Airbus’ A380 will continue pleasing passengers on a global scale
The A380, which takes off or lands somewhere in the world every two minutes, will retain its status as a passenger-pleasing aircraft in the years to come thanks to Airbus’ top-level support for the double-deck airliner and its continued use by operators around the globe.
More than 300 million passengers have flown on A380s since the aircraft’s service entry in 2007, with 330-plus flights performed each day by the global fleet – providing ample opportunity for travellers to enjoy the most spacious cabin in the sky. The A380 currently is operated on 150 routes, while 400 airports worldwide are A380-compatible.
Over 240 A380s have been delivered to date. Among the latest operators is All Nippon Airways (ANA), with the Japanese carrier gearing up to receive its third A380 from Airbus, optimising flight services on the highly popular route connecting Tokyo’s Narita International Airport and Honolulu in the U.S. Hawaiian Islands.
With the quietest cabin in the sky and room for highly comfortable seating in all classes of service, A380 passengers can enjoy every aspect of the flight and arrive at their destination feeling inspired and ready to go. Its double-deck interior enables operators to increase profit and maximise revenues.
Airbus is fully engaged in cabin refurbishing with several of its A380 customers – looking to introduce even greater levels of passenger comfort. The investments by these customers, which include Qantas and Singapore Airlines, herald many years of continued operations for the A380.
With the arrival of its third A380, ANA will be able to offer 14 A380 flights per week on the Narita-Honolulu route – an increase from the current 10, significantly expanding overall capacity.
Like the preceding two, ANA’s third A380 is painted in a special livery depicting the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle (also known as the Honu). This latest A380’s orange design – inspired by the Hawaiian sunset – was seen for the first time when the aircraft was recently rolled out of Airbus’ paint shop in Hamburg, Germany.
The first “FLYING HONU” entered service on ANA’s Narita-Honolulu route in May 2019 and features a blue design representing Hawaii’s blue skies. The second aircraft, also delivered last year, is painted emerald green to match the clear oceans surrounding the Pacific island chain.

All Nippon Airways takes delivery of its first A380
Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) has taken delivery of its first A380 at a special ceremony in Toulouse, becoming the 15th operator of the world’s largest passenger aircraft. The delivery ceremony was attended by ANA HOLDINGS President and CEO Shinya Katanozaka and hosted by Airbus CEO Tom Enders.
ANA has ordered three A380s and will operate the aircraft on the popular route between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu from 24 May. Each ANA A380 will feature a special livery depicting the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, also known as the Honu. The livery on the first aircraft is painted in blue, while the second will be green and the third orange.
ANA’s A380 is configured in a premium layout seating 520 passengers. The upper deck features eight suites in first class, 56 business class seats that convert to fully flat beds and 73 premium economy seats. Economy class is located on the main deck, where ANA offers a spacious layout seating 383 passengers, including 60 couch seats. The aircraft features ANA’s very latest in-flight entertainment systems, as well as full connectivity in all classes.
“We will commit all three of our Airbus A380 to the Tokyo-Honolulu route with the goal of introducing a new level of luxury service to our passengers flying ANA on the number one resort route for Japanese travelers,” said Shinya Katanozaka, President and CEO of ANA HOLDINGS INC.
“We believe the A380 will become a game changer for ANA and will enable us to increase our market share by doubling the number of seats connecting Honolulu and Tokyo by 2020,” he added. “The FLYING HONU is designed to offer unprecedented comfort and convenience and a world of new possibilities to ANA passengers, something that would not have been possible without the combined efforts of the Airbus and Rolls-Royce teams working closely with the dedicated professionals at ANA.”
“Airbus is proud to deliver this beautiful aircraft to ANA,” said Airbus CEO Tom Enders. “Offering unrivalled levels of passenger comfort, the A380 will enable ANA to increase its capacity on the busy route to Hawaii with maximum efficiency. We are confident that the aircraft will be highly successful in service with ANA and are committed to providing full support to the airline all along the way.”
The A380 offers airlines the most efficient option to meet demand on the world’s most heavily travelled routes. It is also firmly established as the aircraft of choice by passengers worldwide, offering more personal space in all classes, a super-quiet cabin and smooth ride. Around 250 million passengers have already flown on the aircraft.
Following today’s delivery to ANA, there are currently 232 A380s in service with 15 airlines worldwide, flying on 120 routes across the globe.
To experience the unique A380 in-flight experience, passengers can check available flights and make bookings via Airbus’ dedicated iflyA380 app or website.

The first A380 for All Nippon Airways (ANA) took to the skies today, completing a maiden flight from the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Toulouse, France to the Airbus site in Hamburg, Germany. The aircraft is now being prepared for cabin installation and painting in the airline’s special A380 livery.
ANA HOLDINGS INC. placed a firm order for three A380s in 2016, becoming the first customer for the superjumbo in Japan. The first delivery is scheduled early 2019, and the A380 will initially be operated on the popular Tokyo-Honolulu route.
Offering more personal space than any other aircraft, the A380 is the most efficient solution to meet growth on the world’s most heavily travelled routes, carrying more passengers with fewer flights at lower cost and with less emissions.
To date, Airbus has delivered 229 A380s, with the aircraft now in services with 14 airlines worldwide.

