GTLK completes delivery of first Russian-built L-410 turboprops

Aeroservice is a potential new operators of airliners manufactured by UWCA

Russia’s State Transport Leasing Company (abbreviated to GTLK in Russian) has completed delivery of the initial batch of five L-410 turboprops produced indigenously by Ural Works of Civil Aviation to domestic operators.

Two of the airplanes went to Siberian Light Aviation (SiLA), the launch customer for the UWCA-made L-410s. Another two were delivered to Arkhangelsk United Air Squadron. The remaining aircraft was handed over to Khabarovsk Airlines, GTLK reports.

Russian lessor placed the order for five Let L-410s in 2016. The purchase was supported by Russian government in the form of incresing of the GTLK’s capital. Last year the government made the decision to provide similar support for the next five-strong batch of these aircraft.

A source in GTLK told Russian Aviation Insider that one of the airplanes in the next batch is intended for Magadan Region. Negotiations are also under way with several operators in Russia’s Far East, including Plastun-Avia in Primorye Territory, Aurora Airlines, and Aeroservice. The latter already operates several of the type manufactured by Aircraft Industries.

As of today, GTLK owns the largest L-410 fleet in Russia.

In late November last year, UWCA reported having assembled nine L-410s. The combined target for 2018 and 2019 stands at 29 airframes, and there are firm orders in place for all of these, the Yekaterinburg-based manufacturer states. CEO Vadim Badekha said in an interview to TASS newswire that the plan is to deliver 40 aircraft to operators by 2020.
The Czech-designed twin-engined, 19-seat L-410 Turbolet short-range turboprop has been operated in Russia for decades. The country’s fleet consists of aircraft made by the Czech OEM Aircraft Industries (formerly Let Kunovice). The manufacturer is since 2008 owned by Russia’s Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (UGMK).

Irkut assembles second MC-21-300 test aircraft

The second MC-21-300 prototype has been transferred from the final assembly shop to the flight test station (Irkut Corporation)

Construction of the second MC-21-300 flight test aircraft has been completed at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, a branch of Irkut Corporation, part of UAC. The aircraft is expected to embark on a flight test program in May, one year after the initial aircraft commenced its maiden flight on 28 May, 2017, according to Irkut sources.

The second MC-21-300 prototype was transferred from the final assembly shop to the flight test department on March 25, the findings from the first test aircraft having been taken into account in the production of the latest version.

“The completion of the second aircraft assembly is an important stage in the implementation of the MC-21 program. Sending the new machines for flight testing this year will achieve key milestones in the project: completion of the certification of the MC-21 in a timely manner; the launch of mass production; and presentation of the first airliners to the customer,” Denis Manturov the Russian Minister of Industry and Trade has advised.

In total, four MC-21-300 aircraft will be involved in flight tests. At present, the fuselage of the third MC-21-300 is being assembled at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, and the components and units of the fourth are being assembled. The production of aircraft parts and components intended for endurance testing is underway.

The initial MC-21-300 has its flight tests carried out at the Gromov Flight Research Institute airfield in Zhukovsky, near Moscow. Static testing takes place at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI).

Russia’s new generation MC-21 narrow-body was officially rolled out in June 2016, six years after the initial program was launched. Irkut is aiming to commence serial production of the MC-21, which will be initially powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1400G engines, in 2019.

Air Belgium expects to launch services in mid-April after securing its AOC

Air Belgium has secured its Air Operator Certificate (AOC), paving the way for its first commercial services. Announcing its approval by Belgium’s Direction générale Transport aérien (DGTA) on March 13, the Mont-Saint-Guibert-headquartered start-up said it hopes to launch revenue flights to Hong Kong by mid-April.

The certification comes just weeks after the airline took delivery of maiden aircraft. The former Finnair Airbus A340-313s, OO-ABA (c/n 835) and OO-ABB (c/n 844), were handed over on February 16 and are the first of an eventual four examples expected to join the Belgian carrier.

Separately, CEO Niky Terzakis said the relatively short 8,366ft (2,550m) runway at the airline’s Brussels/Charleroi base means outbound sectors will initially be payload-restricted. Terzakis told ch-aviation: “We will be operating temporarily at reduced lower deck cargo uplift Eastbound from Charleroi and essentially only on the longest route, Charleroi to Hong Kong.

