Turkish Air Revives A380 Plan with Malaysia Jets Back on Agenda

By Deena Kamel, Bloomberg News

Turkish Airlines has revived its interest in the Airbus Group SE A380 superjumbo as it examines options for serving China, India and some European markets, the carrier's marketing chief said.

Ultra-large jetliners are likely to be required to serve East Asia in particular amid capacity limitations there, Chief Marketing Officer Ahmet Olmustur said in an interview in Dubai on Tuesday, adding that Boeing Co.'s 747-8 jumbo is also under consideration and that the company could even take both models.

Turkish Air, which last year walked away from a plan to lease a batch of A380s from Malaysian Airlines, is once again looking at offers from carriers including Malaysian to rent superjumbos, Olmustur said. Otherwise it would prefer to buy outright if Airbus offers a revamped "Neo" version of the aircraft, he said.

"We do have intentions for the A380 but the new generation is coming so we have to be sure which is cost effective," the executive said. The airline wouldn't want more than 10 of the planes and the 747's cargo-carrying ability might make it better suited to destinations such as Hong Kong, he said.

Turkish Air, as Turk Hava Yollari AO is known, plans to make a decision on the A380 before moving to Istanbul's new airport, the first phase of which is due to open in the first quarter of 2018.

CEO Skeptical

Temel Kotil, the carrier's chief executive officer, said in June that the superjumbo doesn't fit with a strategy of rapid fleet growth and high flight frequencies, and that he wouldn't be taking the surplus Malaysian planes. Gulf giants Emirates, Qatar Airways Ltd. and Etihad Airways PJSC, with which Turkish Air competes on inter-continental routes, all deploy the model.

The airline is meanwhile continuing discussions with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, its partner in holiday carrier SunExpress, which could lead to a number of code-share flights, Olmustur said. Lufthansa chief Carsten Spohr meets with Turkish Air every three or four months, he said.

SunExpress suffered a 15 percent drop in passenger travel from Germany in the first quarter amid concern about terrorist attacks in Turkey. Numbers should pick up in the current three months and into the third quarter, Olmustur said.

Turkish Air has cut Russian capacity by 15 percent after sales fell on Turkey's downing of a Sukhoi Su-24 fighter near the Syrian border in November. It still serves Russian 10 cities and sees reservations reviving, the executive said.

Vanilla Air Expands Fleet, Routes

Alain Charpentier - TLS - F-WWIY - By Jeremy Torr, ATW Daily News

Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA) low-cost subsidiary (LCC) Vanilla Air has taken delivery of the first of three new Airbus A320-200s from Singapore-based lessor BOC Aviation. The new aircraft, which are part of a region-wide expansion program, will add to its eight existing A320s. The Tokyo-based LCC said it intends to grow its fleet to 25 aircraft by 2020.

In 2013, ANA rebranded AirAsia Japan as Vanilla Air.
Vanilla Air's existing network covers domestic destinations such as Sapporo, Naha and Amami Oshima and also serves limited international destinations, including Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Following increases in Japanese passenger traffic and better financial results from its parent, the carrier said it will expand its domestic and international network with a focus on Asian routes from its base at Tokyo Narita International Airport.

It is also adding a new Kansai, Osaka-Taipei route to its schedule at the end of April, flagging a move to secondary and less-contested routes in the northeast Asia region.
Vanilla Air president Tomonori Ishii said the LCC plans to begin locally, but would expand overseas as it grows.

"We will fly to resort destinations, beginning with short-haul services, but will eventually expand to mid- and long-haul services," he said.

The company has also indicated it would look at flying outside its immediate region using one-stop flights to potential destinations such as Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam from 4Q 2016.
This could potentially open up network expansion to secondary destinations such as U.S.-administered Pacific islands of Guam and Saipan, plus Filipino destinations that attract high levels of tourism during the Japanese winter.

