Mitsubishi Aircraft loses MRJ order after Eastern acquisition Jan 26, 2018

The acquisition of US carrier Eastern Air Lines by charter operator Swift Air in 2017 has resulted in Mitsubishi Aircraft losing an order for 20 MRJ regional jets. The order had to be canceled because Eastern returned its air operator’s certificate to the FAA, Mitsubishi Aircraft said. The move also wipes out 20 purchase rights the carrier held. The contract was for the MRJ90 version, designed to seat 88 passengers in an all-economy configuration.

A350-1000 begins demonstration tour in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific

The A350-1000, the newest member of Airbus’ leading widebody family, has embarked on a three-week demonstration tour to the Middle East and Asia-Pacific region.

The demonstration tour follows the completion of a successful flight test campaign, which lasted less than one year and culminated in joint EASA and FAA type certifications, demonstrating the aircraft’s excellent design, performance and maturity. The A350-1000 tour comes ahead of the first customer delivery to Qatar Airways in the coming weeks.

During the tour, the A350-1000 flight test aircraft (MSN065) will visit 12 destinations to demonstrate the aircraft’s exclusive features to airlines. The itinerary will see it travel over 30,000 nautical miles / 55,500 kilometres, with stops in Doha, Muscat, Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, Hanoi, Singapore, Bangkok, Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo and Manila.

The aircraft will stop for several days in Singapore, where it will be on static display from 6 to 8 February at the Singapore Airshow 2018.

MSN065 is one of three Airbus A350-1000 test aircraft and is equipped with a fully functional cabin (40 business class, 36 economy plus class and 219 comfort economy class seats). The demonstration flights will be operated by Airbus flight test crews.

The A350-1000 is the latest member of the A350 XWB Family, showing high level of commonality with the A350-900 with 95 percent common systems part numbers and the same Type Rating. As well as having a longer fuselage to accommodate 40 more passengers than the A350-900 (in a typical three-class configuration), the A350-1000 also features a modified wing trailing-edge, new six-wheel main landing gears and more powerful Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines. Along with the A350-900, the A350-1000 is shaping the future of air travel by offering unprecedented levels of efficiency and unrivalled comfort in its ‘Airspace’ cabin. With its additional capacity, the A350-1000 is perfectly tailored for some of the busiest long-haul routes. To date, 11 customers from five continents have placed orders for a total of 169 A350-1000s.

QANTAS ANNOUNCES SPECIAL INDIGENOUS AIRCRAFT LIVERY

Qantas will honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with a special livery on its newest Dreamliner to enter the fleet.

This will be the fifth design in Qantas’ flying art series, which started more than 20 years ago, and will be unveiled when the Boeing 787-9 is completed next month. It will be the second flying art aircraft currently in service with the national carrier and the only one dedicated to international flights.

The unique livery reflects the long, rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and is in keeping with the airline’s commitment to championing reconciliation and promoting the best of Australia to the world.

The latest design has been conceptualised by leading Indigenous owned design studio Balarinji, which has developed all of the flying art aircraft.

The new Dreamliner carrying the special livery (registration VH-ZND) is the fourth to enter the fleet, and will be welcomed into Australia with a special arrival event in Alice Springs in early March 2018 before entering service on routes like Melbourne-Los Angeles and Perth-London.

KEY FACTS

To date, five Qantas aircraft have been painted in Indigenous designs, with Wunala Dreaming carried on two separate aircraft (see summary of each below).
Each livery has been designed in collaboration with Balarinji design studio.
Qantas has worked with Balarinji for three decades on aircraft livery projects and other design work, including the Peter Morrissey uniform of 2003.

Wunala Dreaming

Inspired by the natural colours of Australia, Wunala Dreaming of the Yanyuwa people from the Gulf of Carpentaria, celebrated the reproduction of all living things in the continuing harmony of nature’s seasons.
This artwork was carried on two different B747-400 aircraft (VH-OJB 1994-2003, and VH-OEJ 2003 – 2011).

Nalanji Dreaming
Nalanji, meaning ‘Our Place’, was a celebration of the balance and harmony of nature in Australia and reflected the lush colour palette of tropical Australia.
This artwork appeared on a Qantas 747-300 (VH-EBU) from 1995 until the aircraft was retired in 2005.

Yananyi Dreaming Using vibrant colours, Yananyi Dreaming by Rene Kulitja depicted the dramatic landscape surrounding Uluru. Pathways lead to the symbol of Uluru which was illustrated as both a physical form, and as an abstract representation of concentric circles.
Yananyi Dreaming was illustrated on a 737aircraft (VH-VXB) in 2002.

Mendoowoorrji
Inspired by the work of late West Australian Aboriginal painter, Paddy Bedford, Mendoowoorrji is an interpretation of the 2005 painting ‘Medicine Pocket’ which captures the essence of Mendoowoorrji, Bedford’s mother’s country in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Mendoowoorrji was delivered to Qantas in 2013, taking over 950-man hours to complete over a five-day period. The 737-800 (VH-XZJ) remains in service with Qantas.

Taliban attack claims Kam Air expat crew lives; suspends ops

Kam Air (RQ, Kabul) has partially suspended operations after nine of its crew were shot dead during a Taliban attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in the in Bagh-e-Bala area of Kabul this past weekend that killed over twenty people.
The Afghan carrier's chief executive, Samadi Osman Samadi, told Deutsche Welle on Monday that 40 Kam Air staff were present in the hotel at the time the attack took place, many of them crew.
"Of the employees that were crew, nine of them were killed, including seven from Ukraine and the other two from Venezuela," he said.
Samadi said that given the psychological impact of the attack, the carrier has had to partially suspend operations with 15 of its usual 30 daily flights having been cancelled as of Monday, January 22.
"All of this is not good psychologically. A large number of them [those killed] were flight attendants, so a number of our flights will be cancelled," he said adding that it would take a long time for things to return to normal.
Kam Air operates an active fleet of one A340-300, one MD-83, two MD-87s, one B737-300 and two B737-500s (wet-leased from Ukrainian Wings), and two Saab 340Bs (wet-leased from Ukrainian operator Air Urga).
Volodymyr Kostenko, a director of Ukrainian Wings, told Reuters in a statement that four of its staff, two women and two men, were among those killed and that it would recall all of its remaining personnel still in Afghanistan.

Qatar Airways maiden A350-1000 delayed to mid-1Q18

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) Chief Executive Officer (COE) Akbar al Baker has
confirmed the carrier has delayed delivery of its first A350-1000 until February.

As the A350-1000's launch operator, the Qatari airline had been expected to add its first aircraft of the type by the end of 2017. However, speaking in Doha, al Baker said the current delay was caused by the installation of the ‘Qsuite' in business class which was taking longer than expected. The “complex seat configuration” has had also had implications on the certification of the aircraft, he added.
“We will be taking delivery of this aircraft next month,” he was quoted by Reuters.

Qatar Airways has thirty-seven A350-1000s on order from Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac). It already operates twenty-two A350-900s.