“The prospect of an en-route fuel stop is [also] out of the question. We will not, however, have any limitations on passengers or cargo on westbound legs,” he said.

Terzakis added that operations will start with the aircraft configured in 257 seats but will eventually increase to 303. Cargo restrictions are also expected to be progressively lifted as outstanding environmental and infrastructural issues are addressed, including adding a 2,300ft-long (700m) runway extension.

Boeing Delivers World's First 787-10 Dreamliner to Singapore Airlines

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., March 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Singapore Airlines today celebrated the delivery of the first 787-10 airplane, the newest and largest member of the Dreamliner family and a jet that will set a new global standard for fuel efficiency.

About 3,000 people marked the milestone at Boeing's facility in North Charleston, South Carolina where the latest 787 model is manufactured.

Like the other 787 Dreamliners, the 787-10 is designed with strong, lightweight composites, the most advanced systems, and comfortable cabin features. The 787-10, though, features a longer fuselage which allows it to carry about 40 more passengers or a total of 330 seats in a standard two-class configuration.

With the additional capacity, the 787-10 provides airlines the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody airplane in service today.

"It is an honour for us to be the world's first airline to take delivery of this amazing aircraft," said Mr. Goh Choon Phong, chief executive officer of Singapore Airlines, the 787-10 launch customer. "The 787-10 is a magnificent piece of engineering and truly a work of art. It will be an important element in our overall growth strategy, enabling us to expand our network and strengthen our operations."

Goh added that "the 787-10 underscores Singapore Airlines' longstanding commitment to operate a modern fleet, and marks the start of a new chapter in our shared story with Boeing."

Singapore Airlines – through its subsidiary Scoot – already flies the 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners. With today's delivery the group will be the first to operate all three Dreamliner models. Singapore Airlines has 68 additional Boeing widebody jets on order, including 48 additional 787-10s, and 20 of the new 777-9s.

"This is a big day for all of us at Boeing and for our global supplier partners. We are thrilled to deliver the first 787-10 Dreamliner to Singapore Airlines, one of the world's leading carriers. And we are honored by Singapore's partnership and trust, as reflected by their repeated orders for the Dreamliner," said Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and chief executive officer. "The 787-10 will extend the Dreamliner effect that we are seeing across commercial aviation as the 787's superior passenger experience and unmatched fuel efficiency helps airlines open new routes and achieve significant fuel savings and emission reduction."

The 787-10's superior performance and high commonality with its Dreamliner siblings have attracted strong interest from around the world, including in Asia where the jet can connect all points within the region. The 787-10 also offers Asian operators the flexibility to fly to Europe, Africa and Oceania.

Singapore Airlines plans to puts its 787-10s into scheduled service in May, with flights from Singapore to Osaka, Japan and Perth, Australia. Prior to the introduction of these services, the aircraft will be operated on selected flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur for crew training purposes.

Strong demand for largest member of the best-selling A320 Family

Vietnam’s FLC Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for up to 24 A321neo aircraft for future operation by start-up carrier Bamboo Airways.

The agreements were signed in Paris today by Trinh Van Quyet, Chairman of FLC Group and Eric Schulz, Chief Commercial Officer, Airbus during the official visit to France of Nguyễn Phú Trọng, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Bamboo Airways is set to begin operations in 2019 with aircraft on lease from third party lessors before taking delivery of the aircraft covered by today’s MOU with Airbus. The carrier will focus on linking international markets to Vietnamese leisure destinations, as well as on selected domestic routes.

"After evaluating carefully the competing products, FLC Group and Bamboo Airways have selected the A321neo as the most efficient option for our new operation,” said Trinh Van Quyet. “The A321neo will enable us to combine comfort, efficiency and the right capacity for our planned services, which will primarily serve fast growing leisure markets in Vietnam.”

“We are proud that the A321neo has been selected by FLC Group,” said Schulz. “This decision once again underscores the position of the A321 as the aircraft of choice in the mid-market segment with its additional capacity and the very lowest operating cost. Vietnam is one of the most vibrant economies in South East Asia and we are proud to play a key role in helping to develop the air transport system in this fast-growing market.”

FLC Group is one of the largest conglomerates in Vietnam and is involved in a wide range of businesses including real estate development, hotel construction and management, financial services, and mining. Bamboo will in particular serve destinations where FLC Group has heavily invested in tourism infrastructure.