Air Canada ramps up Indian operations with second Delhi

Direct flights from Vancouver to follow recent launch of Toronto-Delhi service

Written by:Mark Elliott

Air Canada’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Less than six months after the launch of its inaugural flight from Toronto to Delhi, Air Canada has unveiled plans to introduce a second direct service to the Indian capital.

On 20 October 2016, the airline will launch three weekly flights between Vancouver and Delhi, using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This will mark the first time this route has been operated non-stop.

Flights will depart Vancouver every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 2140 and arrive in Delhi at 0120 two days later, having crossed the International Date Line. The return service will then leave the Indian capital every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 0630, arriving back in Vancouver at 0655 the same day.

Air Canada will deploy its 298-seat B787-9 Dreamliner on the route, which features 30 seats in business class, 21 in premium economy and 247 in economy class.

“Customer response to our Toronto-Delhi service has been extremely positive, and with this new seasonal Vancouver route we are strategically increasing our presence in the important Asia Pacific market in time for Diwali festival celebrations,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines. “Our non-stop Dreamliner flights from our Vancouver hub will also offer the shortest elapsed flying time from Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles to Delhi.”

India Gate in New Delhi

Craig Richmond, president & CEO at Vancouver International Airport, said that the local community has “requested this route for many years”.

“It will be a pleasure to celebrate its arrival during Diwali. I would like to thank our long-standing partner Air Canada for opening up this exciting new route and for supporting us in our vision to be a… connecting hub between Asia and the Americas,” he added.

The Vancouver-Delhi route forms part of Air Canada’s ongoing international expansion strategy. Last year, the national carrier launched new services from Vancouver to Osaka, from Toronto to Delhi, Amsterdam and Dubai, and from Montreal to Venice and Mexico City.

And this summer it plans to start flying from Vancouver to Brisbane and Dublin, from Toronto to Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Glasgow, London Gatwick and Seoul, and from Montreal to Casablanca and Lyon.

The agreement makes Air Côte D’Ivoire the first African airline to order the A320neo. The airline’s first purchase agreement directly with Airbus also makes Air Côte D’Ivoire a new customer.

Airbus delivers its first aircraft produced in the USA

JetBlue receives A321 from Airbus team in Mobile, Alabama

the first ever delivery of an aircraft from the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility took place today, April 25th, in Mobile, Alabama. The entire team of employees from the American assembly line gathered to present their very first completed product, an Airbus A321, to JetBlue. On hand for the occasion were executives from Airbus, JetBlue senior management, including President and CEO Robin Hayes, and a broad collection of dignitaries from the Gulf Coast region.

“I am immensely proud to be here to participate in this first delivery from Mobile,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers. “Going from breaking ground on this facility three years ago to handing over the first Alabama-produced A321 today is an amazing accomplishment. It’s a testament to how well executed this project was and how strong the teamwork has been here in Mobile and throughout Airbus. The Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility has brought together all the best aspects of our other assembly lines around the world, and it shows how Airbus people work hand in hand with our partners to deliver great aircraft to our customers.”

Airbus announced its commitment to build a single-aisle assembly line in Mobile, Alabama in 2012, and less than one year later, broke ground on the $600 million (U.S.) facility. The ceremonial inauguration of the plant came in September 2015. The aircraft delivered today, a JetBlue A321, successfully had its first flight on March 21st, 2016.

In addition to the JetBlue A321 delivered today, there are currently nine other A320 Family aircraft in production at the facility. Airbus anticipates delivering four aircraft per month from the Mobile plant by the end of 2017. The initial deliveries will all be A320 Family aircraft with the Current Engine Option (CEO), but will begin transitioning to New Engine Option (NEO) derivatives in late 2017.

In addition to hundreds of new Airbus jobs the project has brought to the local community, the Mobile area has seen many Airbus suppliers open new facilities in the region, providing even more employment and a parallel boost to the local economy. Airbus is proud to boast that 87 percent of its new employees are from the Gulf Coast region, with nearly one third being U.S. military veterans.

