ORDER - ANA HOLDINGS INC. Expands E190-E2 Fleet With Additional Order For Eight Aircraft

Embraer (NYSE: EMBJ / B3: EMBJ3) and ANA Holdings Inc. (ANA HD) today announced the signing of an agreement for eight E190-E2 aircraft, formalizing ANA HD's decision unveiled on July 29, 2026 to expand their fleet. This deal builds on the airline’s original purchase contract for 15 E190-E2 firm aircraft, announced in 2025, and will increase ANA HD’s total firm orders for E2 aircraft to 23. ANAHD still holds five additional options for E190-E2 aircraft.

"This additional E190-E2 order accelerates our efforts to build a sustainable regional aviation network in Japan," said Koji Shibata, President and CEO of ANA Holdings. "It also underscores our confidence in Embraer’s technology to reduce both environmental impact and operating costs. We are excited to deepen our partnership, elevating regional connectivity and delivering a superior passenger experience across Japan."

“We are honoured by ANA HD’s continued confidence in Embraer E2 small narrowbody aircraft and look forward to supporting the airline’s growth plans in Japan,” said Arjan Meijer, President & CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “With its exceptional economics and fuel efficiency, the E2 will support expanded connectivity across Japan along with better comfort and space for passengers.”

The E190-E2 is part of Embraer’s advanced E-Jets E2 family, recognized for its fuel efficiency, lower emissions, reduced noise levels, and exceptional passenger experience. The aircraft’s versatility allows airlines to efficiently serve both existing and new markets while delivering significant operational and environmental benefits.

Embraer E-Jets have been operating in Japan since 2009 and are supported by Embraer personnel in the country. ANA HD’s first E2 aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2028.

Japanese shipping firm to sell “high-cost” NCA to ANA

ANA Holdings and Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) announced on March 7 that they had reached a preliminary agreement for ANA to buy NCA - Nippon Cargo Airlines (KZ, Tokyo Narita), which currently functions as NYK’s air cargo transport arm.

The ANA - All Nippon Airways (NH, Tokyo Haneda) parent will acquire the 100% shareholding in a single transaction on October 1 “or a date to be separately agreed,” subject to obtaining clearance under competition laws and other conditions. Details such as the specific acquisition methods are yet to be finalised.

In a statement, the ANA holding company explained that in its medium-term business plan to 2025 it had set a goal of maximising profits in its core airline business, with expanding its cargo business set as one of the means to achieving this goal.

“NCA has provided high-quality international cargo transportation services for nearly 40 years as Japan’s only international air cargo carrier,” ANA said, elaborating that it already cooperates with NCA in MRO, codesharing on flights operated by both companies, and joint transportation. “Through this transaction, we will further enhance our Japan-based international air cargo network, products, and services, and provide high-quality and competitive air cargo transportation services that can respond to the sophistication of supply chains,” it added.

Back in 2005, ANA sold a 27.6% stake it had in NCA to NYK, which held a stake of the same size, and NCA became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nippon Yusen in 2010. ANA and NCA formed a business alliance in 2018, escalating their existing ties from an interline agreement to codesharing as well as leveraging opportunities presented by each other’s fleets.

But NYK admitted in its own statement that it faced issues such as the huge costs involved in upgrading the fleet and training personnel. Moreover, surging demand for air cargo during the pandemic and due to disruptions in marine transport, is expected to ease.

“NYK acquired all of the shares in NCA in 2010 with the aim of becoming a comprehensive logistics company offering ocean, land, and air transportation. However, the continuous introduction of new aircraft to expand the operation and maintenance system and the uninterrupted training of personnel required considerable expenditure. In the highly volatile business environment of airfreight, NCA has been facing challenges in expanding its business scale at a level that is commensurate with such costs,” it said.

ANA Holdings, by contrast, aims “to dramatically enhance its international air cargo network and products and services based in Japan,” NYK added.

The shipping firm divulged that NCA’s capital stock stood at JPY10 billion yen (USD73.3 million) and that its net profit rose from JPY31.87 billion (USD234 million) for the year ending March 31, 2020, to JPY61.32 billion (USD450 million) for the year ending March 2022.

NCA currently operates a fleet of eight B747-8(F)s (average age 10.5 years), the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. ANA currently operates a freighter fleet of five B767-300(ERBCF)s (average age 27.3 years), four B767-300Fs (average age 18.9 years), and two B777-Fs (average age 4 years).

ANA revealed in July that it had reached agreement with Boeing to convert two of its order for twenty B777-9s (a deal it forged in March 2014) into two B777-8 freighters to be introduced into service in 2028 or 2029. It later identified the routes it would likely deploy them on.

TOKYO, August 18, 2015 - ANA, Japan’s largest airline, today announced that two more of its planes will be decorated with Star Wars characters as part of an agreement with The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd. ANA also announced the Star Wars™ ANA Jet, which will showcase both BB-8 and R2-D2 on the outside of a Boeing 767-300. These Star Wars themed planes will join the previously announced R2-D2™ ANA Jet, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Through this combination of characters, ANA hopes to welcome more passengers of all ages from around the world.

ANA launched the Star Wars Project in April 2015 after signing a five year promotion license contract for the Star Wars brand with The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd. As part of the agreement, the ANA Star Wars planes’ will also display in-flight decorations, such as headrest covers, paper napkins and cups featuring Star Wars characters - more details will be announced at a later date. This will be the first time that any of the Star Wars movies have been included as part of an in-flight entertainment system.1

The three Star Wars™ Jets will fly international and domestic routes. On October 18, the R2-D2™ ANA Jet is scheduled to go into service on international routes, initially as flight NH116 between Tokyo and Vancouver, and then fly between Japan and other cities in ANA’s robust international network including the US (Seattle and San Jose), Europe (Munich, Paris and Brussels), Australia (Sydney), China (Beijing), and Indonesia (Jakarta).2

In November, the Star Wars™ ANA Jet will fly domestic Japanese routes, and then in March 2016 the BB-8™ ANA Jet is scheduled to start serving international routes principally between Japan and North America (the exact routes have yet to be announced)3. Fans will be able to see the planes’ schedules at www.ana-sw.com.

“We’re thrilled to unveil the designs of our new Star Wars themed planes, and I’m sure fans across the world will love the look,” said Osamu Shinobe, President and CEO of ANA. “At ANA we pride ourselves on offering the best possible flight experience, from the ANA Star Wars Project and our extensive in-flight entertainment options, to our peerless, award-winning in-flight service, dining options created by Michelin-starred chefs and wines chosen by our discerning sommeliers. We look forward to providing our passengers with an engaging in-flight experience as they travel our planet.”

1 Movies to be shown from November 1, 2015 to January 31, 2016.
2 Routes and flights detailed on the above site are provisional and subject to change without notification.
3 The routes are tentatively set as New York, Chicago and Houston, but this is subject to change.

“We at Lucasfilm are absolutely delighted to have found in Japan such a wonderful partner in ANA and to able to provide you with a wonderful opportunity like this one.” said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm Ltd. “I, too, certainly look forward to flying aboard one of ANA’s Star Wars jets on my next trip to Japan.”
