Aeroflot reclaims leadership of the Russian market

According to preliminary data published by Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsiya, Russian airlines served collectively 7.2 million passengers, which is down 23 per cent on the pre-crisis level of April 2019. RPKs were down 38 per cent on the same month of the pre-COVID year, at 14.5 billion.

Last year, in April 2020 COVID-19 imposed restrictions resulted in a plunge in passenger numbers. The country’s airlines combined carried 739,000 passengers – roughly one tenth of this year’s April traffic.

After historic 13-month hiatus, Aeroflot reclaimed its traditional prime position in the Russian airlines’ ranking, although its traffic number is still less than a half of the pre-pandemic ‘normal’ due to persistently sluggish international travel. In April Russia’s national carrier served 1.37 million passengers, outperforming its privately-owned rival S7 Airlines. In turn, S7 Airlines’ traffic was roughly level with the pre-crisis numbers – 1.35 million passengers.

Russia’s only low-cost carrier Pobeda Airlines (part of Aeroflot Group) is proceeding with its victorious growth – in April its traffic surged to 1 million passengers, surpassing the ‘normal’ April 2019 result by a third.

Rossiya Airlines (also Aeroflot Group’s subsidiary) carried 636,000 passengers – down 20 per cent on the pre-crisis level. The last in the TOP-5 ranking is Yekaterinburg-based privately-owned Ural Airlines, which lost only 11.5 cent of the April 2019 level, and served 617,000 passengers.

TOP-5 Russian airlines by April 2021 traffic (compared to April 2019)

1. (1) Aeroflot 1.37 mln passengers; –55.8%

2. (2) S7 Airlines 1.35 mln passengers; –0.7%

3. (4) Pobeda 1.00 mln passengers; +31.6%

4. (3) Rossiya 0.63 mln passengers; –20.6%

5. (5) Ural 0.61 mln passengers; –11.5%

In total, between January and April 2021 Russian airlines carried 24.2 million passengers, which is level with the same period of 2020, but 29 per cent less than for the first four months of 2019

Aeroflot resumes taking deliveries of Western-built aircraft

On February 15 Abu Dhabi-based lessor Aurum Leasing Limited delivered a new Boeing 777-300ER wide-body to Aeroflot. The news was revealed by Russia’s State Transport Leasing Corporation (GTLK), whose subsidiary GTLK Middle East is the partner in the Aurum joint venture. This marks the first delivery of a Western-built aircraft to Russian national carrier, which suspended its fleet renewal programme with the onset of COVID-19 induced crisis in April 2020.

The current delivery is the second sale-and-lease-back transaction between Aurum and Aeroflot, after the similar-schemed delivery of an Airbus A350-900 almost a year ago.

The newly added 777 is believed to be the GE90-115B-powered aircraft with registration VQ-BFN (MSN 65310), which made its first flight in March 2020. It was initially due for delivery to Aeroflot in the summer of 2020 – on its web-site Aurum cites the transaction as closed in June 2020. For the last six months the aircraft was stored at Victorville airport in California, from where it returned to Boeing’s Seattle base in early January to prepare for delivery.

Notably, this aircraft offers the highest capacity in Aeroflot’s fleet – its cabin is configured with 427 passenger seats and includes an all-new business class section. The 28 business-class seats in 1-2-1 configuration each with its own access to the isle. There are 24 seats in premium economy (2-4-2) and 375 in economy (3-4-3). This contrasts with Aeroflot’s existing 19 triple-sevens, which can seat 402 passengers – 30 in business class (2-2-2), 48 in premium economy and 324 in economy class.

Aurum Leasing Limited is a joint venture between Trecastle Global Investments LLC and GTLK Middle East FZCO (subsidiary of GTLK Europe), head-quartered in Abu Dhabi, UAE. State-owned GTLK leads Russia’s aircraft leasing market with a 34 per cent share in the combined leasing portfolio of Russian companies. Its total managed fleet is 309 aircraft. Its international arm GTLK Europe and its subsidiary GTLK Middle East are part of a GTLK Global Business platform, which owns 71 aircraft. Among its customers are Emirates, Lion Air, EasyJet, Royal Jordanian, SunExpress.

Aeroflot airline to reinvent its fleet with Airbus’ new generation aircraft only Russia’s flag carrier considers to acquire 80 A350s and 94 A320neo family aircraft through 2028

Aeroflot’s Airbus A350 fleet may grow from one to 81 aircraft in eight years (Pulkovo airport)

An airline industry source close to Aeroflot Group has revealed more details on the revolutionary programme, which slated to place the Russian flag carrier among the world’s top Five-Star airlines. According to this insider information, by 2028 Aeroflot would operate Airbus-only fleet of 175 aircraft, with Airbus A350 as core of its long-haul operations.

