boeing is on track to roll out and fly the 787-9, currently in final production, in late summer. First delivery to launch customer Air New Zealand is set for mid-2014.

UIA expanded its fleet with new modern Boeing 737-900 aircraft

July 26, 2013, Ukraine International Airlines expanded its fleet with new Boeing 737-900 aircraft produced at Boeing production facilities in Seattle in 2013. The aircraft passed an official registration procedure in Ukraine and received UR-PSI registration number.

The new aircraft is one of the three modern Boeing 737-900 aircraft that UIA receives in June 2013 as part of fleet expansion and renewal program. The carrier also plans to receive the fourth Boeing 737-900 aircraft by the end of 2013.

The new aircraft is capable of carrying up to 20 business class passengers and 159 economy class passengers in a two-class layout and is certified for up to 189 passengers in a one-class layout.

The 737-900 aircraft has substantial operation advantages over medium-haul competing models including increased range with maximum takeoff weight. It also provides more comfort for passengers due to enlarged seat pitch – amounting to 34 inches in business class and 32 inches in economy class – that is a substantial benefit on long-distance flights.

The aircraft`s ability to cover distances up to 6000 km with maximum takeoff weight allows the airline to maintain minimum rates and to offer passengers more tickets at low prices.

The new UIA aircraft is powered by modern navigation equipment and CFM56-7BE engines meeting the latest noise regulations. The engines` advanced reliability level and reduced fuel use allow increasing the aircraft operation efficiency as well as cutting emissions level.

“The new Boeing 737-900 aircraft arrival to Ukraine is a landmark event for UIA. Due to intensive route network expansion and significant increase in the number of daily operated flights, the issue of fleet renewal and expansion is currently particularly pointed for us, – noted Yuri Miroshnikov, UIA President. – We hope that the additional flight resource will enable UIA to meet several top-priority challenges: to improve flight regularity rates, to significantly increase UIA fleet passenger capacity and, consequently, to better meet passengers` demand for the most popular destinations. We hope our passengers will shortly experience positive changes”.

Malaysia’s MASwings takes delivery of its first ATR 72-600

Malaysia Airlines’ regional subsidiary MASwings today took delivery of its very first ATR 72-600 aircraft. The aircraft was delivered in a handover ceremony held at the ATR’s facilities in Toulouse and was witnessed by Datuk Ik Pahon, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism Sarawak and Chairman of BIMP EAGA - Sarawak Chapter. Malaysia Airlines and ATR inked a deal in late 2012 for the purchase of a total of 36 ATR 72-600s (20 firm orders plus 16 options) to be operated by the airline’s regional subsidiaries, MASwings and Firefly.

Based on the agreement between ATR and Malaysia Airlines, MASwings –which currently operates a fleet of 10 ATR 72-500s-, will introduce 9 ATR 72-600s until 2017, mostly for further expanding its total fleet. The arrival of the new ATR 72-600s, configured with 72 seats, will enable MASwings to increase frequencies and open new routes in its network across East Malaysia, as well as to new exciting destinations across Brunei – Indonesia - Malaysia - The Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) region, including Puerto Princessa in Palawan Island, Philippine, which is scheduled to start operation before year end. This new route will complete MASwings’ plan to link the other three countries in the BIMP-EAGA – Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines with Malaysia, making MASwings a truly community airline for the region.

MASwings business expansion journey does not end with Puerto Princessa. With its above 90% on time performance annually and carried 1.5 million passengers recorded last year, MASwings is confident with the new addition to its fleet, the targeted 2 million passengers this year would be an achievable mission.

These new ATR 72-600s will also enable the airline to provide passengers with even higher standards of service and comfort. The new ATR 72-600s of MASwings are equipped with a stylish and widest new cabin in the turboprop market, named ‘Armonia’, featuring thinner seats, new LED lightening and larger overhead bins by 10%, while providing passengers with additional legroom. The aircraft has the most advanced glass cockpit in the regional aircraft market, specifically developed for ATR by Thales, which includes the latest navigation and communication aid tools.

Commenting on the delivery of the aircraft, Datuk Captain Mohd Nawawi Awang, Chief Executive Officer of MASwings highlighted “the great popularity of the ATR 72s in Borneo, thanks to their ability to link a huge coverage of communities and to contribute to the development of tourism and business, aiming for greater service rendered to our passengers would be made possible as some declared the aircraft as - the best way to travel short distance” He added: “We are pleased to further expand MASwings with aircraft featuring outstanding operational capabilities, while burning up to 50% less fuel than regional jets. The development of the environment is a key point of our strategy of growth, and the ATRs have consolidated themselves as the greenest regional aircraft in the market”.

