Airbus welcomes A380 operations in India

Airbus welcomes the news that the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation has approved the operations of the Airbus A380 in India.

“This is good news for Indian airports and the Indian flying public. The A380 is the world’s most fuel efficient aircraft in service with the lowest operating costs per seat and the highest revenue generating potential which benefits the airlines and the travelling public. For the Indian flying public, the A380 offers the world’s most comfortable flying experience,” said Dr. Kiran Rao, Airbus EVP Strategy and Marketing.
A booming economy, a growing middle classe, migration, urbanisation and tourism are all factors pushing India to become one of the world’s fastest growing aviation markets. Larger aircraft like the A380 combined with higher load factors make the most efficient use of limited airport slots and contribute to rising passenger numbers without additional flights to capture this growth.

As recently confirmed by London’s Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest A380 airport, the Airbus A380 lets airports maximise efficiency and revenue potential by offering more passenger seats with the same number of flights.

The A380 is the world’s quietest large aircraft inside and out, making less than half the noise of its nearest rival around airports. In recognition of this, in 2012 the A380 won an award from the UK’s Noise Abatement Society for its quiet operations. It is also one of the greenest aircraft, with unmatched fuel efficiency.

So far, over 120 A380s have been delivered to 10 of the world’s leading airlines. Over 50 million passengers have enjoyed the A380 flying experience and the fleet has accumulated some 150,000 flights and over 1.2 million flight hours. The A380 has visited nearly 160 airports of all sizes and in all continents of the world.

PAL to launch Haneda servisse

Philippine Airlines (PAL) will start flying to Haneda twice a day starting March 30, 2014, complementing its thrice a day service to Narita thus providing better options and convenience for travelers to and from Japan.

Haneda, also known as Tokyo International Airport, is one of the two premier airports servicing the Greater Tokyo Area. It is considered the world’s most slot-restrictive airport and a prime business hub.

It becomes PAL’s fifth gateway to Japan – following Narita, Fukuoka, Osaka and Nagoya – making the flag carrier the biggest Philippine operator to and from Japan with 47 flights a week.

PAL currently operates 21 weekly flights to Narita, 5 times a week to Fukuoka, 7 to Nagoya and 7 to Osaka.

PAL President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon S. Ang said “The new service makes PAL the exclusive operator on the Haneda-Manila route. This route forms part of PAL’s network expansion aimed at providing our passengers more and better choices.”

Haneda airport, which is around 30 minutes from the Tokyo metropolis, has one domestic and two international passenger terminals and connects conveniently to the Tokyo monorail.

Along with the route expansion, PAL is upgrading its inflight menu with the introduction of Bento Box meals on all flights to and from Japan.

The new inflight menu, designed and prepared by the airline’s experienced culinary team, provides passengers a wider selection of Japanese dishes to choose from.

The flag carrier is expanding its presence in Japan in response to a strong market demand even as PAL continues to reinforce its warm and hospitable inflight service. Japan provides a significant passenger market to the Philippines being the third biggest source of tourist visitors to the country. In 2012 alone, Japanese tourist arrivals reached 412,000. The country is also a prime tourist destination for Filipinos, with its trend-setting culture, superb cuisine, and historical sites.

LCC start-up, Air Pegasus, eyes southern Indian market initially

Air Pegasus (Bangalore Int'l) is once more looking to launch services, this time using a fleet of three ATR72 turboprops.
The Low Cost Carrier will initially connect Bangalore Int'l with Hyderabad Int'l, Chennai, Kochi Int'l, Thiruvananthapuram, Hubli, Mangalore, Goa, Tirupati and Vishakhapatnam.
We would also move into north with a hub in Delhi Int'l ultimately," Thomas said. In the longterm, should government scrap the country's current embargo on allowing start-ups to operate internationally in their first five years, then Pegasus intends to operate routes such as Thiruvananthapuram to Malé and Kolkata to Dhaka.

Transasia Airways reveals name of its new Taiwanese LCC as V air

TransAsia Airways has announced that its nascent Low Cost subsidiary with be called "V air" while its Chinese name will be “Wei Hang” ('mighty airline' in English).

