Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) is considering revising its widebody order book to reflect growing demand changes in the longhaul market. According to Bloomberg, Lufthansa Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr told staff in a meeting last week that the German carrier group may draw out its order with Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) for thirty-four B777-9s while favouring more A350-900s from Airbus.
“I’m not sure if we’ve really ordered enough A350s and possibly too many 777Xs,” Spohr said. “We must now think about either stretching the 777X in a deal with Boeing to let them come in more slowly, or increasing profitability to finance our overdue fleet investments.”
Lufthansa is the launch operator for the B777-9, due to enter into service in 2020.
During the same meeting, Spohr is said to have speculated about deploying an unspecified number of A350-900s to the Group's budget wing, Eurowings (EW, Dusseldorf).
Lufthansa ordered twenty-five A350-900s in 2013 of which three have thus far been delivered to its Munich hub. Eurowings is also looking at using the aircraft to develop long-haul operations out of Dusseldorf and Hamburg Helmut Schmidt to compliment its current Cologne/Bonn gateway.
A decision on the new delivery timelines is “urgent” and could be reached by September, the CEO added.