The A321 is the largest member of the A320 Family, seating up to 240 passengers, depending on cabin configuration. Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances, and cabin innovations, the A321neo offers a significant reduction in fuel consumption of 20 percent by 2020. It offers the longest range of any single-aisle aircraft and is capable of flying up to 4,000 nautical miles non-stop

Sections for first All Nippon Airways A380 arrive in Toulouse

Final assembly of first A380 for Japan set to start next month

The main sections of the first A380 for Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) have arrived at the Airbus final assembly line in Toulouse, France via a special convoy, with six subassemblies – the nose, central and aft fuselage sections, the tailplane, and the two wings.

ANA Holdings placed a firm order for three A380s in 2016, becoming the first customer for the superjumbo in Japan. The first delivery is scheduled early in 2019, and the A380 will initially be operated on the Tokyo-Honolulu route. ANA’s A380s will feature a special ‘Honu’ Hawaiian green sea turtle livery, symbolizing good luck and prosperity.

The A380 is the world’s largest, most spacious airliner that offers passengers the smoothest, quietest and most comfortable ride. With two full widebody decks, offering the widest seats, wide aisles and more floor space, the A380 has the unique capability to generate revenue, stimulate traffic and attract passengers, who can now specifically select the A380 when booking a flight via the iflyA380 website. Today, 222 A380s are operated by 13 airlines on 60 destinations, and 240 airports around the world can accommodate the A380.

VietJetAir scouts B737 dedicated freighter capacity

VietJetAir (VJ, Hanoi) is scouting for B737 freighters for its dedicated freight unit, Vice President (Cargo), Do Xuan Quang, has told Cargo Facts.

Speaking in an interview earlier this month, Do said the Vietnamese budget carrier was in talks with various lessors over a pair of B737-400(F)s, and is exploring both ACMI and dry-lease options. It is looking to deploy the aircraft into service during the second half of the year. They will be deployed on the trunk domestic route between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as well as to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Hong Kong Int'l, and Tokyo Narita.

VietJetAir is still keen on A330-200(F) capacity albeit only at a later stage. According to Do, VietJetAir's entry into the dedicated freight market is following a phased approach. The first phase entailed the use of bellyhold space while the second entails the induction of narrowbody freighters coupled with the possible signing of interline deals with other airlines. The third phase will see the addition of widebody freighters, he added, without specifying timelines.

QANTAS WELCOMES HOME ITS NEWEST DREAMLINER WITH INDIGENOUS LIVERY

Qantas’ newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which features a unique Indigenous livery, touched down in Alice Springs today.

The livery showcases the artwork of the late Northern Territory artist and senior Anmatyerre woman, Emily Kame Kngwarreye*. Based on her 1991 painting, Yam Dreaming, the design depicts the culturally significant yam plant, an important symbol in Emily’s Dreaming stories and a staple food source in her home region of Utopia, 230km north-east of Alice Springs.

Adapted by leading Indigenous owned design studio Balarinji, this special livery took a team of 60 people more than 10 days to complete.

The aircraft touched down in Alice Springs shortly after dawn following a 13,000km journey from Boeing’s Seattle facility and was warmly received by members of Emily’s family, who were joined by government officials and local community members.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said it was an honour to be in Alice Springs to receive the airline’s newest Dreamliner with Indigenous livery.

“It is a privilege to welcome home this special aircraft together with Emily’s family, close to her home Country. We’re thrilled to showcase her striking artwork on our newest Dreamliner.

“As the aircraft enters our international fleet, we believe this Dreamliner, through colour and image, will tell a story of our unique Australian landscape and, by sharing our Indigenous culture with the world, the

important story of reconciliation,” said Mr. Joyce.

Registered as VH-ZND, this aircraft carries the fifth design in the Qantas Flying Art Series which started more than 20 years ago and is the only one dedicated to international flights.

It will fly several domestic services for crew familiarisation before it enters service on international routes in late March.

The aircraft is the fourth Dreamliner to enter the Qantas fleet, following the arrival of Great Southern Land, Waltzing Matilda and Quokka.

*Emily Kame Kngwarreye (pron. Emily Karma Nung-war-ray).

