Nok Air to Fly to Taiwan Next Month

Taiwan's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) recently confirmed that Thailand's Nok Air (DD) has officially filed an application to launch a four-time-weekly scheduled service linking Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) with Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) starting Sep. 26. This will be the 19th low-cost carrier (LCC) introduced in Taiwan.

LCCs firstly entered into Taiwan's civil aviation market in 2004, currently linking Taiwan with Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand. Local LCCs are V Air (ZV) and Tigerair (IT).

Nok Air currently operates a fleet of 24 aircraft to 24 domestic and four international destinations. The fleet currently consists of 18 737-800s in 189-seat single class configuration, four 86-seat Dash 8 Q400 turboprops and two 66-seat ATR 72-500s.

Taiwan is a relatively small but growing source market for Thailand's tourism sector. Thailand reported a 57% increase in visitors from Taiwan in May of 2015 to 50,000. Taiwan also is starting to emerge as a popular destination for Thais.

At present LCCs occupy up to 9.2% of Taiwan's civil aviation market. With the joining of Nok Air, the proportion is expected to lift at a large scale.
