China Southern Airlines (CZ) started flying its Airbus A380 Superjumbo from Beijing to Amsterdam today, marking the first European gateway that the Guangzhou-based carrier serves with an A380.
The inaugural A30 service flight CZ345 took off from Beijing at 1:16 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive in Amsterdam at 4:39 a.m., with the return flight CZ346 departing Amsterdam at 2:50 p.m. and arriving in Beijing at 6:20 a.m. the next day, according to VeryZhun, China's leading flight status service provider.
The Guangzhou-based carrier launched Beijing-Amsterdam service using Boeing 777 in November 1996, marking the first time the airline has flew in Europe. In March 2011, China southern deployed A330-300 aircraft on the route.
From June 20 to October 24, China Southern operates the daily Superjumbo service on Beijing-Amsterdam, to meet growing travel demand in the summer season. The switch to an A380 means a 50% increase in capacity - 229 more seats per day on the 10-hour flights.
Meanwhile, China Southern has also announced that it will deploy its A380 on a domestic route from Beijing to Chengdu on July 1.
China Southern operates a fleet of five A380s, all of which come equipped with eight private suites in first class, 70 flat beds in business class and 428 seats in economy.
The only Chinese airline currently operating the A380, China Southern deploys the aircraft on its routes from Guangzhou to Beijing, Sydney and Los Angeles, and from Beijing to Shenzhen.
