FLEET - Breeze Airways ends E190 ops, moves to all-A220 fleet

Breeze Airways (MX, Salt Lake City) has officially operated its last E190 flight, marking the end of its transition to an all-A220-300 fleet.

The flight, onboard N120BZ (msn 19000115), took place on September 7 between Orlando International and New Orleans International.

Breeze launched commercial services in May 2021 with a fleet of ten E190s and three E195s. The Embraer regional jets played a pivotal role in Breeze’s expansion and growth, but in recent years the company began charting its move to an all-Airbus fleet.

To date, the carrier has taken delivery of 57 of its 90 firm A220 orders, with 30 options still remaining. David Neeleman, founder and CEO of Breeze Airways, said in a statement that the company’s long-term strategy “has always been to leverage the strengths and efficiencies of the Airbus A220-300 to help us cost-effectively scale our unique business model.”

FLEET - TrueNoord delivers three factory-new Airbus A220s to Breeze Airways

“This transaction introduces the first Airbus aircraft into the TrueNoord fleet, marking another important strategic milestone for the Company.” Anne-Bart Tieleman, Chief Executive Officer, TrueNoord.

Specialist regional aircraft lessor, TrueNoord, has delivered three factory-new Airbus A220-300 aircraft to Breeze Airways under a long-term sale-and-leaseback agreement. This landmark transaction marks TrueNoord’s first Airbus deal and the largest aircraft type to join its portfolio to date. All three aircraft were delivered to the American low-cost carrier in February 2026.

Maarten Grift, TrueNoord Sales Director Americas, comments: “We are very pleased to support our existing customer Breeze with the lease of these modern and highly efficient A220s. The aircraft type is central to Breeze’s strategy of transitioning to a single-type fleet and expanding its network across under-connected Tier 2 and Tier 3 city pairs. The right-sized seat capacity and lower operating costs of the type are enabling Breeze to profitably serve routes that larger narrowbody jets cannot sustain. A trend we are increasingly seeing across the Americas as operators seek to expand or renew their fleets with new-generation aircraft.”

“Partners like TrueNoord enable us to continue our mission of providing affordable and convenient air service to our Guests across 86 cities in the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean,” said Trent Porter, Breeze Airways’ Chief Financial Officer.

Paul Murphy, TrueNoord Chief Financial Officer, adds: “These deliveries reflect TrueNoord’s disciplined approach to capital allocation, strengthening our portfolio with assets that support long-term financial resilience and operational efficiency for our partners.”

“This agreement underscores TrueNoord’s commitment to supporting innovative operators, such as Breeze, with next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft,” comments Anne-Bart Tieleman, TrueNoord CEO. “The A220 complements TrueNoord’s existing Embraer E2 order book and highlights our appetite for new generation 100-150 seat class aircraft. This important announcement sets the tone for the months ahead as we continue on our strong upwards growth path into 2026 and beyond.”

Airbus delivers 100th A220 from Mobile facility, marking milestone for Alabama’s aerospace industry

MOBILE, Alabama — Alabama’s aerospace industry reached new heights as Airbus announced the delivery of the 100th A220 aircraft produced at its U.S. Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, marking a major milestone for the site and for the state’s thriving aviation sector.

The landmark aircraft, delivered to Breeze Airways, symbolizes the rapid growth and success of the A220 production line in Mobile.

Airbus launched A220 manufacturing at the Alabama facility in 2019 and opened a dedicated final assembly line for the aircraft at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley the next year, following a significant investment project.

In a little over five years, the Mobile operation has gone from breaking ground on the new line to delivering its 100th A220 aircraft — a testament to the strength of Alabama’s skilled workforce and the momentum of its aerospace ecosystem.

“Reaching this milestone underscores the dedication and team spirit that have defined our journey,” Daryl Taylor, Senior Vice President, Commercial Aircraft Operations for Airbus in the U.S., said in a statement shared on social media. “Way to go, team.”

In a Facebook post, Airbus cheered the development: “Congratulations to our Mobile team — 100 A220s produced in just five years is a pretty fantastic accomplishment!”

The A220, originally developed by Bombardier and adopted by Airbus in 2018, is known for its fuel efficiency, passenger comfort and versatility — making it a favorite among airlines like Delta, JetBlue and Breeze.

