Boeing, American Airlines Complete First 737 MAX Landing Gear Exchange

Milestone achievement confirms the program's effectiveness and the quality standards operators expect.
As Boeing expands global exchange availability, customers benefit from reduced AOG risk and improved maintenance predictability.

PLANO, Texas - PRNewswire-- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and American Airlines announced the successful completion of the first landing gear exchange for a 737 MAX, marking a key milestone as the company extends its longstanding Landing Gear Exchange Program to the MAX platform. The exchange validates Boeing's ability to deliver fully overhauled, Boeing‑certified main and nose landing gear assemblies that arrive ready to install — reducing aircraft on‑ground time and easing spare‑parts burdens for operators.

The Landing Gear Exchange Program has long provided customers with a practical alternative to buying and warehousing expensive spare gear. This first 737 MAX swap with American Airlines demonstrates the program's proven model — overhaul, certification and delivery of ready‑to‑install assemblies — is effective for the newest generation of Boeing single‑aisle aircraft.

An American Airlines 737 MAX on takeoff. Global Services recently completed the first landing gear exchange for a MAX airplane.

"This milestone reinforces what our customers have known for years: Boeing's Landing Gear Exchange capability delivers predictable, safe and cost‑effective outcomes," said William Ampofo, senior vice president, Parts & Distribution and Supply Chain, Boeing Global Services. "Extending the program to the 737 MAX gives operators another proven tool to shorten downtime, manage costs and align heavy maintenance with operational needs."

For the completed 737 MAX exchange Boeing supplied an overhauled and certified landing gear assembly with installation kit. The swap validated the end‑to‑end process — from technical overhaul and paperwork through delivery — and proved the approach can be applied consistently to the MAX fleet.

Boeing is also increasing global overhaul capacity and coordinating with certified MRO partners to expand geographic availability and shorten lead times. Near term priorities include enlarging 737 MAX‑capable exchange inventory, adding forward‑exchange slots close to customer operations, and tracking operational metrics to quantify downtime and cost benefits as the program scales.

By enabling a forward exchange of certified assemblies, Boeing's solution helps airlines avoid lengthy in‑place overhauls and the risk of extended groundings. Operators can shift from holding high‑cost spare inventories to reserving forward‑exchange slots, freeing working capital and improving fleet predictability. Boeing manages the technical overhaul, incorporation of applicable service bulletins, certification and supplier coordination, transferring inventory and obsolescence risk away from operators.

For the completed 737 MAX exchange Boeing supplied overhauled and certified main and nose landing gear assemblies with installation kits (wheels, tires and brakes excluded). The swap validated the end‑to‑end process — from technical overhaul and paperwork through delivery — and proved the approach can be applied consistently to the MAX fleet.

American Airlines Tulsa base maintenance facility celebrates 80 years of excellence

This recent photo of Tech Ops – Tulsa shows the growth of the maintenance base with the four original hangars visible and still in use today
  • Former military aircraft plant grows exponentially into the world’s largest commercial aircraft maintenance base.
  • The facility now employs nearly 5,000 team members and is the backbone of the airline’s technical operations.
TULSA, Okla. — For eight decades, the American Airlines base maintenance facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Tech Ops – Tulsa), has stood at the center of the airline’s technical operations, evolving into the world’s largest commercial aircraft maintenance base and a cornerstone of the airline’s commitment to safety and reliability.

“American is proud to celebrate Tech Ops – Tulsa, a cornerstone of our aircraft maintenance operation,” said Senior Vice President of Technical Operations Kevin Brickner. “Our team of skilled aviation maintenance professionals — in Tulsa and across our system — is the best in the business, and they set the standard for safety, quality and ingenuity. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our team members, the City of Tulsa and the State of Oklahoma. We’re eagerly looking forward to the next 80 years in Tulsa and beyond.”