Demonstrating the adage “The Sun Never Sets on Airbus” – Airbus aircraft are now produced around the clock, 24 hours a day, at facilities in: Mobile, Alabama; Hamburg, Germany; Toulouse, France; and Tianjin, China.

French flag carrier was launch customer for 777-300ER, 777 Freighter

PARIS, April 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Air France marked a milestone today with the delivery of the airline's 70th 777.

The French flag carrier has played a pivotal role is the success of the 777 program and was the launch customer for both the 777-300ER in 2004 and the 777 Freighter in 2009. Air France took delivery of its first 777-200ER in March 1998.

"The 777 range has been one of the pillars of Air France's fleet growth," said Frédéric Gagey, CEO of Air France. "The Boeing 777 has gained a reputation for its reliability, economic performance and comfort, offering our passengers the highest standards."

Since the late 1950s when it took delivery of its first 707, Air France has operated nearly every commercial airplane Boeing has produced. Today, the 777 is the workhorse of the Paris-based carrier's long-haul fleet, with the airline serving more than 179 destinations in 80 countries last year.

Boeing KC-46 Program’s Second 767-2C Aircraft Completes First Flight

EVERETT, Wash., April 26, 2016 – With a successful first flight on April 25th, Boeing [NYSE: BA] has added the fourth and final flight test aircraft to the KC-46 Pegasus fleet, a 767-2C.

During the 1 hour, 40 minute flight, test pilots performed operational engine checks, flight controls and environmental systems checks and took the 767-2C to a maximum altitude of 39,000 feet prior to landing at Boeing Field, south of Seattle.

The 767-2C is a KC-46 without the aerial refueling system installed. This aircraft, known as EMD-3, will be used to conduct environmental control system testing, including hot day/cold day testing and smoke penetration testing.

As part of the contract awarded in 2011 to design and develop the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation tanker, Boeing has built four test aircraft – two are configured as 767-2Cs and two as KC-46 tankers. Eventually, both 767-2Cs will become KC-46 tankers.

EMD-1, the first 767-2C test aircraft, has completed more than 315 flight test hours since its first flight in December 2014. EMD-2, the program’s first KC-46 tanker, made its maiden flight in September 2015 and has completed more than 240 flight test hours, including refueling F-16, F/A-18 and AV-8B aircraft. It also has been refueled by a KC-10 tanker. EMD-4, the second tanker, first flew on March 2, 2016 and has completed 25 flight hours.

Boeing plans to build 179 KC-46 aircraft for the U.S. Air Force.

DEFUNCT: Air Bishkek suspends operations

Air Bishkek (KR, Bishkek) suspended operations in February following a period of financial difficulties an airline official has told Russia's Aviation Explorer news.

According to the report, the Kyrgyz carrier's last commercial flight was in February following which its sole aircraft, A320-200 EX-32002 (cn 386), was ferried to Zhytomyr, Ukraine for maintenance.

The official states that should the carrier fail to resume flights in May, having missed an April deadline, then all may be lost.

"If we do not fly in May, then, in my opinion, we will not fly at all. To return to the market during the low season we will require a completely different amount of money," they said.

The Kyrgyz Civil Aviation Authority says that in light of these developments, it will take Air Bishkek management to task before deciding on their next step.

Boeing, China Eastern Airlines Finalize Order for 15 787-9 Dreamliners

SHANGHAI, April 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and China Eastern Airlines today finalized an order for 15 787-9 Dreamliners. The order, valued at nearly $4 billion at current list prices, strengthens China Eastern's expanding long-haul fleet.

"We are very happy to introduce the new 787 Dreamliners into our long-haul fleet," said China Eastern Airlines Chairman Liu Shaoyong. "The addition of these next-generation, fuel-efficient airplanes will play a key role in supporting China Eastern's strategy for international expansion, and enable us to realize profits in point-to-point routes across the Pacific Ocean, and between China and Europe."

China Eastern plans to operate the new 787-9s on routes between China, North America and Europe, bolstering its competitiveness in the international long-haul market.

