Bombardier C Series Aircraft Completes First Commercial Flight into London City Airport
Bombardier Commercial Aircraft celebrated another important milestone for the C Series aircraft program with the first revenue flight into London City Airport, a Swiss International Airlines (SWISS) CS100 jetliner from Zurich.
“We are proud to see the C Series aircraft in SWISS livery landing at London City Airport for the first time. This new milestone continues the momentum propelling the C Series aircraft program,” said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The CS100 aircraft has the perfect combination of steep approach and short field capability as well as longer range. These attributes provide airlines with the opportunity to reach new markets from London City Airport and other challenging airports around the globe, generating an increased level of interest in the C Series program.”
“One of the key aspects of the C Series aircraft, is the fact that it is designed for operations at challenging city-centre airports. Thanks to leading-edge innovation, the C Series is by far the most community and environmentally-friendly aircraft with a very low-noise and low-emission footprint. It also happens to be a more economical and passenger-friendly option than other aircraft in its class,” said Rob Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.
“As part of our fleet modernization plan, we are gradually replacing the Avro aircraft with the C Series and today, we start with our CS100 flight operations from Zurich to London City as the world’s first airline. We are excited to offer our guests the benefits of the C Series such as more comfort on this important route,” said Peter Koch, C Series Fleet Chief, SWISS.
As of now, SWISS will operate regularly to London City Airport from its main hub in Zurich with a CS100 and from Geneva as of summer 2018.
“The inaugural commercial flight of the Bombardier C Series by SWISS is a landmark moment for London City Airport, and the culmination of five years preparation to bring this next generation aircraft into operation,” said Richard Hill, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport. “The introduction of the C Series is an important part of London City’s growth plans and a boon for the UK aviation industry, with its wings manufactured at Bombardier’s Belfast factory. As one of the quietest and most fuel efficient commercial jets in its class, and thanks to its longer range, we can also unlock opportunities for new routes, including the possibility of non-stop services to the east coast of USA, Russia, the Gulf and Middle East.”
The C Series is now the largest passenger aircraft certified to operate from the London City Airport with the longest range. A single-class CS100 aircraft can also fly 2,200 nm (4,074 km) from London City. The CS100 jetliner is the only commercial aircraft that can fly London City-New York non-stop, in an all-business class configuration.
The C Series aircraft is manufactured by the C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership, an affiliate of the Bombardier Commercial Aircraft segment of Bombardier Inc.

Delta to deploy first CS100 to New York
Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ed Bastian has confirmed the carrier's first CS100 will be deployed to New York once deliveries begin in spring 2018.
Speaking during a 2Q 2017 earnings call, Bastian declined to specify the exact routes the aircraft would be deployed on. However, he did note the Bombardier (BBA, Montréal Trudeau) jets would be used to both upgauge capacity on existing routes while eventually opening up new ones.
Initially, the CS100s will be used to replace 76-seater CRJ-700/900s operating "long range" services. "That will free the two class RJs to replace 50-seat airplanes that are continuing to exit the fleet and then we’ll certainly have a few new markets next year," he said. "Having 100-seat long range jets does open up some new market opportunity that we don’t have today."
Delta has orders for seventy-five CS100s with options for fifty more. The carrier has the option of converting a number of the aircraft into CS300s at a later date.

Bombardier C Series Aircraft Completes Landmark Non-Stop Transatlantic Flight from London City Airport to New York John F. Kennedy Airport
- The CS100 would offer the only economically viable commercial option for direct intercontinental flights from London City to John F. Kennedy Airport
- Flight follows the completion of steep approach demonstration flights at London City Airport
- CS100 aircraft expected to receive Transport Canada and EASA steep approach certifications in the second quarter of 2017
- Bombardier Commercial Aircraft confirmed today that a C Series aircraft with a representative payload successfully flew non-stop from London City Airport (LCY) to John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York City. The direct intercontinental flight followed a series of successful flights to demonstrate the CS100 aircraft’s exceptional capabilities for operations to and from LCY, including steep approach landing and short runway performance.
“The C Series aircraft program achieved another significant milestone with the completion of the demonstration tests at LCY. The C Series is the only commercial aircraft that was specifically designed for operations at LCY and we are very proud of its performance. The aircraft smoothly performed all eight take-offs and landings during a two-day period, as planned. This confirms the C Series aircraft’s unparalleled capabilities,” said Rob Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The aircraft is meeting all performance expectations and clearly demonstrates that it is the best performing and most efficient aircraft in the 100- to 150-seat class.”
“It has been a pleasure to welcome the Bombardier CS100 aircraft and its team to London City Airport for the first time, as part of their testing and evaluation process. Following the landmark C Series non-stop flight to JFK, we look forward to the completion of its regulatory certification, followed by entry into commercial passenger operation with SWISS,” added Declean Collier, CEO of London City Airport.
Transport Canada and EASA certifications for steep approach operations with the CS100 aircraft is expected in the second quarter of 2017. Bombardier has extensive experience operating at LCY Airport with various aircraft types, including the Q400 turboprop aircraft, as well as the Challenger 650 aircraft and Global 5000 and Global 6000 business jets.
The CS100 aircraft is the most efficient and economical commercial aircraft allowing airlines to viably offer direct intercontinental flights from LCY Airport to both North America as well as the Middle-East on top of opening numerous new route opportunities within Europe, Russia and Northern Africa, which were not possible with old-generation aircraft.
SWISS is expected to be the first airline to offer service with the C Series to and from LCY later this year.
With the lowest noise and emissions levels of any commercial aircraft in its class, the C Series aircraft is ideal for urban operations and noise-sensitive airports. The CS100 aircraft has a much lower noise footprint compared to other commercial jets, and provides a better quality environment for London residents as it is the quietest commercial aircraft in production.