Filippo Bagnato, Chief Executive Officer of ATR declared: “The arrival of the ATR ‘-600s’ underlines a new step of a partnership which has proven fruitful since we signed our first agreement in late 2007. Since then, MASwings has strongly succeeded in expanding regional aviation across Borneo and strengthening both human and business links. We are pleased of being part of this story”.

MASwings currently operates 140 flights daily connecting the community in Borneo and beyond, while ATR has some 250 aircraft operating in Asia-Pacific in the liveries of more than 50 airlines. In recent years, ATRs have positioned themselves as the preferred regional aircraft for Asian carriers. Since 2005, ATR has booked orders for over 330 firm aircraft in Asia-Pacific, representing two third parts of the total sales of up-to-90-seat regional aircraft in the region.

Air Transat to lease four Boeing 737-800s, will retain the Airbus A330-200s

FPP - Lisboa

Transat A.T. Inc., the parent of Air Transat (Montreal) has announced the signing of an agreement with the U.S.-based International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) for the long-term (eight-year) lease of four Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This new type will be introduced in the summer of 2014 and will become the core of Air Transat’s permanent narrow-body fleet. The 737-800s will be used on sun-destination routes to Mexico, the Caribbean and Florida. The agreement also includes the renewal through 2020 and 2021 of the leases on six Airbus A330 aircraft—three A330-200s and A330-300s—with improved terms.

The three long-range A330-200s were originally to be phased out of the fleet. Transat and ILFC, however, reached an agreement that will enable Transat to achieve its objective of reducing costs, and that, in the case of these aircraft, will prove more advantageous than the seasonal subcontracting arrangement originally envisioned.

Frontier Airlines Adds Airbus A320 with Sharklets to Fleet

Frontier Airbus A320 with Sharklets

Frontier Airlines recently added its newest aircraft to its fleet, an Airbus A320 with sharklets.

The sharklets, which are eight foot tall wingtip devices, help save fuel and enhance the overall efficiency of the aircraft. The sharklets are expected to save up to four percent, or up to $400,000 per year in fuel burn by reducing drag while also lowering noise emissions and improving take-off performance.

In keeping with the Frontier brand that has a unique animal on each aircraft tail, the new aircraft introduces a new species to the Frontier fleet. “The new aircraft is Frontier’s first with sharklets, so naturally, a shark seemed like a perfect fit,” said Daniel Shurz, Frontier’s senior vice president, commercial. “The tiger shark joins our existing gang of land and marine animals from the destinations we serve.”

KLM Leases Six New Embraer 190 Aircraft from BOC Aviation

                                                                           FPP - AMS

KLM Cityhopper signed an operating lease agreement with BOC Aviation to lease six new Embraer 190 aircraft which BOC Aviation purchased from the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer.

KLM Cityhopper plans to add them to its fleet between November 2013 and April 2014. The order is part of the KLM Group’s ongoing programme to replace KLM Cityhopper’s fleet of Fokker 70 aircraft.

KLM Cityhopper, a 100% subsidiary of KLM, is the largest regional carrier in Europe. It performs about 100,000 flights each year with its fleet of Embraer 190 and Fokker 70 aircraft from Schiphol to forty-nine destinations in Europe. By replacing seven Fokkers with six new Embraers, the KLM Cityhopper fleet now consists of twenty-eight Embraer 190s and nineteen Fokker 70 aircraft. It gives KLM Cityhopper the largest fleet of Embraer 190s in Europe.

The Embraer 190 is more fuel-efficient, has lower carbon emissions, and the absence of the middle seat offers greater passenger comfort and more room for carry-on baggage. Moreover, the Embraer flies faster and offers greater capacity than the Fokker 70 in the markets in which KLM Cityhopper operates. The Embraer 190 offers seating for 100 passengers while the Fokker 70 seats 80. The influx of new Embraers will run concurrent with the phase-out of the Fokkers. Nevertheless, KLM will continue to invest in Fokker 70 aircraft and continue to fly them in its network for some years ahead

“This deal is a perfect example of the investments that KLM is making,” says KLM’s CEO Camiel Eurlings. “Not only do these investments make travel more comfortable, they also contribute to a more sustainable operation and greater efficiency, all of which will help us achieve our ambitious aims to reduce noise and carbon emissions.”

“It is a major endorsement for the E-Jets program to see KLM Cityhopper continuing its fleet modernization with additional E190s,” said Paulo Cesar Silva, President & CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Through its partnership with Air France, the combined group will operate more than 50 aircraft, the largest fleet of E-Jets in Europe. The participation of BOC Aviation was key in the success of this transaction and shows the role such an important lessor plays in the E-Jets program.”

“We are delighted to work with KLM, by helping its subsidiary KLM Cityhopper to support its modernization plan with the E190, a versatile and excellent aircraft,” said Robert Martin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BOC Aviation.