In a statement, TransAsia said it picked V air out of nearly 8'000 entries in a public naming contest. “V can stand for voyage, vision, vivid, or victory which symbolise the positive energy a new company requires and can help boost the public’s preference and acceptance of the new company,” it said. Backed by TWD3billion (USD100million), V air is expected to launch before year end using two or three leased A320/A321s and will go head to head with the new China Airlines (CI, Taipei Taoyuan)-Tigerair (TR, Singapore Changi) joint venture, Tigerair Taiwan (Taipei Taoyuan), which is also planning to launch this year.

Spring Airlines bucks industry trend with 10% profit growth

Spring Airlines staff pose in front of an A320 in Tianjin to mark the receipt of the airline's first purchase of the model from Airbus, March 10, 2010. (Photo/Xinhua)

At a time when most airlines have seen profit declines due to restricted business flight demand, Spring Airlines, China's only budget airline, reversed the downtrend to see profit growth of around 10% last year, Shanghai-based China Business News reports.

In 2013, total profits in China's airline industry reached 27.3 billion yuan (US$4.5 billion), down 7.7% from 29.6 billion yuan (US$4.9 billion) a year earlier, while Spring Airlines, which owns 40 aircraft, enjoyed a profit growth of about 10%.
In 2013, amid slowing economic growth and the government's anti-corruption campaign, which restricts business trips, the nation's airlines, which had seen prosperous profit growth in the past, suffered profit declines.

Spring Airlines, headquartered in Shanghai, is the aviation subsidiary of Shanghai Spring International Travel Service. It is China's only no-frills airline.

The rising restrictions on business trips and, consequently, business flights, has given new opportunities for Spring Airlines. "The passenger volume of China's market is still growing, and more and more clients are choosing low-cost budget airlines," said Spring Airlines spokesman Zhang Wuan.

Zhang said that more and more of Hebei's government officials have chosen Spring Airlines when taking either business trips or private trips, while among the airline's customers, about 75% are young adults aged under 30.

Spring Airlines has offered ticket prices about 36% lower than other airlines, giving them a higher seat occupancy rate, standing at around 95% on average, which has helped boost the airline's profits.

Spring Airlines has gone to great lengths to reduce costs, in an effort led by its chairman Wang Zhenghua.
The airline has been actively exploring new markets, setting up international routes to Southeast Asia in 2013, and cutting routes if they are not profitable after a certain period of time.

Zhang said the airline now relies on business tourists and private tour clients, while group travel clients account for less than 15% of passengers.
Spring Airlines is facing more and more competition, however, as several traditional airlines such as Hainan Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have made moves to set up budget airline divisions or are studying the feasibility of a move into the market.
Budget airlines have expanded in other countries much faster than in China. The Philippines, for example, has seen its budget airlines taking more than 80% of its domestic airline market, while Thailand is expected to increase its budget airlines market share to more than 50% within three to five years.

Boeing Rolls Out First 787 Dreamliner at Increased Production Rate Program achieves 10 per month rate, highest ever production for a twin-aisle airplane

EVERETT, Wash., Jan. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) has rolled out the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner built at the rate of 10 airplanes per month. The airplane, a 787-8 and the 155th Dreamliner built, will be delivered to International Lease Finance Corp. for operation by Aeromexico.

The new 10 per month rate is the highest ever for a twin-aisle airplane. The 787 program has now increased its production rate three times in just over a year, including to five airplanes per month in November 2012 and seven per month in May 2013.

"This rate increase reflects the continued strong demand for the 787," said Larry Loftis, vice president and general manager, 787 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "A disciplined approach that combined employee teamwork with technology was key to achieving the higher rate."

Boeing assembles and delivers 787s in two locations: Everett, Wash., and North Charleston, S.C.

"The entire 787 team is now focused on capturing efficiencies at this historic level of production, as well as meeting our commitment to increase the production rate to 12 per month in 2016 and to 14 per month by the end of the decade," Loftis said.

To date, 115 787s have been delivered to 16 customers. The program has 1,030 total orders from 60 customers worldwide.
This airplane will be the fourth 787 operated by Aeromexico and will be used on the airline's Mexico City - London Heathrow route.