ZiNG (Canadian) eyes C-Series for local flights
ZiNG Airlines (Moncton) is a Canadian start-up that plans to use locally-manufactured Bombardier CS100 jets to offer point-to-point domestic services from the second quarter of 2017 onwards.
Airline founders Wayne Fernandes and Ben de Mendonca believe the struggling C-Series can alter the dynamics of the Canadian domestic market adding that mainline carriers Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau) and WestJet (WS, Calgary) have made a fundamental error in choosing the A320 and B737 for local operations.
"At its maximum, we envision dethroning WestJet as Canada’s #2 carrier; it is our opinion that their fleet is a mismatch for the skies of Canada given the advent of the CSeries," the pitch said. "Their over dependence on the foreign made 737 was their greatest strength and we intend on making it their greatest weakness."
The start-up, which is currently soliciting investment via a crowdfunding platform, will compete with nascent LCCs Jetlines (Vancouver Int'l), Jet Naked (Calgary), and NewLeaf Airways (Winnipeg Int'l).

Tests Confirm Bombardier C Series Aircraft is Quietest Commercial Jet in its Class
•First production CS100 aircraft readies for function and reliability tests as C Series starts advancing towards final phase of flight testing
•CS100 aircraft visits Toronto to perform demonstration flight for employees and local stakeholders including Toronto-based CSeries and Q400 customer, Porter Airlines
Bombardier announced today that its all-new CS100 aircraft has successfully completed all noise performance testing and preliminary data confirms it is the quietest in-production commercial jet in its class. The aircraft’s noise performance and its outstanding short-field capability make it ideal for city centre operations.
The first production CS100 aircraft will soon commence function and reliability testing, signaling the start of the final flight testing phase. For these tests, the aircraft will operate on a commercial airline type of schedule from key airports in North America.
The announcements were made today on the occasion of a CS100 flight demonstration at Bombardier’s Toronto site where the aircraft performed for employees, local government representatives, business leaders, media and Toronto-based C Series customer and long-time Q400 operator, Porter Airlines. The demonstration aircraft -- flight test vehicle five (FTV5) -- was painted in the livery of launch operator SWISS.
“It’s always a thrill to see the C Series aircraft in a new city and today marks a proud achievement as we experience the aircraft’s Toronto debut," said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “With a solid plan targeting certification by year-end 2015, and entry into service with SWISS in the first half of 2016, we are working with existing and potential customers as they explore opportunities and develop business cases around the C Series jetliners.”
“The excitement around the C Series grows every time we meet or surpass our performance targets,” said Rob Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We announced previously that the C Series aircraft are exceeding their original targets for fuel burn, payload, range and airfield performance. Now we are delighted that the CS100 aircraft’s noise performance tests have confirmed it as the quietest in-production commercial jet in its class.
“The C Series certification program is now over 85 per cent complete,” added Mr. Dewar.
Earlier this year, Bombardier announced that the C Series aircraft's maximum range is confirmed to be up to 3,300 NM (6,112 km), some 350 NM (648 km) more than originally targeted. The aircraft is delivering more than a 20 per cent fuel burn advantage compared to in-production aircraft, and a greater than 10 per cent advantage compared to re-engined aircraft. This means that one C Series aircraft could reduce an operator’s carbon emissions by up to 6,000 tonnes each year. The C Series will also emit 50 per cent fewer NOX emissions than the CAEP 6* NOX emission standards.
Bombardier assesses the environmental impact of its aircraft throughout their life cycles. Through its design, manufacturing, operations and recyclability, the C Series aircraft will be issued an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) upon entry into service – an industry first.

Bombardier CSeries Flight Test Aircraft Move to Kansas
ATW
Bombardier has relocated a second CSeries test aircraft to Wichita, Kansa, from Montreal to take advantage of better weather for flight testing as it works to recover from a 100-day grounding following an engine failure during ground tests.
Test aircraft FTV4 joined FTV3 at the Bombardier Flight Test Center (BFTC) in Wichita Sep. 18, after returning to flight Sep. 15 following the installation of Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofans with modified lubrication systems.
FTV3 has been based at Wichita for avionics testing since shortly after it first flew in March, but has been grounded since the uncontained engine failure on FTV1 in Mirabel, near Montreal, on May 29. FTV3 is expected to return to flight next week.
Bombardier resumed CSeries flight testing Sep. 7 with aircraft FTV2 and, since FTV4 rejoined the test program, has averaged more than three hours flying a day, according to Sylvaine Faust, a close observer of the test program at Mirabel.
Repairs to FTV1's carbon-fiber wing, damaged in the engine incident, are being finalized and the aircraft will return to flight after FTV3, the manufacturer has said. FTV5, the final CS100 test aircraft and first with an interior, is to fly by year-end.
FTV4 is the production-painted performance-test aircraft. Basing the aircraft in Wichita should help avoid the weather-related delays that slowed the startup of CSeries testing after its delayed first flight from Mirabel in September last year.
Using both sites "will help optimize resources needed for the overall certification campaign ... [and] allow us to improve productivity on each aircraft for efficient completion of the required testing, all in accordance with the schedule," BFTC VP Marco Biondo said in a statement.
Bombardier still has more than 2,000 flight hours to complete for certification of the initial 110-seat CS100 variant of the CSeries. The company says entry into service is still planned for the second half of 2015, but several financial analysts are predicting a slip well into 2016.