By investing in the new aircraft, KLM continues to strengthen its competitive position, both inside Europe and in the international market making use of European connections. It will also allow KLM to increase its capacity to a number of specific destinations.

Bombardier CSeries Aircraft First Flight to Take Place in the Coming Weeks

July 24, 2013 Montréal Aerospace, Press Release
CSeries aircraft’s geared turbofan engines running smoothly and powering key aircraft systems
More time needed to ensure mature systems integration for a productive flight test program

Bombardier Aerospace confirmed today that the integration of the CSeries aircraft’s auxiliary power unit and Pratt & Whitney PurePower Geared Turbofan™ PW1500G engines on the first flight test vehicle (FTV1) is running smoothly, allowing for testing of the aircraft’s key systems. It also confirmed that the latest software upgrades on the aircraft continue to be successfully completed. The CSeries aircraft’s overall integration is progressing well; however, the highly technical last steps are taking more time than initially anticipated to validate the overall systems and ongoing software integration. First flight is expected to occur in the coming weeks.

“Seeing the first CSeries aircraft power up on the tarmac was a thrilling event. We have now entered the ultimate phase of systems integration and validation on the first flight test vehicle as we submit brand new technology to in-depth tests,” said Mike Arcamone, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

“While the process has taken more time than we had expected, we are pleased with the results and are very comfortable taking more time to ensure the required integration is finalized and the CSeries aircraft is cleared for its first flight,” added Mr. Arcamone.

While in its final testing stage in preparation for first flight, FTV1 is undergoing important and complex pre-flight tests, including aircraft in the loop testing (ACIL). During ACIL tests, FTV1 is “flown" on the ground in a simulated flight environment to ensure the first aircraft behaves in the same manner as experienced with the on-the-ground Complete Integrated Aircraft Systems Test Area (CIASTA), also known as “Aircraft 0.” This will be followed by low- and high-speed taxiing.

Activities with Transport Canada to obtain the Flight Test Permit for FTV1 are progressing steadily and the permit is also expected in the coming weeks.

Boeing Completes 737 MAX 8 Firm Configuration

- Engineers begin detailed design

- Program on track for first delivery in third quarter 2017

RENTON, Wash., July 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) has completed the firm configuration of the 737 MAX 8. This milestone marks completion of the major trade studies that define the capabilities of the 737 MAX family.

"We have defined the design requirements for the 737 MAX that provide our customers with the most value in the single-aisle market," said Michael Teal, chief project engineer, 737 MAX, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We continue to follow our disciplined process to ensure that we have completed all the requirements for the development stage of the program and are ready to begin the detailed design phase."

As detailed designs are completed and released, production can begin. Final assembly of the 737 MAX 8 is scheduled to begin in 2015 with first delivery scheduled for the third quarter of 2017.

The 737 MAX will be 13 percent more fuel-efficient than today's most efficient single-aisle airplanes and 8 percent more fuel-efficient per seat than tomorrow's competition. The configuration includes new LEAP-1B engines from CFM International that are optimized for the 737 MAX, a redesigned tail cone and the Boeing designed Advanced Technology Winglet to reduce fuel use. Other changes incorporated include upgrades to the flight deck displays, an electronic bleed air system and fly-by-wire spoiler flight controls.

"The 737 MAX will not only be the most fuel-efficient airplane, it will maintain the 737's industry-leading reliability," said Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and program manager, 737 MAX program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We are working closely with our customers and industry partners to ensure that the airplane we deliver will perform as promised."

Additionally the MAX will take advantage of advancements in connectivity. "As we continue to improve connectivity on the 737 platform, the 737 MAX will offer customers the capability to use real-time data to make operational decisions around maintenance on the ground during flight," said Leverkuhn. "This will allow airlines to more efficiently manage their fleets. Enhanced connectivity also will benefit passengers as the demand for more wireless access to information and entertainment in flight continues to grow."

The 737 MAX family includes the 737 MAX 7, 737 MAX 8 and 737 MAX 9 and will serve the 100- to over 200-seat market. The 737 MAX will extend the Next-Generation 737 range advantage with the capability to fly more than 3,500 nautical miles (6,482 km), an increase of 400-540 nmi (741-1,000 km) over the Next-Generation 737. First delivery of the 737 MAX 9 is planned for 2018 followed by first delivery of the MAX 7 in 2019.

To date, the 737 MAX has accumulated orders for 1,495 airplanes.

Interjet receives its first SSJ100

On July 22nd 2013 Interjet received its first SSJ100, which arrived at the airline’s operational Headquarters in Toluca, Mexico. With this new aircraft, featuring Mexican registry XA-JLG, Interjet will strengthen its network to make the country more competitive in tourism and business.

The SSJ100 of Interjet was presented for the first time at the International Paris Airshow at Le Bourget, the largest exhibition for the global aviation industry.

