Boeing Delivers Its 2,000th Airplane to China
Delivery milestone reflects rapid growth in world's largest commercial aviation market
More than half of all commercial jetliners flying in China are made by Boeing
SEATTLE, Nov. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) today delivered its 2,000th airplane to a Chinese operator, a 737 MAX for Xiamen Airlines. The milestone and the pace at which it was reached reflect the accelerating growth in the world's largest commercial aviation market.
Boeing delivered its first 1,000 airplanes to Chinese airlines over four decades. The next 1,000 Boeing jets have now been delivered over the past five years. The rapid pace continues as one in four Boeing-made commercial jet goes to a Chinese operator, either through direct purchase or lease.
"We are deeply honored to have achieved this delivery milestone in close partnership with our great partners in China. Our long-standing industrial relationship in this market has been mutually beneficial, fueling significant growth in Boeing's business, the U.S. economy, and the Chinese aviation industry," said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales & Marketing of The Boeing Company. "We are grateful for the trust and confidence of great customers like Xiamen Airlines. Our teams are focused on supporting them by designing and delivering the best airplanes and services in the industry."
The new 737 MAX delivered today sports a special logo commemorating the milestone. It is the eighth MAX airplane to join fast-growing Xiamen Airlines, which operates the largest all-Boeing fleet in China with more than 200 jets. The carrier also uses Boeing Global Services to improve the efficiency of its network and operations. Xiamen is the first Chinese airline to use Optimized Maintenance Program, which leverages Boeing AnalytX to recommend customized airplane maintenance plans.
"We're pleased to be a part of this historic delivery for Boeing and China," said Che Shanglun, chairman of Xiamen Airlines. "In our 34-year history of operations, Xiamen Airlines has steadily grown, doubling our fleet size over the past five years and achieving profits for 31 years in a row. Throughout that time, Boeing has been a valued partner in our growth and expansion by providing safe and reliable airplanes."
Xiamen Airlines is one of Boeing's more than 30 commercial customers in China. In all, Boeing-made jets comprise more than half of the greater than 3,000 jetliners flying in the country.
China's commercial fleet is expected to more than double over the next 20 years. Boeing forecasts that China will need 7,690 new airplanes, valued at $1.2 trillion, by 2038. Boeing also forecasts China will experience strong growth in the commercial services market with demand growing $1.5 trillion over the next 20 years, accounting for 17 percent of world demand.
China also plays a major role in building the world's jetliners. The Chinese aerospace manufacturing industry supplies parts for every Boeing jet, including the 737 MAX, 777, and 787 Dreamliner. In December, Boeing and the Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) are set to deliver the first 737 MAX airplane from a completion and delivery center in Zhoushan, China. The facility will handle interior work and exterior painting of 737 MAXs for the Chinese market. Final assembly work will continue to be done at Boeing's factory in Renton, Wash.
Boeing activity in China is valued at more than $1 billion in economy activity in China. This includes procurement from Boeing's extensive supply base, joint venture revenues, operations, training, and research and development investment.

Norwegian UK to move Florida, California ops to main hubs
Norwegian (DY, Oslo Gardermoen) has announced it will replace its existing services from London Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale Int'l and Oakland with new routes to Miami Int'l and San Francisco, CA, respectively, as of March 29, 2019.
"The change in airport destination reflects customer demand and the increased cargo capabilities these airports offer Norwegian Cargo," the airline said.
Both routes are currently operated by Norwegian UK (DI, London Gatwick) using B787-9 equipment. During the Winter 2018/19 season, the airline flies to Fort Lauderdale 7x weekly and to Oakland 3x weekly. Flights to Miami and San Franciso are currently scheduled as 5x weekly each.
At present, Norwegian plans to continue to retain all other routes operating from/to Fort Lauderdale and Oakland as previously planned. From the Floridian airport, it will serve Barcelona El Prat, Copenhagen Kastrup, Oslo Gardermoen, Paris CDG and Stockholm Arlanda next summer, while from Oakland it will operate to the same five airports as well as Rome Fiumicino.
The carrier continues to also operate to Tampa Int'l and Orlando Int'l in Florida and Los Angeles Int'l in California, as well as to Austin Bergstrom Int'l, Boston, Chicago O'Hare, Denver Int'l, Las Vegas McCarran, New York JFK, and Seattle Tacoma Int'l elsewhere in the United States.

