Airbus delivers 26 A380s in 2011

Airbus this month delivered four A380s, setting a new monthly delivery record for the aircraft. The manufacturer delivered 26 A380s this year, one more than its goal of 25.

Airbus expects to further increase the delivery rate of the A380 and aims to bring the number to around 30 in 2012 and eventually 39-40, A380 product marketing director Keith Stonestreet told ATW in Toulouse.

In the first week of December, Airbus handed over an A380 to Emirates and last week it delivered three—one to Qantas (QF), one more to EK and one to China Southern (CZ)—bringing the total number of A380s ever delivered to 67 (to seven operators). EK has now 20 A380s in its fleet.

This year, two aircraft were delivered to Air France, five to QF, four to Lufthansa, five to Korean Air, three to Singapore Airlines, five to Emirates and two to CZ.

Stonestreet said A380s are flying on some 50 routes to 28 destinations, and operate to/from 12 of the top 20 airports in total passenger throughput and 14 of world largest international airports.

The aircraft is seen daily at nine of the top 10 international airports, but Stonestreet said it was a misconception that the A380 was only a hub-to-hub aircraft. “It operates also more and more on hub-to-point,” he said, citing Dubai (DXB)-Manchester, UK and DXB-Jeddah services as examples.

New A380 operators for 2012 include Malaysian Airlines and Thai Airways International

Thai to operate first A380 on regional routes

Thai Airways International (TG) will deploy its first Airbus A380 on regional routes, most likely Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)-Hong Kong (HKG).

Speaking to ATW during a visit to Toulouse to view the carrier’s first A380 on the final assembly line, TG executives said the carrier will operate between BKK and Frankfurt (FRA) only “after we receive the second aircraft delivery around November 2012. Upon receiving additional aircraft, Thai will operate to London [Heathrow (LHR)] and then Paris [Charles de Gaulle].”

According to insiders, daily BKK-FRA service will commence in January 2013 and BKK-LHR service will begin in spring 2013.

TG has six A380s on firm order and plans to take delivery of the first three aircraft next year and three in 2013

Boeing to Convert 747-400 to Freighter for Evergreen International Airlines

Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Evergreen International Airlines, a subsidiary of Evergreen International Aviation, today announced the airline will introduce the 747-400 Boeing Converted Freighter to its fleet with delivery to Evergreen in 2012.

The conversion will be the 50th 747-400 jetliner to be modified to a freighter configuration by Boeing, which provides overall management of the conversion, including engineering and materials. Boeing contracts with Taikoo Aircraft Engineering (TAECO) in Xiamen, China, for the modification work.

“This new Boeing 747-400BCF will provide a new dimension for our operations,” said Evergreen International Airlines President Blair Berselli. “The airplane will bring improvements in economics, efficiency and environmental performance and, since Boeing is responsible for the modification, we know that the airplane will receive the superior support that we have come to expect from Boeing.”

Evergreen International Airlines, based in McMinnville, Ore., currently operates 10 747s, including one 747-400 Freighter and nine 747-200 Freighters.

“The 747-400 Boeing Converted Freighter provides efficiency and reliability that will enable Evergreen International Airlines to profitably grow its business,” said Dan da Silva, vice president of Freighter Conversions for Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. “Reaching the 50 conversion milestone shows that air cargo industry recognizes the value of the 747-400BCF.”

Modifications to the airplane include a side cargo door addition, a new, strengthened main-deck floor, full main-deck lining installation, provisions for a new cargo handling system and complete revisions to the airplane systems. The 747-400BCF has positions for 30 pallets on the main deck - volume which is comparable to the 747-400 production freighter.
The 747-400BCF program was launched in 2004 and the first delivery took place in 2005.

Evergreen International Airlines is recognized as a world leader in air freight, providing air cargo transportation and charter services for major airlines, freight forwarders and the U.S. Government. In additional, Evergreen is well-known for its Boeing 747 Supertanker, a converted 747-100, which can carry 20,000 gallons of water, retardant or other fire agents and is deployed around the world for firefighting missions.

Tanzania’s Precision Air Services signs contract for 5 ATR -600s

The airline will introduce four ATR 42-600s and one ATR 72-600 and will become the largest operator of ATRs in Africa

Tanzanian carrier Precision Air Services and ATR today announced the signature of a contract for the purchase of four ATR 42-600s and one ATR 72-600 aircraft. The deal is valued at US$ 98 million. Delivery of the 50-seat ATR 42-600s will start in late 2012. The ATR 72-600 will be delivered in 2014.

With this acquisition, Precision Air Services will bring its fleet of ATRs up to 14 aircraft, thus becoming the largest operator of ATR aircraft in Africa. The current fleet of ATRs of Precision Air Services includes 5 ATR 72-500s, 2 ATR 42-500s and 2 ATR 42-300s.

