AIRCRAFT - Unpacking the A350F’s new livery

Airbus transformed graphic design into a high-tech paint job for the first A350F
When the A350F rolled out of the paintshop last week, sporting shiny new livery, an almost four year journey came to an end. Beginning in October 2022, over 4,000 people submitted design proposals for the aircraft’s livery, with the winners announced at the 2023 Paris Air Show. Two designs were chosen as winners, which were then combined into one by the Airbus corporate design department.

Creating a digital mockup of the combined design was one thing, but bringing it to life was much more complicated. Successfully pulling off this paint job required close collaboration between the branding, paintshop, engineering and manufacturing, and marketing teams. Balancing delicate weight requirements with practicality and modifications to infrastructure in the paintshop, the successful completion of this livery is a credit to dozens of people at Airbus.

What did it take over the last four years to get here?

Turning a 1,000-square-metre canvas over to the public

Like all aircraft paint jobs, everything started with the design. But unlike all other Airbus paint jobs, the design came from the public. The competition was open to everyone and presented contestants with a unique design opportunity that would be hard to find elsewhere: a 1,000 m² canvas. Since freighter aircraft have almost no windows, contestants had the entire fuselage to work with, giving them a maximum level of creative freedom.

Two cardboard box-themed designs inspired by the freighter's cargo ended up being selected as the winners.

"The concepts were similar but focused on slightly different elements, so they complemented each other perfectly,” says Airbus Corporate Design Manager Cassian Koshorst, who spearheaded the integration of both designs. “We were able to place graphics from both designs – including adhesive tape, stickers, and stamps – exactly where we wanted on the aircraft, even adding extra details to the cargo doors to make them stand out.”

The distinctive A350 carbon-fibre weave design was also added to the vertical tail plane, to align with the other A350 prototype aircraft. It takes on additional importance with the A350F, as it is the only freighter on the market with a predominantly carbon-fibre airframe.

"Ensuring the feasibility of this unique paint design required close collaboration with the paintshop team, who approached the task with absolute dedication and enthusiasm to ensure every detail was executed to perfection,” affirmed Koshorst.


Safety was also given a high-tech boost as well. A digital zero-collision system deploys precise 3D laser mapping to guide the giant automatic painting platform around the fuselage, using sensors that automatically slow its movement as they approach the aircraft and stop it completely five centimetres from its exterior. This dramatically reduces stress for the painters, who no longer have to operate this platform manually, and lets them focus on paint quality, application and precision.

"For a new programme like the A350F, avoiding disruptions is vital,” says Sebastien Casellas, an industrial systems engineer in the Airbus paintshop. “Damage to the aircraft means costly repairs, schedule delays and bottlenecks in the paint halls. Since we’ve implemented this anti-collision system, there have been zero recorded impacts.”

Developing a custom aircraft primer for the A350 Family


With the design finalised and the industrial system modified to welcome the freighter into the paintshop, all that remains is to paint the aircraft – but that is no small feat either. While most people may think of the livery as cosmetic, it also serves to protect the aircraft, shielding composites from UV rays and metals from corrosion, insulating the fuselage from contact with everything from jet fuel to deicing fluid.

Proper paint application thus relies on a variety of different factors: the paint itself, the surface preparation, temperature and humidity conditions in the shop, the thickness of the layers and more. It also depends on the material being painted. The A350F surface is composed of more than 90% composite material, the remainder being metallic. Composites expand and contract differently with temperature changes when compared with metals and paint. 

"To optimise performance for composites, we developed a new, more flexible external primer that is specifically designed to absorb thermal stress,” says Monica Asuad Ferrer, Head of External Paints and Coatings at Airbus. Primer is perhaps one of the most important layers of the process: “It ensures adhesion, allows for paint stripping and repainting when the aircraft is in-service, and of course ensures a durable paint system that our customers expect,” Asuad Ferrer explains. 