Aeromexico Increases Seating Capacity from Madrid by 25%, Adds the Boeing 787 to Fleet

Aeromexico, Mexico’s biggest airline, against the backdrop of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR – Feria Internacional de Turismo), is announcing the addition of three weekly night flights on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

With the arrival of this new aircraft, the airline will meet the demand of the Spanish market, offering 243 seats – 32 in First Class with 180-degree reclining – with more space between seats, new individual entertainment systems and an improvement in cabin pressurization, among other features.

Through the 10 weekly flights that Aeromexico will now be offering between Madrid and Mexico City (7 of them on Boeing 777 aircraft, and 3 on Boeing 787′s), the airline will be providing nearly 5,400 seats between the two capital cities. The night schedule for the new flights will facilitate connectivity for passengers to more than 40 destinations in Mexico, 17 in the United States, 12 in Latin America and one in Canada.

In keeping with this trend, and with Aeromexico’s commitment to the European market, it will be making a point of providing its services with the world’s most modern aircraft.

Sergio Allard, Executive Commercial Director of the airline, said: “We are aware that the arrival of the Boeing 787 to all of our European destinations – Madrid, London and Paris – less than one year after introducing it to our fleet, will revolutionize our customers’ travel experience.”

Starting in May, passengers from the United Kingdom will be able to enjoy the benefits of the new Boeing 787. With this addition, Aeromexico will be increasing by some 30 percent its offering of seats between London Heathrow International Airport and Mexico City.

Since October of 2013, Mexico’s global airline has been operating seven weekly night flights from Paris with the Boeing 787.

With this news, Aeromexico is consolidating its position as the only airline to unite Europe and Mexico with the world’s most modern aircraft, as it continues its plan for fleet renewal and increase of world class services for the benefit of its customers.

Bombardier Aerospace’s Latest Delivery to Horizon Air Brings Fleet to More Than 50 Q400 Aircraft

Addition of the 51st aircraft to fleet solidifies Horizon Air’s standing as the world’s largest Q400 aircraft operator
Airline to begin operations in the state of Alaska on March 3, 2014

Bombardier Aerospace and Horizon Air today celebrated the delivery of the airline’s 51st Q400 turboprop airliner in Portland, Oregon. The aircraft, which is a NextGen model, is the last of three ordered by Horizon Air in June last year, solidifying the airline’s position as the world’s largest operator of Q400 aircraft.

To recognize the delivery, a Bombardier delegation comprised of key team members who support the Q400 aircraft program, journeyed to Portland to participate in the celebration along with Horizon Air’s employees. The 51st aircraft, which provided a backdrop for the event, bares a special “people-powered” livery that includes the signatures of Horizon Air employees.

“Horizon Air has extensive experience with Bombardier’s Q-Series aircraft, having ordered some 100 since 1985,” said Glenn Johnson, President, Horizon Air. “Since then our operation has grown significantly to serve 39 destinations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. As we expand our service into the state of Alaska this year, we look to the Q400 NextGen aircraft’s versatility, speed and comfort to provide a seamless experience for our customers.”
Johnson said the three new Q400 NextGen aircraft will allow the airline to begin operations in the state of Alaska on March 3, 2014, with daily flights between Anchorage and Fairbanks, and Anchorage and Kodiak. Horizon Air flies on behalf of Alaska Airlines and is a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group.

“For almost 20 years, our relationship with Horizon Air has strengthened and grown, and we are proud that these most recent deliveries to the airline – one of the most successful North American regional carriers – will solidify its status as the world’s largest operator of Q400 aircraft,” said Mike Arcamone, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We’re confident that Horizon Air will continue to successfully showcase the flexibility and adaptability of the Q400 aircraft as it operates within the geographically diverse Alaskan landscape.”