With the introduction of these 5 brand new ATR ‘-600 series’ aircraft, the carrier will further develop its regional network, adding new routes and frequencies to its domestic market. This fleet expansion will allow the airline to offer its passengers the advantages and comfort of the new ATR -600 series ‘Armonia’ cabin.

Commenting on the deal, Michael Shirima, the Board of Directors Chairman of Precision Air Services declared: “We have been operating ATR aircraft for years, and we are totally convinced of their suitability for our regional routes. The ATRs are perfectly adapted to the hot climate in Africa, and feature optimal performance in smaller airfields and unpaved runways. Also, they provide us the lowest operating costs, thus strongly contributing to the development of regional aviation in our country”.

Alfonse Kioko, Group Managing Director and CEO of Precision Air, commented: "The very low fuel burn and the high dispatch reliability of the ATR aircraft, are helping us to maintain the level of ticket price necessary for the very strong competition in our market".

ATR and Precision Air Services set up in 2006 a joint-partnership for certified aeronautical maintenance training for some selected Tanzanian students. Each student spends three years being trained at the Aeronautical Technical School in Toulouse, France, and then joins Precision Air Services’ maintenance crew in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. So far, 12 students have already completed their training and joined the airline. Other additional 24 students are currently being trained or programmed in the coming years.

Filippo Bagnato, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, declared: “We are pleased to introduce the new ATR -600s in Eastern Africa, as well as to receive again the confidence of Precision Air Services. We have developed a strong partnership with the airline across time, which includes also the development of training programmes for maintenance and piloting activities. We are convinced that such fruitful relationship will be further strengthening in the coming years”.

ATR has today 110 aircraft in operation and on order with African and Middle East carriers and is established in 25 countries of the region.

EMBRAER DELIVERS FIRST E-JET TO CHINA’S HEBEI AIRLINES

E190 provides greater connectivity and contributes to developing local aviation industry

Conteúdo
– Embraer delivered two EMBRAER 190 (E190) jets to China’s Hebei Airlines Co., Ltd., today, in a ceremony held at the Company’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil. The sale of these two E190s was confirmed this month, and the purchase of another eight jets is still subject to the Chinese government approval. Based in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of China’s Hebei Province, the E190s will be deployed to support establishing a hub network within Hebei Province, while also flying from Shijiazhuang to other provincial capitals, with more routes and frequencies.

“We welcome Hebei Airlines as the latest E-Jets operator, and we are honored that the E190’s operational characteristics have attracted the attention of the leaders of the Hebei Provincial Government, which we consider to be high recognition of our products,” said Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, President of Embraer Commercial Aviation. “The E190 is being well received by the marketplace, worldwide, for its outstanding economics, performance and comfort. We are confident that the E-Jets will support the market development of Hebei Airlines and play an important role in promoting local economic and aviation transport growth.”

“We are glad to take delivery of our first two E190s. The introduction of these jets during the Chinese 12th-five-year period (2011-2015) matches the company’s marketing strategy, and is one of our important initiatives in response to the State’s call to build China as a civil aviation powerhouse by improving the country’s regional aviation sector,” said Mr. Luo Zhanling, Vice Chairman of Hebei Airlines. “We will fully leverage the jets’ advantages in seat capacity and range performance to build a hub network. We hope that the two parties can work together to make our respective contributions to local civil aviation development and to promote economic and cultural exchange.”

To date, Embraer has logged 153 firm orders for commercial and executive jets from China, including 85 E190s. The Company has delivered 46 ERJ 145s, 55 E190s (counting the current two jets), and three executive jets. Embraer is the leader in China’s regional aviation market, holding a significant 76% share.

The E190 is the third of four members of Embraer’s E-Jets family. The E-Jets have achieved outstanding success, with over 1,000 firm orders and 800 jets in operation, worldwide. The 98- to 114-seat E190 allows flexible operations with a range of 4,450 kilometers (2,400 nautical miles), including low-cost services for low- and medium-volume markets. The jet is being used along with narrowbody aircraft, in accordance with time-of-the-day or seasonal passenger volume changes, to right-size fleets and to achieve significant trip cost savings. Additionally, it is also being used to develop new routes and to substitute old, inefficient jets. Besides economic efficiency and performance flexibility, comfort is another hallmark of the E190. Its double-bubble fuselage maximizes passenger cabin space with the widest seats and aisle among aircraft in its class. The no-middle-seat configuration and optional advanced in-flight entertainment system also contribute to a superior passenger experience