FAST FACTS
The livery based on Emily’s Yam Dreaming artwork took:
A team of more than 60 graphic designers, engineers and painters at Boeing’s Seattle facility worked with Balarinji to install the design onto the aircraft, taking more than ten days to complete.
There are close to 5000 dots on the aircraft.
This aircraft will be the second in the Flying Art series currently in service alongside a B737-800, named Mendoowoorrji.
Qantas has worked with Indigenous owned design studio Balarinji for more than two decades on aircraft livery projects and other design work, including the Peter Morrissey uniform of 2003.
Yam Dreaming, 1991 is part of the Campbelltown City Council Permanent Collection and can be viewed at Campbelltown Arts Centre. The work was purchased in 1995 by Campbelltown City Council with assistance from the Australia Council.
Five Qantas aircraft have been painted in Indigenous designs, with Wunala Dreaming carried on two separate aircraft.
Qantas has a long-term commitment to reconciliation and the promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and economic development. Since the mid-1990s, Qantas has actively promoted the employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through unique customer experiences, including the Flying Art Series.
Qantas is committed to ethical and transparent sourcing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and is proud to be a supporter of the Indigenous Art Code.

Qatar Airways set to grow longhaul ops despite blockade

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) has announced that it will add sixteen new international destinations to its network in 2018 and 2019, defying the ongoing blockade of Qatar by some of the neighbouring Arab states.

"During the blockade, Qatar Airways continued its expansion; it continued its march ahead. We kept our country supplied and we became prouder as a nation. Today, we are more independent than we were nine months ago. We are very defiant, and Qatar Airways will keep on expanding and keep on raising the flag for my country all over the globe," CEO Akbar Al Baker said during the ongoing ITB Berlin trade fair on March 7.

Qatar Airways plans to add previously unannounced routes to Luxembourg, London Gatwick, Lisbon, Tallinn Lennart Meri, Malta, Cebu, Davao, Da Nang, Bodrum Milas, Antalya, and Malaga.

The list also included previously announced routes to Thessaloniki (from March 27), Hatay (from April 4), Cardiff (from May 1), and Mykonos (from May 30).

Qatar Airways will be the sole operator on all of these city pairs.
The carrier has also announced it will increase the frequency of its Malé route to 3x daily.

The Qatari carrier has faced operational difficulties since June 5, 2017, when Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Egypt, collectively severed diplomatic ties with Doha and closed their respective airspaces to Qatar-registered aircraft. This blockade subsequently forced Qatar Airways to cut some 20% of its capacity, in addition to re-routing a number of flights to avoid embargoed airspace.

Boeing Expands Pilot Development Program with Okay Airways

Boeing will oversee screening, selection and training of 100 Okay Airways pilot cadets over the next five years
Cadet training for YTO Airlines and Kunming Airlines underway

SHANGHAI, March 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) has expanded its commercial Pilot Development Program (PDP) with the addition of Okay Airways to its growing customer list. The airline joins recent customers Kunming Airlines and YTO Airlines. All three carriers are based in China.

Through the Pilot Development Program, Boeing works with a network of flight schools around the globe to provide airlines with comprehensive commercial training including screening PDP cadets, managing student performance and correction, and developing commercial pilot training courses and materials. The comprehensive program includes ab-initio—pilot training from zero-flight-hour experience through advanced flight training—and is designed to develop cadets into 737 type-rated first officers.

"This strategic cooperation deepens our relationship with Boeing, and allows us to lay a solid foundation for training and a steady stream of talent," said Dr. Li Zonglin, CEO of Okay Airways. "The Pilot Development Program offers pragmatic and effective training, with continuous improvement of training quality."

"Boeing's Pilot Development Program is just one way that our Boeing Global Services team is delivering solutions to meet the needs of customers, both in China and around the globe," said Keith Cooper, vice president of Training & Professional Services, Boeing Global Services. "The commercial aviation market is experiencing an unprecedented demand for pilots, and we anticipate this to continue for the next several years. We're committed to supporting the full lifecycle of an aircraft, and through our training business, we're helping to ensure that our airline customers have pilots available to fly them."

Atlas Air Worldwide acquires two ex-LATAM B777 freighters

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings has announced it has acquired two B777-Fs from LATAM Airlines Group for an undisclosed sum.

