Enerjet (EG, Calgary) has renamed its tentative ULCC project from Jet Naked (Calgary), to FlyToo (Calgary). Conceived of in 2014, the FlyToo project entails using a trio of B737s to run budget flights throughout Canada. No timeframes concerning certification and launch have yet been given.
Other competing entrants into the Canadian LCC market include: Jetlines (Vancouver Int'l) and NewLeaf Airways (Winnipeg Int'l) (partnering Flair Airlines (F8, Kelowna)).Start-up carriers have petitioned Justin Trudeau's government to relax laws capping foreign ownership of local commercial airlines from the current 25% to 49%. According to the Financial Post, a sweeping review of the Canada Transportation Act, tabled in Parliament last month, includes a recommendation that the limit be lifted in a bid to lure in capital needed to sustain operations in the difficult Canadian market.
