FLEET - Tonga's Lulutai sees only Saab340B go AOG after landing impact

Lulutai Airlines (L8, Tongatapu) is actively seeking leased capacity to replace its Saab 340B(Plus) that was taken out of service indefinitely after it struck a cement block and sustained significant damage during a runway excursion event while taxiing at Fua'amotu Airport on December 8, 2023.

"While on the apron [taxiing] back to the terminal, upon turning, the Saab 340 experienced a technical issue," reads a Lulutai Airlines statement. "The aircraft turned and hit a cement block on the side of the apron. The aircraft's wing became lodged on the cement block. There were 35 passengers on board. No passengers were injured or physically harmed."

A3-PUA (msn 408) was operating a scheduled flight from Tongatapu to Vava'u when a technical problem, reportedly a hydraulic issue, required the aircraft to return. Local outlets report the Saab (Sweden) (SCT, Linköping) experienced a landing gear collapse after losing direction control after landing. Images circulating on social media show the aircraft's right engine resting on the cement block and the right wing landing gear collapsed. Lulutai Airlines CEO Poasi Tei told ch-aviation that a full damage assessment still needed to be completed, and the airline remained unsure about the extent of the repair work required and how long it would take. A3-PUA is leased to the state-owned Tongan carrier by Montrose Global.

"Our top priority now is to acquire an aircraft (dry or wet lease) to address capacity constraints in our domestic network with immediate effect," he added.

The aircraft is one of two Lulutai Airlines uses on its inter-island network. The second aircraft is a recently delivered DHC-6-400. The airline also has a single Y12 that does not appear to be in regular service. Lulutai Airlines advises both it and the Civil Aviation Division at Tonga's Ministry of Infrastructure are investigating the incident.

Silver Airways ends Saab 340-operations

On 5 September, Silver Airways operated its final Saab 340-flight, ending a ten year tenure of the type with the airline. The final flight was conducted by Saab 340B+ N336AG (340B-436), which flew from Suan Juan to Orlando (FL). It was later that day ferried to Springfield (MO).

Over the years, Silver Airways operated 28 different Saab 340s. It was the airline's first aircraft type when it launched operations in December 2011. Silver Airways was the new name for Gulfstream International Airlines, which was leaving a lengthy Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection restructuring.

With the phase-out of the Saab 340s, Silver Airways is now an all ATR-operator with a fleet of eight ATR42-600s, four ATR72-600s and five ATR72-500Fs (which it operates for Amazon Prime Air).

Aer Southeast to postpone launch, refund customers

customers after the Irish Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) found that the airline had sold tickets without the proper authority, reports The Irish Times. It had originally planned to start flights from Waterford in Ireland to London Luton, Manchester Int'l and Birmingham Int'l in the United Kingdom on July 24, but will now postpone its launch date to 'later on this summer'.

As previously reported, the Irish virtual carrier did not have the requisite tour operator's license to sell tickets on its planned routes. The flights were to be carried out by Slovenian ACMI/charter specialist Lipican Aer (LIP, Portoroz) using a Saab 340.

Aer Southeast's CEO, Einar Adalsteinsson, has said that they are still committed to launching flights from Waterford, which has been without commercial operations since mid-2016.

CAMRA Regional Airlines eyes Cameroon flights

CAMRA Regional Airlines (Yaoundé Nsimalen) is a Canadian-backed start-up looking to offer both scheduled passenger and cargo flights throughout Cameroon and West Africa in general.

Using a fleet of Saab 340Bs (which may include freighters as well), CAMRA plans to connect its Yaoundé Nsimalen hub with Douala, Bertoua, N'Gaoundéré, Garoua, Bafoussem, and Bamenda before venturing abroad to Libreville (Gabon), Bangui (Central African Republic), Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), and Lagos (Nigeria).

At present, the domestic Cameroonian market is dominated by government-backed carrier Camair-Co (QC, Douala) using a B737-700. A pair of MA-60s, on lease from Section Liaison Air Yaoundé (Yaoundé Nsimalen), have yet to enter service despite having arrived in-country in March this year. Local media indicate the Chinese-built turboprop has yet to secure type-certification from the Cameroonian civil aviation authority (Autorité aéronautique du Cameroun - AAC)
