Air China Southwest Retires Fifth A340 Aircraft

An Air China (CA) A340 aircraft, Registration B-2389, will be on a ferry flight from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) to Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees Airport (LDE) in France on September 8, according to the carrier's Southwest branch.

The Beijing-based carrier ordered 100 Airbus A320 series medium-range single-aisle passenger jets in May 2013. As part of the transaction, the European aircraft manufacturer agreed to buy back six A340 series aircraft. The first of the six A340s was returned to Airbus in December 2013. The B-2389 is the fifth A340 the airline has sold to Airbus.

On Nov. 11, 1998, the B-2389 aircraft was delivered to China Southwest Airlines, which was merged into Air China in October 2002. It is also the airline's first A340-300 aircraft.

In recent years, the airline has introduced more advanced A330 aircraft to renew its fleet. The B-2389 aircraft was stored in June 2014, according to Airfleets.net.

The Southwest branch has made preparation for the retirement of the A340 and conducted a test flight to examine the performance of the aircraft on July 8.

The ferry flight will take off at 7:30 a.m. on September 8 with two captains in the cockpit, according to the airline
