Boeing Awarded $2.1B for Third KC-46A Tanker Production Lot
EVERETT, Wash., Jan. 27, 2017 – The U.S. Air Force today awarded Boeing [NYSE: BA] $2.1 billion for 15 KC-46A tanker aircraft, spare engines and wing air refueling pod kits.
This order is the third low-rate initial production lot for Boeing. The first two came in August 2016 and included seven and 12 planes, respectively, as well as spare parts.
Boeing plans to build 179 of the 767-based refueling aircraft for the Air Force to replace its legacy tanker fleet. Tanker deliveries will begin later this year.
“This award is great news for the joint Boeing-Air Force team and reinforces the need for this highly efficient and capable tanker aircraft,” said Mike Gibbons, Boeing KC-46A tanker vice president and program manager. “Our Boeing industry team is hard at work building and testing KC-46 aircraft, and we look forward to first delivery.”
"Placing an order for another 15 aircraft is another important milestone for the KC-46 program," said Col. John Newberry, Air Force KC-46 System program manager. "I know the warfighter is excited about bringing this next generation capability into the inventory."
Boeing received an initial contract in 2011 to design and develop the Air Force’s next-generation tanker aircraft. As part of that contract, Boeing built four test aircraft – two configured as 767-2Cs and two as KC-46A tankers. Those test aircraft, along with the first production plane, have completed nearly 1,500 flight hours to date.
The KC-46A is a multirole tanker that can refuel all allied and coalition military aircraft compatible with international aerial refueling procedures and can carry passengers, cargo and patients.
Boeing is assembling KC-46 aircraft at its Everett, Wash., facility.

Yamal Airlines to accept six Superjet 100s
According to the initial plan, the six aircraft were scheduled for delivery to Yamal before the end of the last year (Photo by Yamal Airlines)
Russia’s GTLK State Transport Leasing Company has initiated delivery of a batch of six Sukhoi Superjet 100s (SSJ 100) to local regional carrier Yamal Airlines. The acceptance procedures are taking place in Zhukovsky, near Moscow, a GTLK spokesperson told Russian Aviation Insider last week. According to the initial plan, the six aircraft were scheduled for delivery to Yamal before the end of the last year.
Yamal Airlines currently operates three SSJ 100s in a single-class 103 seats configuration. Before the end of 2017 the airline is expecting delivery of the total of 13 aircraft of the type under a firm contract signed last year. This batch includes two aircraft (MSN 95109 and 95112, tail numbers RA-8906 and RA-89069 respectively) in long-range version with the seating capacity for 100 passengers, which may be converted into 93-seat version.
Yamal’s general director Vassiliy Kryuk mentioned that the leasing agreement for the SSJ 100s the carrier operates at the moment was signed for just one year, not 12 as initially planned. He did not however specify the reason.
In 2015 GTLK and Yamal inked a letter of intent for the total of 25 SSJ 100s at the Moscow MAKS air show.
Next to Yamal, another Russian carrier Yakutia Airlines is also taking delivery of a SSJ 100 in Zhukovsky. This SSJ 100LR variant, MSN 95077, tail number RA-89037, was assembled in November 2016 and also has a single-class 103 seats configuration. The carrier will operate it under 12 year operational lease agreement with GTLK.

Arik Air replaces Boeing 747s with 787s
Nigeria’s Arik Air has scrapped a longstanding order for two Boeing 747-8Is, replacing it with a pair of Boeing 787-9s.
The change means a further shrinking of the already slim orderbook for the 747-8. Most of the 747s ordered to date have been the -8 freighter version, as airlines increasingly turn to “big twins” for long-haul passenger services.
Boeing has reduced the 747-8 production rate to 0.5 aircraft a month as it fulfills remaining orders.
Arik Air’s order for the 747-8I dates back to 2011.
The two 787-9s are worth $529 million at book value. A regional source, who requested not to be identified, told ATW the 787-9 “makes much better sense” than the 747-8I for Arik Air, notably on routes to the US and UK.
Boeing said the delivery dates were a matter for the customer; an Arik Air representative said she did not have that information, but understood deliveries were “not imminent.”
According to Arik Air’s website, the Nigerian flag carrier’s long-haul fleet comprises two Airbus A340-500s and two A330-200s. Its short- to medium-haul services are operated by a mixed batch of 10 Boeing 737-700s and -800s, while regional routes are operated by four Bombardier CRJ900s, a single -1000 and two Q400s.

