ORDER - EVA Air expands fleet with more A350-1000 and A321neo aircraft

Taiwan’s EVA Air has placed a firm order for six long-range A350-1000s and three single-aisle A321neo aircraft, finalising a commitment announced by the airline in March 2025.

Toulouse, France, 7 April 2025 – Taiwan’s EVA Air has placed a firm order for six long-range A350-1000s and three single-aisle A321neo aircraft, finalising a commitment announced by the airline in March 2025. The new orders will bring EVA Air’s backlog of aircraft to be delivered to 24 A350-1000s and 18 A321neo aircraft.

“The new additions to our fleet reaffirm our commitment to sustainable aviation and delivering an exceptional travel experience. Both the A350-1000 and A321neo set a high standard in their respective categories, offering remarkable efficiency and comfort to our passengers. As we move forward with our fleet and network expansion plans, we look forward to leveraging the aircraft’s extended range and efficiency to strengthen our market position,” said Clay Sun, President of EVA Air.

“EVA Air’s new orders underscore the enduring appeal of the A350-1000 Long Range Leader as the benchmark for intercontinental operations, and the A321neo as a leader in regional efficiency. We deeply value EVA Air’s confidence in these latest generation aircraft and stand ready to support their seamless integration into the airline’s fleet for future success," said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business.

The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient widebody aircraft and has set new standards for intercontinental travel. It offers the longest range capability of any commercial airliner in production today. Powered by the latest generation of Rolls-Royce engines, the aircraft is capable of flying up to 9,700 nautical miles / 18,000 kilometres non-stop, using 25% less fuel than previous generation types and with a similar reduction in carbon emissions.

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A350 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus is targeting to have its aircraft up to 100% SAF capable by 2030.

The A350 Family has received more than 1,360 orders from 60 customers worldwide, with more than 640 aircraft currently in the fleets of 38 operators, flying primarily on long-haul routes.

The A321neo is part of the A320neo Family, incorporating the latest technologies including new generation engines, Sharklets and cabin efficiency enablers, which together deliver 20% fuel savings. With over 6,800 orders by more than 90 customers since its launch in 2016, the A321neo has captured more than 80 percent share of the market.

FLEET - Taiwan's EVA Air confirms six A350-1000s, adds three A321neo Support

EVA Air (BR, Taipei Taoyuan) has converted options for six A350-1000s held as a part of its 2024 order for 18 units of the type, and added three new A321-200neo to its order directly from Airbus.

The Taiwanese carrier said in a stock market filing that the agreed purchase price was up to USD436 million for each A350 and up to USD150 million for each A321neo. The total value of the deal is up to USD3.1 billion.

EVA Air currently expects the deliveries of the A350s to commence in the first quarter of 2027, with a slight delay compared to the original plan. The newly confirmed options are for deliveries in 2031 and later. Its current widebody fleet comprises nine A330-300s, thirty-three B777-300ERs, five B787-9s, and twelve B787-10s. Besides the A350s, it also has unfilled orders for eight more B787-9s and five -10s.

In turn, the A321neo are not due to enter into service before 2029. The three new orders increase the total commitment for the type to 18 aircraft and will extend the deliveries through 2032. They will replace the current narrowbody fleet comprising seventeen A321-200s.

The new orders follow the second year in a row of stellar profits. For 2024, the Taiwanese airline posted a net profit of NTD30.4 billion Taiwanese new dollars (USD922 million) on a consolidated basis, up 38% over the already record-high 2023 result.

FLEET / AIRBUS - EVA Air places landmark order with Airbus

Toulouse, 9 January 2024 – Taiwan’s EVA Air has finalised a firm order with Airbus for the purchase of 18 long-range A350-1000s and 15 single-aisle A321neo. This sees the airline become the latest global carrier to select the A350-1000 for its future long haul requirements. In addition, the A321neo aircraft will bring new levels of efficiency for the carrier’s regional network.

Clay Sun, President of EVA Air said: “We have selected the Airbus aircraft following a thorough evaluation of the various models in each market segment. In both size categories we have selected the most modern and fuel efficient types, that offer the highest levels of passenger comfort. The aircraft also bring significant reductions in carbon emissions, which is in line with our company’s sustainability goals. For long-range operations the A350-1000 sets new standards in its class and will allow us to offer our passengers the best possible in-flight experience.”