The aircraft offers the highest standards of quality and comfort available in commercial aviation worldwide. Interjet chose a 93-seats (34’ pitch) configuration, in accordance with the airline’s high standards for passenger comfort. The exclusive interior features were designed by Pininfarina. Compared to other aircraft used to serve the domestic routes in Mexico, the SSJ100 offers wider seats.

“With this new aircraft passengers will take advantage of lower tickets cost deriving from the SSJ100 operational efficiency, which makes fares more competitive,” said Interjet CEO, Jose Luis Garza.

The SSJ100 is a regional jet which incorporates the most modern Western technology, also equipped with cameras and screens for on-board tv programs, as well as a toilet reserved for ladies.

Interjet plans to put the SSJ100 into service very soon, after performing a mandatory certificatio campaign, which requires 100 flight hours according to the Aeronautical Authorities of Mexico. Anyhow, the aircraft has already achieved all the authorizations required by European and U.S. authorities for commercial flights.

In the last two weeks, Interjet opened 10 domestic and international routes that depart from the Mexico City International Airport to Aguascalientes, Campeche, La Paz, Manzanillo, Mazatlan, Minatitlan, Reynosa, Torreon and Zacatecas, in Mexico and to Bogota, in Colombia.

The SSJ100 will complement Interjet current Airbus A320 fleet, focusing initially on domestic routes. But the airline plans to use the SSJ100 to add new destinations in Central America and the Caribbean.

With an order for 20 aircraft plus 10 options, Interjet is the first western customer to put into service the SSJ100. The second aircraft is to be delivered very soon.

Flight of Angels

Flight of Angels

Book your Victoria Falls Helicopter Flights directly through Shearwater, the owner of Zambezi Helicopter Company.
David Livingstone famously wrote on seeing the Victoria Falls for the first time in 1855 that “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. Little did he know that 150 years later he could have exactly that opportunity. Indisputably the best way to appreciate the true splendour of the Victoria Falls is to view them from the air.

Zambezi Helicopter Company (ZHC) is the largest private helicopter company in Zimbabwe and has been operating scenic tours over Victoria Falls for over fifteen years.

ZHC’s customised helicopters have specially designed ‘Bubble shaped’ windows perfect for panoramic viewing purposes which provide wonderful views and visibility from all seats…the ultimate photographic opportunity.

FLIGHT OF ANGELS – Approx. 13 minutes – US$ 140

After take-off from a hill above the Zambezi, the helicopter turns out towards the magnificent Victoria Falls and the “Smoke that thunders”. Our pilot will fly left- and right-hand circuits over The Falls giving unrivalled viewing, photographic, and filming opportunities and putting the full breadth and height of The Falls into glorious perspective with the surrounding environment. A short trip up the Zambezi River and back over the Zambezi National Park completes the Flight of Angels.

Excludes government fees of US$12pp

ZAMBEZI SPECTACULAR FLIGHT – approx. 25 minutes – US$ 265

This experience encompasses the traditional “Flight of Angels” then continues downstream for a thrilling flight over the Batoka Gorges. The gorges below The Falls differ dramatically from the stretch above as the entire Zambezi River flows over the 1,7km wide waterfalls then is compressed into a turbulent 40 metres as the gorges slice their way through precipitous granite walls producing spectacular rapids and eddies that are hidden to most visitors. After a more tranquil flight over the upper reaches of the river, the Zambezi Spectacular Flight finishes over the Zambezi National Park – home to many wildlife species and, whilst spotting all the species is not guaranteed, elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, crocodile and giraffe are regularly seen from the air during this stage of the flight.

Sólyom Hungarian Airways Faces Licence Setback

Proposed Hungarian start-up carrier Sólyom Hungarian Airways has hit a temporary setback in its ambitions to launch operations to destinations across Europe and the Middle East from Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport filling what its backers perceive as a void that still exists following the collapse of Malev Hungarian Airways in February 2012.

The new business, backed by Middle East and European investors and under the stewardship of József Vágó, a former director of the National Transport Authority, had hoped to bypass a long certification programme by acquiring the operating licence of existing company, Avicraft. However, the Hungarian national transport authority, Nemzeti Közlekedési Hatóság (NKH) has rejected its application to switch the activities of Avicraft from ultralight and glider operations to commercial air services, according to local reports, and instead requested the carrier to apply for a brand new licence.

Sólyom Hungarian Airways had intended to launch operations with a fleet of six aircraft during the second half of 2013 with ambitious plans to eventually grow to a fleet of 50 aircraft within four years, but it may now have to reschedule its development plans. The full-service carrier had suggested it would carry three million passengers during its first 12 months of operation, although airlines already serving the Hungarian capital have suggested it may find it difficult to compete in a market that has already back-filled much of the capacity lost after Malev’s closure.
