VIM Airlines receives another Boeing 777-300ER

The carrier now has two examples of this modification (VIM Airlines)

VIM Airlines continues to expand its widebody fleet. The Russian operator has reported taking delivery of a second Boeing 777-300ER long-range twin-aisle airliner with a twin-class cabin layout. The first revenue flight will be performed from the airline’s base airport Domodedovo.

Adding another 777 to its fleet will help the carrier cope with its intensive summer schedule this year.

According to open sources, the new airliner, VP-BSF, is 15 years old and was previously operated by Emirates Airlines.

VIM Airlines received its previous 777-300ER in early summer. The aircraft, which seats 428 passengers, was also previously in service with Emirates. The carrier also operates 11 smaller-capacity Boeing 777-200 widebodies. Future plans include adding more 777s to expand its fleet.

According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the VIM Airlines fleet also includes Airbus A319s, Boeing 737-500s and 757-200 (which are now being phased out), 767-300s, and A330-200. Thanks to the fleet expansion effort the airline’s passenger traffic grew by 38% in the first half of the year to 1.04 million, earning it 10th position among Russia’s largest operators.

Airbus cuts A380 production again

European aircraft maker Airbus has cut production of its slow-selling A380 superjumbo for the second time in a year.

Airbus has revealed that deliveries of the A380 will fall from 15 this year to 12 in 2018 and eight in 2019.

The aircraft maker said only a year ago it would cut the production rate from 27 in 2015 to just 12 a year in 2018. It has not had an order for the superjumbo for two years.

The announcement came as Airbus reported stable revenues of €28.7bn during the first six months of 2017, although adjusted earnings before interest and tax dropped 35 per cent to €1.1bn.

Airbus’ order intake in the first half of 2017 totalled €37.2bn, down from €39.1bn the same period last year.

Commercial aircraft revenues rose 3 per cent with deliveries of 306 aircraft, comprising 239 A320 family, 30 A350 XWBs, 31 A330s and six A380s.

In June, the group unveiled plans to upgrade the A380 as part of an effort to boost flagging sales. It said the new version would cut costs for airlines by 13 per cent per seat.

An Airbus study found aerodynamic improvements, in particular new, large winglets and other wing refinements, meant the A380plus would burn up to 4 per cent less fuel.

“It is a new step for our iconic aircraft to best serve worldwide fast-growing traffic and the evolving needs of the A380 customers,” said John Leahy, Airbus COO Customers.

“The A380 is well-proven as the solution to increasing congestion at large airports, and in offering a unique, passenger-preferred experience.”

First El Al 787 emerges in full colours

Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, the 787-9 (4X-EDA) has been named 'Ashdod', after the Israeli port city.

Flight Fleets Analyzer lists the aircraft as being taken from US lessor Air Lease.

El Al is intending to acquire 16 787s – a mix of -9s and the smaller -8 – in order to replace aircraft including its Boeing 747-400s and 767-300ERs.

It has also indicated that it holds options to take the 787-10, the largest member of the twinjet family.

Azimut Airlines mulling more SSJ100s

The airline has already received its first two of the type (Fyodor Borisov / Transport-Photo.com)

Russia’s new carrier Azimut Airlines, which placed a firm order for eight Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional airliners with State Transport Leasing Corporation (GTLK), might expand to 16 of the type.

At the ongoing MAKS 2017 exhibition, the carrier signed a letter of intent with Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), the Superjet manufacturer, for another four such airplanes. Deliveries are preliminarily scheduled to take place in 2021-22.

The airline hopes to have ironed out the technicalities and selected the leassor before the end of the year. A similar preliminary letter, for another four Superjets to be delivered by 2020, had been signed with GTLK earlier, as earlier reported by Russian Aviation Insider.

The eight firm deliveries are expected to be completed in 2018. Azimut Airlines has already received the first two airframes. These represent the SSJ100LR long-range version, and come in two different cabin configurations: the all-economy one seats 103 passengers, whereas the other converts from 100 seats in single class to a total of 93 in coach and economy, SCAC says.

To be initially based at Rostov International Airport, Azimut expects to launch operations in September 2017. Once Rostov’s new Platov airport, which is currently under construction, becomes operational, the airline plans to move there.

Scandinavia's Primera Air outlines TATL plans from 2Q18

Primera Air, the airline subsidiary of Scandinavia's Primera Travel Group, has announced it will open three new bases in Europe ahead of the launch of transatlantic flights early next year.