The airline’s fleet plan is part of the Aeroflot Group’s new ambitious strategy for the period up to 2028 that was presented to Russian prime minister Mikhail Mishustin by the group’s general director Vitaly Saveliev and approved by the group’s Board of Directors on July 16.

The state-run group, which combines the title carrier Aeroflot with subsidiaries Rossiya Airlines, low-cost carrier (LCC) Pobeda Airlines, targets 130 million passengers annually by 2028, while operating a fleet of 600 jets. The strategy also calls for further differentiation among the group’s airlines in terms of their individual priorities and operating models. As a result Aeroflot would reemerge as a world-class premium carrier with predominantly international operations.

The details of the strategy, which were not then revealed to the public, include the plan to “gradually unify” Aeroflot’s fleet, which by 2028 would consist of Airbus-only aircraft. According to a source 81 Airbus A350s, a mix of -900 and bigger -1000, would serve the airline’s long-haul operations, whilst its medium-haul segment would rely on 94 of Airbus’ re-engined A320neo family aircraft, including 75 A321neo and 19 A320neo.

Aeroflot currently operates 19 Boeing 777-300ERs, 18 Airbus A330s, one A350-900, 47 B737-800s, 74 A320s, 33 A321s and 54 Superjet 100s. To make way for its would-be new generation all-Airbus fleet, the airline plans to phase-out all of its A330s and A320/A321ceos. All B737s will be transferred to LCC Pobeda, while Boeing 777s and Superjet 100s will be moved to Rossiya Airlines.

The traffic target (which will be essentially international one) for Aeroflot airline, without its sister carriers Pobeda and Rossiya counted, is to reach between 35 and 40 million passengers per year by 2028. This is roughly level with the airline’s 2019 total traffic results of 37.2 million passengers, but only 52 per cent of these passengers were served on international routes.

Such significant international traffic increase can be achieved not so much by meeting the needs of Russians travelling abroad, but primarily by the transit of passengers from Southeast Asia to Europe and America, via its Moscow’s Sheremetyevo hub and possibly would-be Siberian regional hub in Krasnoyarsk.
It is safe to assume that the airline will need its fleet of medium-haul Airbus A320neo family aircraft to provide flights in the European and Mediterranean regions.

Aeroflot takes delivery of its first A350-900

Toulouse – Aeroflot, the Russian flag carrier and member of the SkyTeam alliance, has taken delivery of its first A350-900, becoming the launch operator of the latest-generation widebody aircraft in Eastern Europe and CIS. Aeroflot’s A350-900 features a distinctive new livery embracing its almost 100-year heritage. Aeroflot has a total of 22 A350-900 aircraft on order and operates an Airbus fleet of 126 aircraft (107 A320 Family and 19 A330 Family aircraft).

Aeroflot’s A350-900 features a brand new elegant cabin design, offering unrivalled passenger comfort. The aircraft has a spacious three-class cabin layout with 316 seats: 28 private Business Class suites with full-flat seats, 24 Comfort Class with extra legroom and 264 Economy Class. In addition, the latest-generation Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system, HD screens and Wi-Fi connectivity will ensure enhanced experience for all passengers on long-haul flights. Aeroflot will operate its A350-900 from Moscow to a number of destinations including London, Dubai, New York, Miami, Osaka and Beijing.

The A350 XWB offers by design unrivalled operational flexibility and efficiency for all market segments - up to ultra-long haul (9,700 nm). Its Airspace by Airbus cabin is the quietest of any twin-aisle aircraft and offers passengers and crews the most modern in-flight flying experience. The aircraft features the latest aerodynamic design, a carbon fibre fuselage and wings, plus new fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. Together, these latest technologies result in 25% lower operating costs, as well as 25% reduction in fuel burn and CO2 emissions compared with previous-generation competing aircraft – demonstrating Airbus’ commitment to minimise its environmental footprint while remaining at the cutting edge of air travel.

At the end of January 2020, the A350 XWB Family had received 935 firm orders from 50 customers worldwide, making it one of the most successful widebody aircraft ever.

Aeroflot to use A350-900s on new Sheremetyevo – Kansai route

Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo) will use its still to be delivered A350-900 fleet to fly the new 4x weekly route from its Moscow Sheremetyevo hub to Osaka Kansai in Japan from 15 June, the first deployment of the new Airbus addition to the fleet. The Osaka route will become the airline's second service to Japan, joining its existing daily B777-300(ER) service to Tokyo Narita.