Nigerian virtual carrier Imo Air begins operations
Imo Air (Owerri) is a Nigerian virtual carrier that inaugurated scheduled commercial operations this past week.
Using MD-83 5N-SRI (msn 53020) chartered from Dana Air (9J, Lagos), Imo Air conducted its maiden flight - Lagos-Owerri, Imo State located in southeastern Nigeria.
Imo Air is owned by the Imo State government and aims to improve the region's connectivity with the rest of the country.
“We have five of these aircraft, and this is the first one that we have just acquired. We hope to go to a full blown carrier by 2018," the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, told Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper. "We have a partnership agreement with Dana, which spans about 10 years. We only gave them this aircraft for them to manage it for us because they are professional in the Nigerian aviation industry."
Aside from Imo Air, Owerri is connected to Lagos and Abuja by Air Peace (P4, Lagos), Arik Air (W3, Lagos), and Dana Air (9J, Lagos) itself.
For its part, Dana Air is involved in a number of provincial-level airlines. In September last year, it pledged to assist the government of Cross River in the establishment of Cally Air (Calabar).

Ruili Airlines applies to open international routes
China’s low-cost carrier (LCC) Ruili Airlines has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to open international routes.
Launched in 2004, the Kunming-based LCC operates 11 aircraft on 26 domestic routes with 66 daily departures. The carrier plans to expand its fleet to 40 aircraft by 2020 and to 80 by 2025.
In July 2016, Ruili finalized an order for six Boeing787-9s, paving the way for international expansion as China’s outbound passenger traffic continues to grow.
Industry analysts noted domestic carriers have reported declining yields on international routes resulting from overcapacity as more carriers open international routes—especially on service from Chinese secondary cities including Kunming, Xi’an and Xiamen. An industry source told ATW, “2017 would be a life and death year for these new intercontinental routes.”

Saratov Airlines has won a tender for transporting shift workers for Russian oil company Rosneft onboard of Antonov An-148 regional jets. This contract will keep Saratov ‘s aircraft busy for the next five years.
According to the tender information, the carrier will fly the employees of Rosneft’s subsidiary RN-Vankor from Krasnoyarsk and Tomsk to Igarka, one of the nearest points to Vankor oil field. The contract covers 893 flights from/to Krasnoyarsk and 192 flights from/to Tomsk through 2021. There’s no data as to how many aircraft will be engaged in the program.
According to tender terms, only An-148s or similar aircraft no older than 20 years in operation were liable for participation. Two more operators, Turukhan and Yamal submitted application for the competition.
The initial cost of the tender stood at 1.722 billion rubles ($29 million), and Saratov Airlines offered to render services for 1.633 billion rubles, less 5% from the initial cost.
Saratov Airlines currently operates two 83-seat An-148 jets formerly used by Rossiya Airlines and owned by Ilyushin Finance leasing company. It plans to sublease two more aircraft of the type this year. The third aircraft is expected to arrive in the first quarter. These aircraft will partially replace the morally obsolete YaK-42s in the operator’s fleet.