Balancing complex artistry with aircraft weight restrictions

Once the aircraft is primed, there are still more variables to consider. The visible livery consists of several layers applied over the initial structural primer and external primer: an intermediate coat, then a base coat (when colour is added), before the final clear coat layer. A delicate balance must be struck here between design and weight, as dry film paint adds considerable mass to the aircraft, which amounts to approximately 400 to 500 kilograms on an A350. 

"First, the artistic vision must be translated into an industrial process that manages all technical and regulatory requirements,” says Maxime Chincholle, Head of External Livery Design for the A330 and A350 Families. “Both paint and adhesive films are technologies that have been mastered by our painting division, and they both deliver the same high levels of performance and durability.”

The A350F’s complex livery was thus achieved using a mix of decorative-film adhesives and paint. The adhesives are printed with the required design and colors and placed over the painted background. This saves several layers of paint and complex masking, and reduces the number of individual paint colours required. It also cuts down on the time needed to paint the entire aircraft, as the curing and drying time of each paint layer can significantly extend the painting schedule.

A full circle moment for the winners

And what did the winners of the design contest have to say when they saw the final result roll out of the paint shop?

"Looking back at the first sketch I did and seeing the final, brilliant reality, it seems impossible to believe,” says John Feehan. “But Airbus has made it possible, and even more so, delivered it all in a fantastic cargo package.”

Quinnten Iversen echoed a similar sentiment, saying

"I feel incredibly proud to see the design come to life. It’s a full-circle moment for the passion for aviation that I have long shared with my younger brother [co-winner Ellisten]. Knowing that my excitement and interest in aviation have played a part in what is a revolutionary aircraft for the industry is a truly special moment.”

Both men sent their support and congratulations to the various Airbus teams who helped make this livery a reality.

"What was in my mind that day has been elevated and combined to make for a very bold, striking livery that will no doubt cause a stir wherever it goes. Can't wait to see it up close!” says Feehan.

SPECIAL LIVERY / AIRCRAFT NEW - The First Airbus A350F Emerges with 'Delivery Box' Paint Job


The first flight test aircraft is now fully assembled and painted, with its maiden flight scheduled for the end of September.

Airbus has unveiled its first fully assembled and painted A350F.

The aircraft emerged from the paint hangar with a paint job resembling a large delivery package.


The paint scheme resulted from a competition organized by Airbus that attracted around 4,000 entries. Two winning concepts were combined to create the final scheme applied to the first A350F.

The aircraft is the first flight test prototype of the freighter and will now undergo ground testing before taking off.

Airbus has officially stated that the maiden flight will take place before the end of 2026.

Airbus currently anticipates the first customer delivery in the second half of 2027.

Cathay Group targets 300 aircraft by 2036

Cathay Group outlined plans to expand its fleet to around 300 aircraft over the next 10 years during a press conference following the publication of its 2026 interim results. 

It expects 150 new aircraft, split equally between growth and replacement, subject to favourable market conditions. 

The group has 105 firm orders and expects further commitments to reach the target. 

Its current commitments include thirty-five B777-9s and thirty A330-900Ns for Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong International) and eight A350Fs for Cathay Cargo. 

The first B777-9 remains due in the second half of 2027, while the A350F, which was originally due in 2027, is expected to be around six months late.

Cathay Group orders two more Airbus A350F freighters

Toulouse, 27 May 2026 – Hong Kong’s Cathay Group has placed a firm order with Airbus for two additional Airbus A350F freighters. This will bring the airline’s total order to eight of the new-generation cargo aircraft. The A350F will be operated by the airline’s cargo division, Cathay Cargo, bringing new levels of efficiency across its extensive network.

ORDER - Air China Cargo increases A350F freighter order to 10 aircraft

Air China Cargo Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as "Air China Cargo") has signed a purchase agreement with Airbus for four additional A350F freighters, taking its total order for the type to 10 aircraft. Air China Cargo previously ordered six A350F freighters in November 2025.

