Airbus’ “BLADE” laminar flow wing demonstrator makes first flight
Aiming to bring a 50% reduction of wing friction and up to five percent lower CO2 emission
First test aircraft in the world combining a transonic laminar wing profile with a standard aircraft internal primary structure
Airbus’ A340 laminar-flow “BLADE” test demonstrator aircraft (A340-300 MSN001) has made its successful maiden flight for the EU-sponsored Clean Sky “Blade” project. The aircraft, dubbed “Flight Lab”, took off from the Tarbes aerodrome in southern France at local time 11:00, and after a series of successful tests it landed at Airbus’ facilities in Toulouse Blagnac. The overall flight time was 3hrs/38mins.
The BLADE project – which stands for “Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe” – is tasked with assessing the feasibility of introducing the technology for commercial aviation. It aims to improve aviation’s ecological footprint, bringing with it a 50% reduction of wing friction and up to five percent lower CO2 emission. Airbus’ A340 Flight Lab is the first test aircraft in the world to combine a transonic laminar wing profile with a true internal primary structure.
On the outside the aircraft is fitted with two representative transonic laminar outer-wings, while inside the cabin a highly complex specialist flight-test-instrumentation (FTI) station has been installed. The extensive modifications to the A340-300 test-bed aircraft took place during the course of a 16-month working party in Tarbes, with the support of numerous industrial partners across Europe. Today’s first-flight marks the kick-off of the Blade flight-test campaign to explore the wing’s characteristics in flight.
“We began by opening the flight envelope to check that the aircraft was handling correctly,” explains Airbus Flight-Test Engineer, Philippe Seve, who was on board the flight. “We achieved our objective to fly at the design Mach number, at a reasonable altitude and check everything was fine. We also checked that the FTI was working as expected, to identify further fine-tuning for the next flights.”
In the run-up to the start of this flight-testing phase, a small team of 10 specially trained pilots, test engineers and flight test engineers had prepared for this milestone for several months, spending time in a simulator and familiarising themselves with the FTI systems to be installed on the Airbus flight-test aircraft. Moreover, on equipment installation side, a working party of 70 people performed the FTI installation inside the aircraft, while teams from Bremen, Germany and Broughton, UK worked externally on the outer wings, with a team from Stade Germany, installing a pod containing infrared cameras on the fin.
On the wings, there are hundreds of points to measure the waviness of the surface to help Airbus’ engineers ascertain its influence on the laminarity – which is the first time that Airbus has used such a testing method on an aircraft. Other ‘firsts’ are the use of infrared cameras inside the pod to measure wing temperature and the acoustic generator which measures the influence of acoustics on laminarity. In addition, there is also an innovative reflectometry system, which measures overall deformation in real-time during flight.
A key goal of Blade is to be able to measure the tolerances and imperfections which can be present and still sustain laminarity. To this end, Airbus will simulate every type of imperfection in a controlled manner, so that at the end of the campaign the tolerances for building a laminar wing will be fully known. The flight Lab will perform around 150 flight hours in the coming months.

Malaysia Airlines still keen on A330 despite B787 order
Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) is still in talks with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) about its widebody requirements despite last week's placement of an order with Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) for nine B787-9s.
Speaking to Bloomberg, airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Bellew said negotiations with the Europeans will continue this week with focus on the A330neo. If ordered, the aircraft would then be operated alongside the B787s as part of the carrier's fleet renewal plan.
Bellew added that Malaysia Airlines is, meanwhile, also scouting for up to twelve second-hand A330s to fulfill its immediate growth plans. The jets are required in the first half of next year and the rest in 2019 and will be used to replace existing B737-800-operated services on slot-constrained routes. Lessors with equipment currently in service with a "bankrupt European carrier" have reportedly courted his airline, he said.
Malaysia Airlines currently operates fifteen A330-300s with the first of six A350-900s due to deliver in November of this year.

Monarch considering return to longhaul ops
Monarch Airlines (ZB, London Luton) is considering shifting its focus to the longhaul market as part of a massive restructuring of the UK leisure carrier's operations.
According to Sky News, over the past several months, Monarch and KPMG have been looking at various options which include the sale or restructuring of its short-haul services through a joint venture or feeder deal with another airline.
Sources told the UK television channel that Monarch had wanted to wrap up a potential deal as early as possible. The carrier sees the longhaul niche as more profitable given emerging price wars in the regional European market.
For its part, Monarch ended widebody operations just over two years ago with the return of its last A330-200 taking place in May 2015. The move coincided with a shift in business plan following the airline's buy-out by Greybull Capital LLP in October 2014. At the time, the private equity investment firm announced Monarch would transition into a "premium budget-carrier" while ending all long-haul and charter flights. As it stands, Monarch's fleet currently consists of ten A320-200s, twenty-five A321-200s, and one B737-800 (being used as a crew trainer ahead of the delivery of its first B737 MAX 8s).
Earlier this year, anna.aero reported on speculative talks between Monarch and AirTanker (9L, Brize Norton) over the wet-lease of three A330-200s in 2018. Monarch would reportedly base the aircraft out of London Gatwick, Birmingham Int'l, and Manchester Int'l for use in developing longhaul flights. Neither party responded to ch-aviation's request for comment on the matter.

Airbus Reaches Milestone Number of Aircraft Flying in North America
The number of in-service Airbus commercial aircraft in North America reached a new high of 1,500 following the delivery of an A321 to American Airlines on Friday. The company delivered its first North American-operated aircraft to U.S.-based Eastern Airlines in 1977 and has gone on to tally more than 2,000 orders with 25 airline companies and lessors in the region.
A celebration was held at the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, AL, with delivery teams from American Airlines and Airbus marking the milestone.
Paul Oliver, Vice President-Customer Services for Airbus Americas, praised the teamwork of both Airbus and American citing their commitment to hard work in advancing the future of airline transportation. “This milestone showcases the continued growth of commercial aviation in North America – and our four decades of commitment to providing the right aircraft at the right time with benchmark customer support for our customers. We’re proud to recognize this milestone with our partners at American Airlines, and it’s gratifying for it to happen with an aircraft built in the U.S.”
American Airlines operates more Airbus passenger aircraft than any other airline in the world. Since the first delivery of 25 Airbus aircraft to American in 1988 and 1989, the relationship between both companies has grown, with American now flying 416 Airbus aircraft in their fleet, with another 122 on order.
Joe Maloy, Director of Fleet Acquisitions, Dispositions and Records for American Airlines was in Mobile to accept the aircraft. “As the world’s largest operator of Airbus aircraft, American Airlines is proud to accept the 1500th in-service Airbus aircraft in North America, and that the aircraft was built at the state-of-the-art manufacturing site in Mobile, Alabama. American greatly values our relationship with Airbus. Congratulations to Airbus for reaching this milestone!” he said.
The 1,500 in-service aircraft milestone exemplifies the growing need in North America for Airbus commercial aircraft. In its lifetime, Airbus has globally received 17,287 orders across its product line, with more than 10,000 delivered. Over the next 20 years, Airbus predicts that more than 5,900 new aircraft will be required in North America.

Boeing raises Dreamliner production amid improved demand
Boeing is to raise production of its 787 Dreamliner aircraft from 2019 as confidence in its order book begins to return.
The US manufacturing giant will raise production by 17 per cent to 14 planes per month, up from 12.
“That’s an important step for us and another signpost of the strength of the marketplace,” CEO Dennis Muilenburg told analysts at a Morgan Stanley conference.
The announcement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Malaysia Airlines and Boeing for 16 new aircraft including eight 787-9 Dreamliners, converted from the existing contract for Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, along with eight additional 737 MAX 8s.