The US operator holding said in a statement the former LATAM Cargo Chile machines would be placed with its Southern Air (9S, Cincinnati Int'l) unit which would operate them for DHL Express. The first of the aircraft to enter service under the ACMI contract was previously operated on a CMI (crew, maintenance and insurance) basis for DHL Express by Southern Air. It is due in service this month with the second to follow in June.
“These 777 freighters enhance our position in this attractive aircraft type and are consistent with our strategy of growing the operations that we acquired as part of Southern Air,” Atlas Air Worldwide President and Chief Executive Officer William J. Flynn said.
Atlas Air is currently in discussions with a banking syndicate to finance the two 2012-vintage aircraft and expects to close the financing transaction during the second quarter of this year.

For its part, Southern Air currently operates five B777(F)s and five B737-400(F)s.

Boeing, Hawaiian Airlines Announce Purchase of 10 787 Dreamliners

Hawaiian switches to market-leading Dreamliner for its large airplane of the future
- 787's superior performance gives Hawaiian flexibility to increase capacity and expand service

SEATTLE, March 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Hawaiian Airlines announced today that the carrier has selected the market-leading 787 Dreamliner as its flagship airplane for medium to long-haul flights. As part of the selection, Hawaiian intends to purchase 10 787-9 jets valued at $2.82 billion at list prices. Hawaiian also has purchase rights for 10 additional 787s.
The Honolulu-based airline, which has steadily grown its award-winning service connecting the Hawaiian Islands with Asia and North America, had been conducting an extensive evaluation of its airplane requirements. In selecting the 787, Hawaiian will be able to take advantage of the Dreamliner family's superior fuel efficiency, range and passenger-pleasing features to enhance its operations and open new routes profitably. Boeing's competitive advantage was also enhanced by Boeing Global Services. Hawaiian will use a number of new aircraft transition support services from BGS, including Training and Initial Provisioning to ensure a successful and on-time entry into service.

The 787-9 can carry about 290 passengers on flights of about 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 km), while using 20 percent less fuel and emitting 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

"The Dreamliner's operational efficiency and superior guest experience make it the best aircraft for modernizing our fleet in 2021 and beyond," said Peter Ingram, president and chief executive officer of Hawaiian Airlines. "Its expanded seat capacity and extended range will allows us to expand within our current route network and offer new destinations in the Asia-Pacific region."

Boeing and Hawaiian Airlines will work toward finalizing this new airplane order and it will be reflected in the monthly update of Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website.

"Hawaiian Airlines has been on an impressive growth trajectory as they strategically expanded service to and from Asia and North America. We are thrilled they have chosen the 787 Dreamliner to power the next stage of their expansion," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO, Kevin McAllister. "The Dreamliner's advanced technology, unmatched fuel efficiency, and passenger-pleasing cabin will optimize Hawaiian's fleet for the future and provide their customers with a best in-class experience."

The 787 is the fastest selling twin-aisle airplane in Boeing history. Since entering service in 2011, the 787 family is flying more than 1,500 routes and has made possible more than 170 new nonstop routes around the world.

Safety First gets a digital upgrade

New app and website for Airbus’ premier publication on aviation safety

‘Safety First’ gets to the heart of the Airbus commitment to ensuring its products and the people who fly on them experience the highest levels of safety; more than just a slogan, it’s also the name of its magazine written for industry professionals and devoted to sharing information and lessons learned.

Low accident rates in the aviation industry are themselves no accident; to achieve them, information sharing in a spirit of openness and transparency is necessary – principles to which Airbus is dedicated. Airbus has been regularly communicating on safety topics since 1995 with a magazine initially called Hangar Flying, and subsequently named Safety First since 2005.

In an effort to ensure that both current and historical safety content is easily available in the ways that modern audiences want to access it, Safety First is now available via a new app for Android and Apple smartphone and tablet devices.

A multi-channel approach for Airbus safety information

Airbus is putting in place a full multi-channel approach toward safety information with an initial publishing frequency of every six weeks for the apps, and the launch of a dedicated Safety First website as well. The apps are now available and ready to download at the Google Play Store and Apple App Store; the website will be available by summer 2018.

Readers can also subscribe to receive email notifications when Safety First articles are published. Since many readers prefer PDF or paper copies, these versions of the Safety First magazine will continue to be published every January and July.