The Skyteam carrier had originally earmarked one of its five A330-200s to fly the 3,976 nautical mile (7,364-kilometre) sector, but has subsequently switched the operating aircraft to its factory-fresh A350-900s.

According to the ch-aviation PRO airlines module, the Russian state airline is expecting fourteen A350-900s from the European airframer, with deliveries due to commence in early 2020.

Other A330-200-operated routes which could also be changed to the airline's new type include routes from Sheremetyevo to Havana Int'l, London Heathrow, Los Angeles Int'l, Miami Int'l, Tashkent Islam Karimov, Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, Tenerife Sur and Washington Dulles.

It has already begun to phase out its A330 fleet, with two expected to leave the airline's fleet by the end of 2019. In September, Aeroflot cancelled its order for twenty-two B787s.

Aeroflot to equip its A320neos and MC-21s with high-speed Internet

Passengers flying on 81 of the airline’s A320ceos will be able to surf the web (Aeroflot)

Russian flag carrier Aeroflot is to equip all of its new Airbus A320neos and future Russian-made MC-21 aircraft with Internet access, Kirill Bogdanov, the airline’s deputy general of Information Technology, revealed during the 2019 Wings of the Future trade conference in Moscow.

Aeroflot also intends to install Internet access to 81 of its current generation A320ceos over the next two years.

“It’s crucial to our passengers to have an Internet connection whilst on board our aircraft. At the moment we’re not talking about news browsing, but about giving our clients the opportunity to use messaging systems and e-mails. This is what we can offer now,” explains Bogdanov.

At present, 32 mid-haul aircraft in Aeroflot’s fleet have been installed with the wireless in-flight entertainment system (IFE).

The airline’s 22 Airbus A330 and 19 Boeing 777 long-haul airliners are already equipped with Internet access. Next year, the carrier will begin updating the web systems on board its wide-body fleet, a move which will increase browsing speeds, explains Bogdanov.

Meanwhile, as part of its on-going fleet renewal programme, Aeroflot is planning to take delivery of three A320neos and three A321neo aircraft next year.

Meanwhile, the first delivery of Russia’s advanced narrow-body MC-21 aircraft has been postponed until 2021. Aeroflot, the launch customer of the new type, has committed to 50 of the aircraft (to be leased through Avia Capital Services), with an option for 35 more.

Aeroflot to launch A350 ops in late 1Q20

Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo) will launch scheduled A350-900 operations on March 29, 2020, initially deploying it from Moscow Sheremetyevo to New York JFK, the carrier's online booking system shows.

First reported by AirlineFlyer, the subsequent routes for the new Airbus widebody will be to Beijing Capital (from May 1), Seoul Incheon (from June 1), and Miami Int'l (from June 2).

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, currently, the Russian flag carrier uses a mix of A330-200s, A330-300s, and B777-300(ER)s on these four routes.

Aeroflot has fourteen A350-900s on order from Airbus. The deliveries are scheduled to start in 2020 and continue through 2023. The aircraft will complement the carrier's existing widebody fleet consisting of five A330-200s, seventeen -300s, and nineteen B777-300(ER)s. Subsidiary Rossiya (FV, St. Petersburg) also operates a further five B777-300s and five -300(ER)s for Aeroflot.

Aeroflot postpones the introduction of Airbus A350s for a third time

Russia’s national carrier will take delivery of the first Airbus A350 in 2020, two years behind the initial schedule (Airbus)
Aeroflot is poised to further delay the introduction of its new Airbus A350 aircraft until 2020, Russian Aviation Insider reveals. An investors’ presentation on the group’s nine months 2018 financial results, which included its fleet strategy until 2021, calls for the delivery of the first batch of eight wide-body aircraft to commence in two years’ time.

Originally, the European planemaker’s newest wide-body aircraft were scheduled to be introduced this year, but were then postponed to 2019. In 2021, another seven A350s are expected to be delivered.

Although Russia’s major airline is planning to add a total of 28 A350-900s to its fleet up to 2025, it has signed firm orders for only half the number so far. These aircraft are intended to replace the carrier’s A330s, as it plans to phase out 10 of these earlier-generation wide-bodies by the end of 2021.

By 2021, the number of Boeing aircraft in the entire group’s fleet (which includes Aeroflot, subsidiaries Rossiya Airlines, Pobeda and Aurora) will exceed the number of Airbus models it operates. At the beginning of this year, the group operated 176 Airbus aircraft and 98 Boeing jets.

By the end of 2021, the fleet will boast 149 Boeing planes and 176 Airbus aircraft, partly due to low cost carrier Pobeda Airlines’ aggressive plans to enlarge its Boeing 737 fleet, suggests Russian Aviation Insider.

