Airbus delivers 100th aircraft in Japan

Jetstar Japan welcomes its 10th A320

With the latest delivery of an A320 to Jetstar Japan, the total number of Airbus aircraft delivered to Japanese carriers has risen to 100, underscoring the rapidly growing number of Airbus single-aisle aircraft in the country.

In just nine months since beginning operations in July 2012, Jetstar fleet has grown to 10 aircraft. Airbus delivered its first aircraft to a Japanese carrier in 1980 (an A300B2) and in the last two years deliveries have accelerated rapidly. In 2012, Airbus delivered a total of 16 A320s, and in 2013 nearly 30 A320s (28) will be delivered to four Japanese operators.

This success is being boosted by new low cost airlines, all of whom have chosen an all Airbus fleet for their operations. In the years to come deliveries to Japanese carriers will also include A330s and A380s.

“Jetstar Japan is pleased to receive its 10th A320 and also congratulates Airbus’ 100th aircraft delivery in Japan,” Jetstar Japan President Miyuki Suzuki said. “With an increasing Airbus single-aisle fleet, we are in an excellent position to benefit from this growing market and to expand our business sustainably.”

“With 100% market share, Airbus aircraft clearly are the preferred choice for Japanese low cost carriers” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We are delighted to celebrate Japan’s 100th Airbus aircraft delivery milestone with Jetstar Japan, underlining the values that the A320 brings to this market segment.”

Jetstar Japan started operations in July 2012. The company is a joint venture between the Qantas Group, Japan Airlines (JAL), Mitsubishi Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation. Jetstar Japan now operates an all-Airbus fleet of ten leased A320s, and this will grow to 24 aircraft by the end of 2014.

As of today, over 9,100 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold worldwide and over 5,400 aircraft delivered to more than 380 customers and operators, making it the world’s best selling commercial jetliner ever.
