Qatar Airways launch customer for B777-200LRMF

On 1 May 2025, Mammoth Freighters announced that it has completed a succesful first flight of its first B777-200LRMF. The prototype aircraft, N705DN (29742), conducted the flight after conversion at Mammoth's modification partner facility of Aspire MRO at Forth Worth (TX).

At the same time announcing the first flight, Mammoth also announced that Qatar Airways will be the launch customer for its B777-200LRMF conversion program. According to the press-release, the airline has signed an agreement with lessor Jetran for five B777-200LRMFs.

Mammoth Freighters launched its conversion program for the B777-300ER and B777-200LR at the end of 2020. It aimed to have its first conversion certified and delivered at the end of 2023 but this has now slipped to the end of this year. It has established conversion lines with Aspire MRO in Forth Worth (TX) and with STS Aviation Services UK in Manchester.

In total, Mammoth has orders and commitments for 35 conversions. Currently, it has five B777s under conversion with Aspire and two with STS. Confirmed customers so far have been lessor Jetran, DHL and Saudia.

The milestone also marks the 200th 777 Freighter to be delivered.

The triple delivery comes as air freight is playing a pivotal role amid the COVID-19 pandemic – including transporting newly approved vaccines – and is projected to increase more than 4% over the next two decades.

With the arrival of the trio of 777 Freighters, Qatar Airways Cargo now operates 24 of this airplane model along with two 747-8 Freighters. As one of the leading air cargo carriers in the world, Qatar's dedicated freighter fleet serves more than 60 freighter destinations worldwide via its world-class Doha hub and also delivers freight on the belly-hold deck of passenger aircraft to an extensive network.

WASHINGTON D.C, July 10, 2019 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Qatar Airways finalized an order for five Boeing 777 Freighters during a ceremony at the White House on July 9.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump and His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar and included His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways Group and Kevin McAllister, President and CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The purchase, worth $1.8 billion at current list prices, was first signed as a Memorandum of Understanding at the Paris Air Show in June.

Boeing, Qatar Airways Sign Letter of Intent for Five 777 Freighters

WASHINGTON, April 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Qatar Airways today signed a letter of intent to purchase five 777 Freighters, valued at $1.7 billion at list prices. When a purchase is finalized, it will be posted to Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website.

Qatar Airways to take B747 freighter ops in-house

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) has confirmed that itself will operate its incoming B747-8(F) fleet. The airline recently took delivery of its maiden aircraft of the type - A7-BGB (msn 63199) - with a second to follow shortly.
According to CargoFacts, the Qatari carrier will also cease using wet-leased B747-400(F) capacity going forward. It previously leased one such freighter each from SW Italia (IU, Milan Malpensa) and myCargo Airlines (9T, Istanbul Atatürk) in the past. Qatar Airways also operates eight A330-200(F)s and thirteen B777-Fs (all of which are operated with its own crews).

Boeing B747 freighter joins Qatar Airways fleet

Qatar Airways Cargo’s first Boeing B747 freighter has joined the carrier’s expanding fleet having completed its first flight from Doha to Hong Kong. 

Qatar Airways Cargo operates one of the most modern freighter fleets in the sky comprised of Boeing B777 and Airbus A330 freighters. 

The addition of the popular Boeing B747-400BCF heavy cargo aircraft, and its 112.5 tonne capacity, will enable Qatar Airways Cargo to satisfy growing demand for outsized freight transportation from customers investing in significant infrastructure projects in the Middle East and throughout the world. 

Qatar Airways chief officer, cargo, Ulrich Ogiermann said: “A dedicated charter aircraft will enable Qatar Airways Cargo to satisfy growing demand from our customers for capacity in the ad-hoc charter market.

Flexibility in loading is a key feature of the Boeing B747 freighter. 

With a large side cargo door the aircraft can be loaded quickly and easily, whether the cargo is made up of standard containers and pallets or nonstandard, outsized objects.

The airline will welcome a Boeing B747-400F with a nose-loading door to its fleet in October 2015, replacing the existing Boeing B747BCF to provide even more flexibility to satisfy customers’ oversized cargo transportation demands.

Qatar Airways Cargo to add maiden B747 freighter

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) says it will induct a maiden B747-400(F) into revenue service on August 1 to cater to growing demand in the charter market. Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo, Ulrich Ogiermann said in a statement that the aircraft, which features a wide side cargo door, would be replaced by a front-loading B747-400(F) in October 2015.

Qatar Airways Cargo to Launch Freighter Service to LAX

Qatar Airways Cargo has announced it will launch a new freighter service to Los Angeles from April 4, 2015.

It will mark the airline’s fourth US freighter destination after Houston, Chicago and Atlanta, and will be served twice-weekly by Boeing 777 Freighter aircraft. The service will provide 100 tons of cargo capacity per flight, departing Doha on Wednesdays and Saturdays via Luxembourg and Mexico to LAX.

"Los Angeles is a significant global cargo hub, which is reflected by the increasing airfreight volumes seen at Los Angeles Airport," Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo Ulrich Ogiermann said in a statement. 

The LAX freighter will add to the current US destinations currently served by Qatar Airways which include New York, Chicago, Washington, Houston, Dallas and Miami.

"With the new destination, we are able to offer our customers capacity and five-star service into, and out of, this key cargo destination in the United States,” added Ogiermann.

Los Angeles ranks fifth in the US in terms of air cargo volumes processed, and in 2014 LAX handled more than two million tons of cargo with a value of more than $91.6 billion.

Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsay said Qatar Airways new service will also boost the local economy.

"The new service will provide Southern California businesses with more choices to ship between the West Coast, the Gulf/Middle East and beyond," said Lindsey. "It will also open our markets to Qatari businesses."

Qatar Airways said it uplifted more than 49,000 tons of airfreight from the US market in 2014, and will continue to be a key growth market for Qatar Airways Cargo, with the market predicted to add more than one million additional tons of freight before 2018.

In 2014, over 100,000 tons of perishable products were exported by air from Los Angeles, with around 40,000 destined for the Middle East and Europe. Qatar Airways cargo has a dedicated QR Fresh service which provides specific handling and storage facilities for the movement of perishable goods.

777 Freighters key in airline's growth as major world air cargo operator

SEATTLE, Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Qatar Airways have finalized an order for four 777 Freighters, valued at $1.24 billion at current list prices. The airline also has purchase rights for four additional airplanes, which when exercised will bring the combined value to $2.46 billion.

Qatar Airways first announced an intent to order the four 777 Freighters at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow.

DOHA, Qatar – A total of 67 world-class showjumping horses were transported on Qatar Airways Cargo freighters from Liège, Belgium, to Doha, Qatar, for the final round of the 2014 Longines Global Champions Tour season which concluded on 15 November 2014.

The final Grand Prix of this year's series took place at AL SHAQAB, one of the most spectacular equestrian venues in the world, providing a fabulous international stage for the crowning of the overall Longines Global Champions Tour Champion.

The horses along with approximately 20 tonnes of cargo and equestrian equipment per freighter were transported via two Boeing 777F charter operations, with an accompanying eleven grooms per freighter, to ensure care, and safe and secure carriage from Liège to Doha and back for the horses.

Qatar Airways Cargo transports all kinds of animals in accordance with International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations. Unlike pets such as cats and dogs, horses cannot be transported in the lower deck of regular passenger planes and must be flown on dedicated freighters. Prior to the flight, the horses are loaded into “air stables” or “horse stalls” which are special containers that can fit up to three horses side by side so that they are safe and secure while on the aircraft. A typical air stable is 294 cm wide and 232 cm high.

From January 2012 through to October 2014, Qatar Airways Cargo has transported 2,210 horses all around the world. In July 2014, Qatar Airways Cargo flew 53 showjumping horses from Calgary, Canada, to Liège in Belgium where they trained to participate in the World Equestrian Games (WEG) that were held in Normandy in August, while in March 2014 79 horses were transported from Liège to Doha and back, via two freighters for the CHI AL SHAQAB event.

By utilising the fleet of Boeing 777F and Airbus A330F aircraft, Qatar Airways Cargo offers customers worldwide an increasing portfolio of part and full-charter services.

Qatar Airways Cargo completed the transition from a manually handled cargo environment to a fully automated cargo terminal at Hamad International Airport. The brand new terminal contains a 4,200 sq. m live animal facility with dedicated stalls for horses, kennels for pets and separate holding areas for various live animals. The facility is equipped with veterinary laboratory, washing bays, feeding area, hydraulic work stations, sick bays, quarantine area and exercise area. DOHA, Qatar – Qatar Airways Cargo has announced it will begin scheduled dedicated freighter services to two new destinations: Hyderabad (India) and London Stansted (UK), and that it will re-start services to Zaragoza (Spain).

“Our goal is to be a world-class air cargo service provider and in order to achieve that goal, we need to constantly increase frequencies and expand our number of destinations, so that our customers can benefit from our global reach,” said Qatar Airways Chief Officer Cargo Ulrich Ogiermann.

“The addition of these new freighter routes clearly represent yet another milestone in Qatar Airways’ growth strategy,” continued Ogiermann. “And on top of this, we will take delivery of three new freighter aircraft in the course of 2014: two B777F and one A330-F.”

Hyderabad will be the first new destination to be added to the Qatar Airways Cargo network, with the start on 1 April of a twice weekly service, using the A330 freighter. Main exports from Hyderabad will include IT products and pharmaceuticals. Qatar Airways already operates a daily passenger flight between Doha and Hyderabad.

And effective 2 May, Qatar Airways Cargo will begin five weekly Boeing 777 freighter flights to London Stansted. Renowned for its operational capacity and infrastructure quality, Stansted is one of the largest freight hubs in the UK and home to an international cargo operation that transports more than 200,000 tonnes of goods annually to destinations worldwide.



Qatar Airways Cargo is also resuming services to Zaragoza. The scheduled twice-weekly Airbus A330 freighter service will commence on 1 March. Textiles, agricultural products, footwear, automobile and pharmaceuticals are the major commodities expected to ship from Zaragoza.

In addition to the new routes, Qatar Airways Cargo recently strengthened its product portfolio with the launch in January 2014 of two new premium services that optimise the transportation of time and temperature-sensitive goods, including high-value pharmaceutical products and perishables. The new services, QR Pharma and QR Fresh, add to the company’s substantial range of cargo services and further enhance its capacity and flexibility to effectively move sensitive commodities in line with the highest world-class standards.

On 1 December 2013, the first Qatar Airways Cargo shipment was received at the new cargo facility at Hamad International Airport. The enormous, state-of-the-art facility, spanning more than 77,000 square metres, contains a perishables storage area, amongst other key facilities, such as a live animal centre and dangerous goods area. The new self-contained terminal will handle 1.4 million tonnes of cargo per annum.