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft, said: “This order marks a new phase in our relationship with EVA Air and we thank the airline for its confidence in Airbus. In the long range market, it’s another major endorsement for the A350-1000 as the natural replacement for previous generation aircraft in the larger widebody size category. The A350 is setting new standards across the board in terms of range, payload, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, while making an immediate contribution to reduced carbon emissions.”

“We also thank EVA for reaffirming its commitment to the latest generation Airbus single aisle family with its first direct purchase of the A321neo and we look forward to working closely with the airline as it prepares for its new Airbus fleet.”

As the industry’s long-range leader, the A350 is available in two sizes, with the A350-900 typically seating up to 350 passengers in a standard three-class configuration and the larger A350-1000 seating up to 410 passengers.

Powered by versions of the latest generation Rolls-Royce engines, the aircraft can fly up to 9,700 nautical miles / 18,000 kilometres non-stop, using 25% less fuel than previous generation types and with a similar reduction in carbon emissions. For passengers, the A350 offers the highest levels of in-flight comfort with the quietest cabin, new lighting systems and the latest in-flight connectivity. The reduced cabin pressure also ensures that passengers arrive in better shape.

The A350 Family has won more than 1,000 firm orders from 60 customers worldwide, with more than 570 aircraft currently in the fleets of 39 operators, flying primarily on long-haul routes.

The A321neo is part of the A320neo Family, incorporating the latest technologies including new generation engines, Sharklets and cabin efficiency enablers, which together deliver 20% fuel savings. With over 5,600 orders by more than 100 customers since its launch in 2016, the A321neo has captured some 65 percent share of the market.

Boeing, Air Lease Corp., EVA Air Celebrate Airline's First 787-9 Dreamliner

EVA Air is first in Taiwan to fly the 787; will power fleet with 24 Dreamliners
Airline debuts new, upgraded interior with BMW-designed business class seats
Airplane on lease from ALC's order book with Boeing, which includes 52

CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA], Air Lease Corp. [NYSE:AL; "ALC"], and EVA Air today celebrated the delivery of the airline's first 787-9 Dreamliner, via lease from ALC, at Boeing's South Carolina Delivery Center. EVA Air plans to debut the long-range and super-efficient airplane in November on international routes.

"This milestone delivery marks the beginning of a new era for EVA Air as we continue to revolutionize Taiwan's dynamic commercial aviation industry," said Steve Lin, Chairman of EVA Air. "The 787 Dreamliner's extraordinary efficiency and passenger pleasing cabin features will further elevate EVA Air's position as a five-star global airline. We are excited to introduce the 787 into our fleet and they will play an integral role in our success going forward."

Built with lightweight composite materials and powered by advanced GEnx engines from General Electric (GE) Aviation, the 787 Dreamliner family lowers operating costs by more than 20 percent compared to previous airplanes, and nearly 10 percent compared to today's competing jets.

Today's delivery marks the first of 24 Dreamliners for the Taipei-based airline. In 2015, EVA Air announced a landmark order for 18 787-10 airplanes along with plans to operate four 787-9s and two 787-10s on lease from ALC. This remains the largest commercial airplane purchase in Taiwan's history.

"ALC is pleased to deliver this historic first Boeing 787-9 to EVA Air and further our strong relationship with a world-class airline," said Steven Udvar-Házy, Executive Chairman of Air Lease Corporation. "As the first airline in Taiwan to operate a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, EVA Air will continue to excel as a leading international airline with the most technologically advanced and fuel-efficient fleet."

"We are extremely honored that EVA will be introducing the new 787 Dreamliner to their world-class fleet," said Kevin McAllister, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "This milestone delivery signals yet another chapter in our enduring partnership with EVA. I am confident that the market-leading capabilities of the 787 will contribute immensely to the airline's long-term success."

A member of Star Alliance, EVA Air serves international routes with approximately 565 weekly flights. Onboard the airline's new 787 Dreamliner, passengers can experience EVA Air's new Royal Laurel business class seats designed by Designworks, a BMW Group company. At 23 inches wide, the new seats feature privacy panels, full lie-flat capabilities as well as enhanced in-flight entertainment systems. EVA Air also partnered with Teague, to redesign its economy class seats, which are produced by Recaro.

