FLLET / ORDER - LATAM Orders 10 787 Dreamliners to Grow Boeing Widebody Fleet
- Agreement by the region's largest 787 operator includes options for five more 787-9s
- LATAM plans to grow its 787 fleet to 52 airplanes by the end of the decade
SANTIAGO, Chile, Oct. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and LATAM Airlines Group, the leading passenger and cargo airline group in South America, today announced the purchase of 10 787 Dreamliners with options for five more airplanes. As the region's largest 787 operator, this latest order for fuel-efficient 787-9 jets increases LATAM's investment in one of the most modern fleets in Latin America.
LATAM currently operates 37 787-8s and 787-9s and, including this latest order, expects to grow the fleet to 52 Dreamliners by 2030. The 787 enables the airline to maximize capacity on popular routes and launch new routes including its nonstop flight to Sydney, Australia.

"The Boeing 787 is a much more efficient aircraft, allowing us to continue growing sustainably while reducing our carbon footprint as we drive the growth of our operations. This order will enable us to receive at least two aircraft of this model each year from 2025 until the end of the decade," said Ramiro Alfonsín, Chief Financial Officer of the LATAM Airlines Group.
The 787 family offers unmatched fuel efficiency, enabling airlines to reduce fuel use and emissions by 25% compared to the airplanes they replace. The larger 787-9 extends the capacity and range of the Dreamliner family, flying more passengers and cargo farther.
"We appreciate LATAM's continued confidence in the 787 Dreamliner family to further expand its international network from hubs in Santiago, Sao Paulo and Lima," said Mike Wilson, Boeing vice president of Commercial Sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. "As demand for air travel rises, we will continue to support LATAM's growth strategy and goal of connecting Latin America with the world."
Since entering service in 2011, 787 Dreamliners have helped operators launch more than 400 new nonstop routes and avoid more than 173 billion pounds of carbon emissions.
The 2024 Boeing Commercial Market Outlook forecasts air travel in Latin America will more than double over the next 20 years, growing 5% annually. With nearly 2,300 airplane deliveries expected, the region's fleet is projected to grow to more than 3,000 airplanes by 2043.

LATAM group announces an order for five more Boeing 787 Dreamliners to continue advancing its commitment to be more efficient and sustainable. The purchase ranks the South American airline group as the largest operators of Dreamliners in Latin America.
With this order, together with the already scheduled deliveries of this model in the upcoming years, LATAM group will reach a total of 46 Boeing 787 airplanes. Representing an increase of 20 airplanes of this model compared to the pre-pandemic fleet, this investment reinforces the group’s commitment to have one of the most modern and efficient fleets in South America.
Additionally, LATAM group has decided to equip the next Boeing 787s it receives with GEnx engines by GE Aerospace, becoming the first airline in South America to have these engines known for their high performance and efficiency.
“These actions are fully aligned with the commitment to sustainability and brings LATAM closer to the goal of becoming a carbon neutral group by 2050”, said Ramiro Alfonsín, LATAM Airlines Group S.A CFO. “The incorporation of GEnx engines is a decision that provides greater flexibility and options for the expansion of the long-range fleet. Furthermore, increasing the Boeing 787 fleet size will allow the group to operate with two different engine models, known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact, in a complementary way.”
"The 787 Dreamliner is perfectly suited to support LATAM group’s sustainability and operations goals with its exceptional performance, flexible route capability and enhanced passenger comfort”, said Mike Wilson, vice president of Latin America and Caribbean Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We look forward to partnering with LATAM group as it connects Latin America with the world and makes a difference in the communities it serves.”
The GEnx engine family has more than 50 million flight hours since entry into service in 2011 and is the fastest-selling, high-thrust engine in GE history with nearly 3,000 engines in service and on backlog, including spares, according to data from its manufacturer.
“GE Aerospace is pleased to welcome the LATAM Airlines Group to the GEnx engine family,” said Kathy MacKenzie, Vice President, GE Commercial Programs for GE Aerospace. “As LATAM group continues to expand and grow its 787 Dreamliner fleet, we look forward to supporting their continued success every step of the way.”
The 787 Dreamliner family delivers superior fuel efficiency, keeping airline customers competitive. The Boeing 787 uses 25% less fuel and creates 25% fewer emissions than the airplanes they replace. The Boeing 787-9 can fly 300 passengers 7,565 nautical miles (14,010km), according to data from its manufacturer.
The Boeing 787 is designed for comfort, offering a spacious cabin, adjustable LED lighting, the largest windows, improved air quality, smooth ride technology, and ample storage for more enjoyable flying experience, according to data from its manufacturer.
Currently, the airline group has 332 aircraft, 56 Boeing passenger aircraft (models 767, 777 and 787) and 256 Airbus aircraft (models A319, A320, A320neo, A321 y A321neo). In addition LATAM Cargo has 20 cargo aircraft.

LATAM cancels orders for four B787-9s, one B777-200F
LATAM Airlines Group has entered into an agreement with Boeing to cancel outstanding orders for four B787-9s and one B777-200F, subject to the approval of the US Bankruptcy Court.
"As a result of the amendments, LATAM will maintain its purchase orders in respect of two B787-9 aircraft, with proposed delivery dates in December 2021. These arrangements contemplate that LATAM will have no further liability with regards to the terminated aircraft orders," the Latin American group said in its quarterly financial report.
The two parties reached the agreement on April 29, 2021, and the court hearing has been planned for May 19.
According to the details revealed in the group's petition to the US Bankruptcy Court, obligatory under its ongoing Chapter 11 proceedings, the four cancelled B787-9s were due for delivery in 2022 and 2023. The order was initially placed in 2007 by LAN Airlines (LA, Santiago de Chile Int'l) and comprised twenty-six B787s, including ten B787-8s and sixteen -9s. All -8s were delivered to the airline between 2012 and 2014, while deliveries of the ten -9s commenced in 2015, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows.
The airline continues to operate all ten B787-8s, and six of the ten -9s ordered directly from the manufacturer. The remaining four were retired in 2020, the ch-aviation fleets history module shows. However, LATAM Airlines also operates six B787-9s sourced from the order book of lessor ILFC (now AerCap).
In turn, the order for the B777 freighter was placed by TAM Linhas Aéreas (JJ, Sao Paulo Congonhas) in 2007, just before its merger with LAN. It was scheduled for delivery in 2024 and would have become the first B777 operated by LATAM Cargo Brasil.
LATAM Airlines Group itself ordered two B777-200Fs, which were delivered to LATAM Cargo Chile in 2012. However, the carrier subsequently transferred the aircraft to Southern Air in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