It all started in 1945 when the U.S. government listed a military aircraft plant as surplus property. The property, with four large hangars anchoring more than 260 acres, caught the eye of American’s leaders who soon negotiated a lease with the City of Tulsa and began relocating its maintenance and engineering operations from New York’s La Guardia airport to the new Tulsa facility. The move reflected American’s growth and Tulsa’s emergence as a major aviation and aerospace hub, bolstered by a skilled local workforce, which still holds true today.

The maintenance base opened in June 1946, and started overhauling Douglas DC-3 aircraft. American’s then CEO and industry pioneer Cyrus Rowlett “C.R.” Smith celebrated the facility’s opening with an eye toward the future.

“We plan to become citizens of Tulsa and Oklahoma,” Smith said. “We plan a great expansion and development in this city and this state. Our future is ahead of us. We are looking forward.”

Over the years, almost every aircraft type flown by American passed through Tulsa’s hangars. Early propeller-powered models such as the DC-3 and Convair 240 soon made way for turbofan engines powering Boeing 707s. Boeing 727s and 747s and the McDonnell-Douglas DC-10s and legendary MD-80s later occupied hangars. Modern Boeing 737 and 787 families of aircraft touch down at the base for scheduled maintenance work today.

Tech Ops – Tulsa, which is currently undergoing $400 million in improvements, has grown to 3.3 million square feet of hangar and shop space sprawling across 330 acres at Tulsa International Airport. Together with the airline’s nearby offsite composite repair and wheel and brake facilities, these technical centers of excellence provide maintenance and related support to more than 400 aircraft that visit the base annually.

The source of the base’s success — and the standard set for the industry — is the people. Today, nearly 5,000 team members (including more than 2,300 licensed aviation maintenance technicians) work in aircraft overhaul, component repair, engine overhaul, engineering, supply chain, facilities maintenance and information technology, to keep Tech Ops – Tulsa moving 24/7. And they’re not just individual team members — the base has familial roots with generations of families working at the base over the decades.

Eighty years after the maintenance base opened, the airline continues looking forward to welcoming the next generation of aviation maintenance professionals through its hangar doors. In 2024, American announced a partnership with Tulsa Tech — the alma mater of many current Tech Ops – Tulsa Team members — providing interviews to top students and ongoing engagement opportunities with the airline’s team members, formalizing a decades-long relationship with the school. American also sponsored Tulsa Tech’s adult student team at the 2026 Aerospace Maintenance Council Competition. Tech Ops – Tulsa team members mentored students leading up to the competition, and that partnership paid off — the team took first place among all 47 schools.

FLEET - American Airlines issues RFP for widebody order

American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) has issued a request for proposals with Airbus and Boeing to evaluate its next order for widebody aircraft, the company’s chief executive officer Robert Isom revealed during its 2026 annual meeting.

Speaking about long-term investments American is currently making, Isom said: “One good example is the work we are doing to shape the future of our widebody fleet. The company currently has 19 widebodies on order (all B787-9s) with options for 28 more.

Operated by Envoy Air, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group, the Embraer 175 taking off for Venezuela featured a special livery marking the 250th anniversary year of the United States.

A second daily flight between Miami (MIA) and Caracas (CCS) will start on May 21.

The Envoy-operated Embarer 175 with a special livery marking America’s 250th anniversary year received a water cannon salute as it departed the gate in Miami.

Aircraft will fly from DFW to MIA to service the inaugural flight from Miami to Caracas, Venezuela.

FORT WORTH, Texas — As American Airlines marks its centennial year, the airline today unveiled a special America250 commemorative aircraft, celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and honoring the nation’s enduring spirit of innovation, resilience and connection. FLEET - American Airlines chooses CFM International engines to power future deliveries of Airbus A321neos

  • American and CFM are building on a multidecade relationship that supports American’s narrowbody fleet.
  • The engine order will power the Airbus A321neo aircraft ordered by American in March 2024.

  • CFM will continue to provide long-term maintenance for American’s CFM LEAP-1A engines, providing predictable and cost-effective servicing over the life of the engines.
FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines today announced that its future deliveries of Airbus A321neos will continue to be powered by the CFM LEAP-1A engine from CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines. These engines will be installed on the Airbus A321neos that American ordered two years ago. As part of the expanded partnership, CFM International will continue to provide long-term maintenance for American’s CFM LEAP-1A engines for years to come.

