Armenia Aircompany to launch flights to Western Europe

Armenia Aircompany (RM, Yerevan) will launch direct flights to Western Europe in conjunction with parent firm Georgian Airways (A9, Tbilisi) in April 2017, the company’s co-founder, Tamaz Gaiashvili, announced at a press conference last week.

Destinations will include London, Brussels National, Barcelona El Prat as well as Portugal with flights originating in Yerevan and transiting through Tbilisi.

“We faced many problems this year,” admitted Gaiashvili. The airline was unable to fly to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion after failing to secure permissions, and planned flights to Dubai Int'l also did not go ahead. Armenia Aircompany currently offers scheduled services to Mineralnye Vody, Moscow Vnukovo, and Tehran Imam Khomeini.

Flights to Moscow have been affected by capacity dumping by Ural Airlines (U6, Ekaterinburg) and Pobeda (DP, Moscow Vnukovo), according to CEO Robert Oganesian. He also complained about the unfair cost of access for the Armenian airline, saying that they pay more than other airlines for airport services.

“For example, if the price of the Russian air carrier to navigate is USD200 dollars, it is USD500 for us," Oganesian said.

The news of the European expansion comes on the same day that the European Council adopted a mandate to allow the European Commission to start negotiations on a comprehensive air transport agreement with Armenia.
