Spirit Airlines signs MoU for up to 100 A320neo Family aircraft
Airbus and Spirit Airlines have agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding for the U.S.-based airline to acquire up to 100 A320neo Family aircraft. Spirit announced its intention to place firm orders for a mix of A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo to meet its future fleet requirements.
“This new order represents another milestone for Spirit,” said Spirit Airlines’ President and CEO Ted Christie. “The additional aircraft will be used to support Spirit’s growth as we add new destinations and expand our network across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. We look forward to working with our valued partners at Airbus to finalise our agreement.”
“The Airbus A320 Family has been a strong platform for the remarkable success of Spirit over the past several years,” said Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Christian Scherer. “The ongoing, enthusiastic spirit the airline demonstrates in our A320neo Family is most rewarding, and we look forward to playing a part in the Spirit team’s continued growth for many, many years to come.”
Spirit is a fast growing ultra-low-cost carrier in the Americas, based in South Florida.
Featuring the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky, the best-selling A320neo Family, comprising the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo, deliver at least 20% reduced fuel burn as well as 50% less noise compared to previous-generation aircraft, thanks to incorporating the very latest technologies including new-generation engines and Sharklets. At the end of September 2019, the A320neo Family had received more than 6,650 firm orders from nearly 110 customers worldwide.

Spirit Airlines takes delivery of first A320neo in United States
Airline expands its all-Airbus fleet with optimized efficiency
Spirit Airlines, headquartered in Miramar, Florida (U.S.), took delivery last Friday of the very first A320neo to be delivered to a U.S. customer. It is the first of 55 A320neo Family aircraft the low-cost carrier has ordered (five leased from AerCap, 50 ordered from Airbus). All of Spirit’s A320neo Family aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney Pure Power PW1100-JM engines.
“This state-of-the-art technology will burn less fuel and lower our operational costs,” said Ted Christie, Spirit Airlines Chief Financial Officer. “We continue to lead the industry in both reducing our carbon footprint and providing ultra-low fares on air travel. Spirit is thrilled to be the first carrier to bring this innovation to the U.S.”
“We are proud to have delivered the first A320neo aircraft in the U.S. to our valued customer Spirit Airlines,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers. “The A320neo Family is the aircraft of choice among the world’s airlines and we appreciate our customers’ confidence in our leading single-aisle Family with its unbeatable productivity and fuel efficiency.”
An all-Airbus fleet helps Spirit maintain an efficient, streamlined operation, offering substantial benefits and consistency to the airline’s in-flight, technical operations and maintenance teams. The A320 Family also offers the most comfortable single-aisle cabin in the sky at a full seven inches wider than competing aircraft, allowing for 18”-wide seats in comfort economy as standard. The Airbus A320neo delivered today is the 89th aircraft to join Spirit’s growing fleet.
The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver more than 15 percent fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020. With nearly 4,800 orders received from 87 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent share of the market. Including Spirit’s A320neo delivered today, 26 A320neo aircraft have been delivered to nine operators.

Spirit Airlines signs commitment for 75 Airbus A320Family jets
Spirit Airlines and Airbus signed today at the Dubai Airshow a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 75 single-aisle aircraft, comprising 45 A320neo aircraft (new engine option) and 30 A320s. The engine selection will be announced later.
The new aircraft will be used on Spirit’s targeted growth markets in the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America. The A320neo will help build on the great economic success the airline has already enjoyed with their existing all-Airbus fleet of 35 A320 Family aircraft
“We are excited to expand our partnership with Airbus and grow our fleet into the next decade,” said Ben Baldanza, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines. “Spirit Airlines’ low fares require an efficient, reliable aircraft and the A320 Family, including the neo, fits that model well.”
“The A320 and A320neo continue to set the pace,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “The unrivalled economics of these aircraft convinced Spirit to go all-Airbus and that decision has clearly paid off since for the airline.”
The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. The A320neo reduces fuel burn by 15%, which is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel – the consumption of 1000 mid size cars. This saves 3600 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft per year, the amount of CO2 absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint.
Including today’s announcement, firm orders and commitments for the A320neo, launched less than a year ago in December 2010, already exceed 1,300 from 23 customers and makes the aircraft the fastest selling airliner ever.