On social media, Breeze celebrated the delivery.

“We love that new plane smell,” the airline said. “The 100th Airbus A220 just rolled off the line in Mobile, AL, and lucky for us, it’s joining the Breeze fleet! We’re proud to fly one of the newest birds in the sky.”

The aircraft is assembled in both Mobile and Mirabel, Canada, but Airbus’ Alabama site has played an increasingly prominent role in meeting demand, particularly for U.S.-based carriers.

Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, applauded the achievement and the team behind it.

“This milestone reflects not only the incredible capabilities of Airbus but also the strength of Alabama’s workforce,” Secretary McNair said. “The success of the A220 line in Mobile proves that when global industry and local talent come together, we can achieve great things.

‘We’re proud that Alabama plays such a vital role in shaping the future of commercial aviation,” she said.

Airbus’ operations in Mobile support over 2,000 jobs and reinforce Alabama’s status as a key player in the global aerospace sector. In addition to the A220, Airbus also produces A320 Family aircraft in Mobile, and the facility continues to grow with an ongoing expansion and additional hiring under way.

With the delivery of its 100th A220, Airbus is signaling that Mobile is not just a manufacturing site — it’s a cornerstone of the company’s long-term U.S. strategy and a driver of innovation and economic impact for the state of Alabama, Secretary McNair added.

ROUTES - Breeze Airways eyes transatlantic, Hawai’i ops in 2H25

Breeze Airways (MX, Salt Lake City) is planning to operate transatlantic flights to Europe by autumn 2025, while also looking to increase its footprint on the United States West Coast and reach Hawai’i, chief executive David Neeleman said in an interview with Airline Geeks.

He identified Ireland and the United Kingdom as the most likely destinations across the Atlantic. Breeze is also exploring international destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, such as Cancún. Neeleman said these could offset the seasonality of European routes. “So maybe we will fly Cancún all winter and Ireland all summer,” he explained.

However, the airline’s plans to serve Europe and Hawai’i hinge on obtaining Extended-range Twin-engine Operations Performance Standards (ETOPS) certification for the airline's fleet of A220-300s. While flights to Europe are technically possible without such authorisation, using the circuitous northerly route, Hawai'i can only be served from the mainland with an ETOPS-approved aircraft.

The airline is currently seeking flag carrier status from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a designation required to secure international traffic rights. Earlier this year, Breeze anticipated receiving the designation in time for the Winter 2024/2025 season. According to the latest timeline, the carrier aims to begin international operations by autumn 2025.

In a statement to ch-aviation, a spokesperson for Breeze said: "Flag status and ETOPS will happen sequentially, so we hope to have an update on the former in the first half of 2025 and ETOPS sometime thereafter." They added that the company is currently looking at several potential routes when those are approved, "however, nothing is set in stone yet. Until then, we’re focused on maintaining steady growth in the markets we already serve."

Breeze Airways currently operates a fleet of 48 aircraft, including thirty-five ACV!220300s, ten E190s, and three E195s on an exclusively domestic network.

Breeze Airways unveils first of 80 Airbus A220s on order

Breeze Airways (Breeze) unveiled its first of 80 A220-300 aircraft on order during a preview event at the Airbus A220 final assembly line in Mobile, Alabama. The aircraft is expected to be delivered to Breeze in the coming weeks.
Breeze’s A220-300 cabin is configured in a comfortable two-class 126 seat premium cabin layout comprising 36 business and 90 economy seats fitted with in-seat power and USB ports for all passengers.
Breeze will offer superior single-aisle comfort on board its brand new A220s, such as the widest seats, the largest windows and more overhead stowage space per passenger.
The A220’s superior efficiency will support the new airline’s business objectives to deliver a great travel experience to its passengers, with low fares and high flexibility. Breeze is expected to provide non-stop service between underserved routes across the U.S. at affordable fares - offering point-to-point flights from smaller secondary airports, bypassing hubs for shorter travel times.
Breeze started airline operations in May 2021. This first A220 is expected to enter service in Q2 2022.
The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation geared turbofan engines. With a range of up to 3,450 nm (6,390 km), the A220 gives airlines added operational flexibility. The A220 delivers up to 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. In addition, the aircraft noise footprint is reduced by 50% compared to previous generation aircraft - making the A220 a good neighbour around airports.
As of the end of September 2021, over 170 A220s have been delivered to 12 operators worldwide.