“American is proud to operate more CFM/GE Aerospace-powered mainline and regional aircraft than any other airline in the world, and American’s aircraft have flown with GE Aerospace technology for almost a century,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom. “We are excited that CFM LEAP engines will power our next phase of A321neo deliveries, maximizing the power of our fleet investments to deliver the best network to our customers utilizing the best-performing engine in the business.”

The financial terms and conditions of the CFM LEAP-1A engines purchase and long-term maintenance agreement have not been disclosed.

“We are proud to be under wing powering American’s modernized fleet, and appreciate their continued trust,” said H. Lawrence Culp, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at GE Aerospace. “We are committed to delivering best-in-class LEAP engines to support the growth of American’s network as they serve more destinations for their customers.”

American has the youngest fleet of the legacy U.S. carriers, with 84 A321neos and five A321XLRs in its fleet, with an additional 120 A321neos and 35 A321XLRs on order through 2032, all to be powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines. American also has options to purchase 116 additional A320 family aircraft from Airbus which, if exercised, will also be outfitted with the CFM LEAP-1A engine.

The airline recently debuted the A321XLR, elevating transcontinental travel. As the only U.S.-based airline to operate the aircraft, American offers customers luxurious Flagship Suite® seats, relaxing Premium Economy seats and a reimagined Main Cabin, all featuring high-speed Wi-Fi and complimentary seatback entertainment with Bluetooth connectivity throughout the journey.

American first selected the CFM LEAP-1B engine in 2011 when it announced its purchase of 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline currently has 93 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in operation with an additional 125 on order. The relationship expanded three years later when American chose the LEAP-1A engine for its order of A321neos.

CFM LEAP engines have experienced the fastest ramp-up in commercial aviation history. Advanced technologies like composite fan blades and ceramic matrix composites deliver an engine that is 15% more fuel efficient, with 15% lower carbon emissions than prior-generation CFM56 engines. Backed by advanced health monitoring systems and an open MRO ecosystem, CFM LEAP engines offer mature reliability and enable high asset utilization for narrowbody aircraft.

AIRLINE - American Airlines centennial celebrations take flight

In 1926, the story of one of the world’s most iconic airline brands started with a flight carrying mail from Chicago to St. Louis. And 100 years later, the story of that one flight unfolded into a global aviation leader: American Airlines. While there’s much to celebrate in 2026, customers will start to see and be a part of American’s celebrations for a milestone of 100 years of flight starting today.

“American is proud to be among the small group of airlines that have celebrated 100 years of flight,” said Robert Isom, American’s Chief Executive Officer. “There’s no brand in aviation more iconic than American, built on a culture of innovation and forward-thinking. We’re poised to continue that legacy into the next 100 years for our customers and team members.”

A centennial celebration for all customers
Travelers should get their cameras ready to capture a special centennial livery on a Boeing 737 later this month. This aircraft, which is one of the backbones of American’s industry-leading domestic and short-haul international network, pays homage to the past while looking to the future of travel.

Toward the aft of the aircraft, the silver infinity rings, referred to as American’s centennial pattern, represent a subtle nod to the airline’s forward focus and infinite possibilities.

Travelers will also start seeing the airline’s centennial logo throughout various points in their travel journey — from the online booking process to airports and in flight.

This centennial logo — a seamless blend of American’s brand with an infinity symbol to represent American’s enduring legacy and connection with its customers — will be featured across the airline’s digital channels, including aa.com, social media channels, inflight entertainment screens and merchandise, including airplane models of the centennial livery. In addition, the airline is placing a special decal of the logo to its fleet of more than 1,500 aircraft, celebrating American’s centennial with every flight.

A historic day in Chicago aviation: American celebrates 70 years of firsts at O’Hare

American Airlines joined the City of Chicago to celebrate the 70th anniversary of commercial air service at O’Hare today.