“This additional order, following our initial A350F order last year, is a crucial strategic decision for the company to further optimise our fleet structure and expand transport capacity. It will allow us to better match and meet the demands of the international air cargo market, laying a solid foundation for the company's long-term stable development," said Wang Hongyan, Vice President of Air China Cargo.

ORDER -Air China Cargo to order more A350Fs

In a statement to the Shenzhen stock exchange on 30 April 2026, Air China announced that its board has approved the conversion of options on the Airbus A350F into firm orders. The airline will be converting all of its four options, taking its total firm orders for the type to ten. Delivery of the additional aircraft is scheduled for 2032 and 2033.

Air China announced its first order for six A350Fs back in October 2025. These are slated for delivery between 2029 and 2031.

Today, Air China Cargo, a full subsidiary of Air China, is operating a fleet of eight A330-200P2Fs, two Boeing B747-400Fs, and thirteen B777Fs.

Airbus is currently building two A350F-prototypes, for flight testing and expects the first flight to be taking place later this year. They are also in the process of conducting the needed ground tests. Certification and first delivery is expected for 2027. With this latest order from Air China, Airbus now has orders for 105 A350Fs from fourteen customers.

AIRCRAFT - Airbus completes first A350F Freighter main deck cargo door in Spain



Airbus has completed the manufacturing and assembly of the first main deck cargo door for the A350F freighter at its facility in Illescas, Spain. The component has been delivered to the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Toulouse, where it will be integrated into the fuselage of the first test aircraft and undergo testing in the coming weeks. Airbus is manufacturing two A350F aircraft for flight testing from 2026 to 2027.
The A350F main deck cargo door is the largest in the industry. Featuring a 4.5-metre cut-out width and a 4.3-metre tall opening, it is designed to make loading and unloading operations easier, faster, and safer. Located in the rear fuselage to maintain an optimal centre of gravity during loading, the door is made from composite materials and features an electrical open/close actuation system.


The Airbus plant in Illescas is one of the company's leading centres for the manufacturing of large-scale, complex composite surfaces. It manufactures the skins and assembles the door before it is delivered for its integration into the fuselage. 

As part of the pre-series production process the first main deck cargo doors will be installed in Toulouse. Once serial production starts, the main deck cargo door will be delivered from Illescas to Hamburg for integration into the aft fuselage and for the installation of the actuation systems. From there, that section of the fuselage will be transported to the FAL in Toulouse following the Airbus production process.

AIRCRAFT - Pushing the A350F to the limits: aircraft ground testing gets underway

The introduction of the A350 freighter version (“A350F”) represents a new challenge for Airbus, and the complexity of bringing a new aircraft variant to market is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the ground testing performed during final assembly.



What are the A350F’s innovations for cargo operations?

The A350F has introduced numerous systems which either feature major modifications or are completely new. These are largely concentrated in the cabin and cargo areas and have necessitated the development of associated aircraft ground tests. Key new systems to be tested include:


main-deck cargo loading system
main-deck cargo door
dedicated ‘courier’ area with seating for up to 10 occupants
anti-tail-tipping warning system
main-deck drainage system
new water & waste system
multi-zonal air distribution system
oxygen system
‘Smart Freighter’ on board connectivity system
video-monitoring system

Guillaume Terrien leads the ground test design activities for the new A350F. “As early as 2021, at the A350F’s definition phase – close collaboration was initiated between the FAL Ground Test Design and Chief Engineering teams,” he recalls. “The goal was to share FAL testability constraints so they could be taken into account from the preliminary aircraft design stage, thus facilitating future ground tests at the FAL stations. This approach is known as ‘co-design’.