Breeze Airways – All New US Airline Launches with 13 Embraer Jets

Tampa, Florida, 27th May 2021 – Breeze Airways, a new US carrier from JetBlue founder David Neeleman, launches today with a planned fleet of 13 Embraer jets. The first flights operate between Charleston, SC, Tampa, FL and Hartford, CT, starting May 27, with remaining destinations to be added each week through July 2021. Breeze will take delivery of all 13 leased jets through the summer, to reach an initial fleet of 10 E190s, and 3 E195s. With plans to grow the fleet further before the end of the year.

As the founder of both JetBlue and Azul airlines, Mr Neeleman’s experience of growing airlines and routes using Embraer E-Jets is legendary. Breeze is creating an airline that offers a ‘Seriously Nice’ experience, with low fares and high flexibility, serving destinations from four main airports - Tampa, FL; Charleston, SC; New Orleans, LA; and Norfolk, VA.

David Neeleman, CEO and Founder of Breeze Airways, said, “Embraer’s E-Jets are phenomenal at building out new airlines, and growing and supporting new routes. They are the masters at doing this, as proven by my previous airline ventures – and, no middle seats! The flexibility the family of aircraft provides, allows us to meet fluctuating demand profitably – exactly what all airlines need right now. Having the E-Jets as a core part of our team gives me enormous confidence.”

Mark Neely, Vice President Sales, Americas, said, “It’s great to be part of another Neeleman airline project. Launching Breeze with an Embraer fleet is an endorsement of the value these aircraft bring, allowing Breeze to establish new point-to-point routes in underserved markets, bringing much needed connectivity, protecting yields, managing demand, and doing so profitably.”

The E190 jets will be configured to seat 108 guests while the E195 aircraft will have 118 seats.

Earlier this month Breeze signed a long-term Pool Program Agreement Embraer to support a wide range of repairable components for the airline’s E190s and E195s fleet. The agreement included full repair coverage for components and parts, as well as access to a large stock of components at Embraer’s distribution center, which will support the start of the airline’s operation.

Breeze Airways to use E190/5s for short-haul, A220s for long

Breeze Airways (MXY, Salt Lake City) plans to continue operating a dual-manufacturer fleet in the future with both the E190/E195s and the A220-300s serving different types of routes, founder David Neeleman said during the virtual World Aviation Festival.

The start-up is "at the tail end" of its certification process and expects to launch during the Summer 2021 season. Initially, it will operate only the Embraer aircraft, as the first A220-300 is scheduled for delivery in October 2021, with service entry slated for late 2021 or early 2022.

While the carrier's network remains a mystery, Neeleman reaffirmed that Breeze Airways would focus on thinner, underserved markets. He revealed that around 80% of the start-up's operations would be on currently unserved routes. The network will be geared towards the leisure market following the COVID-induced market realignment.

Breeze has secured a fleet of seventeen Embraers for its initial ramp-up phase. It will lease fifteen E190s from Nordic Aviation Capital, while two E195s are owned by Elevate Capital Partners and sub-leased via Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras, another of Neeleman's business ventures. So far, one E190 and the two E195s have been delivered.

Neeleman underlined that while traditionally, "the Achilles heel [of the Embraers] has always been ownership and maintenance cost," these costs have now plummeted by 70%. He also indicated that the relatively large fleet of E190/E195s used in the early stages would reduce maintenance costs down the line, as surplus aircraft will be available for part-out to support the units remaining in active service.

Breeze will use the Embraer regional jets predominantly on shorter, one- to two-hour sectors. In turn, Breeze Airways plans to use the A220s on longer routes as a lower cost-per-trip alternative to A321-200NX(LR)s. Neeleman stressed that despite the newer type's higher capital costs, its fuel burn would be lower than that of the E190/E195s, even though the A220 is a larger aircraft.

Breeze Airways has sixty A220-300s on firm order from Airbus.

