According to a report from Flightglobal, sources familiar with the program say the 777X could be handed over to the first customer late in 2019, rather than in 2020 as previously planned.
Boeing, for its part, said the previous timeline remains unchanged.
Whenever the plane does arrive on the market, it will be with an assist from Wichita, where Spirit AeroSystems Inc. builds the forward fuselage and other components on the 777 line. Spirit has work on all Boeing commercial programs.
While Boeing is sticking with its original timeline, it wouldn’t be unusual for it to come out ahead of schedule on the variant version of the aircraft.
Another variant, the 737 MAX, will reportedly be ready as much as six months ahead of the company’s original schedule, which calls for first delivery to launch customer Southwest Airlines in the third quarter of 2017.
Boeing completed firm configuration for the the 777X in the middle of last year, saying at the time that production would begin in 2017.
The 777X-8, at a list price of $371 million, will seat 350 to 375 passengers. The 777X-9, at $400 million at list prices, will seat 400 to 425 passengers.
Boeing says the aircraft which will include new carbon-fiber composite wings, will burn 12 percent less fuel and be 10 percent cheaper to operate that competing aircraft.