Canada's West Wind Aviation eyes expansion, more Saab 340s
West Wind Aviation (WEW, Saskatoon) is looking at a major network expansion on both existing and new, out-of-state routes. The Saskatoon StarPhoenix has reported that the airline is also mulling adding more Saab 340 turboprops.
The network expansion entails increasing the frequency of the carrier's key service from Saskatoon to Regina to 3x daily, effective November 19, 2018. The route is served by West Wind's fully-owned virtual carrier subsidiary Express Air (Canada) (WEW, Saskatoon) with Beech 1900D equipment.
In addition, the carrier is also eyeing launching maiden services beyond the state of Saskatchewan. New CEO Michael Rodyniuk said that West Wind would like to fly "north, south, east, and west" from Saskatchewan. The expansion would be possible given the underutilisation of the carrier's Beech 1900Ds after some uranium mines in northern Saskatchewan were closed. West Wind Aviation used to operate commuter flights to these mines.
Currently, West Wind through another subsidiary, Transwest Air (4T, Prince Albert), operates scheduled services within Saskatchewan connecting Saskatoon, Fond du Lac, Stony Rapids, Points North Landing, Wollaston Lake, La Ronge, and Prince Albert. The carrier's main brand is used predominantly for charter services.
Rodyniuk also said that the carrier would consider adding more Saabs for Transwest Air with both cargo and passenger-carrying capabilities.
West Wind Aviation together with its two subsidiaries operates seven Beech 1900Ds, four Beech King Air 200s, two Jetstream 31s, three Cessna 401s, four ATR42-300s, four DHC-6s, one Saab 340A(QC), and three Saab 340Bs.
The carrier recently experienced a half-year-long grounding after a crash of one of its ATR42s near Fond du Lac in December 2017. Its Air Operator's Certificate was reinstated in May 2018.

Nearly 100 volunteers including contest winners and their guests took off for the Dominican Republic to participate in a four-day service trip alongside some of JetBlue’s crewmembers and non-profit partners, with projects taking place in La Romana and Punta Cana. JetBlue is the largest airline serving the Dominican Republic since it first started service to the island destination in 2004.
Volunteers were surprised with a special send-off at JetBlue’s Terminal 5, as the airline also revealed its new JetBlue For Good aircraft. This plane celebrates the hundreds of thousands of hours JetBlue crewmembers have dedicated to doing good in the airline’s 100+ communities.
“We’re excited to celebrate and empower our customers and crewmembers to join us in doing good,” said Icema Gibbs, director of corporate social responsibility, JetBlue. “We picked Giving Tuesday, the international day of giving, to send volunteers on a service trip to give back in one of our key communities – the Dominican Republic – to symbolize all of the good we do throughout the year.”
On the ground in “Destination Good” – Once the JetBlue For Good aircraft lands in the Dominican Republic, volunteers will take part in three days of volunteerism with each day dedicated to one of JetBlue For Good’s pillars: youth and education, community and the environment. Activities will include projects ranging from renovating a local school, to beautifying a community play space and building buoys to protect coral reef beds.
Details on the JetBlue For Good pillars and Destination Good service project include:
Youth and Education – In partnership with The Dream Project, an organization that provides quality education in the Dominican Republic, Destination Good volunteers will help renovate a school which helps children with disabilities prepare to transition to general school. In addition to a new roof provided by JetBlue, volunteers will repaint the facility, renovate the library and host a book fair for local children and families.
Community – Supporting the Paradisus by Meliá, which is launching a ”Volunteer Vacations” program for resort guests in 2019, Destination Good volunteers will be making much-needed updates to a local school, including the addition of a play space for the community children. Together, the group will be beautifying the surrounding wall with a large paint project, as well as upgrading the existing basketball court. A donation of basketballs and other play equipment will be made to the school.
The Environment – In collaboration with Fundemar, an organization dedicated to the conservation of marine ecosystems of the Dominican Republic, volunteers will assist in building 65 buoys that will protect coral reef beds. Coral reefs are gravely threatened by climate change and other pressures such as marine pollution. In 2012 FUNDEMAR started a program of coral reef restoration, which includes coral nurseries, rescue centers and transplant zones, as a mechanism to promote the coral’s resilience to climate change.
The new JetBlue For Good branded aircraft – Good is in JetBlue’s DNA. At the center of the plane’s paint scheme are sketches of crewmembers who power JetBlue’s mission of Inspiring Humanity® each day. Designed by a cross-section of crewmembers representing the airline’s mission, the plane showcases JetBlue For Good’s three pillars. For a behind-the-scenes on the painting of the aircraft, visit https://youtu.be/Pngy1V7fYq0.
“Our mission and focus on giving extends well beyond just one day,” said Gibbs. “The new JetBlue For Good aircraft was designed to inspire our customers and crewmembers throughout our network to think about what they can do to make their community a better place.”
The Airbus A320 aircraft will spread the message that JetBlue is up for good as it travels throughout the airline’s network in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean. The livery depicts crewmembers peeling back a curtain to reveal an array of illustrations symbolizing the airline’s unique culture and many of the causes JetBlue and its customers and crewmember are passionate about including:

The contest received more than 40,000 entries from customers who were eager to share why doing good and volunteering is important to them.