The firm said in a statement that from base facilities at each of London Stansted and Birmingham Int'l in the United Kingdom and Paris CDG in France, it would serve Newark and Boston in the United States beginning April 2018. Two more transatlantic routes will be announced by the end of the current summer 2017 season.
To facilitate the routes' launch, Primera Air announced earlier this year that it would take delivery of eight A321neo in 2018 including six standard variants, due in early 2018, and two Long Range variants due from AerCap during the final quarter of the year.
"We are very proud to announce our new bases and routes to the US," Andri M. Ingolfsson, President and Chairman of Primera Air, said. "With our brand new Airbus A321neo airplanes, we will operate routes traditionally served only by wide-body aircraft."
Flights to the US will operate year-round with Primera Air offering daily flights to New York and 4x weekly return flights to Boston from all three bases.
Primera Air operates across two AOCs - Primera Air Scandinavia (PF, Billund) in Denmark and Primera Air Nordic (6F, Riga) in Latvia. Collectively, they are used to run scheduled passenger flights from cities in Iceland, Sweden, Finland, and Norway to leisure destinations in Morocco, Iceland, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Malta, and Croatia.
Later this winter, they will also be used to offer charter flights from Reykjavik Keflavik, Iceland, to each Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic (four total services) as well as Varadero in Cuba (two services). According to check-in.dk, given their duration, the flights will operate with a technical stop in Halifax, Canada.

Jetlines plans summer 2018 launch

Start-up carrier Jetlines (Vancouver Int'l) plans to launch its ultra-low-cost offerings in summer 2018, reports the Financial Post.

"Canada still doesn't have a true ultra-low-cost carrier and it has some of the highest air fares in the world. The environment is perfect for this kind of opportunity," the airline's new CEO, Stan Gadek, told the news site.
It has not yet selected its hub city, but is currently considering Hamilton, ON and Kitchener.
Earlier this year, Jetlines enlisted InterVISTAS Consulting Inc to help draw up its start-up schedule for its first four B737s. It sees its greatest opportunity in the cross-border market with the US.
Elsewhere in the Canadian market, WestJet (WS, Calgary) has said that it plans to launch its own ultra-low-cost carrier later this year, but Gadek is unfazed by the competition.
"I do believe WestJet is going to try the ultra-low-cost carrier strategy, but I also believe they’re going to fail," he said. "They do not have the necessary cost for this to be successful, and they don’t have the culture in place to make it work."
Fleet-wise, Jetlines has signed a definitive purchase agreement with Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) to acquire up to twenty-one B737 MAX for delivery commencing in 2021.

Austrian Airlines Celebrates Two Million Embraer Passengers

Austrian Airlines integrated the first Embraer jet in its fleet in January 2016. In the meantime, 16 aircraft of this type are being deployed on European short- and medium-haul routes to more than 60 different airports. Austria's red-white-red flag carrier celebrated its surpassing the threshold of two million Embraer passengers on today's flight OS 335 from Vienna to Oslo. The passengers were given a specially designed luggage tag as a souvenir to commemorate this milestone flight. Austrian Airlines will have integrated a total of 17 Embraer jets in its fleet by the end of August 2017, thus gradually replacing its 21 Fokker aircraft.
The Embraer jets consume about 18 percent less fuel per aircraft seat than the Fokker, and are thus much more environmentally friendly. The fleet renewal program also enhances travel comfort: the cabin, which has a 2-2 seat configuration, is particularly spacious thanks to its ergonomic design and therefore offers passengers a feeling of enjoying more space. The Embraer jets have an average age of four years and have a seating capacity for 120 passengers. The list price of an Embraer jet is about US$52 million.

Air France Names Boost Airline 'Joon'

French Skyteam carrier Air France has christened its new lower-cost airline, which was previously known as the Boost project, as 'Joon' and named Jean-Michel Mathieu as CEO.

With pilot backing for the startup recently secured, Joon will launch this autumn, initially operating medium-haul flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, before branching out to long-haul routes in summer 2018.

The new airline will be led by Air France-KLM veteran Mathieu, who has spent most of his career with the group in network, revenue management, digital services and customer relations.

Joon is aimed at young working millennials, aged 18 to 35. "We started with our target customer segment, the millennials, to create this new brand that means something to them. Our brief was simple: to find a name to illustrate a positive state of mind," Air France VP-brand Caroline Fontaine said.

Air France said digital technology will play a large role for the new brand; however, the company added: "Joon will not be a low-cost airline, as it will offer original products and services that reflect those of Air France."
The underlying desire to funnel more passengers back to Air France is clear. "Joon is Air France's complementary younger sister, which will also inspire its customers to travel with its elder sibling," Air France said.
At strategic level, Air France is hoping to use Joon to fend off low-cost competition on short- and long-haul routes, as well to win market share back from its Gulf-carrier rivals.

"Joon is another step in the deployment of the Trust Together strategic project. Its creation will improve the profitability of the Air France Group, enabling it to reduce its costs and ensure the sustainability of its business model," Air France CEO Franck Terner said.

Air France said further details about Joon, including the airline's product, network and prices, will be revealed in September 2017.