With growing air traffic demand, the carrier plans to increase frequencies on existing routes from Shanghai to Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Toronto, as well as their newly launched destination, Chicago. The routes are currently operated by the airline's flagship 777-300ER airplane.

"China Eastern has been a long-standing Boeing customer and we are honored that the passenger-preferred 787 Dreamliner will join their world-class fleet," said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president, Northeast Asia Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The combination of both the 777-300ER and 787-9 will provide the airline with market-leading economics as well as flexibility that will contribute significantly to their success operating long-haul flights to North America."

The 787 family has proven to be an unmatched market opener, with more than 100 new nonstop routes already in service or announced, as well as an effective tool to increase frequency profitably, often in conjunction with the 777.

For China Eastern, operating both the 777 and 787 will allow the airline to continue growing its international presence with more capacity and cargo payload on key existing frequencies, while also providing the flexibility for further expansion in high-growth markets.

The 787-9 complements and extends the super-efficient 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 can fly more passengers and more cargo farther yet with the same exceptional environmental performance — 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes they replace.

Headquartered in Shanghai, China Eastern Airlines is one of the three major airlines in mainland China. Flying a fleet of over 560 long-haul and short-haul airplanes with an average age of less than seven years, China Eastern serves nearly 100 million travelers annually and ranks the 7th largest carriers in the world in terms of passenger transportation volume.

More than 60 customers from six continents of the world have placed orders for more than 1,100 787s, making the 787 the fastest selling twin-aisle airplane in Boeing history. With this order, the 787 Dreamliner will have nearly 100 orders and commitments from Chinese customers.

Juneyao Airlines Net Profit Up 70% in Q1 2016

By Lena Ge, China Aviation Daily

Juneyao Airlines Wednesday night reported a net profit of 454.23 million yuan in the first quarter of 2016, up 70.42% over 266.54 million yuan in Q1 2015.

Operating revenue rose 30.43% to 2.55 billion in the first quarter of this year. Basic earnings per share stood at 0.4 yuan.

The Shanghai-based carrier credited "fleet expansion" and "robust growth of market demand" for the much improved performance.

Last week, Juneyao Airlines reported an annual net profit of 1.05 billion yuan, more than double its net income of 424.7 million yuan in 2014.

In 2015, the Shanghai-based carrier introduced 12 Airbus A320 family jets to its fleet, bringing its fleet size to 50 aircraft, comprising 38 A320s and 12 A321s. Its low-cost subsidiary 9 Air added two 737s.

In 2016, Juneyao Airlines will receive 15 new aircraft across its group during 2016. Nine of the jets will go to mainline Juneyao, while six will be for its low-cost subsidiary 9 Air. Neither will be retiring any aircraft during the year.
Sun d’Or International Airlines, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Israeli national carrier El Al, started twice-weekly (Thursdays and Sundays) flights between its Tel Aviv (TLV) base and Valencia (VLC) in Spain. The seasonal service, operated by the parent airline’s 737-800s, and which started on 14 April, is scheduled to be suspended on 20 October. There is no competition on this city pair. Last year the carrier launched new seasonal routes from Tel Aviv to Ljubljana in Slovenia, Naples in Italy and Nice in France.
aenna

Frontier Airlines commenced 35 US domestic routes between 14 and 15 April.

Of the 35 services only three will face no direct incumbent, namely services between Cleveland (CLE) and Portland (PDX), and the carrier’s new routes to St. Augustine (UST) in Florida from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Philadelphia (PHL). All city pairs will be operated by the carrier’s mixed A320 family fleet. The average weekly frequency of Frontier Airlines’ new services is 3.7 while the average sector length is 1,564 kilometres. Commenting on the launch of the carrier’s new routes from Cleveland, Fred Szabo, Interim Director, Cleveland Airport, said: “We are very pleased that Frontier Airlines has decided to grow again at Cleveland. Its expansion to 14 markets including seasonal services makes them the second largest airline at the airport in terms of non-stop markets.”