Royal Air Maroc orders additional ATR 72-600 Tuesday 27 November 2018
Launch customer of latest ATR -600 series expands ATR fleet
Moroccan national flag-carrier, Royal Air Maroc, is adding an additional ATR 72-600 to its fleet. This will bring its total ATR 72-600 fleet to six aircraft. The aircraft will be delivered before the end of the year and will be configured in the same dual-class configuration as the airline’s current ATR fleet.
ATR’s Chief Executive Officer Stefano Bortoli commented: “Seeing the launch customer of the ATR -600 series place a repeat order is a real source of pride for us, as it validates the enduring quality of our product and proves that it is the ideal solution to the challenges of regional connectivity in Africa. Royal Air Maroc is selecting an aircraft that offers a 40% advantage in fuel burn, the lowest operating costs and a modern and comfortable cabin, therefore buying the best value in the market.”
Abdelhamid Addou, Chairman and CEO of Royal Air Maroc said: “As we already are exploiting five ATRs, this ATR 72-600 will be added to our fleet in a smooth way. The aircraft is operationally proven in Morocco and offers our passengers a comfortable cabin. It is a good aircraft to complement our single-aisle fleet, and it will enable us to adapt even better our domestic and regional market capacity, offering more flight options to our passengers.”
Royal Air Maroc was the launch customer for the ATR -600 series and took delivery of their first ATR 72-600 in 2011. In the following seven years, ATR has delivered in total over 500 ATR
-600 series aircraft, becoming the market leader in the regional segment thanks to its unbeatable economics, the widest and most comfortable cabin, operational flexibility, and state-of-the-art avionics.
In 2018 in the Africa region, ATR has delivered brand-new ATR 72-600s to Air Sénégal and Air Botswana. EWA Air and Royal Air Maroc will be the next customers to receive their new ATR-600s before the end of the year.
In terms of market outlook, Africa and the Middle East will require 350 turboprops in the next 20 years, to serve 300 new routes further developing regional aviation. Regional connectivity supports local economies, with a 10% increase in flights generating a 5% rise in tourism, an increase of 6% in local GDP and 8% more Foreign Direct Investment.

Boeing, Turkish Airlines Announce Order for Additional 777 Jets
Amid record financial results and strong demand, Turkey's flag carrier adds three Boeing 777 Freighters
Turkish's freight business growing by double digits; aims to be one of the world's largest cargo carrie
Boeing to open engineering center in Istanbul, expanding strategic partnership with Turkey
SEATTLE, Nov. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Turkish Airlines today announced an order for three 777 Freighters as the flag carrier of Turkey continues to soar on record financial results and double-digit passenger and cargo growth. The order adds more of the long-range freighter to Turkish's fleet as the airline pursues its goal of becoming the world's largest cargo carrier.
Based on the 777-200LR (Longer Range), the 777 Freighter can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload of 112 tons (102 metric tonnes or 102,000 kg). The long range means fewer stops and associated landing fees, less congestion at transfer hubs, lower cargo handling costs and shorter delivery times.
"We are excited to expand our efficient cargo fleet with the 777 Freighter. This aircraft has contributed greatly to Turkish Cargo, Turkish Airlines' successful sub brand, becoming the fastest-growing air cargo carrier in the world. The additional aircraft will provide us more flexibility to serve even more destinations as we continue to grow our global freight network," said M. İlker Aycı, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee.
The new order comes days after Turkish Airlines posted record profits for the first nine months of 2018 on strong passenger and cargo demand. The carrier's air freight business saw a 25-percent tonnage increase and a 29-percent revenue increase compared to the same period a year ago. The results extend the airline's success in recent years as Turkey has become one of the largest and fastest-growing aviation markets.
In line with the rapid growth, Turkish Airlines has steadily expanded its current and future fleet. Last January, the carrier announced the order of three 777 Freighters. Two months later, Turkish finalized an order for 25 787-9 Dreamliners and five options to prepare for growing demand at Istanbul's third airport, named "Istanbul Airport" by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during its official opening last month. Over the past few months, Turkish has begun taking delivery of new 737 MAX airplanes to refresh its single-aisle jets. In all, the airline's fleet of Boeing jetliners has grown to more than 160, with nearly 100 additional jets on order.
"Turkish Airlines has achieved significant success over the past decade. In addition to introducing innovations that have powered the growth of Turkey's commercial aviation sector and anchored a new state-of-the art airport, the airline is delivering outstanding results and rising in the ranks of elite airlines. We are extremely honored that Turkish Airlines has placed its trust and confidence in Boeing's flagship airplanes: the 737 MAX, the 777 and the 787 Dreamliner," said Kevin McAllister, president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
With more than 30 777s in its fleet, Turkish Airlines is among the top 10 operators of the wide-body jet in Europe and the Middle East.
To support the long-term growth of the Turkish aerospace industry and strengthen Boeing's presence in the country, Boeing launched a strategic partnership program in Turkey last year, called the National Aerospace Initiative. Aligned with the targets of Turkey's Vision 2023 that set for the 100th anniversary of Turkish Republic's foundation, the initiative lays out a strategic collaboration framework in four key areas: industrial development, technology acceleration, services collaboration and advanced-skill training.
In line with these goals, Boeing is planning to open an engineering center in Istanbul that would specialize in research and support Turkey's growing aerospace capability. The company also recently expanded its collaboration with Turkish Technic, the maintenance arm of Turkish Airlines. Under the agreement, Turkish Technic becomes a strategic supplier for Boeing's Global Fleet Care program, providing operators with line maintenance, heavy maintenance, component service and repair for multiple aircraft models. Additionally, Boeing and Turkish Technic will partner to train and certify aircraft technicians.
"We continue to expand our commitment to grow in Turkey, together with Turkey. Our new engineering center and our growing cooperation in so many areas with the Turkish aerospace sector reflect our confidence in the country's capabilities," said McAllister.