All Nippon Airways has expanded its international network by starting its first route to Cambodia
On 1 September the Star Alliance carrier began daily flights between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Phnom Penh (PNH). The 4,468-kilometre route is not served by any other carrier and will be flown by the airline’s 240-seat 787-8s. This becomes the only scheduled service between Japan and Cambodia and first since 2006 when Royal Khmer Airlines operated between the two countries. In total ANA now serves 16 international country markets from Tokyo Narita with China and USA by far the best served with 12 daily flights each

After years of ordering Boeing jets, All Nippon Airways orders Airbus A380s
ANA would become the first Japanese airline to fly Airbus’ biggest jet.
• ANA was the launch customer for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and has ordered 20 777-9s. But by ordering A380s, the company passed over Boeing’s competing four-engine aircraft, the 747-8.
• ANA’s wide-body jet fleet will no longer be an exclusively Boeing fleet, as Boeing now boasts on its website.
“ANA and Boeing share a long and successful partnership that spans more than five decades,” Boeing said in March 2014 when it announced the 777 order.
The four-engine double-deck A380s together are worth $1.3 billion at list prices. But it’s likely that ANA got the planes at a steep discount, since Airbus won no orders for the model during 2015.
Currently all but 11 of ANA’s 208-aircraft fleet are Boeing jets. The Airbus planes are A320s. ANA and other Japanese airlines have ordered 35 of Boeing’s 747s over the last 20 years.
If ANA had ordered 747s, it would have been a big boost for the Everett production line because Boeing has only won two net orders for the planes this year.
An ANA spokesman did not respond to an emailed query and Airbus did not have the order on its website, so confirmation will have to wait until the new year.
The 550-passenger A380s are to operate on ANA’s Japan-to-Hawaii service, according to the Nikkei story.
Honolulu is a important destination for Japanese tourists and is especially popular for weddings. Lines of stretch limousines can often be seen at Oahu beaches, with photographers shooting happy Japanese couples with Hawaii beaches and palms as backdrops.
The ANA order would be the second big Japanese break from fealty to Boeing, after Japan Airlines ordered 31 Airbus A350s in October 2013.
ANA and JAL, Japan’s two largest airlines, were early customers for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, and both suffered from the Dreamliners’ multiple delays. In particular, the two airlines grounded their own 787 fleets in January 2013 after lithium ion batteries overheated, even before the FAA grounded the global Dreamliner fleet.
The Boeing-Japan link has been strong for decades, partly because so many major Boeing aircraft assemblies are built by the “three heavies,” the Japanese corporations Fuji, Kawasaki and Mitsubishi.

All Nippon Airways Tokyo Haneda to Sydney
All Nippon Airways has returned to Australia with the launch on 11 December of a daily service between Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Sydney (SYD). The 7,812-kilometre route will be flown by the Star Alliance member’s 787-9s. Direct competition is provided by Qantas which already operates the airport pair with a daily service, while indirect competition comes from Japan Airlines’ daily service between Tokyo Narita and Sydney. The inaugural flight was operated by a 787-9 in a Star Wars R2-D2 livery. Kerrie Mather, MD & CEO, Sydney Airport, said: “We’re excited to welcome ANA to Sydney Airport and Australia, offering an excellent product for Australians and Japanese alike. We’re also thrilled to showcase the aircraft’s unique R2-D2 livery for passengers and fans in Sydney and for the first time in Oceania.
The arrival of ANA is great news for tourism and trade, bringing an additional 36,000 Japanese visitors to Sydney each year and contributing an anticipated $74 million in additional annual visitor expenditure to NSW. Japan has been Sydney’s fastest growing outbound destination over the last three years. It’s increasingly popular with business and leisure travellers, who will benefit from increased choice with the direct service to Tokyo and convenient links to ANA’s international and domestic routes.” Osamu Shinobe, President and CEO, All Nippon Airways, said: “Today’s launch of services to Sydney marks the opening of our fourth international destination in 2015.
The first round-trip flight was fully booked, and we are happy to report that reservations are strong. We are also excited by the prospect of bringing more Australian travellers to Japan and vice versa. The route links Sydney with Haneda Airport for fast access to central Tokyo. An early morning arrival also lets passengers conveniently connect with our domestic flights to more than 40 airports throughout Japan or fly on to Europe the same day on our Kangaroo Route. Business Class passengers can spend their transit time relaxing in comfort in the Haneda ANA Lounge, which we completely refurbished this year.” All Nippon Airways has served Australia in the past, with flights from Tokyo Narita to Sydney ending in June 1998, while Osaka to Sydney services were terminated in April 1999.
Surprisingly, Kerrie Mather (MD & CEO, Sydney Airport) and Ryo Sadayuki (VP & GM, Oceania Region, ANA) used a traditional knife rather than a light sabre to cut the celebratory cake at Sydney Airport to welcome the return of All Nippon Airways to Australia on 12 December. The inaugural flight from Tokyo Haneda was operated by the airline’s Star Wars liveried 787-9. Direct competition is provided by Qantas, while Japan Airlines offers daily flights from Sydney to Tokyo Narita.
