ORDER - Air Astana finalises order for 25 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft

Air Astana Group, the leading airline group in Central Asia and the Caucasus regions by revenue and fleet size, has signed a firm order for 25 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, the largest ever direct order by the group. The agreement was made on the 20th anniversary since Air Astana started operating its first A320 in 2006, and includes five A320neo and 20 A321neo aircraft.

“Air Astana’s large order for a new fleet of Airbus A320neo Family aircraft reflects a commitment to maintaining its reputation for operational efficiency and service excellence in the long term,” said Peter Foster, CEO of Air Astana. “The Airbus A320neo Family has proven to be an outstanding success in service with Air Astana over many years. In particular, the A321LR in its premium configuration allows us to offer what we believe is the world’s best narrow-body long-haul product, combining true long-range capability with an exceptional onboard experience. I’m confident that the new fleet will continue to boost sustainable growth and profitability in the long term.”

Air Astana Group will deploy the new aircraft with both Air Astana and its low-cost subsidiary FlyArystan as part of the overall fleet expansion and renewal. Currently the group operates a fleet of 59 Airbus A320 Family aircraft.

“This order further validates the unmatched economics and market appeal of the A320neo Family in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business. “We are pleased to support Air Astana’s vision to connect Kazakhstan to the world. This deal solidifies a decades-long bond, ensuring they continue to set the regional gold standard for fleet modernisation, operational excellence and passenger experience.”

The A320 Family is the world’s most popular single-aisle aircraft having won more than 19,000 orders globally. The Family includes the largest member, the A321neo offering unparalleled range and performance. The Family offers at least 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximising passenger comfort with one of the widest single-aisle cabins in the sky.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A320 Family is able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030.

SPECIAL COLOURS - Lufthansa flies in historic parable design

Iconic appearance of a legendary super star on Airbus A321
Planned arrival of the aircraft today at around 2:45 p.m. at Frankfurt Airport
XXL crane on blue Airbus A350 at Munich hub

To mark the 100th anniversary of Lufthansa's founding, another specially painted aircraft is expected in Frankfurt today: an Airbus A321-200 was painted in Norwich, England, in the design of the legendary Lockheed Super Star and will fly from there to Germany's largest airport under flight number LH9898. The short- and medium-haul aircraft with the registration D-AISZ is expected to arrive in Frankfurt at around 2:45 p.m.

The Airbus A321 now bears the historic Lufthansa parable design. It was introduced in the mid-1950s and was inspired by the streamlined trend of the 1930s. It was intended to signal dynamism, speed, and a forward-looking approach. The parable line was not only visible on the aircraft's tail fins, but also on baggage tags, business documents, flight schedules, and even cigar bands.

Almost 70 years after its maiden flight for Lufthansa, this iconic parable design can once again be seen in the skies. In 1957, the Super Star joined the Lufthansa fleet. Its special feature: this aircraft was the first to offer Senator Class, the most exclusive way to travel at the time. Its main focus was the non-stop connection to New York across the North Atlantic. A restored Lockheed L-1649A Super Star will soon be on display alongside a Junkers Ju 52 in the new Lufthansa Group Hangar One. The conference and visitor center at Frankfurt Airport will open in April.

AIRLINE - Iceland's PLAY game overs with bankruptcy filing

PLAY (Iceland) (OG, Reykjavik Keflavik) has filed for bankruptcy at Reykjavík District Court, shortly after suddenly halting its flight operations on September 29, 2025. Innherji, a local business news website, reported that bondholders have been trying to relocate the carrier's entire fleet to still-active Maltese subsidiary PLAY Europe (FPE, Malta International), but at least some of them appear to have been repossessed.

The court appointed a trustee on September 30, following a hearing launching the airline's bankruptcy. The Icelandic carrier plans to hold a meeting with creditors in the first week of October.

The representatives of the investors, who bought bonds worth ISK2.8 billion Icelandic króna (USD23.1 million) priced at 17.5% per year earlier this year, are now in talks with the executives and lessors concerning the transfer of the six A320-200Ns remaining on the Icelandic AOC. ch-aviation data shows that four are leased from AerCap and two from CALC.

While initial reports have suggested that the aircraft could be transferred to the Maltese entity even before the first meeting of creditors takes place, ch-aviation research shows that three AerCap-owned A320-200Ns, TF-PPD (msn 7576), TF-PPE (msn 11123), and TF-PPF (msn 11344), were ferried to Toulouse Francazal on September 30. The other three A320s remain parked, one each at Reykjavik Keflavik, Paris CDG, and London Stansted, where they were when the grounding was announced.