Sukhoi Civil finds second European customer for its Superjet 100
Adria Airways, an operator of western-built aircraft, has signed a LOI with Sukhoi Civil covering 15 Superjet 100 aircraft (Adria Airways)
Slovenia’s Adria Airways – and its German-run owner 4K Invest – have signalled a move towards a possible strategic relationship with Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company (SCAC), by expressing an intention to lease 15 Superjet aircraft whilst also establishing a joint SSJ100 maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business for the type in the central European republic.
The Ljubljana-based carrier, currently an operator of western-built predominantly regional aircraft, has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Sukhoi Civil covering 15 Superjet 100 aircraft. In addition, the parties have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a joint MRO venture for the SSJ100 at Ljubljana Airport, reveals Denis Manturov, the Russian Federation’s minister of industry and trade. Aircraft deliveries will commence as early as “the beginning of 2019, under a long-term lease arrangement,” the minister adds.
SCAC president Alexander Rubtsov, Holger Kowarsch who is chief executive of Adria Airways and Dr Martin Vorderwulbecke, managing director of AA Aviation (a 4K Invest company), have all indicated that the signed papers open a new chapter towards “a strategic relationship between the parties”, a SCAC statement reads. The Slovenian airline, which claims to have been evaluating the Superjet 100 since 2016, believes the Russian-built regional aircraft “will totally support” Adria Airways´ development strategy.
“During the past two years we have been analysing the SSJ100 type and have come to the conclusion that all the technical and operational characteristics of this aircraft would best suit our strategic goals,” says Kowarsch. He also adds that the introduction of the SSJ100s would release more of its Bombardier CRJs and Airbus aircraft for outsourced ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) operations.
Addressing the issue of the SSJ100’s international operator concerns over poor after-sales support and the type’s ‘childhood diseases’, the manufacturer has agreed to set up the MRO joint venture with the Slovenian flag carrier at its base. “We realise that the SSJ100 after-sales support at the entry to the European market must be organised profoundly and professionally. Together with Adria Airways we will create a joint maintenance and repair organisation for the SSJ100 at Ljubljana Airport. That service platform will secure the operational reliability of the SSJ100 aircraft in Europe,” SCAC’s Rubtsov states.
In September, Belgium’s Brussels Airlines announced that it is not extending its Superjet 100 wet lease contract with service provider Ireland-based CityJet, citing ‘challenging maintenance’ issues. Mexican airline Interjet has 22 of the Russian-built jets, with only 12 currently operational.
100 per cent owned by Germany-based private equity firm 4K Invest, Adria Airways currently operates a fleet of 15 jets: three Airbus A319s, three Bombardier CRJ700s and nine CRJ900s, as well as three Saab 200 turboprops.