Horizon Air’s Q400 aircraft are equipped with Head-up Guidance Systems (HGS) for all-weather operations, Wide Area Augmentation Systems (WAAS) with approach guidance (LPV) for ILS-like landing minima at remote runways and RNP AR 0.3 to fly curved approaches to airports in difficult terrain. The unmatched capability to land and take off on challenging runways in unsettled weather is another benefit of the Q400 aircraft.
Established in 1981, Horizon Air was acquired in 1986 by Alaska Air Group, Inc., the parent company of Alaska Airlines. At its start, the airline operated two aircraft and served three destinations in Washington state.
As of today, Bombardier has booked firm orders for 480 Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft.

Finnish start-up, Snowbird Airlines, to launch with Summer charter ops

Snowbird Airlines has revised its launch plans and is now looking to commence operations this Summer. According to YLE, the start-up, staffed by various ex-Air Finland  executives, is now planning to operate charter flights from provincial Finnish airports to the Mediterranean on behalf of tour operators. Original plans to serve Gazipasa, Turkey have now been dropped owing to market saturation said chief executive Marja Aalto. “We will start with the help of a cooperation partner so that we can begin with a rather light programme and won’t need to have our own plane to fill a certain number of flights from the very beginning,” she said. Local tour operators say that poor connections to northern Finnish airports limit inbound travel to the north. During the next winter season, Snowbird plans to bring vacationers directly from central Europe. The airline's first aircraft, an A320-200, is expected in Europe in the next 6 months.

Hong Kong Express Introduces New Corporate Identity Following Low-Cost Rebrand

The unveiling of a new corporate identity this week marks the final stage of what has been a rapid transformation of Asian airline Hong Kong Express Airways (HK Express) from a full-service operator to a low-cost carrier in less than a year. With almost ten years of experience in the aviation business, the carrier, part of the HNA Group and a sister operation to Hainan Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines, has been reinvented to better meet the demands of the local market and enable the group to better compete in the emerging low-cost sector in Hong Kong.
The existing branding of Hong Kong Express is near identical to its sister carrier Hong Kong Airlines.
HK Express currently operates a fleet of five Airbus A320 aircraft with seating for up to 174 passengers. There are plans to increase the fleet by a further six aircraft this year and negotiations are currently taking place to finalise the acquisition of these additional aircraft. This will be just the first stage of expansion which will ultimately see the fleet grow to over 30 A320s by 2018.
The new Hong Kong Express logo and corporate identity was unveiled on January 21, 2014 and will be rolled out from March 2014.

Ethiopian Airlines plans order for 10-20 narrowbody jets - CEO

DUBLIN, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Ethiopian Airlines is looking at placing an order for 10-20 narrowbody jets, its chief executive told Reuters on Monday. Such an order would be worth $1-2 billion at list prices.

Ethiopian will probably study proposals from Boeing, Airbus and Canada's Bombardier, a new entrant to the market for roughly 150-seat aircraft, Tewolde Gebremariam said.

The airline, which plans to increase its revenues five-fold to $10 billion by 2025, is separately evaluating Boeing's latest wide-body jet, the 406-seat 777X, but has no immediate plans to place an order, he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of an Airlines Economics conference in Dublin, he also downplayed concerns over the Boeing 787 Dreamliner following new glitches on the high-tech jet which was grounded over battery problems last year.

A Japan Airlines (JAL) Boeing 787 Dreamliner was grounded last week after white smoke vented from the plane and a battery cell showed signs of melting.

"We've never had any problems with the batteries," Gebremariam said. Ethiopian operates five Dreamliners.

An Ethiopian 787 which caught fire at London's Heathrow last year resumed service last month without any penalty in performance following repairs to its carbon-fibre fuselage, he said.

The fire has been widely linked to small batteries in an emergency beacon but UK authorities have yet to publish their official on the incident.

Gebremariam said load factors, or the proportion of seats sold, had increased when Ethiopian put the 787 on new routes, such as Frankfurt and London.

Airbus delivers the 1,000th aircraft to China

Airbus has delivered the 1,000th Airbus aircraft to China. This milestone was reached in December 2013 with the hand over of an A320 to Air China .

Airbus delivered its first jetliner to China in 1985, but the fleet grew slowly for the first decade. Deliveries to Chinese customers now account for over 20 per cent of total Airbus production and, according to forecasts, 170 aircraft per year will be delivered from 2014 to 2020.