To improve the operational efficiency of its 787s, EVA Air plans to use a variety of Boeing Global Services tools, including Maintenance Performance Toolbox, Airplane Health Management and the electronic flight bag product.

The airline will also use Component Services, where Boeing and its partners own, manage and maintain a global pool of high-value rotable parts, components and line-replaceable units (LRU) for convenient access.

More about the 787 Dreamliner

The 787-9 is the second member of the Dreamliner family, which offers 20 to 25 percent better fuel efficiency per seat and lower emissions than the airplanes they replace. As the longest-range member of the family, the 787-9 can fly 290 passengers, in a typical two-class configuration, up to 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 km).

As a stretch of the 787-9, the 787-10 retains over 95 percent commonality while adding seats and cargo capacity, setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and operating economics at 25 percent better fuel per seat and emissions than the airplanes it will replace.

EVA Air introduces its first Boeing 777F freighter

EVA Air took delivery of its first Boeing 777 freighter, registration B-16781, at the Boeing Everett Delivery Center in Seattle on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. The carrier flew its newest freighter from Paine Field to Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), departing shortly after delivery and arriving on Thursday, November 9, 2017 (Taipei Time). The airport welcomed Taiwan’s first Boeing 777 freighter with a water cannon ceremony provided with two fire trucks.

EVA plans to put its new Boeing 777 freighter in service on routes between Asia and North America in late November. The airline’s freighter destinations in Asia include Shanghai Pudong, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Osaka, Singapore, Bangkok, Penang and Hanoi. Its air cargo gateways in North America are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and Atlanta. EVA now provides airfreight services on 62 routes, including five dedicated cargo gateways, with 35 weekly freighter flights. Shippers and freight forwarders can reserve space at http://www.brcargo.com and track shipments from their smart phones with the EVA Cargo App.

The highly efficient Boeing 777 freighter is the world’s largest twin-engine air cargo carrier. The Boeing Company designed it to replace both the 747-400 and MD11 freighters. Based on the Boeing 777-200LR, the 777 freighter has the range to fly 5,000 nautical miles fully loaded with a maximum capacity of 102 tons. EVA can use it to fly airfreight from Taiwan to any destination in North America with one technical stop in Anchorage, Alaska.

Energy-efficient and environment-friendly, Boeing 777 freighter is expected to effectively reduce carbon emissions compared to the 747-400 freighter. EVA is equipping its Boeing 777 freighters with GE90-115B Turbofan Engines, the same as those used to power its 34 Boeing 777-300ER passenger planes. By using the same engine, EVA will not only reduce maintenance costs but also promote maintenance management efficiencies for its turbofan engines.

Both the 777 and 747-400 freighters accommodate the same-sized pallets and containers, providing the advantages of resource sharing and smoothing the cargo-loading process during EVA’s transition to the newer aircraft. The addition of 777F to the fleet also gives flight crews the flexibility to fly both passenger and cargo models after they have completed EVA’s demanding pilot-training program.

EVA ordered five 777 freighters from the Boeing Company in July 2015 and will take delivery of the additional four by September 2019. As it adds the new freighters, it will successively retire its five remaining 747-400 freighters by the end of 2019. EVA is now operating a fleet of 79 aircraft, including the new freighter.

EVA to retire Boeing 747s in August

Old long-haul jets being replaced by more fuel-efficient models

EVA Air’s last Boeing 747 aircraft will be retired in August.

The 372-seat, three-class aircraft is the largest passenger jet in EVA’s fleet, but these aging jets are gradually being replaced by newer, more fuel-efficient models.

EVA’s last remaining 747 will take off for the final time on 21 August 2017, on the route between Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport and Hong Kong, marking a major milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal process. These four-engined aircraft have been gradually removed from service in recent months and years, and replaced by EVA’s expanding fleet of twin-engined 777-300ERs and Airbus A330-300s.

The airline also has outstanding orders for 24 787 Dreamliner aircraft, including 20 787-10s – the largest version of the new fuel-efficient jet.
Several other Asian airlines have retired their 747s in recent years, including Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Japan Airlines. Boeing has produced a new, more fuel-efficient version of the 747, but it has not proven popular with passenger airlines.
