Mexico temporarily bans business with Calafia Airlines

The Mexican government has banned all state-owned entities from entering into new business contracts with Calafia Airlines (A7, San José Cabo) for a period of six months and has also fined the carrier.

Existing contracts and those currently being formalised are excluded from the prohibition, according to a notice in the government gazette on August 15.

All federal and state entities have been ordered to refrain from entering into new commercial contracts with the airline for six months starting August 16. This includes new proposals or any contract relating to acquisitions, leases, services, public works, and related services with Calafia Airlines directly or through an intermediary.

Should the airline not pay the fine before the six-month ban expires, the prohibition will continue until the penalty is settled, the notice read.

The government did not clarify the reasons for its decision, and the airline was not immediately available for comment.

Founded in 1993, Calafia Airlines is based in the resort city of San José del Cabo, on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. It was re-branded from Aéreo Calafia in 2016 as part of a commercial expansion aimed at greater international exposure. The carrier services the Baja California Peninsula and the Mexican Pacific coast, in addition to charter flights and tours.

Its all Embraer regional jet fleet comprises two EMB-120ERs, three EMB-145ERs, and one EMB-145LR, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module reveals. It owns half of the E-145s, with at least one leased from Embraer Netherlands.