Some highlight examples of co-designed ground tests for the A350F include:


The Cargo Loading System (CLS) comprises hundreds of electrical components on the floor , which requires automated testing of the many interconnecting cables and wires. “To simplify their CLS testing in serial production, Ground Test Design and Engineering devised a solution that allowed automated wiring self-tests to be performed directly from the cockpit using the computer's software functions,” explains Guillaume. “Therefore, as soon as the power-on happens in the A350 final assembly line, self-tests can automatically check more than 1,300 wires. The use of software automation minimises the time taken for the tests to a few minutes.”
The drainage system: probably the most dramatic ground testing challenge is for the external drainage of water from the cargo holds. The main deck must be able to drain both melted snow and cleaning water to prevent it from stagnating within the structure.


“It sounds simple, but it's actually one of the most complex systems,” says Guillaume. “Specific ‘test means’ have been developed to flood the system with more than 180 litres of water to check the tightness and ensure proper evacuation from the 50m long main compartment. The test has to be performed with the aircraft floor in a zero-degree inclination, using specific test means to fill all the pipes,” explains Guillaume.

The Tail Tipping Warning System (TTWS) constantly monitors the nose landing gear compression to prevent the aircraft from tipping onto its tail during loading. To test this system without endangering the aircraft, the teams use specific equipment that ‘tricks’ the sensors by simulating a landing gear extension. The goal is to stop the cargo loading system and validate the immediate triggering of the alarms (audible and visual).

In-production ‘serial ground tests’ vs one-off ‘development & certification tests’

Serial production testing is defined as checking the conformity of the systems' integration compared to the definition of each specific aircraft. The process involves the Engineering team providing requirements for testing, which the FAL (Final Assembly Line) Ground Test Design department transforms into test procedures to be applied by test technicians and the production team. Of the approximately 200 serial ground test instructions (GTI) for an A350 passenger aircraft, as much as 40% have been specifically created or modified for the A350F.

An example of a completely new serial test is the Main Deck Cargo Door Cycling test: The test requires cycling the MDCD many times, both manual, and also electrical to check the system, sensors and alerts behaviour during the FAL cycle.

Another example of a new serial ground test is the innovative Automated Wiring Self-Test for the CLS, described earlier in this article. The CLS will also undergo functional checks in serial production with various ULD containers up to 500 kilograms.

To complement the serial production ground tests, a separate parallel campaign of “development and certification testing” is being performed exclusively on the two flight-test aircraft: MSN 700 and MSN 701. These are one-off performance tests required for validation and verification (V&V) by authorities like EASA. The A350F has 55 such specific tests, known as “Ground Test Requirements”, which are planned and prepared by the FAL Ground Test Design team and executed in conjunction with the Engineering Design Office.

A notable GTR example is the Max Payload Test: This is performed once and involves loading the maximum payload of 111 tonnes – equivalent to the weight of approximately 18 elephants – to ensure correct sequencing and functionality, particularly with the MDCD operation.

The Pressurisation Development Test complements the standard pressurisation test for serial production. For this one-off test,flight test aircraft will be subjected to additional instrumentation, including cameras, displacement sensors, and a microphone on the MDCD, to monitor the door during the cabin pressure cycles.

Summing-up: paving the way for flight tests and service entry

The ground testing of the A350F is a defining phase which ensures that the physical aircraft being completed in the FAL matches the digital design requirements – for both certification as well as during serial production. From the 40% of serial test procedures that were created or re-engineered, to the implementation of 60 specific certification tests, the A350F’s ground testing programme is well on track.

DUBAI AIR SHOW - ORDER - Silk Way West Airlines orders two additional Airbus A350F freighters



 
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 19 November 2025 – Silk Way West Airlines based in Baku, Azerbaijan has signed a firm contract for an additional two A350F freighter aircraft. The agreement, which takes the total order to four A350Fs, forms the backbone of Silk Way West Airlines’ fleet modernisation and expansion strategy.