The group is also undertaking an ambitious plan to increase the number of Russian-made aircraft in its fleet, which will rise from 37 (1 January 2018) to 95 by the end of 2021, primarily through the acquisition of Superjet 100 regional jets. This number also includes the delivery of six locally-produced advanced narrow-body MC-21s in 2020 and seven in 2021 – provided the programme schedule does not suffer from further delays.

The overall, politically motivated, goal is to raise the number of Russian-made aircraft in Aeroflot’s fleet to 190 by 2023. Some of the new SSJ100s are also expected to be introduced into Rossiya’s fleet.

Meanwhile, regarding next year, the group is taking a cautious approach to capacity, with no additional expansion planned in 2019, even though it will be modernising its fleet with the delivery of 24 new aircraft. At the same time, 24 ‘old’ aircraft will be retired.

The 2019 fleet renewal plan includes taking delivery of a total of 24 aircraft – two wide-bodies, 10 narrow-bodies and 12 regional aircraft – whilst retiring an equal number of planes including three wide-bodies, 18 narrow-bodies and three regional aircraft – resulting in a zero net increase in aircraft in its fleet.

This year’s fleet net increase is 36 aircraft (46 aircraft in, 10 out).

In the period up to 2021, it is mostly the regional segment of the fleet that will see considerable growth.

First A350 deliveries to Aeroflot postponed until 2019

The carrier's IFRS report says it will begin receiving the first aircraft in 2019, not in 2018 (Leonid Faerberg / Transport-photo.com)

Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, is expecting to receive its first Airbus A350 widebody airliner in 2019, not in 2018 as originally planned. The carrier’s IFRS report for H1 2017 reads that deliveries are scheduled to continue until 2023.

Aeroflot Deputy CEO Giorgio Callegari said in summer this year that the airline was planning to start receiving the airliners in the last months of 2018. According to him, the carrier will eventually take delivery of 28 A350-900s.

The H1 report only mentions 22 aircraft, which is how many the airline ordered initially (14 A350-900s and eight A350-800s). In early 2017 Aeroflot disappeared from the list of Airbus’s A350-800 buyers, as development of this version was frozen due to low demand. The number of A350-900s ordered by the company remained unchanged at 14 aircraft.

The carrier did not reply to Russian Aviation Insider’s inquiry as to why the changes to the order were not included in its report. Nor did it comment on the fact that the report still mentions the order of 22 Boeing 787s, which was ceded to Russian lessor Avia Capital Services last year. According to the IFRS report, the airline expects to receive these aircraft in 2017.

As of August 1, 2017 Aeroflot’s widebody fleet consisted of 16 Boeing 777s and 22 Airbus A330s. According to Callegari, the A350s will replace the A330s, whose lease term is expiring soon. The airline is also planning to lease an additional six 777s.

Aeroflot Group to acquire six new Boeing 777s

Russia's largest carrier Aeroflot currently has 16 Boeing 777-300ERs in its fleet (Aeroflot)

Russia’s Aeroflot Group intends to acquire six new Boeing 777-300ER (Extended Range) widebodies. The plan will be submitted to the next Board of Directors meeting, which is scheduled for August 31. Together with the expected deliveries of five new Airbus A350s, the planned acquisition would expand the group’s widebody long-range fleet by 20%.

It has not yet been disclosed which of the group’s subsidiary carriers will get the new Boeings. Flag carrier Aeroflot currently operates 16 777-300ERs, while sister company Rossiya Airlines has one 777-200 an five 777-300s.

No details have been revealed as to the possible delivery schedule. Aeroflot’s May 2017 investor presentation suggested that five of the Boeings could enter service with the airline in 2018. The previous contract, for 16 of the type, has now been completed, with all the airliners delivered between February 2013 and June this year.

Another issue to be discussed by the upcoming meeting is Aeroflot’s plan to sell four Airbus A321s, serial numbers 3267 (VP-BUM), 3334 (VP-BUP), 4099 (VQ-BEE), and 4148 (VQ-BEI). All four are equipped with CFM International engines. According to open sources, Aeroflot has been the sole operator of these aircraft, and their age ranges from 7.7 to 9.9 years. The average age of Aeroflot’s fleet currently stands at 4.3 years.
The total fleet of Aeroflot Group, whose subsidiaries also include Pobeda Airlines and Aurora Airlines, is currently nearing 300 aircraft (not including the six Antonov An-148s and a single An-24 that the group is subleasing). Plans for this year included taking delivery of 59 airliners and phasing out 19. The planned numbers for 2018 are 45 and 17 aircraft, respectively.