LOT Completes Initial Phase of Long-haul Renewal

LOT Polish Airlines has taken delivery of the final aircraft of its batch of eight Boeing 787-8s, as the Polish national carrier eyes the arrival of the larger -9 model next year.
CEO Rafał Milczarski credits the twin-aisle aircraft as being a factor in the airline's financial turnaround.
The eighth 787-8 will largely be used to increase frequencies on LOT's Asian routes, notably to Tokyo (from 3X- to 4X-weekly) and Seoul (from 3X- to 5X-weekly). From August 2017, the enlarged fleet will also begin 5X-weekly services from Warsaw to New York Newark, replacing a Boeing 767-300 leased from Portuguese leasing and charter specialist EuroAtlantic Airways.
The final 787-8 will also allow for potential new long-haul services to be launched even before the arrival of a batch of four 787-9s from next year that will be used to inaugurate the recently announced Budapest-New York JFK and Chicago O' Hare routes from May.
The 787-9s will be the largest aircraft LOT has ever owned, with capacity for 294 passengers, including 24 in business class.
LOT's final two 787-8s were acquired under a financial leasing mechanism. Milczarski said this was more efficient financially than other methods and would allow the airline eventually to own the aircraft, saving "many million dollars over the next few years."
The CEO said the finance leases had been possible thanks to guarantees from the British foreign credits agency, UK Export Finance, and indicated that LOT was becoming "a player worth cooperating with."
LOT went through a difficult period in the early part of the decade that saw it receiving a bailout from the Polish government. In November 2012, it became the first European carrier to receive the 787 and Milczarski said the aircraft had made possible the intensive development of its Asian and North American services.

He said the 787 had become highly popular with passengers, while their greatly improved economy over the 767s they replaced had allowed LOT to offer lower fares, further attracting passengers.
On the short-haul front, July also saw the deliveries of four Boeing 737-800NG completed, while in November, LOT will be one of the early operators of the 737 MAX 8.

By 2020, LOT plans to double its passengers, number of flights, and fleet size compared to 2015, becoming the largest carrier in Central and Eastern Europe.

RwandAir hits visa snag on launch of Brussels flights

RwandAir (WB, Kigali) launched its Kigali - Brussels National flight aboard A330-300 9XR-WP on July 14, but has run into technical difficulties preventing it from operating the return servicee with revenue passengers. The flight is actually a modification of its London route, with a stop in Brussels on the outward sector, operating Kigali-Brussels-London Gatwick-Kigali, which poses a problem for African nationals transiting in the UK.

"We will only operate one leg as we are still handling some administrative procedures for the return leg," the airline announced on social media. "Official launch will be announced in due course."

Rwandan passengers are not able to transit through London on the return flight from Brussels without a United Kingdom Direct Airside Transit visa which comes at a cost of GBP34 (USD44.45), reports aviation website Luchtzak.be. Essentially, the aircraft will therefore not pick up passengers in Brussels for the return flight until the 'administrative procedures' are resolved.

EVA to retire Boeing 747s in August

Old long-haul jets being replaced by more fuel-efficient models

EVA Air’s last Boeing 747 aircraft will be retired in August.

The 372-seat, three-class aircraft is the largest passenger jet in EVA’s fleet, but these aging jets are gradually being replaced by newer, more fuel-efficient models.

EVA’s last remaining 747 will take off for the final time on 21 August 2017, on the route between Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport and Hong Kong, marking a major milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal process. These four-engined aircraft have been gradually removed from service in recent months and years, and replaced by EVA’s expanding fleet of twin-engined 777-300ERs and Airbus A330-300s.

The airline also has outstanding orders for 24 787 Dreamliner aircraft, including 20 787-10s – the largest version of the new fuel-efficient jet.
Several other Asian airlines have retired their 747s in recent years, including Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Japan Airlines. Boeing has produced a new, more fuel-efficient version of the 747, but it has not proven popular with passenger airlines.

Air Côte d’Ivoire receives its new A320 at a colourful ceremony in Toulouse

Air Côte d’Ivoire, the Ivory Coast’s flagship airline based in Abidjan, received its new A320 at a ceremony that was held at the Airbus Delivery Centre in Toulouse on Monday 17 July. This ceremony was jointly presided over by Didier Evrard, Airbus Executive Vice President Programmes and General Abdoulaye Coulibaly, Chairman of Air Côte d’Ivoire’s Board of Directors.

Air Côte d’Ivoire had already chosen the A320 family because of its exceptionally comfortable cabin, low operating costs and excellent fuel consumption performance. It already operates six Airbus aircraft (four A319s and two A320) in the framework of a leasing contract. Air Côte d’Ivoire operates 25 different domestic routes in West Africa and Central Africa.

The cabin of the aircraft being delivered today is configured in two classes (16 business class and 132 economy class seats). The business class offering provides an unbeatable level of comfort with the new “Celeste” seat provided by Stelia Aerospace, while the economy class provides a high level of service, particularly in terms of the lighting system and internet connectivity.

Air Côte d’Ivoire currently flies to 20 international destinations located in West and Central Africa, and to five domestic destinations.