7,000th Airbus aircraft delivered – an A321 to US Airways

Airbus delivered today its 7,000th aircraft, an A321, to US Airways – the airline that operates the largest fleet of Airbus aircraft in the world – from the Airbus facility in Hamburg, Germany. This milestone comes just two years after the delivery of Airbus’ 6,000th aircraft which underlines the continued vibrancy of the commercial aviation sector and the market’s clear vote for eco-efficient aircraft.
The 1,000th Airbus delivery was an A340-300 that went to Air France in 1993, nineteen years after the first Airbus aircraft was delivered – an A300B2 also to Air France, in 1974. The 2,000th delivery was six years later in 1999. It took half that time, just three years, to get to the 3,000th delivery in 2002 and three more years to reach 4,000 deliveries. The tempo went up another notch taking Airbus only two years to hand over its 5,000th aircraft, an A330-200 to Qantas in December 2007. The 6,000th Airbus was an A380 which was delivered to Emirates in January 2010.
“It’s particularly fitting that our 7,000th aircraft is an A321 going to US Airways. The airline not only operates the largest fleet of Airbus aircraft in the world; with over 220 A320 Family aircraft flying in US Airways colours today, they also operate the largest fleet of our best-selling, eco-efficient A320 Family,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO. “This milestone is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of Airbus teams around the world. We have improved efficiencies company-wide and this has enabled us to deliver record numbers of latest generation aircraft at continually increasing rates, with an environmental footprint ever decreasing.”
“Airbus has been a long-term strategic partner to US Airways. Today we celebrate a significant milestone in Airbus’ history,” said US Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, Douglas Parker. “It is an honor to be the recipient of their 7,000th delivery. On behalf of the 32,000 employees at US Airways, we applaud this tremendous accomplishment and look forward to a continued successful partnership.”
By the end of the year, US Airways will operate a fleet of 93 A319s, 72 A320s, 63 A321s and 16 A330s. The airline also has firm orders for an additional 58 A320 Family aircraft, eight A330 aircraft and 22 A350 XWBs on backlog.
Over 8,200 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,900 delivered to more than 340 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality with the current A320, making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.

Buddha Air - Beechcraft 1900D (9N-AEE) " Everest Experience"

The Himalaya is the youngest yet highest mountain range in the world and forms a natural border for Nepal in the northern front. For Nepalese these mountains are the sacred abode of the gods but they also continue to captivate millions around the world due to their sheer majesty and beauty; tempting thousands to attempt at conquering its peaks. Those who actually reach the Himalaya will tell you that the experience can indeed be very humbling.

Of the fourteen peaks higher than 8000 meters, eight are in Nepal. Although there is no denying that walking up and down the hills for a close up view of the Himalaya is very much worth the effort, this we have to confess is not for everyone, due to the physical and time requirements. Buddha Air's Everest Experience is meant especially for those who don't want to leave Nepal without touching the sacred and majestic Himalaya.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Sets Speed, Distance Records

The sixth 787 – ZA006 – departed Boeing Field in Seattle on Dec. 6, 2011 and completed an around-the-world trip on Dec. 8 that led to two different world records. The 787 now holds the record for the longest flight and the fastest speed around the world for its weight class.

"Speed and distance capabilities are fundamental to the value the 787 brings to the market," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "These records are a great way to demonstrate that this airplane is the game-changer we have promised."

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is the first airplane to provide both long distance capabilities with mid-size capacity (210-250 passengers in a three-class seating), allowing airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public. The airplane is 20 percent more fuel efficient than similarly sized airplanes.

The sixth 787, ZA006, powered by General Electric GEnx engines, departed from Boeing Field in Seattle at 11:02 a.m. on Dec. 6 and set the distance record for its class (440,000-550,000 lbs.) with a 10,710 nmi (19,835 km) flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh, with credit for 10,337 nmi (19,144 km). This record had previously been held by the Airbus A330 based on a 9,127 nmi (16,903 km) flight in 2002.

Following an approximately two-hour stop for refueling in Dhaka, the airplane returned to Seattle on a 9,734 nmi (18,027 km) flight. The airplane landed at 5:29 a.m. on Dec. 8, setting a new record for speed around the world (eastbound) with a total trip time of 42 hours and 27 minutes. There was no previous around-the-world speed record for this weight class.

The 787 carried six pilots, an observer for the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), and operations and other Boeing employees – 13 people in total.

Flight routing on the first segment of the journey took the airplane from Seattle across the U.S. to Nantucket. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the airplane entered European air space at Santiago, Spain, and proceeded down the Mediterranean, across Egypt to Luxor, across the Middle East and over India to Bangladesh. On the second segment, the Dreamliner flew over Singapore, the Philippines and Guam before entering U.S. airspace over Honolulu and returning to Seattle.

Boeing holds world records for longest distance flights in five weight classes with records set by the KC-135, 767-200ER (extended range), 777-200 and 777-200LR (longer range). The 777-200 also holds the speed record for its weight class.
