FLEET - UK's Jet2 to wet-lease summer capacity due to Airbus delays

Jet2 (United Kingdom) (LS, Leeds/Bradford) plans to wet-lease in additional capacity for the IATA northern summer season after production delays at Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) leave the carrier short of aircraft, it said.

The airline expected to take delivery of 14 new owned and leased A321-200NX aircraft by the end of Summer 2025, upping its A321neo fleet to 23 units, parent holding Jet2 plc revealed in a February 19 trading update on the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

"Unfortunately, a number of these aircraft will be delayed from their agreed delivery dates and consequently we expect to incur additional operational costs to cover aircraft gaps in the peak summer flying programme," it added.

Jet2 did not immediately respond to queries from ch-aviation on who it will be leasing capacity from or what types it is seeking. It has previously wet-leased in capacity from the likes of Croatia's ETF Airways, Slovakia's AirExplore, and UK's Titan Airways.

The airline first placed an order for thirty-six A321neo, with options for an additional twenty-four, in August 2021, but has since gradually increased its commitment. It currently has 134 unfilled orders for A321neo directly from Airbus. The aircraft are due to replace the airline's fleet of B737-300s and B737-800s.

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Jet2's fleet comprises 118 aircraft, including three A321-200s, fourteen AC321-200NX, one A330-200 wet-leased from AirTanker, seven B737-300s, and ninety-three B737-800s (with one still to be delivered). The UK leisure holding was the last UK-based operator of passenger-configured B757-200s, with its last three units being placed into long-term storage in January 2025.

In total, the airline has firmed-up options on twelve more A321neos, taking the total number ordered to 110.Jet2 took delivery of its first A321neo in March 2023 and currently has five in the fleet. Next to these, it also flies with two leased A330-200s, seven Boeing B737-300s, 86 B737-800s, and seven B757-200s.Illustration by Airbus.

NEW AIRCRAFT - Jet2 takes first A321neo, wet-leases two A321ceo

Jet2 (United Kingdom) (LS, Leeds/Bradford) has taken delivery of its first A321-200NX and sourced an additional two A321-200s under a two-year seasonal wet-lease contract.

G-SUNB (msn 11379) was registered in the United Kingdom on March 31, 2023, and delivered from Hamburg Finkenwerder to East Midlands for final repainting on April 1. On April 5, it was repositioned to Manchester International, but has yet to enter revenue service, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows.

The aircraft is the first of sixty-three A321-200NX ordered by Jet2 plc from Airbus. The leisure-oriented low-cost carrier ordered the initial batch of 34 aircraft in August 2021 but has since gradually upped its commitment. The aircraft will replace Jet2's ageing fleet of B737-300s (currently numbering seven aircraft with an average age of 25.1 years), B737-800s (84 aircraft with an average age of 13.7 years), and B757-200s (eight units, 32.5 years old on average).

However, as the airline strives to add more capacity for the busy summer season, it has also signed a long-term wet-lease commitment with Titan Airways (ZT, London Stansted) covering two A321-200s. G-POWN (msn 3830) started operating on behalf of Jet2 out of London Stansted on March 31, 2023. The other unit, G-POWU (msn 3708), has yet to be deployed into service on behalf of the LCC. Titan Airways said both wet leases would run through early November 2023 and will repeat during the Summer 2024 season.
Jet2 also operates a small in-house subfleet of three A321-200s, as well as one more unit of the type wet-leased from Hi Fly (5K, Beja)

Jet2.com increases order for the A320neo Family to 98

Jet2.com has placed an incremental order for 35 A320neo aircraft taking its total commitment to the Family to 98 aircraft.

The latest agreement comes just over a year since Jet2.com placed its first order for 36 A321neo in August 2021, followed by further commitments thereby securing its growth needs as demand continues to outpace supply even in the outer years.

The A320neos will be configured for 180 seats with an Airspace cabin featuring innovative lighting, new seating products and 60 percent larger overhead baggage bins for added personal storage.