Neeleman is continuing to lobby Airbus to offer auxiliary fuel tanks as an option on the A220s, which would increase their range by some 600 nautical miles (1,110 kilometres) to around 4,000 nautical miles (7,410 kilometres), thus expanding the list of potential routes they can serve. Breeze Airways is also contemplating using the A220s on services to Europe and South America. The latter, Neeleman hinted, could be operated in partnership with Azul, which would make flights to secondary cities more viable.

Breeze Airways nears full certification

Breeze Airways (MXY, Salt Lake City) is in the home straight in terms of its certification drive after the US Department of Transportation (DOT) finalised a show order giving it the go-ahead to operate scheduled flights throughout the United States.

With its economic authority now secured, the start-up must still complete its Part 119 air carrier certification to conduct Part 121 operations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which, company sources told ch-aviation, should occur in the "next few weeks".

The David Neeleman-backed project has secured a fleet of fifteen E190s, leased from Nordic Aviation Capital, alongside two E195s leased from Elevate Capital Partners through Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Sao Paulo Viracopos). It also has sixty A220-300s on order from Airbus Canada the first three of which are due to deliver by year-end.

According to the DOT's order, Breeze must obtain the DOT's consent before growing its fleet beyond 22 aircraft as it must first demonstrate its fitness to conduct such operations.

Once commercially active, Breeze Airways will focus on point-to-point routes between secondary US cities.

Utah's Breeze Airways further revises launch plans

To ensure a late 2020 launch, Breeze Airways (MXY, Salt Lake City) says it has entered into a tentative agreement with Compass Airlines (United States of America) (CP, Minneapolis/St. Paul) to acquire its interstate scheduled air transport authorities. Compass Airlines was a production carrier specialising in carrying out E175 flights for US mainline carriers. However, after it lost its key contract with Delta Air Lines (DL, Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson) in 2019, and coupled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Trans States Holdings elected to close Compass in April this year. With its Part 121 Air Carrier Certificate (ACC) suspended, Compass's fleet of Embraer Regional Jets was subsequently moved to sister carrier Republic Airways (YX, Indianapolis Int'l).

In a filing to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Breeze Airways said that under its provisional Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) with Compass dated July 6, Breeze will acquire from Compass, the relevant assets needed to allow it to make use of its scheduled interstate authority and to allow the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue Breeze with the operating authority equivalent to that held by Compass.

"Compass will not be transferring its Open Skies Authority, any of its Mexico authority, or any other international authority," Breeze said. "The closing of the transaction is expressly conditioned on, among other things, the Department's approval of the certificate transfer to Breeze and FAA's issuance of new operating authority to Breeze enabling Breeze's E190/E195 operations. By utilising Compass's manuals, resources, and processes, FAA certification will be completed more efficiently and, accordingly, the introduction of new service to underserved markets will be accelerated."

In anticipation of the transfer, Breeze says it is working closely with Compass and FAA officials at Compass's supervising Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) and Certificate Management Office (CMO) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As such, if the deal is approved and finalised by US regulators, Breeze said it would withdraw its current application for scheduled interstate authority, lodged in February.

Under its plan, Breeze plans to begin commercial flight operations in mid-October from its Minneapolis/St. Paul base. However, instead of operating charter flights for three months before introducing scheduled service in the winter of 2020 as it had proposed in its February DOT filing, Breeze now plans to initially operate charter services for six months before venturing into the scheduled services niche in May of 2021. Breeze said its aim of providing nonstop services to underserved markets across the United States remains unchanged.

As its scheduled service starts and ramps up, so charter operations will represent a decreasing portion of Breeze's business but will remain an important complement to its scheduled service.

From the period covering months 7 - 10 of operations (approximately May 2021 - August 2021), Breeze plans to use its incoming Embraers to introduce scheduled service to 15 underserved cities, most of which lie along the US Atlantic Coast, the South, Texas, and the Midwest. After that, in month 11 of operations (approximately September 2021), Breeze expects to receive its first A220 aircraft. Breeze plans to continue service with flights from existing destinations, though certain legs will utilise the new aircraft in place of its E190/195s. In month 12 of operations (approximately October 2021), Breeze foresees the introduction of transcontinental flights linking the US Atlantic Coast to California.