The airline previously transferred its three A321-200Ns and one A321-200NX to PLAY Europe. The Maltese subsidiary, which is wholly owned by the Icelandic carrier, continued operations on behalf of SkyUp MT on September 30, a day after its parent stopped all flights. However, ADS-B data shows that all three of its active aircraft (two A321-200Ns and one A321-200NX) were ferried to Toulouse Francazal on September 30. The fourth aircraft, A321-200N 9H-PED (msn 7945), remains under maintenance at Ostrava and has never operated under its Maltese registration.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir told local media that the airline's decision to suspend all flight operations had surprised her. Even though she was aware of PLAY's strained financial situation, she expected the carrier to continue until at least the end of the year. She added, however, that given the airline's recent downsizing and the overall strength of the Icelandic economy, the collapse will have a less detrimental effect on the country than that of WOW air in March 2019.

SPECIAL LIVERY - Eurowings Holidays flies the “world’s fastest glasses”

Airbus A321neo now flying in special livery for tour operator

Flying ambassador promotes flexible holiday packages from a single source
Mallorca still the number one vacation destination in summer 2025
‘Mallorca shuttle’: 400 flights per week to PMI from 26 airports in Europe
Palma is Eurowings' largest base outside Germany with eight aircraft stationed there

Eurowings Holidays, the growing tour operator of Germany's largest leisure airline, has a new flying ambassador: an Airbus A321neo is now flying with XXL sunglasses perched oversized on the nose of the aircraft's cockpit. The ‘world's fastest sunglasses’ advertise Eurowings Holidays' attractive vacation packages on flights and at airports throughout Europe. The tour operator, which Eurowings spun off as a separate company in spring 2025, is set to undergo significant expansion and is expected to become one of the industry's ‘top 10’ players.

It is no coincidence that an Airbus A321neo was chosen for the special livery. With more than 230 seats, the aircraft with the registration number ‘D-AEEA’ is the perfect choice for Eurowings' ‘Mallorca shuttle’. It is primarily used for flights to the Balearic Islands to meet the high demand for non-stop flights to Europe's most popular vacation destination. The Airbus A321neo is one of the most efficient and quiet jets in the world. During the 2025 summer holidays, the longest and largest medium-range Airbus once again flew many thousands of travel-loving passengers on holiday. Eurowings connects the island's capital, Palma, with 26 airports across Europe up to 400 times a week.

‘We fly over 20 million people on holiday every year. As Germany's largest leisure airline, we felt it was only logical to give one of our aircraft a suitable vacation-ready look,’ says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. "From now on, our A321neo will fly with XXL sunglasses – so that our guests not only reach their destination quickly, but also look really cool while doing so. Going forward, the motto at Eurowings Holidays will be: put on your sunglasses, fasten your seatbelts and off you go on your dream vacation!"

FLEET - Uzbekistan Airways to add first two A321neo in 2026

Uzbekistan Airways (HY, Tashkent International) will take delivery of its first two A321-200Ns in 2026 as it continues with plans to expand its network and modernise its fleet.

The new jets will be supplied under a lease agreement that the airline signed with CALC on June 10, 2025, with both units coming from CALC’s direct Airbus orderbook, the lessor said in a press release.

The narrowbodies are expected to be configured with 16 business class seats and 156 economy class seats, local media outlet UZ Daily reported. The airline did not immediately respond to queries from ch-aviation on when it expected further aircraft deliveries.

According to ch-aviation data, the airline has eighteen of the variant on order. It currently operates 44 aircraft, namely nine A320-200s, ten A320-200Ns, five A321-200NX(LR)s, two ACJ320-200s, six B767-300ERs, two B767-300ER(BCF)s, seven B787-8s, two Il-76TDs, and one Pilatus PC-24.

The deal comes after the Uzbek government said in May it has agreed to buy fourteen Airbus aircraft and lease five more to refresh the carrier's fleet. In February, the airline also hinted it was planning to sign a memorandum of understanding with Boeing for fourteen incremental B787-8s.

As part of its growth strategy, the airline plans to launch its initial public offering (IPO) in 2026, along with 11 other large state-owned enterprises. It is already pushing ahead with its IPO preparations by switching from national to international accounting standards and also plans to sign a financing agreement with Deutsche Bank to fund aircraft purchases.