Flights on the 1,988-kilometre link from Calgary will be flown on a mixture of the airline's 737 fleet, while the 2,227-kilometre sector from Edmonton will be operated by the carrier's 737-800s.“Tourism is a vital part of our economy, and the Greater Phoenix area is home to hundreds of businesses that trade goods and services with Canada,” said Mesa Mayor John Giles, Chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. “Having direct international services to Calgary and Edmonton opens the door for additional economic opportunities for the Valley. In addition, these new flights offer the community easy access to Alberta’s tourism industry including some of the best skiing in North America." Phoenix-Mesa becomes WestJet's second gateway to Phoenix, with the airline already offering 55 weekly flights to the city's Sky Harbor Airport from eight Canadian destinations, including Calgary and Edmonton. The airline also launched a new Canadian domestic connection this week. On 17 January it began a three times weekly (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday) route between Hamilton (YHM) and Winnipeg (YWG). At 1,516 kilometres, and flown on WestJet's 737-700s, the airport pairing faces no incumbent.

Hainan Airlines Global's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner wearing "New Red Coat" for upcoming Chinese New Year.
As Chinese Lunar New Year approaching, Hainan Airlines unveiled a special all-red livery on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (B-6998) via its Weibo account on January 22.
The airline disclosed it's not the Dreamliner's final painting, without more details.
Chinese avgeeks commented under the Weibo post, guessing that the 787-9 Dreamliner will probably be painted with a Kung-Fu Panda livery.
In June 2016, Hainan Airlines reached a new collaboration with DreamWorks Animation to feature the "Kung Fu Panda" film franchise on six 787-9 Dreamliners, delivered in 2016-2017, which provides nonstop service between China and seven North American destinations.
MRJ delay confirmed; system revisions cited
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), the parent of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp., has made official a further two-year delay in the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) program.
MHI said Jan. 23 that the first delivery of the MRJ90 to Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) would be pushed back to mid-2020 from mid-2018, meaning first delivery will be nearly seven years later than what was planned in the program’s original timetable. Four MRJ90 flight test aircraft are currently flying, with a fifth slated to join flight testing this year, but the MRJ program—Japan’s reentry into commercial aircraft manufacturing for the first time since production on the NAMC YS-11 turboprop ended in 1974—has been beset by numerous delays over the years.
The latest delay is necessary because of “revisions to certain systems and electrical configurations on the aircraft to meet the latest requirements for certification,” MHI said in a Jan. 23 presentation to media, adding, “These design changes will not affect aircraft performance, fuel consumption or functionality of systems.”
MRJ90 certification is now targeted for the second half of 2019. MHI said Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. will “expand [the] involvement of global experts” in the MRJ program, adding that the company aims to achieve “world-class commercial aircraft development through integrated work between global and Japanese experts.”

Japan Air Commuter Co. Ltd. (JAC), subsidiary of Japan Airlines, became today a new ATR operator with the introduction into their fleet of the modern and eco-efficient ATR 42-600. Eight other aircraft will be delivered over the coming three years. JAC is currently undertaking an important fleet modernization process. Progressively, their nine new ATRs will start operations on both main routes and connections from and to smaller islands and communities across the country.
Japan is a mature, yet dynamic, market, with more than 100 regional aircraft and an average fleet age of over 10 years. Japanese airlines are expected to renew and expand their regional fleets in the years to come in order to face an increasing tourism across the country within the next years. Japan is expected to attract over 40 million tourists by 2020, and will host major events such as the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 or the Rugby World Cup in 2019.
Hiroki Kato, President of Japan Air Commuter Co. Ltd, declared: "The unrivalled airport accessibility of the ATRs, along with their high standards of safety and comfort, make the ATR -600s the perfect solution for our mission: connecting small communities and providing high-quality air service across the country."
Christian Scherer, ATR's Chief Executive Officer, highlighted "the suitability of the ATR -600s to generate business opportunities and strengthen community links". He added: "Our partnership with JAC demonstrates the capacity of our aircraft to deliver the high standard of comfort expected on one of the mature markets in the world."
The airline and ATR started their partnership at the last Paris Airshow, in 2015, with the signature of a contract for the introduction of ATR 42-600s in Japan. The deal represented a major milestone for ATR, bringing its firm order book to 1500 aircraft sold since the beginning of the programme.