The A320neo Family incorporates new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver more than 20 percent fuel and CO 2 savings, as well as a 50 percent noise reduction. Passengers are benefitting throughout the trip from Airbus’ award-winning Airspace interior, which brings the latest cabin technology to the A320 Family. By the end of September 2022, the A320neo Family had accumulated over 8,500 firm orders from more than 130 customers worldwide.

The airline also secured purchase options on another 24 aircraft. Delivery of the 36 planes is scheduled between 2023 and 2028.

The low-cost airline will outfit the aircraft with 232 seats in a single class lay-out. Jet2 will use the A321neos as replacement for its last eight B757s as well as replacement and upgrading capacity of its (oldest) B737s in the fleet. Jet2 suspends flight operations until late March

The latest COVID-19 travel restrictions have forced the British leisure carrier to suspend service.

Jet2.com has grounded all flights until the end of March as the number of COVID-19 cases in the UK continues to climb.

The tour operator and airline initially suspended flights to the Canary Islands, Madeira and Turkey until Feb. 12, but the cancellation has now been extended across its entire network up to and including March 25.

The decision comes after England’s third national lockdown came into force last week. All of the UK is now under stricter rules to curb the spread of the virus, with Northern Ireland, Wales and the majority of Scotland also in lockdown.

Passengers affected by the suspension will be issued with a refund, Jet2 said in a statement. The airline added that it would review the situation from March 26 onwards and update its schedule “as appropriate,” leaving open the possibility that its Easter holiday flights will still operate.

According to data provided by OAG Schedules Analyser, Jet2 operated more than 17,300 seats across 46 routes during this week a year ago.

However, the carrier said there remains “a lot of demand” for leisure travel. The company has already put its summer 2022 schedule on sale, which will see the airline operate 339 routes from its 10 bases in the UK.

Among them are three new destinations from Bristol (BRS), the company’s newest base which opens in April, as well as three from Edinburgh (EDI).

Earlier this month, Irish ULCC Ryanair said it would likely not operate flights to and from Ireland or the UK in the near future, citing the latest COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

“Ryanair will significantly cut its flight schedules from Jan. 21, which will result in few, if any, flights being operated to/from Ireland or the UK from the end of January until such time as these draconian travel restrictions are removed,” the airline said.

Tour operator Tui has also canceled all holidays until mid-February, while easyJet has made significant cuts to its network and is operating just a small number of domestic and international routes.

As well as a UK-wide ban on leisure travel, the UK government is introducing a pre-departure testing requirement for all inbound international passengers to England from Jan. 15. Upon arrival, travelers will have to present a negative COVID-19 test taken up to 72 hours prior to departure.

The move to introduce testing without removing quarantine restrictions has been criticized by IATA director general Alexandre de Juniac. Speaking on Jan. 12, he said the UK government—as well as governments in Canada, Germany and Japan—have chosen policy measures “that will shut down travel.”

“This approach tells us that these governments are not interested in managing a balanced approach to the risks of COVID-19,” de Juniac said.

“They appear to be aiming for a zero-COVID world. This is an impossible task that comes with severe consequences—the full extent of which it would be impossible to calculate.”

Jet2 accelerates B737 freighter fleet phase out

Jet2 (LS, Leeds/Bradford) has ended dedicated B737 freighter operations after its only remaining B737-300(F) was withdrawn from commercial service this week.

According to Flightradar24 ADS-B data, G-CELW (msn 23659) was ferried to Kemble Cotswold Airport on Tuesday, January 17.
Jet2 used the aircraft, along with its dwindling fleet of B737-300(QC)s, to carry out overnight flights throughout the United Kingdom for and on behalf of Royal Mail under a contract which expired this month.
The leisure specialist did not participate in the tender for a new Royal Post contract running from January 2017 through to 2022. The tender was ultimately awarded to Sweden's West Atlantic Group.
As it stands, Jet2's mainline fleet will consist of twenty B737-300s, twenty-nine B737-800s and eleven B757-200s used to connect various centres around the United Kingdom with leisure destinations in the Mediterranean, Central Europe, and the United States.
