FLEET - New Biman Bangladesh CEO mulls major fleet expansion

The newly appointed MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) has plans to grow the fleet from the present 21 aircraft to 47 over the next 11 years, requiring a major investment in new aircraft.

Mohammad Jahidul Islam Bhuiyan, appointed to the top job in May, says his planned expansion will require an additional 32 aircraft.

"Biman needs a total of 47 aircraft for route expansion by 2035," he told The Dhaka Tribune on June 30. "Of the 21 aircraft currently in the fleet, six will be phased out by then."

While Biman's board recently approved the acquisition of four A350-900s after securing funding from the UK's Export Finance scheme, Bhuiyan said Boeing aircraft were also under consideration. "Biman's discussion with Airbus has progressed significantly," he said. "Boeing has also offered its aircraft to Biman. We will review Boeing's proposal. We need them both."

Biman's existing fleet consists of six B737-800s, four B777-300ERs, four B787-8s, two B787-9s, and five DHC-8-Q400s. The airline flies to 33 airports in 17 countries. Bhuiyan said he was keen to open several new routes, including to Malé, Kunming Changshui, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, Seoul Incheon, and Sydney Kingsford Smith.

Dreamliner family pivotal to airline's strategy of operating a modern fleet

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 17, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Biman Bangladesh Airlines (Biman) announced today at the 2019 Dubai Airshow that the carrier is expanding its 787 Dreamliner fleet with two additional airplanes valued at $585 million at list prices.

The purchase – recorded in October as an unidentified order on Boeing's website – complements Biman's fleet of 787-8 jets with the larger and longer-range 787-9 variant. The national flag carrier of Bangladesh says the addition of the 787-9 will help modernize its fleet and expand its international network.

"One of our key priorities is to have a modern fleet with technologically-advanced airplanes that will enable us to expand our international reach," said Air Marshal Muhammad Enamul Bari, Former Chief of Air Staff, Chairman Board of Directors, Biman Bangladesh Airlines. "While we have a good domestic network, we plan to extend our international network to include more destinations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The 787 with its technological superiority, excellent operational performance and passenger experience will enable us to achieve that goal," he added.

The 787-9 is part of a three-member family that offers long range and unmatched fuel efficiency in the 200 to 350 seat market. For Biman Bangladesh, the 787-9 can carry 298 passengers in a standard three-class configuration and fly up to 7,530 nautical miles (13,950 kms) while reducing fuel use and emissions by up to 25 percent compared to older airplanes.

"Biman Bangladesh is showing us the powerful potential of the Dreamliner family. Just last month, the airline launched a new non-stop flight from its hub in Dhaka to Medina, Saudi Arabia. Boeing also provides services that help Biman operate more efficiently. As part of a multiyear agreement, the airline's pilots this year began using the Jeppesen Flite Deck Pro X electronic flight bag (EFB) platform to access mobile charts and navigational information, increasing their situational awareness on the ground and in the air.

As of 28OCT19, the airline’s 777-300ER to operate this route from 30OCT19 to 05JAN20.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines in the first quarter of 2019 filed additional changes to its operation to London Heathrow for the 3rd quarter of 2019. Boeing 787-8 aircraft is now scheduled to operate Dhaka – London Heathrow – Sylhet – Dhaka route from 05JUL19 to 14SEP19, replacing 777-300ER. Previously the airline filed brief 777-300ER service for the first-half of August 2019.

Biman seeks to lease two 777-300ERs

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has issued a tender seeking to lease two Boeing 777-300ERs, which may include mid-life aircraft.

Tender documents show that the carrier is seeking delivery of the aircraft on or before 31 May 2019, and intends to lease them for a minimum of five years. At 31 May, the aircraft must be no older than 13 years, and be delivered fresh from a C-check.

It is seeking the aircraft in a 400-seat, dual-class layout, with a preference for sister-ships from the same lessor.

Proposals are due by 20 January.
Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that the airline already operates four 777-300ERs in its fleet of 14 aircraft.

Biman Bangladesh adds maiden B787-8

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) has taken delivery of its first of four B787-8s on order from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare). Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows S2-AJS (msn 40126) was delivered direct from Everett to Dhaka on Saturday, August 18.

The remaining three aircraft are due to arrive in November this year, followed by October and November 2019.

The Bangladeshi state-owned carrier has since confirmed it will start B787 operations on September 1 with crew training flights to Kuala Lumpur Int'l and Singapore Changi. Thereafter, it will be deployed on medium haul routes starting October 16. Initially the first aircraft will operate to Doha Hamad Int'l 4x weekly (with one weekly flight operating via Chittagong) and to Muscat 3x weekly. Then starting February 17, 2019, the aircraft is scheduled to be exclusively used to Muscat 6x weekly with some flights operating via Chittagong and Sylhet.
Biman's B787s feature a total of 271 seats with 24 in business class and 247 in economy class.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) has outlined its provisional B787-8 deployment plans ahead of the delivery of its first of the type later next month.
Airline Route reports the Bangladeshi state-owned carrier will deploy msn 40126 into service on September 1 on daily services from Dhaka to each of Kuala Lumpur Int'l and Singapore Changi, presumably as crew training flights.
Biman expects its remaining three B787-8s on order from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) to deliver in November this year, followed by October and November 2019.

“We are planning to fly to new destinations like Guangzhou, Colombo Int'l and Malé and resume flights to Delhi Int'l and Hong Kong Int'l," Biman’s General Manager (Public Relations) Shakil Meraz told the Dhaka Tribune last week. "We also have plans for Manchester Int'l, Rome Fiumicino, and Sydney Kingsford Smith which will be expedited once we get the new aircraft."

Biman Bangladesh to add maiden B787 in mid-3Q18

Bangladeshi Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Shahjahan Kamal, has confirmed Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) will take delivery of its first of four B787-8s on order from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) duirng the second half of the year.

Speaking in parliament this week, Kamal was quoted by The New Age newspaper as confirming the first of the type would arrive in August followed by the second in November. Thereafter, he said, the third and fourth will arrive in October and November 2019.

Although no specific operational plans have yet been laid out for the aircraft, Biman has indicated it is planning to start flights to destinations such as Guangzhou, Colombo Int'l, Malé, and Sydney Kingsford Smith while resuming those to Tokyo Narita, Manchester Int'l, Rome Fiumicino, New York JFK, Delhi Int'l, and Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok.

Financing RFP documents indicate the aircraft will be powered by General Electric GEnx-1B64 motors and feature 271 seats with 24 in business and 247 in economy.


At present, Biman's widebody fleet consists of four B777-300(ER)s, two B777-200(ER)s (leased from EgyptAir), and one A330-200 (wet-leased from Wamos Air).
