NEW AIRLINE - Basra Airlines launches operations with arrival of first aircraft named Shatt Al-Arab

Basra – Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani received the first aircraft of the newly formed Basra Airlines on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. The arrival of the plane, which has been named “Shatt Al-Arab,” marks the official launch of the new carrier, which will use Basra International Airport as its center of operations.

Governor Al-Eidani described the event as a “long-awaited dream” for many citizens of the city. The new airline is expected to open up wide prospects for Basra by providing direct links to the global aviation map, further cementing the city’s strategic importance as a hub for trade and transport, which is also home to the massive Grand Faw Port project. The establishment of Basra Airlines is seen as a key step in strengthening the province’s economic independence and its role in Iraq’s overall development strategy.

Céleste (Morlaix) – the French regional startup founded in 2021 but has never operated any commercial flights

Céleste received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) a year ago. It secured 500,000 euros ($543,000) in start-up support from the city of Brest and acquired its first CRJ1000ER in November, but its launch has been repeatedly delayed due to delays in obtaining its operating license. In March, Céleste publicly expressed its frustration with these regulatory delays, warning of potential job losses, stalled economic growth and loss of local market share if it failed to begin operations soon.

Céleste intended to provide direct flights from Brest Bretagne to Paris Orly and Nice, in line with European Union efforts to increase air connectivity and economic development in the northwest of the French peninsula.

NEW AIRLINE - Céleste unveils livery

At the end of last month, French start-up Céleste unveiled its corporate image and website in preparation for its official launch. The airline also received its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) on 24 March 2023, clearing the way for the airline to start commercial flights. It will soon take delivery of its first aircraft, CRJ1000 F-HMLA (19004), which is currently at Ljubljana for maintenance.

Céleste is based at Morlaix and is trying to jump in the gap that Hop! left behind when it left the airport. The airline is founded by a former manager of Vueling and wants to connect Bretagne with Paris-Orly. It has been started back in September 2021 but the actual launch was delayed for more than a year due to the final effects of the pandemic.