At the end of October 2025, the all-new A350F had registered 74 orders from 12 customers.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 18 November 2025 – Etihad Airways has announced a significant expansion of its Airbus widebody fleet by placing a firm order for six A330-900s, becoming the latest A330neo customer. In addition, the airline has disclosed an order for seven additional A350-1000s (increasing its total for the type to 27) and three A350F (bringing the airline’s A350F commitment to 10 aircraft).

The agreement was signed at the Dubai Airshow, where Etihad Airways also announced the commitment of nine A330-900s on lease from Avolon.

​The A350 is the world’s most modern widebody aircraft, designed to fly up to 9,700 nautical miles / 18,000 kilometres non-stop, setting new standards for intercontinental travel. The aircraft includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort. Its latest generation Rolls-Royce engines and use of lightweight materials bring a 25% advantage in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, compared to previous generation competitor aircraft.

The A350F features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, with fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers. The A350F is also the only freighter aircraft that will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, coming into effect in 2027. Currently, the assembly of test aircraft in Toulouse is underway.

Powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330neo is designed to fly up to 8,100 nautical miles / 15,000 kilometers non-stop and reduces fuel burn, CO2 emissions and operating cost by 25% compared to previous generation competitor aircraft. The A330neo features the award-winning Airspace cabin, which offers passengers a unique flying experience.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A330neo and the A350 Family are able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030. At the end of October 2025, the A350 Family had won over 1,400 orders from 64 customers and the A330 Family had won over 1,900 orders from more than 130 customers worldwide.

ORDER - Korean Air becomes new A350F customer

Korean Air has become a new customer for the world’s only all-new large freighter, following the conversion of seven of its existing A350-1000 passenger aircraft orders to the A350F.


Toulouse, France, 31 October 2025 - Korean Air has become a new customer for the world’s only all-new large freighter, following the conversion of seven of its existing A350-1000 passenger aircraft orders to the A350F.

“Korean Air is one of the world’s largest cargo operators,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business. “The decision to add the A350F to its fleet is therefore a very significant endorsement of the aircraft’s unique capabilities. The A350F will bring Korean Air the most efficient solution in the large freighter segment.”

The A350F features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry, with fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers. Over 70% of the airframe is made of advanced materials, resulting in a 46 tonne lighter take-off weight than the competing derivative. The A350F is also the only freighter aircraft that will fully meet ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards, coming into effect in 2027.

Currently under development, the A350F can carry a payload of up to 111 tonnes and will fly up to 4,700 nautical miles / 8,700 kilometres. Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the aircraft will bring a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions of up to 40% when compared to previous generation aircraft with a similar payload-range capability.

At the end of September 2025, the latest generation widebody A350 Family had won 1,445 orders from 63 customers worldwide, including 65 for the all-new A350F from 10 cargo carriers and one lessor.

Korean Air has ordered a total of 33 A350 aircraft. This now comprises 20 A350-1000s, seven A350Fs and six A350-900s, of which the first two have already been delivered. In addition, the carrier has outstanding orders for 39 A321neo single aisle aircraft

ORDER - Air China Cargo plans order for up to 10 Airbus A350F freighters


Air China Cargo is set to expand its all-cargo fleet with plans to order up to 10 Airbus A350F aircraft,

In a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on 28 October, the airline confirmed it had signed an agreement with Airbus covering six firm orders and four options, valued at $4.65 billion at list prices. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031.

AIRCRAFT - Airbus completes the first horizontal stabiliser for the A350F freighter in Spain



Getafe, Spain, 23 July 2025 - Airbus has completed manufacturing the first horizontal stabiliser (HTP) for the A350F freighter at its plants in Spain. This milestone demonstrates Spain's key role in the production of commercial aircraft, including the A350F programme.

The production of the A350F’s first horizontal stabiliser (HTP) involved the Airbus plant in Cádiz, where parts of the HTP were manufactured, and Getafe, for assembly and outfitting.