American brought history to life by reenacting O’Hare’s first passenger flight with the TWA heritage livery aircraft.

The airline reflects on seven decades of commitment to its ORD customers, team members and the broader Chicagoland community.

CHICAGO — On this day 70 years ago, American Airlines made Chicago aviation history when Trans World Airlines (TWA), which would later be acquired by American, took off from Chicago’s new airport — marking the first passenger flight to depart from O’Hare International Airport (ORD). A dedication ceremony drew 23,000 people to the airport to witness the historic departure of TWA Flight 94, bound for Paris — the first ceremonial flight that officially opened the airport for commercial service on Oct. 29, 1955.

American joined the City of Chicago today to bring history to life by returning the TWA heritage livery back to ORD to reenact that first passenger flight. Customers on board American Flight 2743, operated on a Boeing 737-800 TWA heritage livery aircraft, were treated to a surprise gate celebration and water cannon salute to mark the occasion. The airline’s Boeing 737-800 Astrojet heritage livery aircraft also passed through Chicago today — transporting ORD back to the 1950s for the milestone anniversary.

“For 70 years, American has grown alongside O’Hare, helping shape it into one of the world’s leading aviation hubs,” said American’s Senior Vice President of Global Airports, Contact Centers and Inflight Dining Operations Julie Rath. “We’re proud to stand with our partners today at the City of Chicago and Chicago Department of Aviation to honor the incredible history we share and celebrate the investments we’ve made together to elevate Chicago as a world-class destination. Fueled by our unwavering commitment to our Chicago team and customers, as well as the vibrant communities that keep the city thriving, we look forward to our future as the airline that sets the standard at ORD.”

ORD’s scheduled passenger service began the day after the dedication ceremony — with American leading the way. On Oct. 30, 1955, Flight 715 from Detroit marked the airport’s first scheduled arrival, followed by the first scheduled departure — Flight 566 to Cincinnati.

American operated up to 16 daily flights to start in October 1955 — representing a 3,025% increase in departures as the airline looks ahead to more than 500 flights planned for summer 2026.

“From O’Hare’s very first passenger flight, American Airlines has been woven into the fabric of our city’s aviation legacy,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “As American continues to grow and invest in Chicago, we look forward to building on this partnership and shaping the next 70 years of progress together.”

Deeply rooted in Chicago
This milestone comes as American prepares to celebrate its centennial year — with the first American flight carrying U.S. mail from St. Louis to Chicago in 1926. That momentous day represents the birth of American Airlines and its deep roots in Chicago over nearly a century.
A throwback postcard shows American has long been proud of its Chicago connection.
A story in American’s internal news publication, Flagship News, from Nov. 3, 1955, highlighted the ORD opening.
Since 1955, American has invested billions of dollars into ORD and in the region — reaffirming its commitment to Chicago over the course of seven decades. That legacy was strengthened this year as American underwent a major expansion in Chicago — adding more than 20 new destinations to its ORD network in 2025.

American’s 9,500 ORD-based team members are the driving force behind its success. O’Hare is the airline’s third-largest hub based on departing flights and serves as its Midwest connection point, with service to more than 160 destinations in 17 countries.

A new book from one of the city’s many bookstores is the perfect souvenir.

Modern golf has its roots in Scotland, and today, golfers have much to look forward to with more than 550 golf courses in the region. And, as a growing destination for business traffic, American’s daily flights enable convenient schedule options for travelers blending leisure and business.

American launched seasonal service between Philadelphia (PHL) and EDI this year, with plans to start the season on this route earlier next year. Flights from JFK will be complementary to service between PHL and EDI. For travelers desiring even more flexibility to choose the perfect itinerary or to visit more of Europe, American’s Atlantic Joint Business partner British Airways offers nonstop flights from EDI to England, Italy and Spain.

JFK to EDI will be American’s seventh new trans-Atlantic route for summer 2026. In August, American announced five new routes to Europe, including new international service to Budapest, Hungary (BUD) and Prague (PRG).