In terms of fleet, Breeze says it has taken advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to source more "favourably" priced aircraft on the leasing market. As such, rather than completing a proposed leasing transaction with Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Sao Paulo Viracopos) - an airline also controlled by entrepreneur David Neeleman - signed earlier in the year, Breeze signed a term sheet with Nordic Aviation Capital on June 19 to lease fifteen E190s. The term sheet "offers significantly better terms than the original term sheet signed with Azul for E195 aircraft", it said. The first of the E190s is scheduled to deliver to Breeze in August 2020 with the 14 remaining aircraft due over the course of the ensuing eight months. In the long term, Breeze expects to operate E190/E195 aircraft alongside a fleet of sixty A220-300s.

Concerning its Airbus order book, Breeze said that with the delay of the launch of its scheduled services, Airbus has agreed to delay delivery of the first A220 by six months - until August 2021. The second A220 is now due in September 2021 with approximately one aircraft per month due after that beginning in January 2022. All are to be produced at Airbus's Alabama plant.

In terms of fleet ownership, Breeze has already signed an agreement with GECAS to finance nine of its first eighteen A220 deliveries. On delivery to the carrier, these aircraft are to be sold to GECAS and leased back subject to a 12-year operating lease agreement. Breeze said it is currently in talks with various lessors to execute further sale-and-leaseback transaction(s) for the remaining nine of the first eighteen A220 deliveries.

"Breeze expects to conclude the majority of the additional sale-and-leasebacks before September 30, 2020, under substantially equivalent terms to the initial GECAS transactions," it said. "Combined, these transactions will secure Breeze's A220 financing requirements through December 2022. Breeze has yet to determine its preferred financing strategy for subsequent A220 deliveries but is likely to consider a combination of operating leases and debt financing. As part of the purchase agreement, Airbus has committed backstop financing for a portion of the A220 order book."

Incorporated in Delaware, Breeze Airways is controlled by US airline entrepreneur David Neeleman (82.1%) with the remaining 17.9% controlled by a variety of management and private company investors all of whom are US nationals. Its current share capital is valued at USD23,856,241.

To raise additional capital needed to execute its business plan, Breeze is negotiating another equity financing round that will raise approximately USD45 million through the sale of common shares to approximately four US investors.

"A lead investor has been identified, and additional commitments are being secured," it said. "Breeze anticipates closing the financing transaction in July and will supplement this [DOT] application with the specific ownership information and third-party verification of the funds available as a result of the capital raise."

Breeze Airways officially announces 2020 launch

David Neeleman's new start-up Breeze Airways (Salt Lake City) has confirmed it plans to launch by the end of 2020 initially serving secondary cities in the United States with no direct connections at this time.

"Breeze will fly non-stop service between places currently without meaningful or affordable service. 20 years ago, we brought humanity back to the airline industry with jetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK). Today, we’re excited to introduce plans for the World’s Nicest Airline," CEO and President David Neeleman said.

The airline has already commenced certification but will not announce any routes before obtaining its AOC and OL. Once certification is completed and sales have launched, Breeze Airways intends to start flying within 60 days.

Breeze has ordered sixty A220-300s with deliveries starting in April 2021 and plans to sublease up to twenty-eight E195s from Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, Sao Paulo Viracopos), Neeleman's Brazilian airline. The Embraer regional jets will start delivering in May 2020. The final number of E195s subleased from Azul depends on whether LOT Polish Airlines exercises its priority option; if it confirms all fourteen of them, Breeze will only be able to take 21 aircraft.

The start-up has yet to unveil more specific details of its business plan, although Neeleman shared some information in an interview with the Cranky Flier blog. In it, he said that the airline was looking at some 500 city pairs, including potential flights to Hawaii, Europe, and South America.

Neeleman clarified that the E195s will be used mostly on shorter routes, up to 2-2.5 hours, as well as for charters, while the A220s could be used to operate trans- and intercontinental routes. Breeze Airways plans to retain both types going forward. The airline's network will mimic the strategy of Allegiant Air with its focus on point-to-point services and, at least initially, will be largely leisure-oriented with frequencies not exceeding daily.

The airline plans to have premium class in its aircraft, although it also wants to retain flexibility and be able to quickly convert the aircraft to an all-economy configuration.

Breeze Airways does not plan to cooperate with any airlines in the US, although it could do so on international routes. Neeleman named Azul in Brazil and TAP Air Portugal in Portugal as potential partners.