This HTP will be shipped to the Airbus Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Toulouse in the coming weeks to be joined with the fuselage of the first test aircraft. Airbus is manufacturing two A350F aircraft for flight testing in 2026 and 2027.

The A350F HTP can be manufactured in the same production line as the passenger version, delivering operational and industrial advantages and improvements.

Ricardo Rojas, President of Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business in Spain, said: "The A350F will offer a clean-sheet, specifically designed solution for air freight transport, bringing more efficiency and versatility to the cargo market. With more than 1,400 orders for the A350, including 66 A350Fs, Spain plays a key role in this programme that presents the future in air cargo transportion."

All in all, the horizontal stabiliser, rear fuselage (section 19) and lower wing covers for both the A350 and A350F are manufactured in Spain. In addition, the A350F's main deck cargo door, the largest in the industry, will also be manufactured in Spain. Made from composite materials, it has a 4.3-metre opening, making loading and unloading easier, faster and safer.

Designed to be the world's most advanced cargo aircraft, the A350F meets the evolving demands of the global air freight market. In terms of efficiency, it will offer at least a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to cargo aircraft currently in service. Thanks to a range capability of up to 8,700 kilometres with a payload of up to 111 tonnes, it will allow operators to deploy it on international long-haul routes.

ORDERS - Türkiye's MNG Airlines signs MoU for 2 A350Fs



MNG Airlines (MB, Istanbul Airport) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus for the potential purchase of two A350Fs. The agreement was signed on June 18 during the 2025 Paris Air Show.

The freighters "will support both our scheduled and charter operations and give us added flexibility to meet evolving cargo demands, from e-commerce to high-value freight and express logistics,” said Murathan Doruk Günal, the chairman of MNG Airlines.

According to the ch-aviation Commercial Aviation Aircraft Data module, MNG Airlines operates one A300-600F, one inactive A300-600R(F) (with two more wet-leased from affiliate carrier Solinair), two A321-200(P2F)s, two A330-200Fs, and four A330-300(P2F)s.

ORDER - AviLease orders Airbus A350F freighters and A320neo Family aircraft

NEW AIRCRAFT - Airbus completes first A350F wingset in Broughton


Broughton, 30 May 2025 - Airbus is celebrating a major milestone at its Broughton after finishing the first ever set of wings for the new A350 freighter aircraft (A350F).

The wings same line, for the A350F have been designed similarly to the A350 so can be built in the

Engineered as the world's most advanced freighter aircraft, the A350F is designed to meet the evolving needs of the global air cargo market. Similar to the A350 widebody passenger aircraft, the wings incorporate the latest composite material technology, reducing weight and increasing aerodynamic efficiency.

Airbus is building two A350F test aircraft which will undergo flight tests throughout 2026 and 2027. 

The wings will soon be transported via Airbus’ iconic freighter, the BelugaXL, from Broughton to Bremen for final equipping before being sent to Toulouse to be joined to the fuselage of the first test aircraft.

FLEET - Air France-KLM scales down A350F order


Air France-KLM has adjusted its order for new A350F freighters and will take six instead of the previously planned eight units.

The holding's spokesperson confirmed to ch-aviation that the group will be taking three aircraft for Air France and three for Martinair (Netherlands), the cargo subsidiary of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Each carrier was previously supposed to add four aircraft.

"This does not mean any change in strategy. We will continue to operate our hybrid model of freighter aircraft combined with belly cargo on Air France-KLM Group’s passenger aircraft," the spokesperson said.

The news came only a few days after Air France-KLM published its 2024 financial report. It saw cargo volumes increasing 4.1% year-on-year, but the freight business recorded a 3.9% decline in revenue compared to 2023.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Air France is currently operating two B777-200Fs, while Martinair operates two B747-400ERFs and one B747-400(BCF). The group ordered the A350s in two batches, first four for Air France in 2022, followed by four for Martinair in early 2023. The deliveries were scheduled to start in 2026 but will be delayed to 2027.
