All-Boeing fleet of Ukraine’s SkyUp reaches 10 aircraft
SkyUp doubled the number of its Boeing 737NGs to 10 aircraft this year (SkyUp)
Ukrainian airline SkyUp has taken delivery of another Boeing 737NG, its final addition for this year. The latest Boeing 737-900ER arrived at the airline’s Kyiv Boryspil base on December 12.
By doubling the number of its Boeing 737NGs to 10 aircraft, the start-up hybrid-model carrier has thus completed its 2019 fleet expansion plan and now operates two Boeing 737-700s, two -900ERs and six -800s.
The latest addition, a 2008-produced CFM56-7B-powered B737-900ER, with registration UR-SQJ (MSN 35225), is the largest and longest-range aircraft in SkyUp’s fleet and was previously operated by the now defunct Indian carrier Jet Airways. Prior to changing hands, the aircraft’s cabin was configured with 215 passenger seats, it received a new paint scheme and was retrofitted with Split Scimitar winglets. The Ukrainian airline has installed winglets on all of its aircraft to help it reduce fuel burn costs, increase range. All its aircraft also feature new passenger seats, and these are due to be installed on UR-SQJ early next year.
The fleet plan for 2020 is to bring the number of aircraft up to 14, by adding two new Boeing 737 MAX-8s and two used Boeing 737-900ERs.
In November 2019, SkyUp Airlines carried 173,209 passengers on 1,105 flights, of which 553 were scheduled and 532 charters. In the first 11 months of this year a total of 1.54 million passengers chose the Ukrainian airline for their travel needs.
HAC Takes Delivery of First ATR 42-600
Toulouse, 17 December, 2019 – World number one regional aircraft manufacturer ATR today delivered the first of two ATR 42-600 aircraft to Hokkaido Air System Co., Ltd (HAC), a JAL Group Company. This delivery marks the first step in HAC’s replacement of its Saab 340 fleet. The delivery of this aircraft will ensure that essential regional air connectivity in Hokkaido can continue.
The ATR 42-600 will offer HAC increased capacity for the same operating costs – generating opportunities for the airline to increase revenues. It will also provide HAC’s passengers with a modern, comfortable cabin featuring latest generation 18”-wide seats as well as more space for luggage in the overhead bins.
Tetsu Ohori, Chief Executive Officer of HAC said: “Today is a long-awaited day for us at Hokkaido Air System, and becomes a memorable day, marking a new chapter in our history. We have so many tourists who enjoy the fantastic ‘Mother Nature’ of Hokkaido. In winter, the great nature turns her face with severe cold and heavy snow. ATR’s market estimates forecast that around 900 30-50 seat aircraft will soon need to be replaced as older and inefficient aircraft come to the end of their lives. The ATR 42-600 is part of ATR’s unique family of regional aircraft, including the ATR 72-600, the ATR 42-600S (Short Take-Off and Landing) and the ATR 72-600F, the only brand new regional freighter. Together, they represent the ideal and modern solution to ensure that essential connectivity is maintained for local communities all over the world, while flying sustainably, emitting up to 40% less CO2 compared with regional jets.
First Airbus A350-1000 joins Air Caraïbes’ fleet
Air Caraïbes (a member airline of Groupe Dubreuil) has taken delivery of its first A350-1000, the largest member of Airbus’ new-generation A350 XWB Family, making it the first French operator of the type. The airline plans to operate its A350-1000s alongside its three A350-900s and six A330s on routes from Paris to the French Caribbean. The new aircraft will seamlessly integrate into Air Caraïbes existing fleet thanks to Airbus’ unique fleet commonality and provide the airline with additional flexibility. In total, Groupe Dubreuil has three A350-1000s on order.
Air Caraïbes’ A350-1000 are configured in a three-class layout with 429 seats (24 “Madras” Business, 45 in “Caraïbes” Premium Economy and 360 in “Soleil” Economy). All A350 XWBs are equipped with a quiet and comfortable Airspace cabin with a new lighting system, which strengthens the sense of passenger wellbeing and relaxation on long-haul flights.
The A350 XWB features the latest aerodynamic design, a carbon fibre fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines. Together, these features translate into unrivalled levels of operational efficiency with a 25% reduction in fuel burn and emissions. The A350 XWB’s Airspace cabin is the quietest of any twin-aisle and offers passengers and crews the most modern in-flight products for the most comfortable flying experience.
At the end of November 2019, the A350 XWB Family had received 959 firm orders from 51 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.
Air France-KLM firms up order for 60 Airbus A220s
The Air France–KLM Group has firmed up an order for 60 Airbus A220-300 aircraft to modernise its single-aisle fleet. The aircraft are intended to be operated by Air France.
“We are glad to see that Air France is endorsing the A220 as a great step towards fleet optimisation for large network carriers. The largest Airbus A220 order from a European carrier to date speaks volumes on Air France’s ambitious sustainability drive. The modern and fuel efficient Airbus A220 will contribute to lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions significantly compared to older generation aircraft,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer. “We thank Air France for the confidence placed in Airbus and for its investment in our latest technology aircraft.”
Air France-KLM currently operates a fleet of 159 Airbus aircraft.
The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market; it delivers significant fuel efficiency and widebody passenger comfort in a single-aisle aircraft. The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines to offer at least 20% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. The A220 offers the performance of larger single-aisle aircraft. With an order book of 530 aircraft as of the end of November 2019, the A220 has all the credentials to win the lion’s share of the 100-to-150-seat aircraft market, estimated to represent 7,000 aircraft over the next 20 years.
Air Canada takes delivery of its first A220
Air Canada has taken delivery of its first A220-300, designed, built and delivered from the Mirabel A220 programme facilities in Canada. The first aircraft out of an order of 45 will enter service in January 2020, making Air Canada the first airline to operate the A220-300 in North America.
The A220 will enable the Montreal-based airline to comfortably fly passengers on various routes in Canada and to the United States, offering a dual-class cabin that comfortably seats 137 passengers; 12 in business class and 125 in economy class.
“This is a highly anticipated moment for Air Canada as we welcome this game-changing aircraft into our fleet, the next step in our fleet modernisation. It will not only allow us to transport our customers in comfort, but also further our environmental commitment with its improved efficiency. The A220 will enable Air Canada to strengthen our position on transborder and transcontinental markets and will be key to our continued growth. Our customers will benefit from the A220’s innovative design features, including a choice of two spacious and comfortable cabins, larger overhead bins, bigger windows and a quieter experience in flight,” said Michael Rousseau, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer at Air Canada.

Being the only aircraft purpose-built for this specific small single-aisle market segment, the A220 will enable Air Canada to open new routes that were previously not feasible. Together, the performance, economics and comfort features of the A220 will allow Air Canada to fly Montreal to Seattle as well as Toronto to San Jose, as of Spring 2020.
Fully in line with Air Canada’s plan to become a sustainable airline, the A220 is the quietest, cleanest and most eco-friendly aircraft in its category. Featuring 50% reduction in noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards, the A220 is a great aircraft for neighborhood airports. Air Canada currently operates a fleet of 116 Airbus aircraft.
The first Air Canada A220 will be unveiled to the public and media during a ceremony at the airline’s headquarters in Montreal on January 15, 2020.
